It has been a pleasure getting to know many parents, students and community members, and I look forward to meeting those of you who I have not had the pleasure of meeting yet. Everyone has made me feel very welcome and part of the community. Thank you. The staff and I are committed to providing our students with the best well-rounded educational experiences possible. We believe in providing an atmosphere that encourages Respect, Responsibility and Community. We believe in and provide opportunities to our students that accentuate their strengths and encourage new learning. We believe that every child can and will learn. This year our theme is VICTORY TOGETHER! This idea encompasses our belief that we as a community will help our students achieve beyond their potential. It is imperative that we all work together in support at home with consistent routines for homework, play and rest and at school with engaging and enriching activities that stimulate the mind and fortify the body. Together we will help our community school achieve the status we all work hard to obtain and that our students deserve...an A!!! In order to continue to build upon the great traditions and reputation that is Herrera, we need your support. We will be starting a new Parent Teacher Organization at Herrera. There will be many opportunities to volunteer as a Copy Parent, Room Parent, or on various committees that support our children, teachers, the school and community. We will be sending out a notice shortly for an initial meeting for those interested in becoming officers of the PTO and those looking to support in different ways. Communication is critical to the process of fostering and educating children. Teachers and parents need to be open to one another and to seek resolution for the best interest of the child. Always speak with the teacher first, regarding a concern about your child. This initial process is vital in building the trust that is essential for our school s overall success. I do ask that if you need to speak with your child s teacher that you set an appointment with them either before, after school or during a designated time during the day to ensure enough time to properly address the concern and to honor the teaching and learning time of our staff and students. Safety for our students, staff and community members is of the highest priority here at Herrera. One way to ensure the safety of all is to register and receive a visitors badge at the front office before entering the campus during the school day (7:55 a.m. -2:55 p.m.). This helps us identify who should and shouldn t be on campus. I would like to thank everyone again for the incredible welcome and outpouring of support that you have extended. Together, we will continue to build upon the grand reputation and A+ status of Herrera..VICTORY TO- GETHER!!! Mr. Sotomayor. The principal welcomed parents and shared his vision for the coming school year. Parents also met with the SRO, Vicki Daubard. She also spoke to parents about upcoming parent workshop opportunities.

2 School Principal, Mr. Sotomayor, is committed in providing educational parent opportunities through a program called, Parent University. These will be a series of classes or workshops for parents. They will be provided by various teachers, our School Resource Officer, and community based organizations. We will inform you of these opportunities in monthly newsletters, flyers, and our school website. We would like to hear from you if you have any suggestions for these upcoming classes. Please contact Mr. Vega at Thank you! Southwest Human Development, with a grant from First things First, will offer parents with children newborn through five years the opportunity to learn how to build early literacy skills and help children enter school ready to learn! This is a FREE 8-week workshop meeting every Tuesday, from 1pm to 3pm. Workshops begin August 20th, please go to room 214 to register. Parents will receive books each week and receive a certificate of completion at the end of the program. Refreshments and snacks will be served during each workshop! Children may attend workshops with parents! Please join us for a Parent University class on September 10th in Room #214. The class will be offered by our School Resource Officer at 8:30am. The topic discussed is: Introduction to Student Success and Safety FREE ESL CLASSES Classes every Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 8:30am to 10:30am. Please meet in room #214 to register. 3 Page 3 Assistant Principal: Clare Okyere Welcome back to another great school year! I am excited to serve your children during the school year as Herrera s Assistant Principal. Working together, we will achieve academic, artistic, and linguistic success for all students. In order to do so, it is critical for students to have regular and timely attendance. I appreciate your observance of our new school hours: 7:55 a.m. 2:55 p.m. Thank you in advance for ensuring your children arrive to school each day before 7:55 so they are prepared for a successful day of learning. Students should be at school every day unless they are sick. In the event of sickness, please call the office at (602) to verify the absence. In addition, it is critical students remain in school for the duration of the school day so they do not miss out on learning activities. If you need to schedule a daytime appointment for your child, please do your best to do so on Wednesday s early release schedule after 1:00 p.m. We appreciate your support as we commit to provide the best education possible for your children. Be sure to check the newsletters for student shout outs! A Message from the School Resource Officer, Vicki Daubard Welcome back to another great year at Silvestre S. Herrera Elementary School. I am your continuing School Resource Officer (SRO), Vicki Daubard with the Phoenix Police Department. I have worked for the department for 16 years in various positions in the Patrol Division, Community Relations Bureau, and Communications Bureau. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Arizona University. Some of the activities I like to do include listening to music, scuba diving, teaching scuba diving, and running! My role is part of the School Safety Program. The School Safety Program was established by ARS in 1994 for the purpose of placing School Resource Officers (SRO) and Juvenile Probation Officers (JPO) on school grounds to contribute to safe school environments that are conducive to teaching and learning. Through comprehensive prevention and intervention approaches, School Safety Program funded officers maintain a visible presence on campus; deter delinquent and violent behaviors; serve as an available resource to the school community; and provide students and staff with Law- Related Education instruction and training. Officers develop positive interactive relationships with the students, the staff, and the community that they serve. This proactive, prevention-based program is cultivated through collaborative working partnerships between officers, school administration, teachers, and police and juvenile probation departments. May 2012) BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: I want to encourage everyone to do the right thing when it comes to the safety of our students. Please remember to follow all traffic laws. They were implemented to mitigate risk. Let s set the example and make sure we are parking correctly in the right areas, looking around our vehicles, using crosswalks, and watching our speed around our most precious children. Parents please talk to your children about your before and after school plan. How are they getting to school and how are they getting home? Will anyone be picking them up? Who is allowed to pick them up? The more consistent the plan is on a day to day basis, the easier it is for kids to follow. I look forward to seeing everyone again at Herrera and meeting our new students, parents, and teaching staff. School Social Worker: Cassie Richey My name is Cassie Richey and I ve lived in the Phoenix area for 3 years. I come from a big family and love to spend time with family and friends. Things I enjoy: live music, rock climbing, yoga, soccer, hiking, camping, movies, puppies, and getting to know new people. I ve been in the social work field for 6 years with experience in residential treatment centers, outpatient behavioral health, and community crisis response. I have a particular passion for treatment of the following disorders: substance abuse, attachment, personality, anxiety and depression, mood, and oppositional defiant, with particular emphasis on trauma, abuse, and self-harm. I think that healing occurs best within a family! The services I provide at Herrera

4 Elementary include: *Individual counseling, (including occasional family involvement in sessions) *Group counseling *Collaboration, with the Parent Engagement Liaison (Jorge Vega) in obtaining resources for food, shelter, clothing, etc. when needed. *Involved in peer mediation, bullying issues, and psycho-education to school staff. *Participation in RTI (Response To Intervention) & managing 504 plans & more! My number is and my office hours are 7:50am to 3:15 pm Monday-Friday. Norma Sanchez-Ulloa Bilingual Counselor My name is Norma Ulloa and I am the school s Counselor. I have been a counselor for over 15 years. I have served the wonderful Herrera community for ten years. I am married, have three daughters and 4 grandchildren. I provide a variety of services including: Discipline, Grief Counseling, Positive Relationships, Coping with divorce, Getting along with others, Friendships, Anger Management, Meditation, Yoga and Relaxation techniques. Annette Brown: Instructional Enrichment Intervention Specialist My name is Annette Brown and I have been teaching 21 years. I went to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee - Panthers. I earned my master s degree at the University of Phoenix. My son and his wife are expected a baby boy in December. I have a golden-doodle named Bene. We hike Piestewa Peak daily and I love to travel and have traveled to 25 different countries! I chose to work at Herrera because of the awesome students and staff and I know we are the best school in the state! Mrs. Erickson: 3rd/4th Grade ELD Teacher I am from Roscoe, Illinois where I was born and raised. I attended Eastern Illinois University. This summer was very eventful for me. I got married and travelled to Japan. Earlier this year my husband and I adopted a cat and named her Magumi. This is my second year teaching at Herrera. I love to travel and read. I chose to work at Herrera because the people here are like one big family! Scott Slivken: 5th Grade Teacher Hello, my name is Scott Slivken and I have been teaching for 3 year including this year, and have dabbled in 4 th and 5 th grade. I went to Ohio University for undergrad and ASU for grad school. I was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and spent the rest of my younger years in Dayton, OH and Athens, OH. I have a very large extended family, however none of them live in Arizona. It is the prototypical large Jewish family. I used to be a professional bowler! I love to run competitively, hang out outdoors, and hang with my friendz! I chose to work at Herrera because of the wonderful community and amazingly interesting children that attend. Kaitlin Kluvo: Dance Teacher Hello! My name is Kaitlin Kluvo and I am the new dance teacher at Herrera. I am so excited and proud to work at a school as unique as Herrera! I grew up in AZ and I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. I eventually got a job as a classroom teacher in the Scottsdale school district. I LOVED teaching 4th and 5th grade and I was there for 5 years. My other passion is dance and when I saw the job open at Herrera as a dance teacher, I knew I had to go for it! One interesting fact about me? I am the only girl and I have four brothers! Abelardo Gambino: Cafeteria Manager My Name is Abelardo Gambino also known as Lalo. I been working for the district for a year and a half, I worked at Dunbar as a Custodian and at Garfield in the kitchen. I went to school at Rio Vista in south Phoenix. I am from Phoenix Az, I have one sister. My favorite hobby is working on cars. I chose to work at Herrera because it was a better opportunity to move up in the district. Herrera is a great school, I like the environment here. I am planning on staying as long as I can. Laurie Jagoda: Math Instructional Coach My name is Laurie Jagoda and I am thrilled to join the Herrera family as the new Math Instructional Coach. I recently moved to Phoenix from Oakland, California where I was teaching 5 th grade and coaching teachers for the Oakland Teaching Fellows program. Prior, I was teaching 5 th through 7 th grade mathematics at the Harlem Children s Zone and supervising student teachers from the City College of New York where I received my master s in childhood education. I also taught 4 th grade at a Spanish dual language charter school in East Harlem. Before NYC, I was a student teacher in Boston while studying elementary education at Boston University. In my spare time I love doing yoga, cycling, cooking, hiking and salsa dancing with my fiancé. I am looking forward to supporting teachers with their math instruction this year in any way that I can! Media Specialist: Latiesha Guy For six years, I have worked for the Phoenix Public Library system performing a variety of duties from shelving to helping organize summer reading programs. I began in 2004 at the Harmon branch and have since worked at the Burton Barr and Saguaro branches. I completed my Associate of Arts degree at Mesa Community College in 2010 and plan to attend Arizona State University to study music education. I enjoy playing guitar, listening to and finding good music, writing short stories, going to shows and, you guessed it, read! I chose Herrera because I was very excited about the dual language and performing arts programs being accessible its students. I feel very privileged to be working with such wonderful students, parents, teachers and staff!

Es difícil creer que ya estamos en el segundo mes del año escolar Ha sido un placer conocer a muchos padres, estudiantes y miembros de la comunidad, y espero conocer a ustedes que no he tenido el placer de conocer todavía. Todos me han sido sentir muy bienvenido y parte de la comunidad. Gracias. Es imprescindible que todos trabajemos juntos para apoyar en casa con rutinas consistentes para la tarea, e l tiempo libre para jugar y el descanso. En la escuela con actividades estimulantes que enriquecen la mente y fortalecen el cuerpo. Juntos ayudaremos a nuestra comunidad escolar lograr el estatus que tanto trabajamos y que nuestros estudiantes merecen para alcanzar la. A!!! Con el fin de continuar basándose en la gran tradición y reputación que es Herrera, necesitamos de su apoyo. Vamos a comenzar una nueva Organización de Padres y Maestros de Herrera. Habrá muchas oportunidades para ser voluntario. Por ejemplo, un padre que ayude a los maestros sacar copias, padre voluntario en el de Salón de Padres o en varios comités que apoyan a nuestros hijos, los profesores, la escuela y la comunidad. Vamos a enviar un aviso breve para una reunión para los interesados en convertirse en oficiales de este grupo y aquellos padres que deseen ayudar y apoyar la escuela en diferentes formas. La comunicación es fundamental para el proceso de educar a los niños. Los maestros y los padres tienen que estar abiertos a otros y para buscar una solución para el mejor interés del niño. Siempre hable con el maestro primero sobre cualquier preocupación de su niño Este proceso inicial es de vital importancia en la construcción de la confianza que es esencial para el éxito general de la escuela. Yo pido que si tiene que hablar con el maestro de su hijo, lo haga haciendo una cita con ellos, ya sea antes o después de la escuela o durante un tiempo determinado para garantizar el tiempo suficiente para poder buscar una solución y respetar la enseñanza y el tiempo de aprendizaje de nuestro personal y estudiantes. La seguridad de nuestros estudiantes, personal de escuela, y miembros de la comunidad es de la más alta prioridad aquí en Herrera. Una manera para asegurar la seguridad de todos es registrarse y recibir una identificación de visitante en la oficina de la escuela antes de entrar a la escuela durante el día escolar (7:55 a.m. 2:55 p.m. ). Estas clases las darán varios maestros, el Oficial de Recursos Escolares, especialistas en matemáticas y lectura, en combinación con organizaciones comunitarias que hemos formado asociaciones para poder lograr esta meta. Esta iniciativa se llamara Parent University o Universidad para Padres. Estaremos informándolos con folletos, información en los boletines mensuales, y en la pagina de internet de la escuela. Este es un programa GRATIS de 8 semanas que consiste de clases cada martes de 1pm a 2:45pm. Este programa gratis empezó el día 20 de agosto y todavía puede asistir! Padres recibirán libros cada semana para compartir y leer a sus niños y un certificada de participación al final del programa. Habrá refrescos para los niños y padres durante cada clase. 7 Page 3 Asistente al Director: Clare Okyere Bienvenidos a otro gran año escolar! Estoy muy emocionado de servir a sus hijos durante el año escolar como Asistente al Director en Herrera. Trabajando juntos, vamos a lograr el éxito académico, artístico y lingüístico para todos los estudiantes. Para ello, es fundamental que los estudiantes tengan una asistencia regular y puntual. Aprecio su observancia de nuestras nuevas horas de clase: 7:55am - 2:55pm. Gracias por adelanto para asegurar que sus hijos llegan a la escuela todos los días antes de las 7:55 para que estén preparados para un día de éxito y aprendizaje. Un Mensaje del Oficial de Recursos Escolares (SRO), Vicki Daubard Bienvenidos a otro gran año escolar en nuestra Escuela Herrera. Yo seré su Oficial de Recursos Escolares (SRO), Vicki Daubard este año otra vez con el Departamento de Policía. Yo he trabajado con el Departamento de Policía por 16 años en diferentes capacidades en la división de Patrullas, Relaciones de la Comunidad, Y el Departamento de Comunicaciones. Yo recibí mi licenciatura en Ciencias de la Universidad de Arizona Norte. Algunas de las actividades que goza incluyes escuchar música, buceo, enseñar clases de buceo, y correr! El Programa de Seguridad Escolar fue establecida por el ARS en 1994 por el propósito de tener Oficiales de Recursos en las escuelas (SRO) y Oficiales de Probación Juveniles en las escuelas para contribuir al ambiente seguro de la escuela que son para el propósito de educar y aprender. Por medios de prevención y intervención, el Programa de Seguridad Escolar da fondos para que los oficiales puedan mantener un presencia visible en las escuelas; impedir comportamientos de delincuencia y violencia, servir como un recurso para la comunidad, y proveer a los estudiantes y al personal escolar información de la ley y la educación y entrenamiento. Los Oficiales desarrollan relaciones positivas con los estudiantes, el personal escolar, y la comunidad que sirven. Este proceso proactivo basado en el programa de prevención, esta cultivado en colaboración en estableciendo asociaciones entre oficiales, la administración de la escuela, maestros (as), y departamentos de probación juvenil. -Manual para el Programa de Seguridad Escolar, Departamento de Educación de Arizona (rev. Mayo 2012). El Regreso a la Escuela con Seguridad: Quiero animar a todos que hagan lo correcto al respeto a la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes. Recuerden a todas las reglas de tráfico. Fueron establecidas para bajar el riesgo. Vamos a poder el ejemplo y asegurar que nos estemos estacionando correctamente en los lugares apropiados, inspeccionando nuestros vehículos, utilizando los caminos de peatones, y respetar el límite de velocidad en la área de la escuela para la seguridad de nuestros niños preciosos. Quien tiene permiso para recogerlos de la escuela? Si tiene un plan consistente cada día, será más fácil para su estudiante seguirlos. Soy casado y tengo tres hijas y cuatro nietos. Erickson: Maestra de 3º/4º Grado ELD Yo soy de Roscoe, Illinois donde nazi y crecí. Asistí a la Universidad de Illinois del Norte. Este verano fue muy ocupado para mí. Me case y viajamos para Japón. Este año también adoptamos un gato y le nombramos Magumi. Este es mi segundo año enseñando en Herrera. Amo viajar y leer. Escogí trabajar en Herrera porque todos somos como una gran familia! Scott Slivken: Maestro de 5º Grado Hola, mi nombre es Scott Slivken y este es mi tercer año enseñando. También he tenido la oportunidad de enseñar 4º y 5º grado. Asistí la Universidad de Ohio y recibí una licenciatura y una maestría en la Universidad Estatal de Arizona (ASU). Nazi en Des Moines, Iowa, y pase el resto de mis años jóvenes en Dayton, OH y Athens, OH. Tengo una familia grande, sin embargo ningún de ellos viven en Arizona. Nuestra familia es típicamente Judía. Mi nombre es Kaitlin Kluvo y soy la maestro nueva de danza en Herrera. Estoy muy emocionada y orgullosa en trabajar en una escuela tan única como Herrera! Crecí en Arizona y siempre supe que quiera ser maestra. Eventualmente trabaje como maestra en el distrito de Scottsdale. Yo AMO enseñar el grado 4º y 5º y tuve la oportunidad de hacerlo en el distrito de Scottsdale por 5 años. Mi otra pasión es la danza. Cuando mire la oportunidad para trabajar en Herrera como maestra de danza, supe que era para mí! Algo interesante de mí? Soy la única mujer de cuarto hermanos! Abelardo Gambino: Manejador de la Cafetería: Abelardo Gambino Mi nombre es Alejandro Gambino también conocido como Lalo. He trabajado en este distrito escolar por un año y medio. Trabaje en la Escuela Dunbar en mantenimiento y en la cocina de la Escuela Garfield. Asistí la Escuela Rio Vista en el sur de Phoenix. Yo soy de Phoenix y tengo una hermana. Mi pasatiempo es trabajar en mis carros. Escogí trabajar en Herrera porque era una mejor oportunidad para mí. Herrera es una gran escuela y me gusta el ambiente aquí! Planeo trabajar aquí todo los años que pueda. Laurie Jagoda: Entrenadora de Matemáticas Mi nombre es Laurie Jagoda y estoy muy emocionada en ser parte de la familia Herrera y ser la nueva entrenadora de matemáticas. Recientemente me mude de Oakland, California donde estaba enseñando 5º grado y entrenando maestros para el programa Oakland Teaching Fellows. Anteriormente, enseñe grados 5º a 7º grados en Harlem Children s Zone y supervisando estudiantes para ser maestros en el Colegio de la Cuidad de Nueva York donde recibí mi maestría en educación temprana. También enseñe 4º grado en una escuela de dos idiomas de español en el este de Harlem. Antes de Nueva York, fui estudiante en Boston mientras estudiaba educación primaria en la Universidad de Boston. En mi tiempo libre me encanta hacer yoga, usar mi bicicleta, cocinar, ir de excursiones, y bailar salsa con mi novio. Media Specialist: Latiesha Guy Yo he trabajado por seis años en las librerías de la cuidad de Phoenix haciendo diferentes trabajas desde guardo libros en los libreros ha organizado grupos de lectura este verano. Empecé en el año 2004 en la Librería Harmon y he trabajado en las librerías Burton Barr y Saguaro. Termine mis dos años de estudio en el Colegio Comunitario de Mesa en el año 2010 y planeo asistir la Universidad Estatal de Arizona para estudiar educación en música. Me gusta tocar la guitarra, escuchar música, escribir cuentos cortos, ir a shows, y sobre todo, leer!
