2 ST. NORBERT CATHOLIC CHURCH 2 Stewardship The Most Holy Trinity 2 Corinthians 13:11 13 Harmonious Community God is one, and God is love. To share in God s life is to share in God s love. St. Paul knew this when he wrote to the Corinthians, The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. We often hear this verse of Scripture quoted at the beginning of Mass when the priest greets the people. He says words that date back to the first century. Our communities today have the same spiritual needs as the Corinthians did of old. Paul s greeting names all three members of the Trinity and assigns each of them a quality. Jesus comes to us with grace, the goodness that stirs up thanksgiving in the heart. God comes to us in love, the virtue that sparked creation and that led to our redemption. The Spirit brings fellowship, a sharing of God s joy in our communion with one another. Paul urged the Corinthians to rejoice and to live in peace. A harmonious community experiences the presence of God, because the Trinity dwells in perfect harmony. Church communities are not perfect. We do not always love as we should. We cause division. We neglect the needs of others. But God gives us an example and all the encouragement we need. We aim for divine harmony and we wish it for ourselves every time we begin Mass with Paul s greeting. May grace, love, and fellowship be ours. Paul Turner Copyright 2010, Resource Publications, Inc. All rights reserved. Reprinted with permission. Welcome to our 2014 St. Norbert PSA Information Corner! Each weekend this box contains current pledge information. Any funds in excess of the PSA Parish Assessment will be directed to pay down the loan on the Family & Youth Center. Diocesan Parish Assessment: $150,000 Number of pledges received: 508 Amount Pledged: $260,336 Amount Paid: $145,693 Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion All parishioners who serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (church and homebound) are requested to attend our yearly formation workshop in the church on Monday, June 23, at 7 p.m. OR on Tuesday, June 24, at 10 a.m. All who are interested in joining this ministry are most welcome to attend, especially those who would like to bring the Eucharist to our brothers and sisters who cannot come to Mass. Extraordinary Ministers must be fully initiated Catholics (have received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation), at least 25 years of age, and married in the Church (if married). Please call Janine Kilgore at (714) x110 for more information. Sponsors Needed We are blessed to have several men and women in the beginning stage of RCIA who will be celebrating their Rite of Welcome soon. Many of them need sponsors to walk this spiritual journey with them. A sponsor must be a confirmed and practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church, who is willing to attend our Catechumenate sessions on Thursday evenings with their adult Catechumen from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and to stand with them at the rites which are celebrated during the 10:30 Mass, most of which are during Lent. A sponsor is a faith friend who is accepting of people where they are in life and faith and are willing to share their love of Jesus with another. Sponsors do not need to be Catechists and do not have a direct teaching role in the process, but participate in discussions and in providing encouragement to the Catechumens and praying for them. Most sponsors report that they found this process to be a time of spiritual growth for themselves as well as \for the people coming into the Church. If you would like to do this, or even talk more about it, please call Charlene at (714) x114.we need you soon. Recycle Your Grocery Bags at Christian Service Ministry Keep those bags coming! 5 5 JUNE 15, 2014 THE MOST HOLY TRINITY Faith Formation & Enrichment R.C.I.A. Our Neophytes have now completed their RCIA formation and are becoming active members of St. Norbert Parish. A new Inquiry group is forming for those wishing to begin the process of becoming a Catholic, and for those who are not yet ready to make a commitment, but would like to investigate the teachings of the Church further. Inquiry sessions take place on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9 in the Ministry Center Library. The Inquiry groups are casual meetings to answer initial questions that people may have, to reflect upon God s presence throughout their lives, and to begin to become familiar with the Sunday scripture readings. If you would like more information, please call Charlene at (714) x114. Anyone who hopes to be received into the Church by Easter next year, 2015, should begin the RCIA process no later than the end of June. A Study of World Religions Have you ever wondered how different religions understand God and celebrate human spirituality? During the summer months we will offer a course on Comparative Religion which, in an atmosphere of respect, will explore the religious response to humanity s relationship with God in Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Polytheism and lesser known ancient and modern religions. We will be looking at the religious texts held sacred by different religions, the founders, prophets, and religious leaders in history, the rituals and symbols, and methods of prayer and meditation. The course will be presented through recorded DVD talks by Professor Charles Kimball, Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Oklahoma. Each presentation will include group discussion time, and a small handbook offering the principle elements of the major world religions will be available to participants. We will meet on Wednesday evenings, beginning on June 25, at 7:30 in the Ministry Center Library. The course will continue through the end of September with a two week break at the halfway point at the beginning of August. This should be of interest to anyone who is curious about other cultures, and how people of other religious traditions understand God. Prayer & Meditation with Scripture Our prayer group will gather in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel this Tuesday, June 17. This hour of prayer time utilizes varying prayer forms each week, including Lectio Divina, centering prayer, prayer of remembrance, Taizé prayer and Ignatian meditation. It is a time to meet with others in quiet and peace away from the busyness and noise of the world. We gather for prayer in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 7:30 p.m. Please feel free to join us you are most welcome! Wondering Why Our formal doctrine of the Trinity developed later than the scriptural texts of the New Testament, but we find that the creedal statements made by the Councils of Nicaea in 325 and Constantinople in 381, which composed and accepted that creed certainly have their roots soundly in the Biblical accounts of Jesus teaching. Jesus spoke of God as Father, his father and our father. When he prayed, he addressed God as Abba, a tender familial term for father, similar to daddy or papa. Jesus image of Father was not a stern disciplinarian awaiting the opportunity to punish wrongdoing, but rather a tender, loving parent who reaches out to forgive and reconcile with his sons and daughters. Perhaps the best portrait of God the Father, is Jesus parable about the Prodigal Son. In that story, the Father, who represents God, gives his son an inheritance which the son wastes and loses. He comes home hoping to be accepted only as a servant, so he can at least get something to eat. But, the father has been waiting and watching for his return. As soon as he sees him still a long way off we are told, he runs down the road to greet his son with embraces and kisses. He dresses him in fine clothes and throws a party with music and rich food. There is not one word of reprimand, only joy that the son has returned home whatever his reason may have been for doing so. This is how Jesus understands the Father, the one who waits and watches and welcomes home, wherever his children may have gone, whatever they may have done, the Father never stops loving them, and wants only that they return. Jesus, eternally the Son of God and second person of the Trinity, is the image of the Father who chooses to become human for us so that we may know God more fully. In John s Gospel, Jesus says, the Father has turned all judgment over to him. If we wish to know what Jesus judgment is like, we need only to look at the many examples in the Gospels, the woman caught in adultery, Zacchaeus the tax collector, the thief on the cross, Peter, his own disciple who denied him. To all of these Jesus offers his love and a chance for a new beginning. The love of Jesus is so complete, that he took the sin of all people upon himself and paid the price for that sin with his life, so that, as our gospel today says, we may have eternal life. The one who will judge us, is the one who loves us enough to die that we might be saved from death. And Jesus promises to send us the Holy Spirit, whom he calls the Advocate. An advocate is someone who defends at trial. Our defense attorney, so to speak, at our judgment is the Holy Spirit who speaks in our behalf. The Holy Spirit is the Person of God dwelling within each of us, who knows us better than we know ourselves, who understands motivations, our reasons for everything we say and do. God, in the Holy Spirit, is our defender. God, in Jesus is our final Judge. God, in the Father loves with a love that knows no end or limitations. The First Letter of John says that God is love. We are embraced by our God, who is the completeness of loving relationship in Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We are embraced in that love from our conception through all eternity. God will not ever stop loving us, never, no matter what, because God loved the world so much that he sent his only son so that whoever would believe could live in him forever.
