5 STATEMENT OF CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNING BOARD MEMBER, TRUSTEE AREA 5 County Board of Education MARK E. RAMIREZ Occupation: Education and Qualifications: As a Registered Nurse and a lifelong resident of Imperial County, I know that our students physical health is strengthened by our emotional health. Imperial County schools need to take students health seriously because it directly impacts how well our students perform in the classroom. Too many students leave their high schools unprepared to continue their education, and unprepared for life, with thousands needing remedial classes in mathematics and English before they can enroll in college-transfer coursework at community college. We have allowed this educational abuse to happen by not investing enough in the physical, emotional and academic health of students in our county. Some students already are parents themselves. We should invest in our students academic readiness and their health in the same way we invest in new teachers and shiny buildings. This is why I am running for the Imperial County Board of Education. I humbly ask for your vote so we can implement the type of healthy educational change Imperial County needs. Las escuelas del Condado de Imperial necesitan tomarse en serio la salud de los alumnos porque eso tiene un impacto directo sobre cómo se desempeñan nuestros alumnos en las aulas. 6 STATEMENT OF CANDIDATE FOR MEMBER OF CITY COUNCIL CITY EL CENTRO PETE RODRIGUEZ Occupation: Education and Qualifications: Bachelor s Degree in Social Science from San Diego State University. I am employed by the County of imperial Behavioral Health as Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician. I have been employed by the County for 26 years. I am currently the Chairman of the Community Services Commission. As a member of the Commission, I have been involved in several successful projects, such as, the Adult Center, Bucklin Park Pathway, Lights at Carlos Aguilar Park, Swarthout Park improvement, MLK Pavilion and the Sidewinder Skate Park. My work experience as Chairman of the Community Services Commission has given me the skills needed to work on my goals as Councilman. My goals are; improving the quality of life for our residents, promote economic prosperity for our local business community, and to bring unity in the community of El Centro. As an Attorney and business owner I have experience dealing with complex legal matters and know what issues are important to business owners and employees. I wish to focus my efforts on making El Centro the best that it can be for all of our residents. I believe that our infrastructure and downtown should be preserved and upgraded. I believe that our public safety departments should have the resources and funding to accomplish their goal of keeping our families safe. I have enjoyed being on the board of directors for El Centro Chamber of Commerce for the last 8 years where I served as President in I have also enjoyed being Chairman of the Imperial Valley Joint Chambers for the last 2 years. I would like to become more involved in the community of El Centro by becoming a City Council member. I would like to be part of a positive team that continues to provide positive growth while maintaining moral and ethical practices as well as continue to build economic development within in the city. I would also like to focus on expanding the commerce exchange between the city of El Centro and our neighbors to the south in Mexicali. Having been raised in this city and attended local schools; I am a product of this community. With your support, I would like to focus on prioritizing the needs of our families. We can do this by collaborating with local businesses to create good-paying jobs, improving access to safe and wellmaintained parks, connecting our residents to affordable and quality health care services, and fully backing and investing in our public safety needs. Now more than ever, our city needs a qualified and dynamic leader. My professional career includes hands-on policy experience at our State's Legislature and regional planning for the largest Metropolitan Planning Organization in the country. Academically, I earned a B.A. from UCSD in Public Law & a Masters in Public Administration from SDSU. These experiences have prepared me to tackle fiscal, policy and political challenges that our city faces today.
