1 Language Achieve Year 2, Fall, Lesson 5 Día de las Brujas Content Objectives: State relevant Halloween vocabulary and corresponding colors. Foreign Language Learning Standard: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions. Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language. Language Function: Describing people, places, and things. Evaluating. Target Form: State the Halloween noun and use the color adjective to describe the noun. Preparations and Materials:! white board markers! poster paper! poster markers! days of the week poster! worksheets! crayons! scissors! glue sticks! puppet! pencils! pens! worksheet for Halloween! Eric Carle s Oso Pardo, Oso Pardo! Make cut outs on popsicle sticks of the Halloween items to say the poem with the children Optional Comprehensible Input: A real pumpkin, stuffed animals of a bat, ghost, witch, and a plastic spider. Puppets of any of these items. Vocabulary: Calabaza anaranjada Murciélago morado Fantasma blanco Bruja gris Araña azul Revisit: La gente en la escuela Sentence strips needed:.qué ves ahi? Yo veo...

2 Gathering (10 min.- vocab practice, movement, group work) Instructions Shake each child s hand and say Buenas tardes as they walk in. Revisit La gente en la escuela. Put up the picture cards of the different people and ask pointed questions like Help the children with the sentence frame trabaja en Keep going until the children have identified all of the items. Spanish Script Hola, me llamo Maestra XYZ. Dónde trabaja el director? El director trabaja en la oficina. Dónde trabaja la secretaria? La secretaria trabaja en la oficina. La maestro trabaja en el salon. El estudiante trabaja en el salon. El padre trabaja en mi escuela. El guardia trabaja en el patio de recreo. Say, while holding up the Eric Carle, Oso Pardo, Oso Pardo book. As you put up each picture card of the nouns and their colors, have the children repeat 2-3 times. Uds. conocen este libro? Veo un feliz día de las brujas mirandome a mi. Transition (15 min.) Hands-on, interactive vocabulary practice (games, songs, rhymes): Option 1: Hand out cut out post its and have the children vote on their favorite noun by coming up and putting their post it on that item. Count how many votes each item got. Option 2: Have 7 children come up and hold a card. Say the poem with all the children as certain children are holding the cards.. Project (35 min.- 5 min. present task, 25 min. work, 5 min. clean-up) Have the children color the worksheet based on the colors of the items that you have read in the poem. Variation K-2: Color and cut out items and glue on a big piece of paper. Variation 3rd-5th: Color and cut out items and make into a book that they can read too. 5 min- clean-up Closing *Adiós Amigos Adiós, hasta luego

4 Follow up to be sent within 2 days of your class: Subject Line: Spanish Halloween Padres, In light of Halloween (Día de las Brujas), we did a variation on the classic, Brown Bear, Brown Bear book. We used Halloween items and their colors and had the children recite, repeat the poem with us. They learned familiar items in Spanish while also learning their colors. This is a great way to pique their interest in Spanish as we are offering them fun and relevant items to this week and also associating them with colors that they may or may not know. It was fun week with the children. Please have them read the poem to you and have you repeat it with them! Fantasma blanco, fantasma blanco, qué ves ahí? (White ghost, white ghost, what do you see?)
