19 Direct Object Nouns & Pronouns The direct object in a sentence receives the action of the verb. Direct objects answer the question whom? or what? about the verb. Nouns used as direct objects can be replaced by pronouns. Me = me You familiar = te (os = plural) Him, it, you formal (masc) = lo (los = them) Her, it, you formal (fem) = la (las = them) Us = nos 19
20 Direct Object Nouns & Pronouns The direct object noun is placed AFTER the conjugated verb. Tú tienes el paraguas. (You have the umbrella.) The direct object pronoun is placed BEFORE the conjugated verb. Tú lo tienes. (You have it.) Use lo because the pronoun for paraguas is it - singular, masculine. I close the door. = Yo cierro la puerta. I close it. = Yo la cierro. 20
21 Direct Object Nouns & Pronouns When an infinitive verb follows the conjugated verb, the direct object pronoun can be placed: Before the conjugated verb or attached to the infinitive verb Example: Yo necesito sacar unas fotos del bosque. I need to take some pictures of the forest. Yo las necesito sacar hoy. Yo necesito sacarlas hoy. I need to take them today. 21
