1 Dear Parents and Patrons, The purpose of this letter is to inform you that according to the state student assessment results NeSA reading, Gibbon Elementary School is considered a Title 1 School In Needs Improvement for the school year under the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. The state reading goal for last year was to have 100% of all students in grades 3-6 to be proficient or met on the reading state standards. Gibbon Elementary did not meet this goal. Additional information about how our school compared to other schools in the state and it is available on the State of the Schools Report for public viewing on the NDE website at If a school does not meet the state goal two years in a row, in the same subject area, they are identified as In Need of Improvement. A school can get out of School Improvement Status after all subgroups meet the AYP goals for two consecutive years. The Gibbon Elementary is in Year 2 of the Title 1 School Improvement Status. The school district receives funds from the Title I program. These funds help students who are not achieving at grade level in reading or math. We have established an Accountability Compact Team to assist in planning and evaluating strategies for improvement in the elementary. The members of the team consist of an administrator, parent ESU staff member, a board member, and teachers from the elementary staff. We are concerned about the academic progress of all of our students. The district has identified reading as the area of concern and has conducted scientifically based research on new reading programs. We have implemented Reading Mastery, Corrective Reading, and Early Intervention Reading (EIR) programs in the elementary. The EIR program is for grades K-2 and is only an intervention program for students who struggle in Treasurers reading program. The NCLB Act requires each school identified in Title 1 School Improvement to offer Public School Choice to all students who attend the identified school. However, because Gibbon Elementary School is the only elementary school in our district there is no transfer option available to our students. This identification also requires Gibbon Elementary School to provide Supplemental Educational Services (SES) to students who are eligible for free or reduced lunch. If the student is eligible for free or reduced lunch they qualify for SES services this school year. These services will be in addition to the instruction that your child receives during the school year. If you qualify, you can choose a SES program from the Nebraska s list of approved SES providers. The goal is to help your child increase their academic achievement in reading. A list of the Nebraska approved providers is available at the elementary school or on-line at the Nebraska Department of Education web site at under the letter s then go to school improvement grant and under Nebraska s Approved Supplemental Educational Service (SES) Providers for If you qualify and want this service there is a form in the elementary office for you to fill out and it needs to be returned to Gibbon Elementary by December 12, All students benefit greatly from parents being involved in many ways. Asking questions, having students read aloud, and setting aside a time and place for homework are only a few of the things that parents can do. Student achievement is a partnership between school and home and a strong partnership has been proven to be effective in helping student achievement.
