As you are enjoying your last summer days, click on the website link for the required summer reading for every single student (aka The BIG READ) and for additional reading for those students enrolled in advanced standing and Advanced Placement. Because belonging is a primary focus to start our school year, WHS conducts summer reading that everyone one on campus completes. The energy that will result out of reading the same titles and participating in the same book discussion groups helps me set the academic tone and the emotional momentum for the school year for students and for staff. In true WHS fashion, these titles were selected by student voice. Hard copy books and e-books are available for check out from WHS library and the public library. Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell (nonfiction with case studies that shed light on how people achieve success) Breaking Through by Francisco Jiminez (follows last summer s most popular Big Read selection, The Circuit) In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (read this scary one with a flashlight!) The Fault in Our Stars by John Green (don t settle for seeing the movie!) I am welcoming some veteran Wildcats to administrative positions. They bring a wealth of positive history with and knowledge about our students and campus to their new positions. New AVP Wendy Porter (administrative vice-principal) will be working with student last name M Z alongside veteran AVP Alvaro Calderon working with student last names A L. New Athletic director Chuck Velschow and assistant athletic director Erin Kilty will be working with our student athletes. All their offices are in the admin building near the bus circle. Read elsewhere in the Communicat about the teachers new to WHS. The larger teaching staff is due to enrollment growth of about 100 students (approximately 1900 total enrollment), teachers graduating to retirement or other life choices, and class size reduction generously funded by the Foundation. From Principal Diane Burbank Adentro encontrara traducción al español las noticias de la administración de WHS For a smooth start to the school year, review the superintendent s mailing that you received last spring that included my letter with dates and times for arena check-in. The arena check-in information is also posted on our website. I look forward to seeing you at the all important arena check-in in August (your students gets their schedule!) and later at Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, September 4, 6:30 pm (you meet your students teachers!). Bienvenidos! The Fault in Our Stars by John Green (no vallan a veer solo la pelicula!)

10 It s Never Too Soon to Start Planning Ahead Important News from the College and Career Center This Woodside school year is all about dreaming big (but staying sensible). Some students dream of being admitted to a very selective university, some dream about being the first in their family to go to college, some dream of developing their artistic talents in big cultural centers like San Francisco or New York, some dream of learning specific skills necessary for their careers, and some dream of playing their sport with a new team in a new place. No matter what you re hoping for in the future, the best way to turn dreams into reality is to work very, very hard. The College and Career Center is here to support all of your efforts. It is packed with resources to help transform your goals into your achievements, and it s an especially good place to find information about: four-year colleges community colleges art and culinary academies vocational schools Naviance SAT and ACT tests NCAA requirements financial aid the military careers work permits SENIORS If you are planning to apply to four-year colleges, the next few months are very important. There is a bit of time to finish up your research, finalize the list of schools where you ll apply, and begin the actual applications. (Common App and UC applications are available now. CSU applications are open online October 1.) There is help for all of the above. If you are applying to fouryear colleges, you will have a scheduled, required meeting with the College Advisor in September. You can also make an individual appointment or just pop by the C&C Center with questions anytime. Additionally, on Wednesday, September 17 there is a March Into College workshop for seniors and their parents; all application questions will be answered then. On the 17th (and throughout the semester), the following ideas will be repeated a lot. Applications are not commitments. They are opportunities. If you think a four-college might be the best place for you, and you ve done serious research to make sure that the schools are a good fit, don t hesitate. Apply. Then in April, you will have options as you decide what your path will be after graduation. It s always good to have choices. Looking forward to a great year! 14 News From The PTSA Welcome back Wildcats! In this first edition of the Communicat, you will find a great deal of useful information so take a few minutes to look through and find out what will be going on as we kick off the year. The PTSA supports parents, teachers and students mostly through supporting events and programming at Woodside. Believe it or not you are still wanted and needed as a volunteer even though your student is in high school. The Communicat, the Woodside website, and other school communications are great resources for finding areas that might interest you or your family. If there is something that interests you, by all means jump in! The PTSA generally meets once a month on the first Tuesday in the MUR. Meetings begin at 7:00 pm and we work hard to wrap them up by 8:30 pm. We will be working to update our PTSA information TAB on the Woodside High School website which can be found under Parents/ Community. In the meantime if you would like to find out more or get involved, please feel free to me directly atcrystalini@mac.com. We will be kicking off our membership campaign during Arena Check-In where you will also have a chance to meet many of our PTSA volunteers in person. Finally, the PTSA relies solely on escrip and direct donations to fund our programming. When you join, please consider making an extra donation if you can toward our General Fund which supports Student Scholarships, Parent Education, and Seasons of Sharing. Have a wonderful year! Charmaine McCrystal, PTSA President Mentor Opportunities Want to make a difference in a teenagers life? Had a mentor that impacted you? Know someone else who could help? The academy programs at Woodside High School could use your help. The Academy is a small learning community made up of dedicated teachers working collaboratively. There are two academies at WHS, the Business Technology Academy and the Green Academy. During their Junior year, students may request a Community Mentor that works with them on both academic & career goals. There are many students and their career interests are widespread, ranging from fashion and nursing to engineering and information technology. I'm hoping that you, or someone that you know, might be able to participate in this program as a mentor. The commitment is approximately 2 hours per month, with most interactions via and 3 face-to-face meetings over the course of the school year. The first meeting is scheduled for November. If you or a colleague have any questions, please contact Faith Velschow, our mentor coordinator, via at velschow@yahoo.com or via phone at Thanks for considering this.
