2 1. Key Vocabulary and Grammar Telling a Story To tell a story we usually mix two tenses. The Pretérito Imperfecto, to set the scene or describe the background to the story, and the Pretérito Indefinido, to refer to single actions in the past. Ejemplo Estaba tan cansado que me dormí Example I was so tired that I fell asleep In the example above Estaba is in the Pretérito Imperfecto, and Me dormí is in the Pretérito Indefinido. Use of Pretérito Indefinido: Single actions that finished in the past. Ejemplo Dimos un paseo en avión Vimos una cacatúa Fuimos a la ópera Example We went on a trip in a plane We saw a Cockatoo We went to the opera Use of Pretérito Imperfecto: To set the scene. Describing the background to a story. (Please note that there are other uses of the Pretérito Imperfecto, see Episode 17.) 4 2. The Transcript of the conversation Ben Hoy vamos a hablar del mejor viaje que hemos hecho Marina y yo juntos. A dónde fuimos Marina? Marina Eh hace tres años, en estas mismas fechas, fuimos a Australia. Ben Sí. Marina A pasar la Navidad. Ben Claro. Era un diciembre muy frío. Marina Sí, me acuerdo. Hacía mucho frío, y la gente estaba muy ocupada preparando las compras de Navidad. Ben Sí. Marina También teníamos muchas cenas, y fiestas, con amigos y compañeros de trabajo. Ben Entonces nosotros decidimos escaparnos del frío y de las Navidades, y fuimos a Sydney en Australia, a ver a mi amigo Tom que vivía allí entonces. Y a qué hora llegamos? Marina Llegamos a Sydney a las nueve de la noche. Y hacía un tiempo increíble, y podíamos estar en manga corta. Ben Claro. Al día siguiente empezamos a descubrir Sydney. Cómo era Sydney en diciembre? Marina Pues muy bonito, lleno de vida, estaba lleno de vida. La gente estaba tomando el sol en las Playas, eh haciendo surf. Ben Claro, todo el mundo hacía surf. Marina Haciendo barbacoas también. Ben Lo que más me impresionó de Sydney, ese primer día, fue la naturaleza. Los árboles estaban llenos de pájaros exóticos. Marina Sí, Vimos una cacatúa. Ben En el parque, en el centro de la ciudad, había unos murciélagos enormes! Marina Sí, como cuatro veces del tamaño de los que ves en España. Mhmm. Ben Sí. Entonces luego por la noche qué hicimos? Marina Fuimos a La Ópera, a ver un concierto. Ben Claro, La Ópera de Sydney es muy famoso. Marina Sí, famosa. Ben Pero yo estaba tan cansado que me dormí, durante casi todo el concierto. 5 Marina Eso fue el, el jet lag. Ben El jet lag, sí, que en Español también se dice jet lag. Marina Jet lag. Ben Eso. Bueno Marina, qué es lo que más te gustó de Sydney? Marina Me gustó mucho las playas y la sensación de estar en la naturaleza, en una ciudad, pero con la naturaleza al alcance de la mano. Ben Eso es lo que más me gustó a mi también. 6 3. Translation of the conversation Ben Today we are going to talk about the best trip that Marina and I have made together. Where did we go to Marina? Marina Ummm three years ago, around this time, we went to Australia. Ben Yes. Marina For Christmas. Ben Yes. It was a very cold December. Marina Yes, I remember. It was freezing, and everyone was very busy getting the Christmas shopping done. Ben Yes. Marina We also had a lot of meals and parties with friends and work mates. Ben So, we decided to escape the cold and Christmas, and we went to Sydney in Australia, to see my friend Tom, who was living there at the time. And what time did we arrive? Marina We arrived in Sydney at nine o clock at night. And the weather was incredible, we were able to be in short sleeves. Ben Of course. The next day we started to discover Sydney. What was Sydney like in December? Marina Well, very beautiful, full of life, it was full of life. People were sunbathing on the beaches, surfing. Ben Yes, everyone was surfing. Marina Having barbeques as well. Ben And above all it was really hot. A really big change for us. And what did we do on the first day? Marina Well on the first day we went for a trip on a plane and flew over Sydney. Ben Yes, we spent an hour and a half in a plane, a small plane, over Sydney. And how beautiful it was from the air! Marina Yes, the north of Sydney is full of small islands and lots of water. Ben What really impressed me about Sydney, on that first day, was the abundance of nature. The trees were full of exotic birds. Marina Yes, we saw a cockatoo. Ben In the park, in the center of the city, there were some enormous bats! Marina Yes, about four times the size of the ones you see in Spain. Mhmm. Ben Yes, so, later that night, what did we do? Marina We went to the opera, to see a concert. Ben Yes, the Sydney Opera House is very famous. Marina Yes, famous. Marina Diez and Ben Curtis

7 Ben But I was so tired that I fell asleep, for nearly all of the concert. Marina That was the jet lag. Ben The jet lag, yes, in Spanish we also say jet lag. Marina Jet lag. Ben That s right. Well Marina, what did you most like about Sydney? Marina I loved the beaches and the sensation of being amongst nature, in a city, but with nature so close at hand. Ben That s what I liked most as well. Sydney is like the countryside, but with houses. Marina Mhmm. Ben And I want to go back soon. Marina Me too! ~ ~ Marina Diez and Ben Curtis

9 5. Cool Spanish! Más lento que el caballo del malo When something or someone is very slow we can say that they are slower (más lento) than the bad guy s horse (el caballo del malo). The bad guy s horse is always slower than the good guy s in Westerns! Este tren es más lento que el caballo del malo. This train is really, really slow. Ir a toda leche (Very informal) This literally means to go at full milk, and is used when something or someone is going much too fast. But don t ask me what milk has to do with speed! No me entero de nada, este profesor va a toda leche! I can t understand a thing, this teacher is going way too fast! Marina Diez and Ben Curtis
