2 PRAYER, FASTING, AND ALMSGIVING Wednesday the students here at St. James School participated in the ritual of burning the palms, the resulting ashes to be used on Ash Wednesday. Students were reminded that Lent is a season of Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving. From the student body came the question "Why do we fast?" I think many of us are wondering the same thing. We seem to understand the reason for prayer and almsgiving -- but fasting "not so much." The assumption is we are good, bringing forth good fruit. Fasting, broadly speaking, is the voluntary avoidance of something that is good in moderation. Fasting is believed to help in ones journey to God who is all good. When we talk about fasting, we normally mean restricting our food that we eat. We can fast between meals by not eating snacks, or we can engage in a complete fast by abstaining from all food - "breakfast" literally means "breaks the fast." By fasting we are controlling the passions of the body which focuses our prayer for greater clarity. The practice of self discipline is important, it is something we crave. Perhaps this is what draws some to run marathons, hike mountains or practice yoga or sports. The savings gained by consuming less food can be given to the poor. Fasting is mentioned along with prayer and almsgiving (or charity) because the three spiritual disciplines go hand in hand and, the Church calls us to practice all three together especially during the season. In the sixth chapter of Matthew, Jesus gives instruction about prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Notice how He assumes that fasting will be part of our spiritual journey. He does not say "if" you fast rather he says "when" you fast. Jesus said to His disciples: "When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you." Fasting keeps us awake to this powerfully spiritual season. Ashes mark our personal and communal entrance into a season of spiritual retreat. Our Lenten practices serve to awaken us to our divine journey between "dust to dust" that we call life. It is an invitation to contemplate the span of our lives: our call to be more than corporal, more than a combination of molecules. This call to contemplate mystery fills churches with worshipers even though it is not a Holy Day of Obligation. It seems to excite spiritual desire. It is difficult to explain the appeal of receiving the mark of the cross on our foreheads traced in ash, while being reminded that "I am dust and that I shall return to dust." Though words fail to explain - something within us understands. The soul has reasons that reason knows not. The season of Lent creates a time and space for an awareness of God's love for us. We contemplate Jesus' victory over temptation during his forty day trial. We are reassured that with God we shall fear nothing. How awesome is that! ~ Father Jim The Vincentian Corner In the Gospel today Jesus moved with pity touched the leper and healed him. Let us pray today for the grace to be generous with our gifts to help those who are suffering. Though service to the poor is one of our primary Vincentian activities, our founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, set out to form a ministry based on fellowship and spiritual growth as well as service. St. James Vincentians are dedicated to building friendships within the community and to enhance their spiritual lives through prayer and Christian sharing. If this sounds like your cup of tea, consider attending our meeting this Thursday, February 19, at 7:00pm in the St. Patrick room of the Memorial Center. Sálvame y estaré a salvo!
