2 Did you know...? It may look like kids are just riding tricycles but there is so much more going on in this exhibit. Problem-solving, navigating space and negotiating with peers are all common skills frequently used by children in Pedal Power. The alternating foot movements, called bilateral movement, that are necessary for pedaling a tricycle actually help build connections in your child's brain. Your child's cognitive development is directly influenced by the use of both sides of his/her brain. An indicator of progress in this realm is the emerging preference for the left or right hand. Children typically demonstrate hand preference by the age five to six years. Notice how your child is estimating speed and distance when bringing the tricycle to a stop. Sometimes the laws of physics prevail! Each time your child goes through this process, s/he is using math and science concepts and is learning how to control his/her body.

3 Did you know...? As your child navigates through the herd of tricycles and other children and adults wandering around, s/he is fostering spatial skills and relying on keen peripheral vision. S/he is also learning left, right, forward, backwards, fast, slow and stop! As your child drives through the trike wash, s/he learns through trial and error how to maneuver through a confined space. Sometimes your child may need your help with the scooter or pedaling on the trike. It is developmentally appropriate for him/her to gradually build on previous skills. Think of the special bonding time the two of you will have together! Waiting to take a turn is sometimes a hard concept for a child to grasp, especially for younger children. Pedal Power offers lots of opportunities to nurture patience, much like you driving your car and waiting for your turn at a stop sign. On your way home from the Museum, point out people patiently waiting for their turns at stop signs, at traffic lights and in lines at the drive-thru.

6 Sabía usted...? Puede parecer que los niños sólo andan en triciclos, pero mucho más está sucediendo en esta exhibición. Resolución de problemas, navegando por el espacio y negociando con los compañeros son habilidades comunes que usan frecuentemente los niños en la Energía del Pedal. El movimiento alternando los pies, llamado movimiento bilateral, el cual es necesario para pedalear un triciclo, ayuda a crear conexiones en el cerebro de los niños. El desarrollo cognitivo de sus hijos está directamente influenciado por el uso de ambos lados del cerebro. Un indicador del progreso en este ámbito es la preferencia por la mano izquierda o la derecha. Generalmente, los niños demuestran qué mano prefieren para los cinco a seis años de edad. Note cómo aprenden sus hijos a calcular velocidad y distancia cuando detienen el triciclo. A veces las leyes de la física prevalecen! Cada vez que los niños pasan por este proceso, están usando conceptos matemáticos y científicos, y están aprendiendo a controlar sus cuerpos.

Mientras sus hijos navegan a través de un tropel de triciclos y otros niños y adultos a su alrededor, están fomentando habilidades espaciales y confiando en una aguda visión periférica. También están aprendiendo direcciones como: izquierda, derecha, adelante, atrás, rápido, lento, y alto! Cuando sus hijos manejan por el lavado de triciclos, aprenden a maniobrar a través de un espacio reducido a base de ensayo y error. A veces sus hijos necesitarán su ayuda con la patineta o a pedalear el triciclo. Desde el punto de vista del desarrollo, es apropiado que los niños desarrollen gradualmente habilidades nuevas basadas en las previas. Piense en el tiempo tan especial que pasarán juntos! Esperar su turno a veces es un concepto difícil de entender, especialmente para los niños más pequeños. La Energía del Pedal ofrece cantidad de oportunidades para cultivar paciencia, como cuando usted maneja su auto y espera su turno en un señalamiento de alto. En su camino de regreso a casa del Museo, señale a las personas que están esperando pacientemente su turno en los señalamientos de alto, los semáforos, y en cola en los restaurantes de comida rápida.
