3 A Letter from Our Cathedral Rector Dear Parishioners, I finished my Rosary walk around the perimeter of the Cathedral grounds just now (Tuesday, 5:55AM)* and this time, unlike on previous walks, I was not alone. Of course, God is always with us, and therefore we are never alone. But here, I refer to alone in the purely human sense. Normally when I go on a Rosary walk it s in deliberate solitude, so that I can better hear the Lord s still, small voice and sense Mary s nearness. Today, however, I was accompanied by Children...with a capital C. Let me explain... By now, many of you know about the female stray cat who had three kittens in the rectory bushes back in July. You may also recall that, on July 25, we had a fairly heavy storm though nothing as severe as the storm a few weeks ago. Well, that night in late July, this goofy cat moved out of the bushes and into the rectory garage...with her kittens...and without our permission! Since I m a cat person I let them stay...but only in the garage! Once the kittens were of age we adopted them out to three school families. Now, the mother is, for all intents and purposes, a permanent resident. I named her Children (I ll have to explain that one another time!). The past two times I ve prayed my Rosary while walking the church grounds, this goofy cat has followed me the whole way, like a dog! Now, since she s a cat, she s a little more sporadic in her following than a more disciplined dog would be. She ll hang back about 20 yards, then when I look back, she ll come sprinting up to catch up with me. Or, she ll dart ten feet straight up a tree, check to see if I approve, and then come down again. She sniffs around shrubs and garbage cans, chirping at me about what she s found. And, she trots with her mouth open, tongue hanging out, just like a dog. When we finish the walk, she goes into the garage for her fresh water and dollar store cat food. Compared to the other rat cats (that s what I call the nasty feral cats that haunt our property), she s got it made! Why am I telling you all this? Because, as I walk and pray, I keep an eye on Children, just as God the Father keeps an eye us his children as we walk through this life. I scout ahead to see if any of the rat cats are a threat to her, and try to warn her, but she just trots around unaware until she finds herself face to face with one of these delinquents. Our Heavenly Father likewise warns us to avoid the company of those who might intend us harm or lead us astray. God the Father provides us a home a safe haven in the Catholic Church. He feeds us (the Eucharist) and provides for us (graces from the Sacraments), wishing to keep us (spiritually) healthy and safe. But he also knows we re in the world even though we re not of the world (cf. Jn 17:14). He knows that, in this life, we must leave the safe confines of home from time to time to engage the world, without letting the world corrupt or harm us. My own vigilance for this little cat Children reminded me how Our Father looks out for us. He calls out to us when we start to stray, he warns us of threats that we don t foresee, and he desires that we return safely to the home he has provided. He wants our happiness. Who d have thought that a simple prayer walk with a silly cat named Children could reveal so much about the Father s love...for his children? God s blessings my prayers! Very Rev. Fr. 8 Queridos feligreses, Una Carta de Nuestro Rector de la Catedral Terminé mi "caminada de Rosario" alrededor del perímetro de los jardines de la catedral justo ahora (martes, 5:55 AM) * y esta vez, a diferencia de en las anteriores caminadas, no estaba solo. Por supuesto, Dios está siempre con nosotros, y por lo tanto, nunca estamos solos. Pero aquí, me refiero a "solo" en el sentido puramente humano. Normalmente cuando me voy a mí caminada del Rosario es en soledad deliberada, para que pueda oír mejor la voz suave y apacible del Señor y sentir la cercanía de María. Hoy, sin embargo, fui acompañada por "Niños... con una mayúscula "N". Me explico... Para ahora, muchos de ustedes saben sobre la gata callejera que tenía tres gatitos en los "arbustos" de la casa parroquial en julio. También pueden recordar que, el 25 de julio, tuvimos una tormenta bastante fuerte -aunque nada tan grave como la tormenta hace unas semanas. Ya que soy persona del gatos" Dejé que se quedaran... pero sólo en el garaje! Una vez que los gatitos fueron "de edad" los adoptamos a tres familias de la escuela. Ahora, la "madre" es, una residente permanente. La nombré "Niños" (Voy a tener que explicar esto en otro tiempo). Las dos últimas veces que he rezado mi Rosario mientras caminando por las instalaciones de la iglesia, esta gata tonta me ha seguido todo el camino, como a un perro. Ahora, ya que ella es gata, ella es poco más esporádica en su "seguir" que un perro disciplinado sería. Ella se queda atrás unos 20 metros, cuando miro hacia atrás, viene corriendo a alcanzarme. O, ella sube diez pies arriba de un árbol, me mira para ver si "apruebo", y luego baja de nuevo. Ella huele alrededor de los arbustos y de los botes de basura, "piándome" a mí sobre lo que ha encontrado. Y, ella trota con la boca abierta, la lengua fuera, como un perro. Cuando terminamos la caminata, ella entra en el garaje por su agua fresca y comida para gatos. De la "tienda del dólar" En comparación con los otros "gatos de ratas" (eso es lo que yo llamo a los gatos salvajes asquerosos que rondan nuestra propiedad), ella la tiene hecha! Por qué estoy diciendo todo esto? Porque, mientras camino y rezo, yo vigilaré a Niños", al igual que Dios el Padre vigila a nosotros-sus hijos-al "caminar" a través de esta vida. Yo reviso el terreno para ver si alguno de los gatos de ratas son una amenaza para ella, y trato de advertirle, pero ella trota alrededor inconsciente hasta que se encuentra cara a cara con uno de estos delincuentes. Nuestro Padre Celestial nos advierte asimismo a evitar la compañía de los que tengan la sola intención de hacernos daño o llevarnos por "mal camino". Dios Padre nos ofrece un hogar,- un refugio salvo - en la Iglesia Católica. Él nos alimenta con (la Eucaristía) y provee para nosotros (gracia de los Sacramentos), con el deseo de mantenernos (espiritualmente) sanos y seguros. Pero también sabe que estamos "en el mundo", aunque "no somos del mundo" (cf. Jn 17:14). Él sabe que, en esta vida, hay que dejar los límites seguros del "hogar" de vez en cuando para participar en el mundo, sin dejar que el mundo corrupta o nos haga daño. Mi propia vigilancia por esta pequeña gata "Niños" me recuerda cómo Nuestro Padre cuida de nosotros. Él nos llama cuando empezamos a "desviarnos", nos advierte de las amenazas que no prevemos, y él desea que regresemos a salvo a la casa que nos ha proporcionado. Él quiere nuestra felicidad. Quién habría pensado que una simple oración a pie-con una gata tonta llamada "Niños" -podría revelar mucho sobre el amor del Padre... para sus hijos?
