Para unas estructuras incluimos FORMA + USO juntos LA VOZ PASIVA (IT IS FINISHED; IT WAS FINISHED...) Examina este ejemplo: They built this house in activo (This house = objeto) This house was built in pasivo (This house = sujeto) 'Was built' es pasivo. FORMA Es siempre sujeto + verbo to be en el tiempo adecuado+ participio pasado (-ed; 3 ra forma del verbo irregular) Am/is/are Was/were + -ed (verbos regulares)/ participio pasado =3 ra forma (verbos irregulares) Has/have been Will be Can/must/should be Ejemplos: (+) positivo; (-) negativo y (?) preguntas ; sólo hay ejemplos de/en cada persona no hay tablas enteras para todas las personas, es necesario saber todos los tiempos indicados y saber el verbo to be en los diferentes tiempos (explicados en los diferentes cápitulos). PRESENTE (+) German is spoken here. (-) Rice isn t grown in the Czech Republic. (?) Are cameras made in this factory? PASADO (+) My wallet was stolen. (-) It wasn t finished on time. (?) How was the car damaged?
PRESENTE PERFECTO (+) She s been robbed. (-) They haven t been injured. (?) Has the letter been translated? WILL (+) It will be built in two months. (-) They won t be surprised. (?) Will they be invited? VERBO MODAL (+) It can/should/must be done. (-) It can t/shouldn t/mustn t be done. (?) How can/should/must it be done? Shakespeare wrote comedies, histories, and tragedies. (Estamos más interesados en Shakespeare.) Usa un verbo activo para decir qué hace el sujeto: My grandfather was a builder. He built this house in It's a big company. It employs two hundred people. Usa un verbo pasivo para decir qué hace el sujeto: This house is quite old. It was built in Two hundred people are employed by the company. Con la voz pasiva, muchas veces quién o qué causa la acción es desconocido o es de poca importancia: A lot of money was stolen in the robbery. (alguien lo robó pero no se sabe quien) Is this room cleaned every day? (Does somebody clean it? quien no es importante) Para decir quién o qué es responsable de la acción, usamos by...: This house was built by my grandfather. Two hundred people are employed by the company. La voz pasiva es: be (is/was/have been etc.) + the past participle (done/cleaned/seen etc.): (be) done (be) cleaned (be) seen (be) damaged (be) built etc. EL VERBO + -ING O TO... (LIKE / WOULD LIKE ETC.) like (gustar) love (encantar) hate (odiar) can't bear (no soportar) enjoy (disfrutar) dislike (no gustar) mind (importar) can't stand (no aguantar) Todos estos verbos y expresiones significan 'like' (gustar) o 'not like' (no gustar).
Why do you dislike living here? I don't like people shouting at me. (= I don't like being shouted at.) Después de love, hate y can't bear, también se puede usar to.... Por lo tanto se puede decir: I love meeting people. o I love to meet people. She can't bear being alone. o She can't bear to be alone. Sin embargo, después de enjoy / dislike / mind / can't stand, sólo se puede usar -ing (no 'to... '): I enjoy being alone. (no 'I enjoy to be') Tom doesn't mind working at night. (no 'mind to work') Would like / would love / would hate / would prefer normalmente son seguidos por to... (infinitivo): I would like to be rich. Would you like to come to dinner on Friday? I'd love (= would love) to be able to travel round the world. Would you prefer to have dinner now or later? Compara I like y I would like: I like playing / to play tennis. (= I enjoy it in general) I would like to play tennis today. (= I want to play today) Ojo; would mind es seguido por -ing (no to...): Would you mind closing the door, please? También se puede decir 'I would like to have done something' (= Ahora me arrepiento que no hiciera o no pudiera hacer algo): It's a pity we didn't see Val when we were in London. I would like to have seen her again. We'd like to have gone on holiday but we didn't have enough money. Se puede emplear la misma estructura después de would love / would hate / would prefer: Poor old Tom! I would hate to have been in his position. I'd love to have gone to the party but it was impossible PREGUNTAS Se detallan las formas de preguntas (formas interrogativas) en capítulos individuales que tratan los tiempos gramaticales (capítulos 01-04); por lo tanto, consúltalos si deseas ver tablas detalladas. I can --- can I? 3
the house was --- was the house? Para preguntas en presente simple, usamos do/does: you live --- do you live? Do you live here? the film begins --- does the film begin? What time does the show begin? Para preguntas en pasado simple, usamos did: you sold --- did you sell? the accident happened --- did the accident happen? Did you sell your car? How did the accident happen? Pero (!!!): no se usa do/does/did en preguntas si el sujeto de la frase es who/what/which/how many. John killed somebody. John killed somebody. Who did John kill? Who killed somebody? Uso típico; who/what/how many es el sujeto: Who won? (pasado simple) What happened? Who will come next? Who/What/Which/Where...?: Who do you want to speak to? What was the weather like yesterday? Which job has lane applied for? Where do you come from? Preguntas negativas (isn't it...? / didn't you...?) Usamos preguntas negativas sobre todo para demostrar sorpresa: Didn't you hear the bell? I rang it four times. o cuando esperamos que la otra persona esté de acuerdo con nosotros: 'Haven't we met somewhere before?' 'Yes, I think we have.' Isn't it a beautiful day! (= It's a beautiful day, isn't it?) 6.4. VERBO + -ING (ENJOY DOING / STOP DOING ETC.) Vamos a ver algunos ejemplos: I enjoy dancing. (no 'I enjoy to dance') Would you mind closing the door? (no 'mind to close') ran suggested going to the cinema. (no 'suggested to go') Después de enjoy, mind y suggest, usa -ing (no to...). There was silence. I'll do the shopping when I've finished cleaning the flat. He tried to avoid answering my question. I don't fancy going out this evening. Have you ever considered going to live in another country? 4
6.5. VERBO + TO... (DECIDE TO DO I FORGET TO DO ETC.) offer decide hope deserve attempt promise agree plan learn afford manager threaten refuse arrange forget fail Si otro verbo sigue estos verbos, la estructura suele ser verbo + to... (infinitivo): It was late, so we decided to take a taxi home. Simon was in a difficult situation, so I agreed to lend him some money. How old were you when you learnt to drive? (or 'learnt how to drive') I waved to Karen but failed to attract her attention. Ojo; estos ejemplos con el negativo not to...: We decided not to go out because of the weather. I promised not to be late. Por ejemplo, enjoy/think/suggest: I enjoy dancing. (no 'enjoy to dance') Ian suggested going to the cinema. (no 'suggested to go') Are you thinking of buying a car? (no 'thinking to buy' ) Para verbo + -ing,. Para verbo + preposición + -ing Detrás de los siguientes verbos se puede colocar un question word (what/whether/how etc.) + to...: ask decide know remember forget explain learn understand wonder We asked how to get to the station. Have you decided where to go for your holidays? I don't know whether to apply for the job or not. Do you understand what to do? 6.6. VERB + OBJECT + TO... (I WANT (YOU) TO DO ETC.) want (querer) ask (pedir/preguntar) help (ayudar) would like (gustaría) would prefer (preferiría) expect (esperar) beg (rogar) would love (encantaría) would hate (detestaría) Detrás de estos verbos usamos to... (infinitivo). La estructura puede ser: verbo + to... o verbo + objeto + to... We expected to be late. We expected Tom to be late. Would you like to go now? Would you like me to go now? He doesn't want to know. He doesn't want anybody to know. Cuidado con want. No se dice 'want that...': Do you want me to come with you? (no 'Do you want that I come') Con help se puede usar el infinitivo con o sin to. Se puede decir: Can you help me to move this table? o Can you help me move this table? Tell (decir) remind (recordar) force (obligar) enable (permitir) teach (enseñar) order (mandar) warn (avisar) invite (invitar) persuade (persuadir) get (= persuadir, 5
organizar) Estos verbos tienen la siguiente estructura: verbo + objeto + to...: Can you remind me to phone Ann tomorrow? Who taught you to drive? I didn't move the piano by myself. I got somebody to help me. Jim said the switch was dangerous and warned me not to touch it. 6
