FORECASTING SYSTEM OF DEMAND FOR ELECTRICITY. APPROACH BASED ON INTERVAL ANALYSIS Author: Proyect Director: Coordinator: Luis Eduardo Llorente Zaballos Carlos Maté Jiménez Susana Ortiz Marcos ABSTRACT This final Project is about a study of times series of the electricity demand of Spain from the years 2000 to The origins and reasons for this Project come from an article by (García Ascanio & Maté, 2010) and what has been studied is a way to better the results found within the article through other pre-existing or newly found methods of prediction. In order to do so, the first thing was necessary to do was to study in depth interval time series. These kinds of series, according to (Maté, 2012), are very precise when it comes to providing results which is why interval time series (IST) were used. Another important point has been to see which other methods were going to be used to achieve the prediction. In order to do so it was necessary to study characteristics of the series of demand to evaluate which methods could be better adapted a priori. One of the methods that was thought of since the beginning is the one that Taylor recently discovered and was applied to the time series of electric demand of other countries given its positive results (W. Taylor, 2003). Once the diverse methods were applied, various margins of error were calculated for classical time series to see which could be deemed good or bad and which needed to be discarded for lack of precision. Once the methods with the best results for classical series were chosen, diverse combinations were made to form intervals of prediction and to try to obtain new predictions as precise as possible. The application of said methods in some cases was achieved with pre-existing software which included the method in question, and in other cases newer methods it was necessary to develop models on calculation sheets. Following the use of different distances of intervals, the use of MDE and the measure of covering and efficiency, it has been established that methods or combination of methods are better for forecasting each of the four study periods. Lastly, once the predictions were obtained, they were compared to those found in (García Ascanio & Maté, 2010) through use of RMSSE in order to confirm which methods offer a more precise result. The conclusions that have been obtained are that the methods here used do not significantly better the results in comparison to the article, but if the level of difficulty (which is less) is taken into consideration, it could be said that that methods applied are good. vii
KEY WORDS Interval time series, methods combination, Holt-Winters multiple seasonality, SARIMA, k-nn, demand of electricity. INTRODUCTION Presently, electricity is one of the most important energy kinds because of the large quantity of uses it possesses. This energy has a special characteristic, which is that it cannot be stored in large quantities. For this reason, it is necessary that all the energy it produces is consumed and that it be known how much needs to be produced. From this comes the necessity of predicting the demand of electric energy in order to be able to prepare ahead of time the necessary ways of generating it. It is important to know with the maximum precision possible how it will be consumed, both short-term and long-term so that the generators have sufficient capacity to correctly provide the demand. Also, if given the case that it is not possible for long-term, the necessary steps occur on time. For this reason, precision is an important factor not only for the models used but also for the data being worked with when it comes to making predictions. There are two kinds of data that exist: class and interval. There are the ones that gather two values in every instant of time. The two values are a minimum and maximum and according to (Maté, 2012) they are offer greater precision when it comes to providing information about any criteria, which offers the interval that collects the true value of the factor of study. The prediction of demand, in reference to the used methods and according to (Hernández Callejo, 2013) gains precision with the use of non-linear methods because facilitates the learning of series, even when the number of available data is limited. This limitation does not occur with linear methods, which on top of being complicated to use because of the multiple equations, need a high number of data to create the corresponding models. The precision is elevated if when realizing the prediction of the interval series various methods are combined, including combining linear and nonlinear ones. This reason for the project came from all the aforementioned reasons, recent advances in certain methods, and the importance of the topic in question. What this project strives to do is a study on all the previously commented aspect using a series of studies of demand of electricity of Spain from the years 2000 to 2007 using interval data. These specific years were chosen because of (García Ascanio & Maté,2010) which applied a linear and non-linear model in the article with the same series. By doing this, the results can be compared to establish conclusions about the use of linear and non-linear methods in the series of demand. To achieve the study it was necessary to document in depth about temporary interval series, the measurement of distances between intervals and other parameters such as viii
what the rate of covering and efficiency might be which would show how precise the predictions are. It was also necessary to see which methods could be used and the combinations that were going to be done to try and find a combination of methods that was most precise for each period of study. DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK DEVELOPED The work done in this project can be divided in three clearly differentiated blocks: formation, application of methods, and drawing conclusions. In the first part what was done were an extensive documentation about the series of intervals and which methods this kind of data uses, and the distances between the intervals, which later serve to indicate the precision of the applied methods. Also, information about the methods that were going to be used was researched so to become familiar with the methods. In particular, research was complied about the recent discovery by Taylor, found in (Taylor 2003). This method from this article was applied in this final project and was important and relevant for the results achieved. In the second part, diverse methods were used such as that of Holt-Winters with one or two seasonalities and the method from Bob Jenkins (ARIMA) with seasonality. Other kinds of methods were also applied such as the nearest K neighbors, but because of the lack of precision these methods were discarded. The application of said methods was done through the use of diverse software programs such as Statgraphics, Matlab, Gretl, and Eviews. In the case that the method could not be applied through use of those programs, they were applied through Excel or through (Morell, 2012). In this part margins of error were also calculated in correspondence to the series of classic data in order to create an initial idea of what the results might be like. In the third and last part conclusions were drawn, but in order to do so it was necessary to accomplish other things first. The first being to see the margins of error of the realized predictions, analyze them, and see what possible combinations can better forecast the series of demand of Spain. Once the combinations are established the distances between intervals and errors were calculated. The distances used in this project are from Bertoluzza, De Carvalho and the Euclidea. The margins of error were calculated through use of MDE and the rate of Covering and efficiency. Once every mentioned above was calculated, the combination of methods was established to better predict every hour, which was an important conclusion since it indicates how to forecast every period. Finally, the general conclusions were drawn about the methods used such as which worked better, which were worse, and if linear methods have precision in the serie. This ix
last conclusion has been achieved by comparing the results with (García Ascanio & Maté, 2010). CONCLUSIONS First and foremost, the results obtained in this final project have been satisfactory. This is because the results achieved exceeded initial expectations. There are numerous conclusions formulated from this project. The two most important and relevant ones will be later commented. The first is that it is confirmed that the methods applied were unable to better the results achieved by (García Ascanio & Maté, 2010). Despite being unable to do so, it can be said that the techniques for prediction applied were good in the level difficulty because they were easier than those used in the article. While the ones used might not be as complex as those in the article such as the VAR, they can still be used to predict the demand. The second conclusion is represented in this table: The table above shows the best combination of methods that can be used to predict each of the four hours of study of this project. It also shows the rate of covering and efficiency. As represented, said rates are all high percentage, which signifies that the level of precision is high. REFERENCES Hernández Callejo, L. (2013).
