2 SCHOOL OFFICE HOURS Office hours are 7:45 am to 4:30 pm. VISITORS ON CAMPUS For the safety and security of our students and staff, we require all visitors to check in at the Main Office and receive a Visitor s Badge. ATTENDANCE POLICY Compulsory attendance laws require that parents send their children to school daily and on time. Excessive absences, including excused absences, adversely affect students learning and grades. Any student with more than 10% absences (per days enrolled) is considered to have irregular school attendance, and will be referred to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB). Parents must call the school office at or send a note the day immediately following an absence. Absences not cleared within 24 hours may become unexcused. STUDENT ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE Students who choose to eat breakfast on campus may arrive at 7:30 am. Students enrolled in a before school class may arrive at the hour indicated by the teacher and/or YMCA staff. School ends at 2:30 PM (Regular Day)/1:22 (Minimum Day) and all students are encouraged to walk straight home or go to the round about for pick-up. If students are enrolled in the after school program, they are encouraged to go straight to the YMCA area. We encourage parents to make necessary appointments outside of school hours. SCHOOL SUPERVISION Campus supervision begins 30 minutes before school hours and ends 30 minutes after school hours. Students are not to leave campus during school hours without office approval. BIKES AND SKATEBOARDS By law, all students who choose to ride a bike to school must wear a helmet. Students may lock his/her bike in the bike area on the north side of the administration building. All skateboarders must check his/her skateboard in the skateboard room next to the PTSA room. No skateboarding is allowed on campus property. TARDY/TRUANCY POLICIES All students must be in class by 8:00 AM. Habitual and excessive tardies and/or excused/unexcused absences will be reviewed and referred to the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB). All students must report to the attendance office when tardy. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students who are tardy will be assigned a detention. HEALTH SERVICES INJURY OR ILLNESS AT SCHOOL A student who becomes ill or injured will be sent or taken to the Health Office. Students should ask for a Health Office Pass only if they feel too ill to stay in class. Office personnel will contact the student s parent/guardian if the student needs to go home or if medical attention is required. CHRONIC ILLNESS & LONG-TERM ABSENCE Parents must provide the health clerk with current written doctor s documentation, in order to excuse chronic illness or long-term absences. Special arrangements can be made for home schooling services upon a written physician s recommendation. 2

3 EXTENDED ABSENCE OTHER THAN ILLNESS Parents must apply for an Independent Study Contract in the front office for travel in excess of 5 days or more. Parents must notify the school at least 1 week prior to the student s departure. Extended absences from school may affect student s progress or grades. CAMPUS TELEPHONES Office telephones are available for emergencies only. While cell phones are allowed on campus, they must be turned off and put away. Students are responsible for his/her cell phone (see page 12 under item 11- Valuable Items ) MEDICATIONS A School District Medical and Parental Consent form is necessary for any student to receive medication while at school. This form is available in the school s Health Office. No medication will be given at school unless this form has been signed by the student s doctor and parent and is on file in the school s Health Office. Students are not permitted to carry medications of any type with them at school. School personnel will not supply aspirin or medication to a student without this form on record in the Health Office. IMMUNIZATIONS In accordance with California State Health Law, a student will not be allowed to attend school without the appropriate certification of immunization for Measles, Diphtheria, Poliomyelitis, Rubella, Mumps, Hepatitis & TDAP as required for his/her age and grade level. LIBRARY AND TECHNOLOGY Students are responsible for returning borrowed library materials in good condition, with no more wear and tear than usually results from normal use. When materials are lost or damaged, the student shall be responsible for reparation equal to the current replacement cost of the materials. When materials are damaged but still usable, an administrator shall determine a lesser charge. Report cards, awards, and privileges may be withheld until fees are paid. INTERNET RESOURCE POLICY Ocean View Hills is pleased to offer internet access to our students. However, the district does not condone or permit the use of inaccurate, abusive, profane, sexually oriented or illegal internet material. Personal use of the internet is not permitted during school hours. A web-filtering system provides nightly updates of visited sites. All students must read and submit a District Acceptable Use Policy Agreement signed by parent or guardian. Parents are urged to carefully read and discuss this policy with their child. Misuse of internet access is considered a major infraction. LOST BOOKS, EQUIPMENT & MEDIA FINES It is the responsibility of the parents or guardians of a student who loses, damages, or destroys school books, materials or equipment to pay for the replacement of those items. Report cards, awards, and privileges may be withheld until fees are paid. 3

4 HOMEWORK POLICY Homework is assigned to help students practice and study what has been taught. Homework is given to improve, reinforce and review basic skills and to encourage the development of good study habits. To assist students with their homework, parents should: 1. Provide a well-lit place to read and write, free from distractions and interruptions like TV s, radios, telephones, conversations, etc. 2. Check the student planner daily for homework assignments. 3. Supervise their child s work regularly. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Athletic uniforms are required. Gym shoes are required when participating in P.E. Shirts and shorts are available on campus for sale to students. Locks and lockers will be issued to each student. All students will dress for PE in their own PE uniform. Students without a PE uniform will be issued PE loaners. GRADING - 7 th & 8 th Grade Grade points are used to determine the grade point average and are awarded as follows: Grade Points A 4 B 3 C 2 D 1 F 0 CREDITS Grades of A, B, C, and D are each awarded one credit. REPORT CARDS AND PROGRESS REPORTS Progress reports and report cards will be issued. In addition to grades, students are given a mark for effort and citizenship. 4

5 LOSS OF PRIVILEGE (LOP) LIST - 7 th & 8 th Grade Administration will generate a LOP list every progress and report card period. The following criteria may place a student on the LOP list: Receiving 1 or more F in progress reports or report cards Receiving 2 or more D s in progress reports or report cards Receiving 2 or more U s (Unsatisfactory) in student citizenship grade Repeated referrals (2 or more) to the Principal/Assistant Principal s office during each report card period Four tardies during each report card period Cumulative 10% or higher absences during each report card period Failure to serve AP detentions Home suspension Students placed on the LOP list are not permitted to participate in school activities such as dances, and end of year activities, including the 8 th grade promotion ceremony. PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS / AR 5123(a) & BP 5123 (b) There are two types of certificates, which a student may earn by the end of the eighth grade: 1.- Promotional Certificate will be given to those students who have met the following criteria: Have earned a minimum of 21 or more semester credits by the end of the 8 th grade. Have a grade point average of 1.5 or higher in Language Arts and Math Have an attendance record of 90% and above. 2.- Attendance Certificate will be given to those students who have met the following criteria: Have earned less than 21 semester credits by the end of 8 th grade Have a grade point average below a 1.50 in Language Arts and Math Successfully completed the conditions contained in the intervention plan (Individual Student Improvement Plan) End of Year Activities / 8 th Grade Promotion Ceremony Meet the criteria for a promotional or an attendance certificate Be in attendance 90% of the time of their enrollment Be on the eligibility list As we near the end of the school year, we will be having 7 th and 8 th grade end of year (EOY) activities to reward our students. There are expectations that all students must follow in order for them to participate in these activities. If your student has 8 or more cumulative behavior reports and/or 18 or more absences, your student will not be eligible to participate in the end of year activities. In addition, students must have a cumulative 2.00 GPA. Upon review of individual cases, the site administration has the discretion to determine whether a student qualifies to participate in these activities, including the 8 th grade promotion ceremony. Our goal is to have all our students participate in these wonderful events. More information about the end of year activities will be available during the latter part of the school year. Ocean View Hills is prepared to work with you to support your child. By working together as a team, we hope to provide a successful experience for your student. 5

6 APPEALS PROCESS for End of Year Activities The appeals process will be determined by the administration on a case by case basis. Student must complete a letter of petition to administration Petition form must be approved by an administrator The appeals committee will consist of the student s teachers, counselor and administration All appeals committee members will review the petition form Petition may be denied if student does not adhere to the agreed guidelines by the appeals committee STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES COUNSELING Our school counselor work with students individually and in groups to promote educational, social and emotional, and career development. He/she will work with parents on ways to assist their child(ren) in school as well as inform parents of social service agencies available in the community. At times, counseling interns facilitate student support groups with various themes. Counselors conduct classroom presentations on school success, career exploration and college awareness. They assist teachers with conflict resolution strategies. Counseling services also include intervention, support, and outside referrals for students who are at risk. Students wishing to see a counselor can go to the front office before or after school. Students can also get permission from their teachers to see a counselor. The counselor will call a student from class at his/her earliest convenience. PSYCHOLOGISTS Psychologists are available to provide support to students. Request for services must be made through the RTI (Response to Intervention) process. SPEECH AND HEARING SPECIALISTS A Speech and Hearing Specialist works with students in small groups and collaborates with teachers. Request for services must be made through the RTI (Response to Intervention) process. ASSESSMENT CENTER The Assessment Center is responsible for assessing and monitoring standardized tests for OVH students. Personnel from the assessment center identify students for placement in appropriate instructional programs to ensure optimal student success. They also monitor student progress as they learn English. SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES Special Education programs are available for students with identified disabilities. If a student is eligible for special education services, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is developed to meet the student s needs. The IEP is reviewed annually with the parent. Response To Intervention (RTI) RTI is an intervention used to provide early and systematic assistance to students who are having difficulty academically and/or socially. RTI seeks to prevent academic failure through early intervention and progress measurement. 6

7 PARENT, TEACHER & STUDENT ASSOCIATION PTSA OVH strives to maintain an active PTSA. PTSA works with the school to enhance the education of our students. Parents, teachers and students are encouraged to join the PTSA and to participate in the meetings, activities and leadership of this valuable organization. SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL The School Site Council consists of an administrator, staff, and parent representatives who meet to discuss issues pertaining to the Single Plan for Student Achievement. If needed, special committees are formed to make advisory recommendations. SCHOOL, PARENT, & STUDENT COMPACT By recognizing our individual roles in the learning process, we can ensure the educational success of every Ocean View Hills student. PRINCIPAL Collaborates with parents and students regarding school-wide academic and behavior expectations. Provides guidelines for a safe and positive school environment. Consistently and fairly enforces district policy. Provides staff leadership and direction. TEACHER Provides a safe and secure learning environment. Enhances the dignity/self-esteem of each student. Reinforces appropriate student conduct. Establishes and enforces classroom rules consistent with school and district policies. Teaches state standards in core curriculum. Informs parents of student s academic progress. PARENT Reviews school rules and regulations with student. Collaborates with teachers and administrators in promoting appropriate student conduct. Encourages and promotes good study habits. Requests help from appropriate school personnel in correcting and identifying student concerns. Sends student to school daily (Ed. Code 48200). Encourages students to follow school rules. STUDENT Respects self, peers, and adults. Requests assistance from teachers when needed. Attends school daily and arrives on time. Follows school and classroom rules. Completes all class and homework assignments. Exhibits a positive attitude. Engages in positive interaction with peers. 8 DOLPHIN PRIDE Performance Respect Intellect Dedication Enthusiasm STANDARDS FOR GOOD BEHAVIOR Disruptive behavior interferes with the maintenance of a safe and orderly school environment. Disruptions interfere with the instructional fluidity and overall process. Students who habitually engage in disruptive behavior will be placed on the Loss of Privilege (LOP) list, and will be excluded from participation in school activities. When disruptive behavior goes beyond the scope of in-class consequences, students will be issued a disciplinary referral which will be part of his/her official school record. Referrals will be managed by site administration. The following consequences are corrective measures utilized in improving behavior and are progressive in nature. Severe or repeated violations will yield stricter reprimands and consequences Disciplinary consequences may include: Time-out in classroom/ Time-away Parent conference Detention Behavior contract Modified schedule Referred to Behavior Attendance Review Team (BART) Home Suspension Alternative Placement Expulsion from the District PROHIBITED ITEMS School is an educational institution whose primary purpose is to provide each student with the skills necessary to develop their maximum potential. Any item that detracts from this goal does not belong at school. Staff members will confiscate the prohibited items listed below and return them to students afterschool or directly to parents. The prohibited items list below is not all inclusive. ipods, MP3 players, radios, cameras, disc players, roller blades, permanent markers, explosives (firecrackers, stink bombs), controlled substances (alcohol, drugs, tobacco),weapons of any kind, eggs, live animals, games (marbles, tops, yoyos) or toys, water balloons, large sums of money, game cards, jewelry, obscene materials, make-up and hairspray. Ocean View Hills is not responsible for any of these items if lost or stolen. Please remind your child not to bring prohibited items to school. 8

9 HAZING Hazing is defined as any willful action taken or situation created which recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health of another. SEXUAL HARASSMENT Sexual harassment is defined as unwelcome verbal, visual, or physical sexual advances. Sexual harassment includes, but is not limited to, the following: 1. Verbal Harassment: Derogatory comments, jokes, slur or requests for sexual favors. 2. Visual Harassment: Derogatory/offensive pictures, posters, gestures, cartoons, graffiti and drawings. 3. Physical Harassment: Unnecessary or offensive touching/ blocking movements. Notify your teacher, administrator and/or parent immediately if you have knowledge that someone may have above prohibited items, or if you are being hazed or harassed. 9

10 UNIFORM POLICY School uniforms promote an environment of learning and help instill school pride. Use of appropriate attire enhances the educational process by emphasizing academics, achievement, and dignity. Complying with the uniform policy also allows school officials to better monitor a safe and secure school environment. The following information represents our uniform policy and guidelines: Attire cannot advertise alcohol, drugs, or tobacco in writing/ pictures that are obscene, suggestive, and offensive or depict violence. Shoes must be worn at all times. o Flip-flops or shoes with open toes or heels are not permitted. Half-shirts/crop tops/low necklines, mini-skirts; short shorts are inappropriate and not allowed. Shirts must have a collar and sleeves. Necklines must be no lower than four fingers from the collarbone. Denim pants or pants that appear denim like are not allowed. No use of articles which changes or alter the school uniform (rubber bands, bandanas, buttons, ties, suspenders ) Only white garments underneath uniform shirt. ALLOWED CLOTHING TOPS SHIRTS/BLOUSES Color: Solid White or Navy Blue SWEATERS, JACKETS, OR SWEATSHIRTS Solid Color: White, Navy Blue, Gray or Black Solid white top with a collar. Acceptable tops include polo shirts, dress shirts, and blouses. (T-shirts are not acceptable-except for affiliated shirts at approved times) Hip length maximum. Plain color, crew or V-neck, cardigan or pull over. ALLOWED CLOTHING BOTTOMS PANTS Color: Solid Navy Blue SKIRTS AND/OR SHORTS Color: Solid Navy Blue Fitted at waist, hemmed or cuffed; belt, if loops on pants; worn at waist. Shorts must be above the knee and within five fingers from knee, and worn at waist. *Non-compliance with our uniform policy and/or guidelines will result in a detention for 6 th, 7 th & 8th 10

El cumplir con la póliza del uniforme escolar también ayuda a los empleados de nuestra escuela a monitorear un ambiente más seguro en nuestro plantel. The following informtion represents our dress code and uniform guidelines : La ropa no debe de traer anuncios de alcohol, drogas, tabaco, dibujos o escritos que sean obscenos, ofensivos o que anuncien violencia. Deben de usar zapatos todo el tiempo; no se les permite usar pantuflas, sandalias, o andar en calcetines. (los zapatos de deporte (tenis) deben de usarlos bien amarrados). No se les permite usar playeras/blusas cortitas, sin cuello, mini faldas, shorts muy cortos, pues éstas prendas de vestir no son ropa apropiada para la escuela. Las camisas deben de tener cuello. Los pantalones y chamarras de mezclilla (jeans) no son prendas de vestir aceptables para la escuela. Los artículos que alteren o cambien el uniforme escolar no son permitidos (ligas, bandanas, botones, corbatas, tirantes ) Solamente se permite usar playera blanca debajo de la blusa/camisa del uniforme PRENDAS ADECUADAS BLUSAS/CAMISOLAS Color: blanco or navy blue SUÉTER, CHAMARRA, SUDADERA Color: Blanco, Azul Marino, Gris o Negro Deben de tener mangas. 12 DRESS CODE Dress Code Policy To ensure a safe campus and a positive learning environment, Ocean View Hills requires the following: 1. BACKPACKS- The dress code also applies to backpacks, notebooks, and book covers. Any articles and/or items containing graffiti will be confiscated. 2. BELTS -Belts with initials or gang symbols (as identified by the Police Department) are not permitted. Belt buckles must be permanently attached to the belt and of moderate size. Web belts are not permitted. Belts must be looped through pants without hanging down from under shirt or top. 3. HATS/SUNGLASSES- Hats, caps, visors, beanies, bandanas, hair nets, skull caps and sunglasses are not permitted. *If a hat/cap and/or sunglasses are required due to health reasons, please send an MD note to the health office. 4. JEWELRY/CHAINS -Wallet chains, large bead chains, safety pin chains, paper clip chains, dog collar type chains, or other types of chains that are considered safety issues are not permitted. Spiked clothing or jewelry is not permitted. Pierced jewelry must not create a safety issue, i.e., no hoops, safety pins, body piercing; tongue, lips, eyebrow, or nose piercing. 5. MESSAGES- Clothing, buttons or jewelry promoting alcohol, drugs, tobacco, violence, displaying unacceptable messages, displaying foul or sexually suggestive language or symbols, and any gang affiliation (as identified by the Police Department) is not permitted. Graffiti of any type is not permitted. Articles containing graffiti will be confiscated. 6. PANTS/SHORTS- Pants must not sag and must stay at the waist without the aid of a belt. Pants must be hemmed. Pants with holes, slits, frayed and/or ragged hems are not acceptable. 7. SHOES -must be worn at all times. Flip-flops or shoes with open toes or heels are not permitted. 8. SHORTS/SKIRTS/ DRESSES/SKORTS- All clothing must be of modest length (within four fingers from knee). 9. SHIRTS/BLOUSES- All tops must have sleeves and collars. Necklines must be no lower than four fingers from the collarbone. Only white garments underneath uniform shirt and all shirts must be buttoned modestly. 10. CLOTHING- must conceal all undergarments (boys and girls). No bare torsos or shoulders. NO baggy or form fitting clothing and leggings allowed. Jeans/denim or denim like pants are not permitted. 11. VALUABLE ITEMS- the school is not responsible for missing clothing, jewelry or any electronic items (including cell phones) 12. NO MAKE UP (eyes, eyelashes, cheeks, lips etc ) 13. PROHIBITED ITEMS- ipods, MP3 players, radios, cameras, disc players, roller blades, permanent markers, explosives (firecrackers, stink bombs), controlled substances (alcohol, drugs, tobacco),weapons of any kind, eggs, live animals, games ( marbles, tops, yoyos) or toys, water balloons, large sums of money, game cards, obscene materials, make-up and hairspray. Any item which distracts from the learning environment or may present a danger to students or staff. The school staff has the discretion to determine whether clothing or articles are appropriate or not. The dress code is also subject to change as needed. *Confiscated items will be returned at the end of the day. On some occasions, items will only be returned to parents. 12

13 CODIGO DE VESTIR POLIZA DE VESTIR Para garantizar la seguridad del plantel y de un ambiente positivo de enseñanza, la Escuela Intermedia de San Ysidro requiere so siguiente. 1. MOCHILAS El código de vestir también aplica a mochilas, cuadernos y libros. Cualquier artículo conteniendo grafiti será confiscado. 2. CINTOS Cintos con iniciales o símbolos de pandillas (Identificadas por el Departamento de Policías) no son permitidos. Hebillas deben de estar atadas permanentemente al cinturón y de medida moderada. Cinturones tejidos no están permitidos. El cinturón debe de estar a través de las presillas del pantalón y no quedar sobrado mas de 3 pulgadas. 3. CABELLO / UÑAS Cabello pintado de colores que distraigan, colores no naturales como rosa, verde, morado, etc. No son permitidos. Estilo de pelo no pueden ser una distracción al ambiente de aprendizaje. Las uñas acrílicas no son permitidas. 4. GORRAS/ANTEOJOS PARA EL SOL- Gorras, visores, beanies, bandanas, redes para el cabello, y anteojos para el sol no deben de usarse. 5. JOYAS/CADENAS cadenas de cartera, cadenas de grandes abalorios, cadenas de seguros, cadenas de sujete papeles, cadenas de perro y otros tipos de cadenas que puedan considerarse un peligro por motivos de seguridad no serán permitidas. Ropa o joyería con picos no es permitida. Joyería perforada al cuerpo no debe de presentar una situación de seguridad, Ej. no arracadas grandes, no broches de seguridad, joyería en lengua, nariz, labios, o cejas. 6. MENSAJES -Ropa, botones o joyería que promueva o anuncie alcohol, drogas, tabaco, violencia, mensajes inapropiados, representaciones obscenas por medio de símbolos o mensajes sexualmente sugestivos y cualquier símbolo o frase que se relacione con cualquier pandilla, (Identificadas por el Departamento de Policías) no serán permitas. Grafiti de cualquier tipo no es aceptable. Artículos con grafiti serán confiscados. 7. PANTALONES/ SHORTS -Los pantalones no deben de colgar y deben de permanecer en la cintura sin la ayuda de un cinto. Los pantalones deben de estar bastillados. Pantalones con rendijas y deshilachados y con vastillas andrajosas no son aceptables. 8. ZAPATOS deben de usarse en todo momento. Sandalias o zapatos con dedos descubiertos o con tacón no son permitidos. 9. SHORTS/FALDAS/ VESTIDOS/SKORTS- La ropa debe de ser de medidas modestas (cuatro dedos de la rodilla). 10. CAMISAS/BLUSAS. Todas las camisas deben de tener mangas y cuello. Declines no deben de estar más de cuatro dedos del cuello. Solamente se permite usar playera blanca debajo de la blusa/camisa del uniforme. Blusas/ camisas deben ser abrochadas apropiadamente. 11. ROPA- debe de cubrir toda la ropa interior (hombres y mujeres). No torsos u hombros al descubierto. No ropa demasiado suelta o ropa ajustada al cuerpo y medias no será permitida. Las sudaderas, suéteres, chaquetas, abrigos no se pueden usar para cubrir ropa inapropiada. Ropa de mezclilla no está permitida. 12. OBJETOS DE VALOR La escuela no se hace responsable de ropa, joyería, o artículos electrónicos Favor de leer la sección de artículos prohibidos. 13. USO DE MAQUILLAJE NO ESTA PERMITIDO: (ojos, mejillas, labios, pestañas, etc...) 14. ARTÍCULOS PROHIBIDOS- I Pods, MP3 s, teléfonos celulares, radios, cámaras, tocadoras de disco compacto, bicicletas, patinetas, patines, plumones de tinta permanente, explosivos (cuetes, bombas apestosas), substancias controladas (alcohol, drogas, tabaco), ningún tipo de arma, blanquillos, animales, juegos, juguetes (canicas, trompos, yoyos) globos, globos llenos de agua, beepers o pager, mucho dinero, baraja, joyería, material obsceno, maquillaje y aerosoles. Ningún artículo que pueda ocasionar una distracción al ambiente de aprendizaje o presente un peligro a la seguridad de estudiantes o personal. *Confiscated items will be returned at the end of the day. DRUGS: Drugs can harm your judgment, balance, memory and even threaten your sanity. TOBACCO: Tobacco such as cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, and chewing tobacco, is addictive and nicotine is the drug in tobacco that causes addiction. Harassment is unwanted and unwelcome behavior from another student or adult which makes an individual feel bad or uncomfortable. When the action or comment is sexual in nature, it is sexual harassment. Harassing Behavior Includes: Vulgar Writings, notes, posters, symbols Inappropriate actions such as verbal comments, gestures, touches that are deliberate and unwelcome Any forced action such as pulling clothes down or blocking or cornering someone in a sexual way Negative comments or behavior based on gender What is Hazing? Hazing is defined as any willful action taken or situation created which recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health of another.
