I am excited to be at East and serve as your Interim Principal. As a new chapter begins for our Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and the Senior class of 2016, I want to introduce you to some amazing, new teachers at East High School - Greg Maughan WELCOME TO NEW FACULTY AND STAFF There are some new folks around the building this year that you will want to meet. We have a new assistant principal, Ken DeVries. Ken is joining our staff after having been at West High for several years. He has a BA degree in Spanish and a BS in economics from the University of Utah. He earned his teaching certification and a M.Ed. at Central Washington University. Before he became an administrator he taught Spanish and ESL and coached golf. His overarching philosophy about working in education is to Always ensure that students and teachers know that you are fair and that you care about them. Ken is excited to be here at East, and hopes all of you will take the opportunity to introduce yourselves to him during the coming year. Rose Evans is our new School Counselor for students with last names that start with N through Sa. Rose went to high school in Virginia, and graduated from the University of Vermont with a BA in Psychology. She earned her Master s Degree from the University of Utah in Education Psychology specializing in School Counseling. She says her favorite thing about being a school counselor is to support students with the ups and downs of school and life as they decide who they are and what they want to do with their life. After all, as Ralph Waldo Emerson said, Life is a journey, not a destination. So Rose adds, Let s enjoy the ride! Rose comes to East with several years experience in the Salt Lake City School District. She set up the Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance Program at the Open Classroom, so she is hitting the deck running and excited to be a Leopard. If you have met our new teacher Shandre Dovale, you know that she is our exotic import from South Africa! Shandre earned her education degree from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, and is currently an MAIS graduate student at WNME, working towards a master s in Writing and English. She is joining our staff after teaching for eleven years. Shandre taught high school English and Afrikaans in South Africa and also coached several sports, including tennis. In Utah she has taught 6 th through 12 th grade Language Arts, AP Literature & Composition, and IB courses. This year she is teaching 9 th and 10 th Language Arts, AVID and coaching the girl s tennis team. She says, The thing that amazes me is how much more similar than different students here and in South Africa are. There is so

2 much we have in common as human beings and by embracing diversity, we can truly learn to appreciate and value that. Education is the key. I feel privileged to play a small role in facilitating learning and hopefully making a difference in the world in my own small way. As Mother Teresa said, Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love. Donna Pence is our new Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, 3D Crafts, Advanced Art, and AP Art teacher! She has been teaching for seven years, saying, I am a glass artist that came to teaching late in my career, but it is now a passion! I have been teaching on the elementary and middle-school level (Beacon Heights and Clayton) for the past five years and am thrilled to be returning to teaching high school art again. East is an amazing school and I am excited for the school year! Donna earned her BFA at the University of Utah, and her M.Ed. at Utah State University, we are excited to welcome her to our excellent Fine Arts staff. We have several first-year teachers at East. Samantha Kolesky is our new AP World History and US History teacher. She holds a Bachelor in Social Studies Composite Teaching with a History Minor, from the University of Utah. Samantha has already spent many hours observing and working with the teachers at East High during her time at the University, specifically with the ESL department. She completed her student teaching at Cottonwood High School last year, working with both a US history class with many levels of students as well as an ESL World History class with many refugee students. She says, My favorite thing about teaching is the opportunity to work with creative young minds. In a classroom full of teenagers there are so many varied opinions and experiences, especially here at East that I cannot wait to learn from. We must not be afraid when student learning extends past our own understanding. We must have enough humility to not be afraid that some of our students know more than we do about many aspects of life. We must allow our students to push that boundary further than we ever imagined. We cannot hold them back. In the next Communiqué you will be introduced to more of our newest staff members. We are anticipating another great year at East, and are delighted to welcome these new members of the East High learning community; we encourage you to get to know them when you visit our campus. PLAN TEST FOR ALLSOPHOMORES PLAN testing will occur October 6, Students in the 10 th grade will be tested. All other students will have a late start and begin their first period at 11:00 a.m. PLAN is an ACT preparation test that is made available to all 10 th graders free of charge. Seniors and graduating juniors will be excused from first period to the auditorium for an introductory assembly, and then students are required to meet with representatives of three in-state colleges of their choice. Saturday, September 26 Rocky Mountain Association for College Admissions Counseling (RMACAC) College Fair: 1:30pm-3:30pm. For students and their parents. Corner Canyons High School. Representatives from college and universities from throughout the country meet with prospective students. Wednesday, October 7 College and Scholarship Information Night: 7:00pm-9:00pm. For students of all grades and their parents. Find out about the Youthlinc Service Year Wednesday, Sept 16 at 7pm in the East High Library. More than 100 East H.S. students have participated in Youthlinc in the past six years, becoming relied upon volunteers in their own communities, and then traveling in the summer for two weeks to Kenya, Peru, Guatemala, Thailand, Cambodia, Nepal and next year Madagascar. Youthlinc students plan their international service during monthly meetings starting in November. Deadline for application is October 7. My name is Mrs. Sarah Herron and I am the Library Technology Teacher at East High. I have been a library teacher for 11 years and am excited to start my second year here with your students. The EHS Library is open to students before and after school and during lunches. I am happy to help you with the Power School grade book program with a phone call or a visit. We have an amazing Internet resource for you and your students Pioneer On-Line Library! Pioneer On-Line Library has databases and encyclopedias that can be used for school research projects as well as personal projects such as car repair and crafts. Pioneer may be accessed without a password at any school, university and public library in Utah from the SLCSD Home Page ( Look for Pioneer under the Additional Student Re-sources. For the home access password, please have your student ask us in the EHS Library. UEN K-12 Student Center also has amazing student resources and fun interactive games. You can click the link for UEN at the bottom of the Additional Student Resources link listed above. E-Books! Summer reading loss can impact a student and his/her success in high school. But our students can read books in our District Library Collection even if school is closed! The Salt Lake City School District has purchased many ebook titles for grades K- 12 to read on a computer at home as well as at school. To access the e-books, you need a computer with Internet access.go to the SLCSD Library Catalogue: ( click on East High Library, and then click on the Catalogue tab. EAST HIGH NEWSPAPER GOES ONLINE The official launch date is September 9, We are going live online at Be sure to visit the website to stay up to date on topics important to the student population written by East s own student body. YEARBOOK INFORMATION Please note that Yearbooks will be available to purchase through September 29th for $50. From September 30th through December 18th, Yearbook prices will increase to $60, so purchase early and save! Also note that after December 18th Yearbook availability is not guaranteed, so make sure you get yours! If you think you bought your Yearbook at registration please double check your receipt. Seniors, never bought a yearbook? Eastonia is having an overstock sale that will allow you to purchase all 4 years for only $100. Get your first 3 years today and reserve your senior book for Yearbook day. We only have 30 sets to sell so get yours while supplies last! Senior Ads go on sale October 1st so Seniors, Parents, and Clubs be aware! Individual Ads (1/15 page) are $35, and groups of four or more can purchase 1/3 of a page for $200. Look for more order information on the East High Website. Picture Make-Up day is September 18th. This is your last chance to get your mug shot for the Yearbook. Students will be called out of class during the day to have missing pictures taken. Students who want retakes can have them done before school, during lunch, or after school only. Be part of something bigger and get into the Yearbook!

4 JOIN NATIONAL HONORS SOCIETY If your sophomore, junior, or senior is interested in volunteering, needs service hours, or is looking to make new friends, National Honor Society is the club to join! As a nationally recognized organization, we focus on service learning, completing a service project every month, and recognizing students that demonstrate scholarship, leadership, and outstanding character. If you have any questions, easthighnationalhonorsociety@gmail.com THE GERMAN-AMERICAN PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM (GAPP) GAPP is going to continue at East High School! East High is hosting 16 students from Gymnasium Trittau, Germany in the spring of They will be coming on March 12 and stay until April 3. Since they are coming over spring break, we do have a great trip to Southern Utah planned for them during that time as well as other smaller activities. The German students are very excited to come to Salt Lake City! So, let's make their time memorable! If your family is interested in hosting one of the German exchange students in the spring, please let us know ASAP. The benefit of hosting - besides an awesome intercultural experience in your own home with the potential of becoming a lifelong friendship with somebody from Germany - is that you will also be at the top of the list when it comes to going to Germany. The team played in Division 1 Varsity this summer and had a winning record, making it to the playoffs. Winter season begins mid- September and we are looking forward to a great year. New this year, we will have a Varsity team and a Junior Varsity team. No experience is required to join the East Hockey team.
