Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Have children listen for words that rhyme. Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme, and keep their hands in their laps if the words do not rhyme. Say pairs of words, for example: pez and soy, pez and vez, patos and gatos, focas and ecos, focas and bocas, ballenas and cadenas, etc. Tracing Letters Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Have children choose a letter, say its name, and trace the letter. Build Sentences Materials: index cards. Write the repeated words from on index cards: Los, las, nadan, nado, el, en. Then write the content words on index cards: peces, patos, focas, ballenas, yo, mar. Have children build sentences using the word cards. 4 Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 18.6 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension Skill Author s Purpose Explain to children that they can use details to tell why an author writes a book.
