1 Welcome to AP Spanish Literature and Culture! Together, we are about to embark on a literary journey through time, on which we will be challenged with a wide variety of works. Before we are able to completely comprehend a work, it is necessary to understand the historical context behind the piece. The following link will take you to a 16 minute clip about the Jewish influence on the Iberian Peninsula right around the time of the first work we will be reading. 1. Please watch the video at the following link, and take brief notes using the questions below as a guide. It is not necessary to write complete sentences. 2 2. El romance The type of poem that you are about to read is called un romance. This has nothing to do with romance or love, but instead is the name of this type of poetry. The answers to the questions are on the last page of the.pdf file so that you may verify your ideas La técnica poética In order to truly analyze a poem, we must think about the literary devices used in order to get the main idea to the reader/listener. The following terms are probably new to you, so you will need to research their meaning and write a definition for each. It will then be necessary to find examples of these techniques in the poem. 3 4. La Alhambra The poem deals with the loss of the final Arab stronghold, La Alhambra. The previous is a castle constructed by the Arabs in their capital, Granada. Its eventual defeat is considered the end of Arab rule on the Iberian Peninsula. The following link will take you to a 45 minute video detailing the important ideas about La Alhambra. It is not necessary to watch the entire 45 minutes. You should watch parts of it so that you may have a mental picture of the fortress mentioned in the poem, and why its loss was so important Romance del rey moro que perdió Alhama We are now ready to read the poem. As you read, you will need to look up words that you do not understand. Again, I recommend to help you out. Be sure to use the references at the bottom of each page because they will help you with ideas that you do not understand. They are organized by superscript numbers throughout the work. Take notes by jotting down your answers to each question in the margin of the page. It is proven that you retain more information if you take notes as you read.
