2 1 Introduce the Book Introduce the Nonfiction Genre: Informational Text Display the book cover. Read the title and the authors names. Explain that this book compares life long ago to life today. Tell children that in this book, photographs help the reader compare the way things were in the past to the way they are in the present. Activate or Build Background Explain to children that when people talk about the past, they are referring to things that happened a long time ago. For instance, explain that for as long as you have been a teacher, you have helped children learn how to read. However, when you first started teaching (in the past), you did not often use computers to help children learn how to read. Today (in the present), you often use computers. Continue comparing past and present by creating a two-column chart like the one at right on the chalkboard. Label the columns Lo que hacemos and Lo que [tu nombre] hizo. Complete the chart by asking children to volunteer different things they do at home, at school, and during playtime, and sharing the way you did those things when you were a child. Preview and Predict Page through the book with children, reading aloud the headings and looking at the photographs on each spread. Point out the black and white photographs. Track the print as you read aloud the heading. Tell children that this is a heading, and it tells what the two pages will be about. Point out this heading has three words: En, el, and hogar. The heading tells you that the things on these pages have something to do with being at home. Picture chart: Display page 8, and read the headings at the top of the chart. Explain that the information on this page is shown in a picture chart. Tell children that the photographs are set up in rows and columns so it is easy to compare them. Help children understand what a row is by moving your hand from left to right across each row. Move your hand from top to bottom to show each column. As you turn to each section, name each concept in English and describe it. Home: You live at home; you eat, sleep, and play at home. School: You go to school to learn. Playtime: You play with friends and toys during playtime. Have children take turns using pantomime to act out something they do in each setting. Reread the Book After rereading the text aloud, help children summarize what they have learned by completing the graphic organizer on the back cover. 5 3 Learn Through the Text SOCIAL STUDIES: Past and Present Use Así eran las cosas to reinforce the concepts of past and present. Write the words pasado and presente on the chalkboard. Read the words aloud. Qué palabra puede significar hace muchos años? Qué palabra puede significar ahora? Have children page through the book. For each setting, have children name items in the photographs from the past and the present. Write the items under the corresponding headings on the chalkboard. Extend children s learning by having them think of other things that are different today from years ago at home, at school, and at play. Add these things to the lists on the chalkboard. COMPREHENSION: Compare and Contrast Tell children that they can learn more about things when they think about how the things are the same and how they are different. Have two children stand up in the classroom and display the shoes they are wearing. Then ask the class: En qué se parecen los zapatos de los niños? En qué se diferencian? Discuss how the shoes are alike and different, noting the characteristics (for example, size, color, type) and purpose. Divide the class into small groups. Distribute to each group two classroom items, such as a picture book and a notebook, a pencil and a pen, or tape and glue. Have each group discuss how the items are similar and how they are different. WRITING Write an Informational Text Have children use what they have learned about informational text to write about what life was like in the past and what it is like in the present. Have children interview a parent or grandparent to find out what life was like when they were younger. Model questions that children can ask, such as Cómo fue tu primer año en la escuela? Qué juegos o con qué juguetes jugabas tú cuando tenías mi edad? Qué les gustaba hacer juntos a ti y a tu familia? Have children write or draw examples of the items that they discussed with their family members. Then have children write or draw something about their own lives that compares to their family member s experience. Invite children to share their work from an Author s Chair. Encourage the class to discuss similarities and differences between the pictures each child shares. Then allow children to take their writing home to present to the person they interviewed.
