1 Blair Chalker Fall 2007 Gender of adjectives Lesson Plan Objective: Students will... Recognize differences of gender in adjectives and use them in descriptions of people. Write and say descriptions of people and their clothing. Vocabulary: Alto/a Guapo/bonita Viejo/a Joven Niña/o Rubio/a Moreno/a Feo/a Gordo/a Delgado/a Rico/a Famoso/a Pero Y También Materials: Photos for Comprehensible Input & activities Student activity Sheets Whiteboards/Markers Comprehensible Input: I will demonstrate the difference between masculine and feminine adjectives by putting up photos of famous people and describing them using adjectives that match their gender (ex: Brad es guapo y rico. Angelina es bonita y rica.). I will also use adjectives that are the same for either gender, such as joven. I will ask questions about the people to check for comprehension ( Quién es rica, Brad o Angelina?). Students will have already learned these descriptive adjectives, and I will review several in the input, focusing on gender. At the end, I will ask students what they noticed about the descriptions and do a short explanation. Input Activity 1: (Reading) There will be photos of people posted around the room, including distracters. Students will be given a few written sentences that describe a person and what they are wearing. Students will look at the photos and determine which person is being described. Input Activity 2: (Listening) There will be photos of famous people on the board, in pairs. Students will complete a two-step multiple-choice activity. First, they will listen to a description of a person on their paper and choose which of the people is being described. Some of the statements may be false, but will only match one of the people

2 due to the gender. Then they will choose whether they agree or disagree with the statement (this ensures that they actually understand the meaning of the word). Teacher Script: 1. Es muy guapo, famoso, y bajo. Es un poco loco. 2. Es alta, delgada, y rica. También es muy inteligente. 3. Es moreno y muy rico. También es feo. 4. Es rubia, bonita, y talentosa. No es vieja. 5. Es joven pero no es niño. Es bajo y gordo. Output Activity 1 (Speaking): Students will work with a partner. They will first draw a person on their whiteboard. Then they will describe their person to their partner, and the partner will draw the person on their own whiteboard according to the description. Then they will compare their whiteboards to see if they match. They will be required to use at least 5 adjectives. (One partner will draw/describe a female and the other will draw/describe a male.) Output Activity 2 (Speaking): This is an information-gap activity. Students will be in pairs and will each be given a sheet with 8 photos of people on it. Four names will be left blank on each paper. Students will describe the people that don t have names on their paper to their partner; the partner will tell them the name of the person they re describing. Output Activity 3 (Writing): Various pictures will be posted on the board. Students will choose one picture and write a paragraph describing the person in the picture. They will leave out the person s name; the teacher will read a few and the class will try to guess which person is being described.

Lleva un abrigo. 5. Es guapo y joven. Tiene bigote y pelo muy corto. 6. Es delgada y alta. Lleva un vestido. También lleva un sombrero. 7. Lleva una corbata. Tiene pelo castaño. Es baja. No es gorda.

4 Input Activity 2: Listen to the teacher read the descriptions and circle the name of the famous person that is being described. Then check whether you agree or disagree with the description. 1. A. 7 Output activity 3: Writing Choose one of the pictures on the board and write a paragraph describing the person in the picture. You must write at least 4 sentences, include at least 4 descriptive adjectives, at least 2 pieces of clothing, and 3 connector words (pero, y también). Do NOT include the person s name (the class will try to guess which person you are describing). Modelo: Es muy guapo. También es joven y moreno. No es alto, pero no es muy bajo. Lleva un saco, una corbata y un sombrero. No es gordo; es muy delgado. Rubric: Did you write at least 4 sentences? Did you include at least 4 adjectives? Did you include at least 2 items of clothing?
