2 by Rebecca Fox Build Background Read the title to children and talk with them about what they see in the cover photo. Ask them if they know how to swim. Then ask: Cuáles son algunos de los animales que pueden nadar? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Explain important text features, such as the repetition of the phrase Los nadan. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that this book tells about animals that can swim; it is narrated by the girl in the cover photograph. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. Qué ven? Sí! Son dos peces amarillos. La niña dice: Son peces. Digan la palabra Son. Encuentren la palabra Son y pongan su dedo debajo de ella. Pueden ver que Son empieza con S mayúscula porque está al principio. La niña también dice: Nadan en el agua. Digan la palabra en. Encuentren la palabra en y pongan su dedo debajo de ella. Pueden ver que en no lleva n mayúscula porque no está al principio. Page 3: Remind children that they can use information in the pictures to help them read. Words to Know en ser 2 Lesson 18:

3 Read Now have children read softly while pointing under each word. Observe children as they read. Respond to the Text Personal Response Ask children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found most interesting. Suggested language: Alguna vez vieron a alguno de estos animales nadar? Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text Fish, ducks, seals, and whales can swim. People can swim, too. Many kinds of animals can swim and people can, too. The sea is an amazing underwater habitat. The writer uses the same sentence pattern on each page. The narrator s final sentence is exclamatory Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, Heinemann, Portsmouth, N.H. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Help children match one spoken to one written word while reading and pointing. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Have children listen for words that rhyme. Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme, and keep their hands in their laps if the words do not rhyme. Say pairs of words, for example: pez and soy, pez and vez, patos and gatos, focas and ecos, focas and bocas, ballenas and cadenas, etc. Tracing Letters Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Have children choose a letter, say its name, and trace the letter. Build Sentences Materials: index cards. Write the repeated words from on index cards: Los, las, nadan, nado, el, en. Then write the content words on index cards: peces, patos, focas, ballenas, yo, mar. Have children build sentences using the word cards. Have them read the sentences and illustrate them if they wish. 3 Lesson 18:

4 Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 18.6 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension Skill Author s Purpose Explain to children that they can use details to tell why an author writes a book. Model how to think about the author s purpose: Think Aloud La autora dice que los peces, los patos, las focas y las ballenas pueden nadar. Luego, la autora muestra a la niña que dice en la página 6: Y yo también! Creo que la autora quiere que los lectores sepan que muchos animales pueden nadar, y las personas también. Practice the Skill Have children choose another book and tell the author s purpose for writing it. Writing Prompt Read aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6. Draw a picture of another animal that can swim. Write one thing you like about that animal. 4 Lesson 18:
