2 Page Two April 19, 2015 Pastor s Column I solemnly assure you, the one who hears my word and has faith in him who sent me possesses eternal life. (John 5:24) The joy of the Easter season is seen in many ways. Two weeks ago we welcomed twenty-two new Catholics into our community of faith through Baptism and through Profession of Faith. External signs such as the Baptismal Font and the Easter Candle remind us of the glory that comes to us through the Lord s Resurrection. The hymns reflect our faith in Jesus Christ who is the Light of the World. The white vestments and festive decorations remind us of the new life in Christ through baptism that we celebrate during these sacred days. The joy of the entire Easter season is also celebrated in the other two Rites of Christian Initiation Confirmation and Eucharist. Yesterday Bishop Walsh confirmed over one hundred parishioners with the seal of the Holy Spirit. They have been preparing for two years in study, prayer, and service to others to receive the power of Christ in Confirmation. They have now completed their Sacraments of Initiation, and are now empowered to do as Christ commanded to serve and to love in His name. Then in May we welcome to the table of the Lord over two hundred of our second graders in our school and faith formation ministries to the Eucharist. For two years they too have been praying and reflecting on the mystery of the Body and Blood of Christ. It may seem unlikely that an eight year old is capable of grasping the complexities of Eucharistic theology. Yet that is not the requirement, but rather that they understand that in this Sacrament Jesus comes to strengthen them with the food of eternal life. The material food that nourishes us for human survival becomes the spiritual food that leads us to salvation. Let us rejoice with these brothers and sisters in the Lord as we welcome them into a deeper experience of Catholic faith and of belonging to St. Joseph Parish. - Fr. 3 Page Three April 19, 2015 Third Sunday of Easter MEMORIES Two years ago, following the death of my youngest sister at the age of 37, I felt the need to be surrounded with reminders of her life and accomplishments. Her final months spent battling an aggressive form of multiple sclerosis were months when her body simply wasted away. After her death I felt a strong need to place photos in my office cubicle and in my home photos showing my sister in her earlier years as a vibrant, healthy, and sparkling young woman. About a year after my sister s death, I was visiting another sister and noticed that she had only two photos of our late sister in her home. One photo had been taken years earlier and showed our sister as a vital young woman. The other was taken a few months before her death. In that photo, she was in her wheelchair, pale, thin, and feeble. My sister told me that she always wanted to be reminded of the health and the sickness and death, since these were the realities that made our late sister who she really was. This was a moment of great insight for me. Now when I remember my sister, I try to remember her from images of her strong years, as well as images of her final months and dying days. The totality of these images makes up who my sister was. REMEMBERING DURING THE EASTER SEASON The Easter season gives us many opportunities to remember the totality of what God has done for us. Today, two weeks after Easter, the scripture writers urge us to remember the whole event of the paschal mystery Christ s passion, death, and resurrection. This is important because every one of us who is baptized has a share in that mystery. We are constantly called to die to sin and rise to renewed life in Christ Jesus. Procession will begin in Kraemer Park and walk to St. Joseph Church to arrive for the 12:15PM Mass. EUCHARISTIC MINISTRY Prayerfully consider Eucharistic Ministry. Ministers are needed for weekend liturgies. Candidates for the ministry should be over 18 years old, have received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist and if married, be married in the Catholic Church. CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL Many Dioceses right here in the United States do not have enough priests and trained lay ministers to serve their parishes. These dioceses are known as home missions. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal collection will take place the weekend of April 26th to support these Dioceses by funding essential ministries, including seminary education and lay ministry training. 8 Page Eight 19 de Abril de 2015 Tercer Domingo de Pascua RECUERDOS Hace dos años, luego de la muerte de mi hermana menor a la edad de 37 años, sentí la necesidad de rodearme de recuerdos de su vida y logros. Los últimos meses que pasó luchando contra una forma agresiva de esclerosis múltiple fue un tiempo en el que su cuerpo simplemente se deterioró. Después de su muerte sentí la imperiosa necesidad de colocar fotos en el cubículo de mi oficina y en mi casa, fotos que mostraban a mi hermana en sus primeros años como una joven vibrante, saludable y brillante. Casi un año después, visité a otra hermana y me di cuenta que en su casa tenía solamente dos fotos de mi difunta hermana. Una de las fotos había sido tomada años atrás y mostraba a nuestra hermana como una joven en toda su vitalidad. La otra fue tomada pocos meses antes de su muerte. En esa foto estaba en una silla de ruedas, pálida, delgada y débil. Mi hermana me dijo que siempre quería tener presente la salud, la enfermedad y la muerte, ya que mostraban a nuestra difunta hermana como realmente era. Para mí fue un momento de gran inspiración. Cuando ahora recuerdo a mi hermana, trato de pensar en las imágenes de sus años de vitalidad, así como en las imágenes de los meses finales y sus últimos días. Todas estas imágenes constituyen lo que realmente era mi hermana. RECORDAMOS DURANTE LA TEMPORADA DE PASCUA La temporada de Pascua nos da muchas oportunidades para recordar todo lo que Dios ha hecho por nosotros. Hoy, dos semanas después de Pascua, los escritores de la Biblia nos instan a recordar todo el acontecimiento del misterio pascual: la pasión, muerte y resurrección de Cristo. Esto es importante porque cada uno de nosotros que es bautizado forma parte de ese misterio. Estamos llamados constantemente a morir en el pecado y resucitar a una vida nueva en Cristo. 9 Page Nine 19de Abril de 2015 Columna del Pastor Solemnemente le aseguro, el que que oye mi palabra y tiene la fe en él que me envió posee la vida eterna. (John 5:24) La alegría de la temporada de Pascua es vista desde muchos puntos de vista. Hace dos semanas dimos la bienvenida a veintidós nuevos católicos en nuestra comunidad de fe a través del bautismo y a través de la Profesión de la Fe. Los signos externos como la Fuente Bautismal y la Vela de Pascua nos recuerdan de la gloria que viene a nosotros a través de la Resurrección del Señor. Los himnos reflejan nuestra fe en Jesucristo que es la Luz del mundo. Las vestiduras blancas y las decoraciones festivas nos recuerdan de la nueva vida en Cristo a través del bautismo que nos divertimos durante estos días sagrados. La alegría de la temporada de Pascua entera también es celebrada en los otros dos Ritos de la Iniciación cristiana Confirmación y eucaristía. Ayer el obispo Walsh confirmó a más de cien feligresescon el sello del Espíritu Santo. Se han estado preparando durante dos años en estudio, rezo y servicio a otros para recibir el poder de Cristo en la Confirmación. Han completado ahora sus Sacramentos de la Iniciación y son autorizados ahora para hacer como Cristo ordenó para servir y amar de Su nombre. Entonces en mayo saludamos en la mesa del Señor con más de doscientos de nuestros segundos estudiantes en nuestra escuela y ministerios de formación de fe a la eucaristía. Durante dos años también han estado rezando y reflexionando sobre el misterio del Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo. Puede parecer improbable que uno de ocho años es capaz de agarrar las complejidades de la teología Eucarística. Aún esto no es el requisito, pero mejor dicho que entienden que en este Sacrament Jesús viene para reforzarlos con la comida de la vida eterna. La comida material que nos alimenta para la supervivencia humana se hace la comida espiritual que nos lleva a la salvación. Vamos a alegrarse con estos hermanos y hermanas del Señor ya que les damos la bienvenida en una experiencia más profunda de la fe católica y de la pertenencia a la Parroquia de S. Joseph.
