7 Editorial DORNBRACHT the SPIRITof WATER Editorial Volume 2 Andreas Dornbracht Photography Heji Shin Welcome to the SPIRITof WATER Vol. 2. This edition will give you an overview of what motivates and inspires us: for new products, new projects and new ideas. If one were to sum up this issue with one key word, this would most certainly be the word ideal. Why? Because ideals are more than just aims as far as development and production are concerned and idealism is more than just a fortunate state. But what precisely does this mean? This booklet and future issues will give you a greater insight into our conceptual, development and production processes. This is because we believe that by doing this, you will be able to gain a better understanding of what defines the Dornbracht brand. A typical example is the article entitled The source as archetype (page 034 et seq.). In his interview with Thomas Edelmann, Benedikt Sauerland from Sieger Design reports on the creation of the ELEMENTAL SPA range, which is inspired by and takes its ideal from a natural spring. These sources also form the starting point for the third edition of Dornbracht Ritual Architecture in the Bathroom. The ELEMENTAL SPA ritual bathroom is an archaic place in which various rituals come together to allow people to rediscover their inner self (page 018 et seq.). The soundtrack to ELEMENTAL SPA forms part of the Dornbracht Culture Project Noises for Ritual Architecture, which is also presented (page 194 et seq.). Idealisation is also a topic addressed by architectural theoreticians Andreas and Ilka Ruby who go off in search of new standards in the bathroom for various ways of living (page 178 et seq.). The fact that standardisation can also mean independence is illustrated by our new architecture program SYMETRICS. Everything in this program follows a 60x60 mm grid pattern: the modules, the installations and the architecture. This allows complete freedom as far as planning is concerned, but is freedom also idealism? The article by Eva Karcher addresses the rebirth of the term idealism in our culture, which ties in with this question (page 064 et seq.). Ideals have also come into our consideration of the kitchen as a work space and living area. What can be improved, simplified or re-worked? The result is KITCHEN ZONES, which takes the concept of dividing the kitchen into work areas, as you would expect to find in commercial kitchens, and applies it to domestic kitchens (page 050 et seq.). What is more, style icon, Andrée Putman, explains her ideals, what motivates her and what inspires her during an interview in Paris (page 168 et seq.). Finally, I would like to point out a few new contributions to our Dornbracht Culture Projects, which are a source of inspiration and the result of our international cultural involvement. Amongst other things, we report on the exhibition An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar by the artist Taryn Simon, which portrays an America that is only known to very few. As part of Dornbracht Sponsorships, the exhibition came to Europe for the first time. At the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt, the exhibition showed just how far from idealism it is possible to go. Nell intervista con Thomas Edelmann, Benedikt Sauerland, Sieger Design, racconta l origine della gamma di prodotti ELEMENTAL SPA, ispirata al modello o, più propriamente, all ideale della sorgente naturale. Si pretendiésemos resumir esta edición en un tema principal, éste sería con seguridad el ideal. Por qué? Porque los ideales son más que objetivos en el desarrollo y la producción. Y la idealidad es más que un simple estado de felicidad. Pero qué significa esto concretamente? Por ejemplo, que en esta publicación, y también en las siguientes, obtendrá un conocimiento más profundo sobre nuestros procesos de búsqueda de ideas, así como de desarrollo y de producción, porque pensamos que, de este modo, podrá comprender aún mejor lo que define la marca Dornbracht. Un ejemplo es The source as archetype (página 034 y siguientes). En la entrevista con Thomas Edelmann, Benedikt Sauerland, de Sieger Design, comenta el origen del programa de productos ELEMENTAL SPA, cuyo modelo, o incluso ideal, es el manantial natural. 9 Shortcuts DORNBRACHT the SPIRITof WATER Shortcuts GOLD FOR THE DORNBRACHT TRADE FAIR STAND AT THE ISH 2007 Dornbracht was awarded the gold ADAM award, the award for excellent trade fair stands, for its trade fair stand at the ISH Dornbracht has already received this award before, at the ISH The main aim of the architecture layout of the Trade Fair 2007 was to document the further development of the company and to present the rich diversity of the brand. The starting point for the expressionist design was a clear, sculptural formal expression and a floor plan whose lines of sight continue to lead the visitor into a new world, depending on the direction from which he/she is coming. The dark prevailing mood, colour accents provided by images and films and high-quality materials came together to create a harmonious piece of architecture, which framed the individual product worlds in an extravagant, but inostensible manner. The ELEMEN- TAL SPA formed the central focus of the trade fair stand and had an exhibition pavilion all of its own. This presented the new ritual architecture on a separate stage. Flowing water and extraordinary materials such as Corten steel, marble and copper combine to create an individual world within the overall concept. ORO PER LO STAND ESPOSITIVO DI DORNBRACHT ALLA ISH 2007 Per lo stand espositivo alla ISH 2007, Dornbracht è stato insignito dell ADAM d oro, il premio per i migliori allestimenti fieristici. Questo riconoscimento era Exhibition view Dornbracht ISH 2007 trade fair stand, Frankfurt/Main Photography Uwe Spoering già stato attribuito a Dornbracht in occasione della sua partecipazione alla ISH La richiesta principale dell architettura fieristica 2007 era di documentare l evoluzione dell azienda e di rappresentare la ricchezza di sfaccettature del marchio. Il punto di partenza per l allestimento espressionistico era dato da una lingua formale, chiara e scultorea, e da una pianta, i cui assi visuali aprissero ripetutamente al visitatore nuovi mondi, a prescindere dalla direzione da cui giungeva. L atmosfera di base tendente all oscurità, gli accenti di colore delle immagini e dei film, unitamente ai materiali pregiati, si sono inseriti in un architettura armonica, formando una cornice stravagante, ma non palese per ogni mondo di prodotti. Il cuore dello stand espositivo era il programma ELEMENTAL SPA, collocato in un proprio padiglione. Qui la nuova archi- tettura rituale è stata presentata su un palcoscenico esclusivo, creando un mondo specifico nell ambito del concetto generale con acqua corrente e materiali inusuali quali l acciaio Corten, il marmo e il rame. ORO PARA EL STAND DE DORNBRACHT EN LA FERIA ISH 2007 Por su stand de la feria ISH 2007, Dornbracht ha sido galardonado con el oro del ADAM, el premio para stands de feria destacados. Este galardón ya lo recibió Dornbracht por su presentación en la ISH de El planteamiento central de la arquitectura de la feria en el 2007 era documentar el desarrollo continuado de la empresa y presentar la riqueza de facetas de la marca. El punto de partida Floor plan Dornbracht ISH 2007 trade fair stand, Frankfurt/Main For more views visit del diseño expresionista era un lenguaje de formas claras y escultóricas y una planta cuyos ejes visuales abren un mundo siempre nuevo para el visitante, dependiendo de la dirección de la que provenga. El ambiente básico que se mantiene oscuro, los acentos de color a través de imágenes y películas, así como los materiales de alta calidad se unieron para formar una arquitectura armónica, que conseguía un marco extravagante pero no preponderante para cada uno de los mundos en que se agrupan los productos. El núcleo del stand de la feria era el ELEMENTAL SPA, instalado en un pabellón propio. En él, la nueva arquitectura ritual se presentó en un escenario propio. Para ello, utilizando agua y materiales poco habituales como acero corten, mármol y cobre, se creó un mundo propio dentro del concepto general. DORNBRACHT LAUNCHES CONFERENCIA ARQUITECTURA RITUAL EN EL BAÑO IN MADRID From 19 to 23 November 2007, Dornbracht España hosted a conference on Ritual Architecture and also presented this concept, using some of its own products and design ideas. The presentation took place as part of an exhibition held at the Architectural Association in Madrid. Along with the first ritual architecture for the MEM range of fittings, other highlights were also on show, such as the BALANCE MODULES, which are architectural modules that create the impression of natural running water in the bathroom. The event, to which the Association had invited Spanish Architects and Interior Designers, was inaugurated by Kurt Reinhardt. The physicist, design historian and philosopher, who is currently working for the German Federation of Architects, Artists and Builders, began by giving a presentation on ritual architecture, thereby preparing visitors for the exhibition. The aim of the event was not only to present the Dornbracht brand and its multifaceted involvement in ritual architecture, but also to inspire and encourage visitors to develop their own bathroom projects. DORNBRACHT PROMUOVE LA CONFERENCIA ARQUITECTURA RITUAL EN EL BAÑO A MADRID Dal 19 al 23 novembre 2007, Dornbracht España ha organizzato una conferenza sul tema dell architettura rituale Exhibition view Dornbracht ISH 2007 trade fair stand, Frankfurt/Main Photography Uwe Spoering e l ha presentata anche sulla scorta dei propri prodotti e delle proprie idee concettuali. La presentazione ha avuto luogo nell ambito di una mostra presso l associazione degli architetti di Madrid. Con l occasione sono state esposte non solo la prima architettura rituale per la serie di rubinetterie MEM, ma anche altre punte di diamante, quali ad esempio i BALANCE MODULES moduli architettonici che mettono in scena il flusso naturale dell acqua in bagno. L allestimento è stato inaugurato da Kurt Reinhardt e l associazione vi ha invitato architetti spagnoli d esterni e d interni. Il fisico, storico del design e filosofo, attualmente impegnato con la Werkbund Deutschland, ha tenuto un discorso di apertura sul tema dell architettura rituale, preparando così i visitatori alla mostra. Lo scopo della manifestazione non era solo presentare il marchio Dornbracht e il suo impegno eclettico in relazione all architettura rituale, ma anche offrire ai visitatori ispirazione e stimolo per il loro lavoro. DORNBRACHT INICIA EN MADRID LA CONFERENCIA ARQUITECTURA RITUAL EN EL BAÑO Del 19 al 23 de noviembre de 2007, Dornbracht España organizó una conferencia sobre el tema arquitectura ritual, que presentó utilizando también productos e ideas conceptuales propias. La presentación tuvo lugar en el transcurso de una exposición del Colegio de Arquitectos de Madrid. En ella no sólo se mostró la primera arquitectura ritual para la serie de griferías MEM, sino también otros puntos destacados como, por ejemplo, los BALANCE MODULES: Conference Ritual architecture in the bathroom, Madrid Photography Adrian Vazquez módulos arquitectónicos que presentan el agua en el cuarto de baño fluyendo de forma natural. La apertura de este acto, al que el colegio había invitado a arquitectos e interioristas españoles, corrió a cargo de Kurt Reinhardt. Este físico, historiador del diseño y filósofo, que trabaja actualmente para el Werkbund Deutschland, ofreció al comienzo una conferencia sobre el tema arquitectura ritual, preparando así a los visitantes para la exposición. El objetivo de la exposición no ha sido únicamente presentar la marca Dornbracht y su compromiso múltiple en relación con la arquitectura ritual, sino también ofrecer a los asistentes inspiración y estímulos para su propio trabajo. SELECTED DORNBRACHT WITH ART OF KITCHEN AT THE IMM COLOGNE 2008 art of kitchen signals the birth of a new highlight at this year s imm cologne. The exhibition which is incorporated into imm pure, the stage for international top design, offers a completely new form of presentation in the field of premium kitchens. The concept was born out of the notion that the kitchen is being transformed from a functional room into a living space and therefore into an integrated part of the living area. The Farm Project plays testimony to the fact that this view has already been held for some time here at Dornbracht, which is one reason why the company was chosen to present itself at the art of kitchen exhibition. Besides the MARO, LOT and ELIO ranges of kitchen fittings, the new KITCHEN ZONES were also on display, in which the idea of dividing the kitchen up into work areas, as is known from commercial kitchens, is taken and also applied to domestic kitchens. ( KITCHEN ZONES see p. 50). Another highlight was the presentation of the TARA ULTRA range, a new interpretation of the TARA CLASSIC kitchen range. The fittings designed by Sieger Design are based on the streamlined style of TARA and transfer this concept into a standalone kitchen-specific design

Integrata nella imm pure, palcoscenico del top del design internazionale, ne è nata una forma di presentazione completamente nuova per il settore cucine premium. Scaturisce dall idea che la cucina si trasforma da spazio funzionale a spazio da vivere, diventando una parte integrante della zona giorno. The Farm Project testimonia che questo pensiero in Dornbracht sussiste già da tempo ed è uno dei motivi per cui l azienda è stata scelta per presentarsi alla art of kitchen. Oltre alle rubinetterie da cucina MARO, LOT ed ELIO sono state esposte anche le nuove KITCHEN ZONES, in cui la suddivisione delle zone di lavoro, tipica delle cucine professionali, è stata applicata anche in ambito privato ( KITCHEN ZONES vedi pag. 50). Un altra punta di diamante è stata la presentazione della serie TARA ULTRA, una reinterpretazione della TARA CLASSIC per la cucina. Le rubinetterie progettate da Sieger Design hanno come punto di riferimento la lingua formale slanciata di TARA e la traspongono in un design a se stante, specifico per la cucina. SELECCIONADO DORNBRACHT EN ART OF KITCHEN EN LA IMM COLOGNE 2008 Con art of kitchen se ha creado este año un nuevo punto fuerte para la imm cologne. Integrada en la imm pure, el escenario para el diseño internacional de alto nivel, ha aparecido esta forma de presentación totalmente nueva para el sector de cocinas de lujo. Es el resultado de la idea de que la cocina pasa de ser un espacio funcional a ser en un espacio vital, convirtiéndose así en una parte de la zona de estar. The Farm Project pone de manifiesto el hecho de que esta idea ya existía en Dornbracht desde hace tiempo, motivo por el cual la empresa ha sido seleccionada para presentarse en The Farm Project skulptur projekte münster 2007 Photography NEO NOTO art of kitchen. Junto a las griferías de cocina MARO, LOT y ELIO, también se han presentado las nuevas KITCHEN ZONES, en las cuales se aplica también a las cocinas particulares la separación de las zonas de trabajo tal como se realiza en las cocinas profesionales ( KITCHEN ZONES, ver página 50). Otro punto destacado fue la presentación de la serie TARA ULTRA, una reinterpretación de TARA CLASSIC para la cocina. Las griferías diseñadas por Sieger Design se orientan al lenguaje de formas delgadas de TARA, y las aplican a un diseño individual específico para la cocina. DORNBRACHT EDGES: THE FARM PROJECT AT DESIGN MIAMI Following the successful presentations of The Farm Project at the Salone del Mobile in Milan in 2006 and the Passagen Interior design exhibition in Cologne in 2007, Dornbracht was invited to play host, with the Farm Project, to museum directors, curators and artists from all over the world during the opening days of sculpture projects muenster 07 in June. This resulted, among other things, in the company being invited to MIAMI, where the installation by Mike Meiré was very successfully presented as part of the Design Miami exhibition during Art Basel Miami Beach from 7 9 December The presentation, which took place amidst the palm groves in the centre of the Miami Design District, also marked the first time that Dornbracht had participated in Design Miami, with a total of around 10,000 visitors coming to explore it. The intricate documentation on The Farm Project, comprises 248 pages and features contributions from different authors approaching the subject from the various perspectives of architecture, design and art. Ritual as a source of archaic architecture, in which physicality and the experience of water are central. ELEMENTAL SPA. The latest interpretation of the topic Ritual Architecture in the Bathroom. For Dornbracht, ritual architecture is the result of a long-standing debate concerning cleansing and space, in which the individual stands at the centre of the architectonic design. The purely functional aspects of the bathroom are expanded around the dimension of human activities. The bathroom becomes an interface between the user and his/her rituals. After MEM, the contemplative bathroom for spiritual regeneration, and TARA LOGIC, the active bathroom, which sets the body at the centre of the rituals, ELEMENTAL SPA is the third of Dornbracht s ritual bathrooms. It s theme is the archaic and the original: As an element, water changes its environment. It can render a location unique. ELEMENTAL SPA therefore puts water in the centre of things, as the point from which everything originates. With space for personal and shared rituals for cleansing body and mind. Originality in perfection. This elementary power of change, which is inherent to water, reflects the architecture of ELEMENTAL SPA designed by Mike Meiré clear, cubic shapes as a projection screen of change, and materials which react directly or indirectly to contact with water. Thus each of the cleansing rituals leaves its own unique trace and constantly recalls the origin of everything: the source. The fitting conceived and developed by Sieger Design abandons its role as a companion to the bathroom architecture and elements surrounding it. It becomes their initiator. It seeks the interfaces to wall, floor and ceiling and thus marks the water exit points, which form the starting point for the various ritual areas. THE RITUAL AREAS ELEMENTAL SPA makes the bathroom a refuge for the soul. A place in which the cleansing power of water brings body and mind into harmony. Every ritual activity has its own zone. Together these zones create a path of archaic rituals, at the end of which, cleansed inside and out, the person rediscovers themselves. 1) Cabinet: The prelude to each visit to the ELEMENTAL SPA. Here is where you arrive. Unwind. Cast the outside world aside and prepare yourself for your rituals. 2) Facewash: Here follows the conscious cleansing of face and hands. Everyday life slips slowly into the background. The first ritual is accomplished. 3) Cascade: You approach the element and see the first traces of the water on the copper-coated wall and floor slabs. The Cascade celebrates the natural experience of clear water falling down on the body. 4) Foot washing and Body cleansing: The place in the ELEMENTAL SPA, where the body is cleansed. This can be completely or partially, perhaps sometimes only the feet. Just as you would like it to be in that particular moment. Totally at peace. Sitting or standing. This ritual calms the mind and thus helps you become aware of yourself. 5) Shower center: The shower revitalises the body. The gentle rain that falls from above generates a feeling of lightness. The water carries all that is weighing down on you away with it. 6) Bathing: The whole person can be immersed in the deep copper tank. It lets you sink into the comforting, warm water. A ritual simply made for achieving a therapeutic effect, by adding essential oils and ingredients. 7) Heated block: The warm marble block completes the total relaxation after the bath. Without a towel the body can dry and rest totally naturally and in its own time, without losing its inner warmth. 8) Wooden bench and patio: Wooden bench and patio: The places of meditation. Where mind and body are brought into harmony. 9) Spill zone: No restrictions, no instructions. Water becomes the elixir and thereby the meditative element. THE PRODUCTS Each of the six fittings in ELEMENTAL SPA has an individual name. They thereby receive a personal identity which does justice to their presence in the architecture. Special attention was given to ensuring that the sound and appearance of the name reflected not only its archaic, but also its ritual character. For the washstand there are the ITA fittings (without Corian ) and IAM (with a Corian cube). KATA and NOTA are bath fittings for wall-mounting and free-standing assembly respectively. The new material mix with Corian was used for both. For the shower there are the SATI fittings for ceiling-mounting and the SANGHA fittings for wall-mounting, both using a Corian cube. All the fittings in ELEMENTAL SPA position the water exit points of the individual rituals and thereby create the starting point for the architecture that develops around them. The clear, cubic appearance of the fittings is continued in the architecture. The water leaves a trace on the used materials, which recall the natural spring as the origin. For this reason predominantly archaic materials were chosen, whose surfaces alter during use. Corten steel, copper and olive wood. These materials complement the modern-appearing aesthetics of noble materials, such as marble, Corian or mirror glass. By consciously alternating between archaic and contemporary materials, a lively contrast is achieved. THE MATERIALS Corten steel: Corten steel distinguishes itself with a surface that is coated with a particularly thick iron oxide layer. Moistness thus gives the material a special individual, expressive patina. This simultaneously protects the steel from rusting. Hence, Corten steel is also used for highlighting effects in architecture and as a material in the artistic field. If the material is additionally

A topography of the individual cleansing rituals emerges through its use elementary and modern. Copper: Copper is a warm metal with various qualities and a particular vibrant effect. When combined with water, verdigris is formed, thus creating an optical impression all of its own. As a bathtub material, copper is furthermore said to bestow a therapeutic effect. Marble: A noble material which nevertheless conveys naturalness. Cut out of a mountain in massive blocks. Through its heaviness, marble can generate a sense of unwinding. Corian : is a convincing option, due to its material properties: A stable and water-resistant material consisting of an acrylic-bound mineral, which combines endless design possibilities with an extremely long life cycle. Olive wood: The furniture in the ELEMENTAL SPA is made from olive wood finished in a variety of shades. The slow grown hardwood distinguishes itself with particularly dense, insensitive pores. Olive wood radiates a natural warmth and has, moreover, a spiritual meaning in many cultural groups. Whilst all these materials are a homage to the archaic and to the original, ornaments may set certain counterpoints. High quality objects, which adopt the simple, linear, natural aspects of the bathroom architecture and materials, and radiate a discreet luxury. L origine dell acqua. Insieme, questi spazi formano il percorso di un rituale primitivo, al cui termine l individuo, purificato dentro e fuori, ritrova se stesso. 1) Cabinet: il punto di accesso a ELEMENTAL SPA. Si inizia da qui. Ci si rilassa, ci si libera dai lacci del mondo esterno e ci si prepara al rituale. 2) Facewash: in questa zona avviene la pulizia consapevole del viso e delle mani. Il giorno affiora lentamente sullo sfondo. Il primo rituale viene compiuto. 3) Cascade: ci si avvicina all elemento e si vedono le prime tracce lasciate dall acqua sulle superfici in rame della parete e del pavimento. Con Cascade si celebra l esperienza naturale in cui l acqua limpida incontra il corpo. 4) Foot washing and Body cleansing: il luogo di ELEMENTAL SPA dedicato alla pulizia del corpo. Completa o parziale, talvolta anche solo un pediluvio, seguendo il desiderio particolare del momento. In tutta quiete. Seduti o in piedi. Questo rituale calma lo spirito e aiuta a divenire consapevoli di se stessi. 5) Shower center: la doccia dona al corpo nuova vitalità. La delicata pioggia che cade dall alto lascia una sensazione di leggerezza. L acqua trascina via con sé ogni peso. 6) Bathing: la profonda cisterna di rame accoglie l intera persona. Ricerca le interfacce con la parete, il pavimento e il soffitto e segna così i punti d acqua da cui sgorgano i diversi spazi rituali. LE ZONE RITUALI Tutte le sei linee di rubinetteria ELEMENTAL SPA hanno un nome specifico. In questo modo acquisiscono una propria identità, che trova conferma nella loro presenza architettonica. È stato consapevolmente voluto che le sonorità e le sensazioni risvegliate dai nomi rispecchiassero un carattere arcaico e rituale. Per il lavabo abbiamo creato le linee ITA (senza Corian ) e IAM (con cubo in Corian ). Per la vasca da bagno, le rubinetterie KATA e NOTA si possono montare a parete o in modo indipendente. Entrambe le linee impiegano il nuovo materiale composito in Corian. Per la doccia è possibile scegliere tra le linee SATI, da soffitto, e SANGHA, con montaggio a parete, anche queste con cubo in Corian. Tutte le rubinetterie di ELEMENTAL SPA individuano i punti d acqua dei singoli rituali, costituendo così il punto di partenza per l architettura che si sviluppa intorno ad essi. Questa architettura riprende la limpida e squadrata sobrietà delle rubinetterie. Sui materiali impiegati l acqua lascia tracce che rimandano alla sorgente da cui tutto origina. Per questo sono stati scelti prevalentemente materiali arcaici, le cui superfici mutano attraverso l uso. Acciaio corten, rame e legno d ulivo. Questi materiali integrano la moderna estetica di materiali pregiati come il marmo, il Corian o il vetro a specchio. L alternanza di materiali primitivi e contemporanei crea un contrasto vivace. I MATERIALI Acciaio corten: l acciaio corten si distingue per la superficie ricoperta da uno strato piuttosto spesso di ossido di ferro grazie al quale l umidità regala al materiale una patina molto particolare ed espressiva. Al tempo stesso lo strato protegge l acciaio dall usura. Per tale ragione l acciaio corten trova applicazione anche come elemento decorativo nell architettura e come materiale di espressione artistica. La speciale lega in rame che si aggiunge ad alcuni dei componenti di ELEMENTAL SPA rende le tracce lasciate dall acqua ancora più evidenti. Con l uso viene a crearsi una vera e propria carta geografica, insieme primitiva e moderna, dei rituali di pulizia individuali. Rame: il rame è un metallo caldo, con diverse proprietà e una luce singolare. 16 Elemental Spa DORNBRACHT the SPIRITof WATER Elemental Spa Acero corten: el acero corten se caracteriza por una superficie que está recubierta por una capa especialmente espesa de óxido de hierro. Esto hace que la humedad confiera al material una pátina especialmente individual y expresiva. Al mismo tiempo, la capa protege al acero frente a la intemperie. Por eso, el acero corten se utiliza también para acentuar aspectos en la arquitectura y como materia en el arte. Si el material, como en algunas zonas del ELEMENTAL SPA, se provee además de una aleación de cobre especial, las huellas del agua se pueden resaltar con más fuerza todavía. A través del uso, se produce una topografía de los rituales de limpieza individuales: elemental y moderna. Cobre: el cobre es un metal cálido con diferentes propiedades y un carisma especial. En combinación con el agua, se produce una formación de cardevierte en su iniciador. Busca la confluencia con la pared, el suelo y el techo, marcando así los puntos de agua, que son el origen de las diferentes zonas de ritual. ZONAS DE RITUAL El ELEMENTAL SPA convierte el cuarto de baño en un refugio para el alma. En un lugar en el que la fuerza purificadora del agua armoniza el cuerpo y el espíritu. Cada acción ritual tiene su propia zona. Juntas, estas zonas proporcionan un camino de rituales ancestrales, al final de los cuales la persona, purificada por dentro y por fuera, se reencuentra consigo misma. Elemental Spa in a vital light. // Elemental Spa a luce viva. // El Elemental Spa con luz vital. un gioco ottico molto particolare. Usato per la vasca, offre inoltre un effetto terapeutico. Marmo: un materiale nobile che al tempo stesso comunica il suo carattere primitivo. Strappato dal ventre della montagna, con il suo peso il marmo porta con sé una sensazione di rilassamento. Corian : un prodotto che convince grazie ai materiali di cui si compone, ovvero minerali e polimeri acrilici stabili e idrorepellenti che offrono infinite possibilità di design e lunghissima durata. Legno d ulivo: i mobili di ELEMENTAL SPA sono realizzati in legno d ulivo con colorazioni diverse. Questo legno, dalla crescita particolarmente lenta, si distingue per i suoi pori molto ravvicinati e resistenti. Il legno d ulivo diffonde un calore naturale e inoltre ha un significato spirituale in molte culture. Mentre questi materiali, nel loro insieme, costituiscono un omaggio all arcaico e al primitivo, gli elementi decorativi fungono da mirato contrappunto. Oggetti preziosi che richiamano il carattere lineare, essenziale e naturale dell architettura del bagno e dei materiali e riflettono un lusso austero. El origen del agua. El ritual como fuente de una arquitectura arcaica en la que la corporalidad y la experiencia del agua son el punto central. ELEMENTAL SPA. La interpretación más reciente del tema Arquitectura ritual en el cuarto de baño. Para Dornbracht, la arquitectura ritual es el resultado de muchos años de confrontación con la limpieza y el espacio, en la que la persona se convierte en el centro del diseño arquitectónico. Los aspectos puramente funcionales del cuarto de baño se amplían con la dimensión de las acciones humanas. El baño pasa a ser la interfaz entre el usuario y sus rituales. Después del MEM, el baño contemplativo para la regeneración espiritual, y el TARA LOGIC, el baño activo que coloca el cuerpo en el centro de los rituales, el ELEMENTAL SPA es el tercer baño ritual de Dornbracht. Su tema es lo arcaico y lo original: el elemento agua cambia su entorno. Puede convertirlo en un lugar único. Por eso, en ELEMENTAL SPA el agua es el punto central del que emana todo. Con espacio para los rituales personales y en común de limpieza del cuerpo y del espíritu. Un retorno a los orígenes. Esta fuerza elemental del cambio, inherente al agua, refleja la arquitectura diseñada por Mike Meiré del ELEMENTAL SPA: formas claras y cúbicas como superficie de proyección del cambio y de los materiales que, de manera directa o indirecta, reaccionan ante el contacto con el agua. De este modo, cada ritual de limpieza deja su rastro personal, recordando siempre con ello el origen de todo: el manantial. La grifería, concebida y diseñada por Sieger Design, abandona su función de acompañante de los elementos y la arquitectura del baño que le rodea. Se con- 1) Cabinet: El punto de partida de toda visita al ELEMENTAL SPA. Aquí es donde uno llega. Desacelera. Deja lo externo y se prepara para sus rituales. 2) Facewash: Aquí tiene lugar la limpieza consciente de la cara y las manos. La rutina diaria pasa poco a poco a un segundo plano. Se completa el primer ritual. 3) Cascade: Uno se acerca al elemento y ve las primeras huellas del agua sobre las placas recubiertas de cobre de la pared y del suelo. La Cascade celebra la experiencia natural del encuentro del cuerpo con el agua cristalina. 4) Foot washing and Body cleansing: El lugar del ELEMENTAL SPA en el que el cuerpo se limpia. Total o parcialmente, quizás a veces sólo los pies. Justo como uno lo desea en cada momento especial. Con toda tranquilidad. Sentado o de pie. Este ritual relaja el espíritu y ayuda a tomar conciencia de uno mismo. 5) Shower center: La ducha revitaliza el cuerpo. La suave lluvia que cae desde arriba produce una sensación de levedad. El agua arrastra toda la gravedad. 6) Bathing: En la profunda cuba de cobre cabe la persona entera. Le permite sumergirse en la agradable agua cálida. Un ritual como hecho a propósito para conseguir un efecto terapéutico añadiendo aceites e ingredientes etéricos. 7) Heated block: Después del baño, el bloque de mármol caliente completa la profunda relajación. Sin toalla, de forma totalmente natural y en su propio tiempo, el cuerpo puede secarse y descansar sin perder su calor interior. 8) Wooden bench and patio: Lugares para la meditación. Se armonizan el espíritu y el cuerpo. 9) Spill zone: Ningún límite, ninguna instrucción. El agua se transforma en un elixir y, con ello, en un elemento de meditación. LOS PRODUCTOS Cada una de las seis griferías del ELEMENTAL SPA tiene un nombre individual. De este modo, adquieren una identidad propia que hace justicia a su presencia en la arquitectura. Se ha procurado expresamente que el sonido y la sensación de estos nombres reflejen tanto el carácter arcaico como el ritual. Para el lavabo están las griferías ITA (sin Corian ) e IAM (con cubo de Corian ). KATA y NOTA son griferías de bañera para montaje a pared o exento. En ambas se ha utilizado la nueva mezcla de materiales con Corian. Para la ducha, están SATI para instalación a plafón y SANGHA para el montaje a pared, ambas también con cubo de Corian. Each zone can also stand on its own. Each fitting can be used individually. The Lead Bathroom is a suggestion and a source for new ideas. My aim, says Mike Meiré, was to provide inspiration. It must not always be a case of architectonic customisation. The ELEMENTAL SPA experience can be staged often by very simple means. Many elements may also be implemented with standard ceramics, furniture and materials, for example. The possibilities are manifold. Natural stone can be replaced with tiles in natural colours. You can recreate the oxidising effect with copper containers. And besides Corian, the fittings also correspond very well with high-gloss porcelain, among other things. Every staging is held together by the strong identity, even the personality of the individual fittings in the product range. Each of those has an individual name. Names, where special attention was given to ensuring that they would reflect not only the archaic but also spiritual character of the ELEMENTAL SPA product range. ITA und IAM IITA and IAM are the fittings for the washstand and the foot bath. ITA is the pure chrome fitting, whereas IAM has a Corian outer casing. The cubes made from silky-matt Corian, a material based on acrylic-bound minerals, used together with chrome-plated, high quality brass, are being used for the first time in ELEMENTAL SPA. A fascinating novelty, which commits itself to the elements in the bathroom right up to the material usage. At the washstand the single-lever mixers mark the point, where you can find the water for washing your hands. In the foot washing ritual area they symbolise head-to-toe cleansing. A Highlight: ITA as a washstand fitting installed high up on the wall in the Cascade ritual area an archaic type of shower. KATA and NOTA For the bathtub there are two fittings: KATA, a bathtub single-lever mixer for wall-mounting, which is operated by a handle underneath the water exit point, and NOTA is a bathtub lever for free-standing assembly, which is operated by two valves. For a powerful, gentle gush of water, both of them have a wider mouthpiece than the washstand fittings. They consist of a Corian cube. Thus they accompany a place for relaxing and refuelling: Bathing. SANGHA and SATI In the shower two shower heads with Corian outer casings come into use: SANGHA for wall-mounting and SATI for ceiling-mounting. They spray the comforting shower of a Monsoon rain and encourage individual cleansing rituals. The nozzle field is framed with shining profiles, through which the emergent water then generates rich reflections and falls nobly and luxuriously on the person showering. Both shower heads can be operated with all types of valve, such as the Dornbracht xtool, for example. Thus SANGHA and SATI create the starting point for the shower ritual, they relax and create a sense of lightness. Entrambi sono provvisti di un imboccatura più ampia rispetto alle rubinetterie da lavabo, per un getto d acqua potente e delicato. Costituiti da un cubo in Corian, accompagnano il luogo della forza e della tranquillità: Bathing. SANGHA e SATI Per la doccia esistono due soffioni con guscio in Corian : SANGHA, da parete, e SATI, con fissaggio a soffitto. Diffondono il piacevole scroscio di una pioggia monsonica ispirando i rituali della pulizia individuale. Il gruppo ugelli è contornato da un profilo lucente, che diffonde splendidi riflessi quando il getto dell acqua scende prezioso e lussuoso sul corpo. La piedra natural se puede sustituir por baldosas de colores naturales. El efecto de la oxidación se puede inspirar con recipientes de cobres. Y, además del Corian, las griferías combinan también muy bien entre otros con la porcelana de alto brillo. Toda puesta en escena se mantiene unida por la fuerte identidad y la personalidad de cada una de las griferías del programa de productos. Cada una lleva un nombre individual. Nombres en los que se ha puesto a propósito un cuidado especial para que reflejen el carácter arcaico y al mismo tiempo espiritual del programa de productos ELEMENTAL SPA. ITA e IAM ITA e IAM son las griferías para el lavabo y el lavado de pies. ITA es una grifería puramente de cromo, mientras que IAM tiene una carcasa de Corian. SANGHA y SATI En la ducha se utilizan dos duchas de lluvia con carcasa de Corian : SANGHA con fijación a pared y SATI con fijación a plafón. Difunden la agradable ducha de una lluvia monzónica y estimulan los rituales de limpieza individuales. El campo de boquillas se enmarca en unos perfiles brillantes, a través de los cuales el agua, al salir, genera grandes reflexiones y cae de forma noble y lujosa sobre la persona que se ducha. How does an innovative design emerge from initial ideas? // Il prodotto diventa quindi ciò che genera nell uomo la presa di coscienza delle proprie azioni. We came up with the finished concept fairly quickly, says Benedikt Sauerland, taking another look at the first models of the new ritual bathroom. Sauerland is a manager at Sieger Design and was the chief designer on the ELEMENTAL SPA project. He himself is rather surprised that a prototype that the designers regarded pretty much as a space holder, designed to illustrate their basic first draft, actually looks very similar to the end product. ELEMENTAL SPA is a highly unusual project and not a form-finding task in the usual sense. The design process focussed on the following question: How can the concepts be implemented in an actual product? Sauerland is certain that people will use water much more freely within the home. As far as he is concerned, the term ritual bathroom refers to the conscious, almost cultic perception of water. The product will therefore encourage people to become more aware of their own behaviour. How do an innovative design and a new product emerge from initial ideas? Dornbracht do not provide us with a conventional brief that the client has come up with for us to follow to the letter, says Sauerland. Work on a new product is mostly preceded by workshops, meetings and discussions. The longstanding partnership between the manufacturer and designer dates right back to 1983, with both parties having worked to develop intensive collaboration. We consider the next topic on the agenda with a relatively large group of people. At this point, we discuss the topic, summarise it and refine it. A concept paper is drawn up as a result of this process which encapsulates the topic that we intend to deal with and to develop. Benedikt Sauerland talks about the presentation of the element water which has already played a role in the MEM range of fittings and in the BALANCE MODULES such as RAIN SKY and WATER FALL. Water should be slowed down; it should flow in a relaxed manner: this much was clear from the very outset. The designers refer to their first relatively complex conceptual approach as Waterspaces. As with previous projects, the project focussed upon the changing use of the bathroom. The aim of the project was to clearly illustrate the most immediate access to water possible and the hidden power and energy that lie within water. Fittings should assume a stronger sense of autonomy and cease to be just objects that are added to a well-planned bathroom right at the end. They are the very objects that provide us with water, says Benedikt Sauerland. However, at the same time they should take a back seat as far as design is concerned. It is as if you were to look for a water source and insert plugs in the ground, is how the designer explains the original idea behind ELEMENTAL SPA. In order to illustrate this concept, Sieger Design used an image of the courtyard of the Barcelona Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe, on which it marked in red points at which water came out or could come out. Delocalisation and dematerialisation both represented requirements that the project wished to satisfy. The image of the source was created. People do not need taps, they need access to water, explains Benedikt Sauerland. As a result, it should be possible to operate and use taps all at once. The operating handle is therefore ideally located directly beneath the fitting. The usual formal appearance of the tap has been abandoned. Two features characterise ELEMENTAL SPA: the actual chrome water spout, which the designers refer to as the spout, and a monolithic, very neutral body made of white Corian. Together, these features form an extremely harmonious sculptured structure. The formal realisation and the strong sense of minimalism can also be seen as an emotional moment, adds Michael Sieger. The Baroque Harkotten castle, situated between Münster and Osnabrück, has been home to Sieger Design since The company has its own flexible workshop which is housed among the arches on the ground floor. The transformation of the product from the design phase to the modelling and testing phase also represents a change of pace at Harkotten. We are able to progress very quickly from the initial drawings to the modelling stage, says designer Sauerland. The preliminary models are made using foam, to which exciting finishes can be applied. The subsequent surface is simulated using lacquers and chromium films. The water should flow from the spout as a laminar, nonswirling stream. This proved to be the greatest challenge of the project. A certain aesthetisation of the image of water was present, according to Sauerland. It was our intention for the water to flow parallel to the ground like a film for as long as possible. The designers designed the spout to have a crystalline, angular shape. It soon became clear that there needed to be space between the wall and the tap for water to be able to flow in a relaxed manner, in order to create the desired image of the water flowing from the spout. The design of the spout alone was not enough to achieve this, since the laws of physics cannot be defied as easily as that. The ballistic curve of the water has the profile of a parabola. The stream of water has a tendency to flow back in the direction of the wall and is therefore not sufficient to create the desired image of the water: the stream of water collapses relatively quickly, causing it to rotate. It soon became clear that it was not only a question of developing a plausible external form here. Anyone wishing to shape water needs to reckon with a fundamental force. The designers focussed their attention on the inner contour of the spout. Rauch, who is a modeller, produced a number of versions of the product in the workshop at Sieger Design. Here at Harkotten, like at Dornbracht, designers and engineers tested the models under realistic conditions. The water pressure and the volume of water were also taken into consideration during the tests. However, the initial prototypes had rough and unclean inner contours and did not meet the strict requirements of the manufacturer and designers. By this point, we were virtually convinced that we would have to terminate the project. In order to solve the problem, Dornbracht invested in a new production method which also incorporated internal processing. It took almost two years from commencing the project to presenting ELEMENTAL SPA for the first time at the ISH in Frankfurt. Engineers and designers underwent a lot of negotiations: Another millimetre here? was a typical sentence uttered by both engineers and designers as they tried to get a step closer to achieving the optimum performance. The production team preferred the product to have a larger radius, but we preferred a smaller one, says Sauerland. Technical issues aside, it was a matter of working alongside Dornbracht Marketing to find the right versions from the many possibilities available. Sieger Design developed a range of scenarios in which the product could be used. Subsequent developments concerning the quality of the water were also outlined as early as during the drafting phase. Considerations relating to the sustainability and quality of the water also played a role here. Whilst trade fair visitors marvel at the innovative features of the product, designers and manufacturers have long since been at work on developing their ideas further, completing products and seeking new challenges that appear impossible to solve.
