14 El perro perdido Timed Writing Quiz Rewrite the story El perro perdido. You can tell the story exactly as we read it in class or you can add your own imaginative details. Your goal is words in five minutes. Students answers on the Timed Writing Quiz will vary. This is how I administer Timed Writing Quizzes in my class: Students have five minutes to retell the story in Spanish. On Timed Writing Quizzes, students may look back at the story and their notes, but I remind them that looking through their notes takes time. Students may retell the story exactly as we read it in class or they may add their own details. The main points of the story, however, must remain the same. Words in English or Spanglish do not count. For beginning students, I do not count off for minor spelling errors on Timed Writing Quizzes. I also do not count off for grammar errors (unless the sentence is unintelligible). For more advanced students, I count off for both spelling and grammar. I always count spelling and grammar for heritage speakers. I grade Timed Writing Quizzes on the number of words students write in five minutes. I give students a goal of how many words to write and tell them that this goal is an A. For example, the first time I give a Timed Writing Quiz, I tell students that their goal is 50 words in 5 minutes. If they write 50 words, they get 100%. Anything above 50 words is also 100%, although I may award one or two points of extra credit to motivate my higher achievers to keep writing after they reach 50 words. If students write less than 50 words, I give them a grade based on the percentage they got out of 50 (40 words is 80%, 35 words is 70%, etc.) Throughout the year, I raise the number of goal words. By the end of Spanish 1, my average students are writing over 150 in five minutes, and my high achievers are writing over 250 words in five minutes. Students count their own words and write the number at the bottom of the page. Every time we have a Timed Writing Quiz, I randomly select a few quizzes and double- check the word count.
