2 July 13, 2014 Wayne s World Sow the Word Dear Friends, When I was in the seminary, two fellow seminarians wrote a beautiful song called Sow The Word. The song, based on today s reading from the Prophet Isaiah, contains beautiful lyrics. Giving proper credit to its lyricists and composers, J. Keith Zavelli and Steven R. Janco I share the words with you here, since I have been singing them around the rectory all week! Sow the Word As the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return without watering the earth, making it yield and giving it growth to provide seed for the sower and bread for the world. So the Word came to the world. So the Word came to stretch his arms and die for the world. As he loved, so we live to sow the Word. This is the word that we have tasted with our eyes and our lips speak the love in its passing on to you. God is light. If we live our love in light, we will reap the grain for the sower and be bread for the world. We are God s lovers. Give it all away. We must be love to the hungry at our door. Open the bread. Bring the robes and rings! Lavish the hungry with the plenty we have known in the word. Such powerful words! The words in today s first reading pack the same punch. God has a great plan of grace and mercy and love. The fulfillment of that plan came in the love that the Word made Flesh, Jesus, brought into the world in his incarnation and through his paschal mystery. Jesus came to do the will of the Father, and set his heart on achieving the end for which the Father sent him. By what Jesus said and did, by the way he lived his life, by his suffering and death, He provided seed for the sower and bread for the world. Janco and Zavelli s song though, challenges each of us at least it challenges me. The second sentence of the refrain sums it up. As he loved, so we live to sow the word. Jesus loved with out counting the cost. Generously, selflessly, enthusiastically, mercifully, Jesus gave of himself. We too are called generously, selflessly, enthusiastically, and mercifully live, following his example. We can do this, according to the song I reflect on this week, by speaking love, living love in light, loving the hungry at our door, and by lavishing the hungry with the plenty we have known in the word. In order for any of this to occur, each one of us must realize that fertile ground is needed for God s plan to come to fruition. Jesus speaks of the fertile ground and the not so fertile ground in today s Gospel. So what gets in the way of the seed of God s good news falling on the fertile ground of our souls? The lack of real understanding, the absence of a true rootedness, worldly anxiety and the lure of riches all prevent the efficacy of God s seed. God desires, though that the Word bear fruit. How does this happen? Jesus tells us in the Gospel that the threefold task of hearing, understanding and acting allows God s seed to bear a great yield. And that s God s plan. One doesn t accomplish the task of hearing God s Word, understanding God s Word and acting on God s Word with great ease. It involves work, and sometimes suffering. Paul refers to the suffering in today s second reading. He tells us that the work involved in hearing, understanding and acting, is worth it. It brings with it a promise that the Word made Flesh gave - the redemption of our bodies! He speaks of the glory that will be revealed and the fact that all we do on this earth including suffering, is worth it. So with eager expectation of the promise that the Word gives, let s hear the psalmist s words, the seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest, and make our spiritual soil fertile and produce the good fruit of charity. Happy Summer! P. S. Three weeks from today we will depart on our annual pilgrimage to Lourdes. As I do each year, I invite you to send me your prayer requests for the Shrine of Our Lady. We will carry them to the Grotto and beseech Mary s intercession on your behalf. Our Mission: Rooted in Christ, touched by His love and mercy, the Saint John Berchmans community finds unity in its diversity, proclaims by Word, Sacrament, and service, that the Kingdom of God is at hand, and declares that all are welcome in this place. 2
3 THE YEAR OF THE SACRAMENTS Pope Francis Vision of Healing Parish Announcements RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION Registration forms and tuition information for our Religious Education program are available in both the rectory office and on our website at Classes take place on Saturday mornings from 9am-10:30am and will begin on Saturday, September 13th. If you have any questions about the SJB Religious Education Program please contact the rectory office. WOULD YOU LIKE TO BECOME CATHOLIC? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a journey for adults who would like to be baptized, receive first Holy Communion and be confirmed. The RCIA process can also help you complete the necessary steps to become a member of the Catholic Church if you were baptized in another Christian denomination. The SJB RCIA program meets from mid-october through April, and the sacraments are received at the Easter Vigil. The process of RCIA is a journey of faith, led by the Holy Spirit. It is a time to tell stories, ask questions, meet new friends and explore prayer and scripture. If you are interested in finding out more about the RCIA, if you know of anyone who might be a candidate for this journey, or if you are willing to help as a catechist or sponsor, please contact Rita Kattner in the rectory office. CHILDREN S LITURGY OF THE WORD VOLUNTEERS We are currently looking for volunteers to help with Children s Liturgy of the Word. Children s Liturgy of the Word occurs on the first Sunday of each month during the 9:45am Mass. If you are interested in helping, please contact the rectory office. Are You Interested in Sharing Your Faith? The Saint John Berchmans Religious Education Program is looking for a Catechist No experience is necessary, just a love of children and a love of sharing your Catholic Faith. Training and supplies will be provided. Religious Education classes meet on Saturday morning from 9:00-10:30am, beginning on September 13th. If you are interested, or would like more information, please contact Marie Jochum in the rectory office or at and Communion (JULY JUNE 2015) ONE WORD AT A TIME... BELIEVE We know that sacraments bring us in contact with Jesus and his saving mysteries, but how exactly does that happen? First, we must be clear that there is nothing automatic or mechanical about the sacraments. The sacraments, for example, are never imposed on us. In fact, the opposite is true. We can only celebrate and receive the sacraments with a free and loving act of faith. At the end of Mark s Gospel, Jesus commissions his disciples to go into the whole world and proclaim the good news. Then he adds, The one who believes and is baptized will be saved... (Mark 16:16) From the very words of Jesus, we know the absolutely close link between faith and sacraments. Believers, people who have accepted the word of Jesus Christ proclaimed in the Church as true and who rely on that word, are the ones who celebrate and receive the sacraments. Then, in faith, the gifts and the graces of the sacraments take hold and change the lives of believers. The Sacrament of Reconciliation Throughout the year, the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is available each Saturday from 4-4:45pm. Due to some scheduling conflicts during the summer months, there will be no priest available for the regularly scheduled confessions on the following dates: July 19, August 2, August 9 and August 16 Confessions are always available by appointment. Please contact the rectory office to make arrangements. Holy Mothering Meeting Tuesday, July pm ~ SJB School Chapel Purpose: To provide all mothers from the expectant to the experienced a place to reduce stress, reflect, worship, receive instruction and develop ministry gifts along with encouragement on issues that women commonly face. July s Agenda: Instruction: Assumption of Mary Project: Marian Images for your Children Pray: The Rosary Please call the parish office to register: She is the one who bring us to the Lord; she is the mother; she is the one who knows everything. Requiere trabajo y a veces sufrimiento.

6 July 13, 2014 SJB Summer Camp Newsletter Week Four: The History of the Spirit Stick The Spirit Stick has been a camp tradition for many years here at St. John Berchmans Summer Camp. The Spirit stick magically goes to the group with the most enthusiasm shown during the past week. This is a highly coveted honor. The stick itself looks like an ordinary everyday twig that has been decorated with different colors of yarn. The colors are the colors of our camp groups. On Fridays Ms. Petie is drawn to the cafeteria by the stick and its magical powers. The stick dances her around the room swaying her and the stick from group to group until it finally lands at the winning table. The champs then parade around the cafeteria boasting their stance as the most enthusiastic campers of the week. The first week honors went to the green group. Red was rewarded this past week! Enrollment The enrollment process for Saint John Berchmans School continues throughout the Summer. There are still spots available in most grades, but PreK and Kindergarten are filling up fast. Wellington in Chicago, will be hosting the next Nightfever, starting with Mass at 7:30pm and continuing through the night. Last year Nightfever was brought to Chicago for the first time. With the Eucharist exposed on the altar, priests available to talk or hear confessions, and quiet music playing, young adults stood on the streets around the Cathedral and invited people inside to simply light a candle before going on their way for the evening. Everyone is welcome to stay for as long or as short as they like, and to come and go as they please. Hearts were touched, healed, and transformed. The idea behind Nightfever is simple: Open the church, invite people in, and let Christ work. And the effect is remarkable. Nightfever is an outstanding experience of Christ s love for all involved.
