1 Subjunctive with will or wish In English After verbs of wishing or requesting, the verb in the subordinate clause may be: 1. in the indicative mood: I hope my guidance counselor gets me out of physics class. 2. in the infinitive form, in the formula (for) + direct object + infinitive: The teacher wants us to turn in our homework now. They need for us to be on time.. in the infinitive form when the subjects of the subordinate and main clauses are the same: Paula and Ezequiel want to travel to Puerto Rico this winter. 4. preceded by a modal auxiliary such as will or would: I wish they would help me more. 5. in the subjunctive mood, usually preceded by that: Our teacher asks that we be quiet during the presentation. The counselor insists that he take French. Verbs that often take the subjunctive are request, prefer, insist, ask, and require. A Underline the subordinate clause and circle its verb. Then classify the verb in the subordinate clause according to the chart above. 1. I really do want to bring up my math grade. 2. My teacher insists that I do extra homework.. My mom hopes I do better this year. 4. My friend suggests that I see a tutor. 5. My brother suggests that I be more attentive in class. 6. I prefer that he stay out of it. 7. I need for everyone to be patient. In Spanish The subjunctive mood is always used when a wish or request is made and the subject in the subordinate clause differs from the subject in the main clause. Stephanie le pide a la universidad que pague su cuarto. Espero que vayas al cine. Ojalá que el consejero me saque de la clase de física. If the subjects in the subordinate and main clauses are the same, the verb in the subordinate clause is usually in the infinitive form. Miguel necesita estudiar en la biblioteca. Paula y Ezequiel quieren viajar a Puerto Rico este invierno. Holt Spanish Copyright by Holt, Rinehart and Winston. All rights reserved. 129

Miguel y Rodrigo esperan que Luisa no llegue tarde al cine. 6. Luisa sabe que ellos quieren ver la película de las siete. 7. Ellos quieren que veamos la película juntos. C Complete the following sentences with the correct form of the verb. 1. Espero que mi hermano no (tener) una impresión equivocada. 2. Él no quiere (pelearse) con nadie.. Nuestros padres insisten en que nosotros (respetar) a los demás. 4. Mi hermano desea (tener) muchos amigos. 5. 3 Future tense In English The future tense is used to talk about actions or events in the future. It is formed by placing will or shall before the base form of the verb. Connor will write a formal apology. The future can also be expressed by the present progressive (form of to be + going + infinitive). I am going to ask for forgiveness when I get to school. A Read the sentences below and write future or present progressive to indicate the tense of the underlined verb or verb phrase. 1. Davis says he will break up with his girlfriend. 2. I think they are going to stop arguing.. Alice says she is going to forgive and forget. 4. Davis will be glad to hear that. 5. I hope they will learn to communicate. 6. Are you going to apologize? 7. Will you say you re sorry? 8. It is going to be difficult to make up. future In Spanish The future tense is also used to talk about actions or events in the future. It is formed by adding future verb endings to the infinitive of the verb. Virginia bailará con su novio en la fiesta. It can also be used to talk about the likelihood of an event or circumstance in the present: Tendrá mucho trabajo. She probably has a lot of work. Estarán resentidos. They must be resentful. Future tense verb endings: -é -emos -ás -éis -á -án Some verbs have irregular future stems, but their endings remain the same. decir: dir- haber: habr- hacer: har- poder: podrponer: pondr- querer: querr- saber: sabr- salir: saldrtener: tendr- valer: valdr- venir: vendr- Spanish also uses ir a + infinitive to express future actions. Voy a pedir disculpas cuando llegue al colegio. Holt Spanish Copyright by Holt, Rinehart and Winston. All rights reserved. 11
4 FUTURE TENSE B Read the sentences below and write future or ir a + inf. on the line to indicate the form of the underlined verb or verb phrase. Then go back and decide whether the verbs in the future tense indicate the probability of an event/circumstance in the present. If so, check the column to the right. Probability ir a + inf. 1. Mi mejor amiga va a llorar. 2. Supongo que estará resentida con su novio.. Seguramente se reconciliarán. 4. Él la habrá dejado plantada otra vez. 5. Pronto él le pedirá perdón. 6.
