Read the title and author and talk about the cover photo. Tell students that this book is nonfiction so the words and photos will give information about the topic. Introduce the Text Guide students through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Grass grows from seeds and needs good soil, water, and sunlight to grow. Grass is used for food, for building, for keeping soil in place, and for parks and playing fields. The photos show what is being described in the text. The captions help to explain the photos. Choices for Further Support Fluency Invite students to choose a passage from the text to read aloud. Remind them that they should use punctuation as a guide for making their voice rise (at the end of questions), fall (at the end of statements), and show strong feeling (for exclamations). Comprehension Based on your observations of the students reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind students to go back to the text to support their ideas. Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts, using examples from the text. Remind students that open syllables end with a vowel sound, and closed syllables end with a consonant sound. Read the following words and have students break them into syllables and say which syllables are open and which are closed: co-lum-pios, bam-bú, llu-via, tie-rra, a-gua. 3 Lesson 8:

4 Writing about Reading Vocabulary Practice Have students complete the Vocabulario questions on Hoja reproducible 8.1. Responding Have students complete the vocabulary activities on page 11. Remind them to answer the Acertijo on page 12. (Answer: consejo) Reading Nonfiction Nonfiction Features: Headings Remind students that nonfiction has many features to help readers understand important information. Headings are one of these features. Explain that headings are an important source of information because they tell the reader what each section or page of the book will be about. Point out that in this book some of the headings are questions and other headings are statements. Explain that when the author asks a question in a heading, the reader can expect to find the answer on the page. Have students turn to page 2 and read the heading.
