As established at our annual meeting this past November, it is the intention of both the Board and myself to not only repeat the success that we have had this past year, but to improve upon it. Needless to say, the strides we have taken over these past twelve months have not come without the hard work and dedication of our families, volunteers, board members, and staff; without them even the smallest of events would be impossible. Our organization continues to be blessed with an active and supportive community that not only permits us to carry on with our education and outreach goals, but also to provide the internal support and solidarity to those whose lives are touched by Down Syndrome. As we move forward into the next year, we are excited to not only improve upon the annual events we hold each year such as Step Up for Down Syndrome, the Sweetheart Luncheon, and Tee Up for Down Syndrome, but also to expand and improve the services offered for new and returning member families. We look forward to the coming year and the exciting opportunities that it brings. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, we wish you a happy New Year! 3 A Big Heartfelt Thanks Celebrating those who make a difference in our community Founders Award winner Carolyn Telallian & Jim McMillan DSACC Founders Award By Denise Allshouse The Down Syndrome Association of Central California Founder s Award has been given only three times since It is presented to a person whose service in our community has significantly enhanced the quality of life for people whose lives are touched by Down Syndrome. Our fourth recipient of the Founders Award, given at the DSACC 15th Anniversary Gala, is Carolyn Tellalian. Carolyn is the mother of three beautiful children. Ryan, 31, Vana 24 and Marissa, 26. Her daughter Marissa has had a great influence on her mother and can take some of the credit for her mother s passion and dedication to children and adults who are facing extreme life challenges. Children with special needs hold a special place in Carolyn s heart. As a result, she was a founding member of Visalia based, Parenting Network in She was instrumental in getting Visalia s first inclusive preschool Carolyn & Marisa Tellalian Left to Right: DSACC Board of Directors Karen Dockery, Rachel Hitz, Jeremy Bishel, Tony Phillips, Chandel Perkins, Founders Award winner Carolyn Tellalian, Steven Ueltzen for children with disabilities off the ground. Carolyn has served on the boards of Community Advisory Council and Exceptional Parents Unlimited. Carolyn was a key player in the development of the Wayfinder s program located at Fresno State. Wayfinders is an on-campus college program for young adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Over the years, as a medical social worker at Children s Hospital, Carolyn has facilitated the care for children s who are victims of abuse and neglect. As an advocate, she has helped to educate law enforcement officers and Child Protective Services workers about child abuse. Carolyn has served the Down Syndrome Association of Central California faithfully over the years. She is always willing to answer the call when a new family has a baby admitted to Children s Hospital. She takes her own time 3 to visit with the family and makes sure they are connected with resources and people who will support them. Occasionally, on her own time, Carolyn has been known to accompany parents to their IEP meetings and act as an advocate for their children when other resources in the community are not available. She has received Wright s Law training and IEP training so that she can better serve these parents and children in their time of need. Carolyn leads our monthly Parent2Parent support group at DSACC. This is a program that is in its infancy and was long overdue. Meetings are drawing upwards of ten to twelve participants each month. Carolyn describes the support group meeting environment as one where parents or primary caregivers of a child with Down syndrome (or any other special need for that matter) can safely and openly discuss situations and emotions that accompany parenting a child with a disability. Carolyn, on behalf of the board of directors and members of Down Syndrome Association of Central California, thank you for your good works in our community. Do you know someone who should be featured in our monthly Community Difference Maker Spotlight? Submit your nominations to: by the first of every month. Be sure to include that persons contact information, reasons why you think they should be featured and your contact information.
