3 Presentación La Universidad de Chile ha sido un actor esencial del desarrollo del país en todas sus etapas, difundiendo ideas y conocimientos que han resultado fundamentales para el bienestar social y económico de todos los chilenos, junto con desarrollar investigación en todas las áreas del saber. Por su parte, la Comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica, CONICYT, en el marco de la Estrategia Nacional de Innovación, trabaja para fortalecer y desarrollar instrumentos de apoyo financiero a proyectos de investigación y desarrollo, destinados a obtener nuevos productos, procesos y servicios, sin perder de vista el estímulo a la investigación orientada a áreas prioritarias y de relevancia para el país. En este sentido, tienen gran relevancia los proyectos de I+D desarrollados por múltiples equipos de investigación de la Universidad con el apoyo del Programa FONDEF de CONICYT. Son proyectos que elaboran buena ciencia, a la vez que obtienen resultados que apuntan a la generación de innovaciones con fuerte impacto económico y social. Foreword Los proyectos FONDEF de CONICYT que integran esta publicación, buscan llevar a la economía y a la sociedad chilena productos y servicios innovadores basados en investigaciones en las que colaboran activamente las instituciones nacionales de investigación con empresas y otras entidades de la sociedad civil. Son proyectos de I+D concebidos para abordar desafíos de sectores vastos del país, no solo requerimientos específicos de una empresa, generando así impactos extendidos y perdurables. Estamos ciertos que este catálogo de resultados de proyectos servirá como un medio eficaz para la difusión de estos resultados y su transformación en innovaciones de provecho para el país, aportando a la tarea de avanzar hacia una sociedad y una economía basadas en el conocimiento, como un desafío que debe reunir a todos los sectores, sin exclusiones. Gonzalo Herrera Jiménez Director Ejecutivo de FONDEF Catálogo de PROYECTOS FONDEF The University of Chile has been an essential actor in the development of the country in all its stages, spreading ideas and knowledge that have turned out to be fundamental for the social and economic well-being of all the Chileans, along with developing research in all the areas of knowledge. As for the National Commission of Scientific and Technological Research, CONICYT, - in the framework of the National Strategy of Innovation it has worked to strengthen and to develop budgets for research and development projects, which will obtain new products, processes and services, without losing the vision of the stimulus to research in areas of priority and importance for the country. In this respect, the R&D projects developed by multiple research teams of the University with the support of the FONDEF Program of CONICYT are of great importance. These are projects that elaborate good science and while obtaining results that aim at the creation of innovations with strong economic and social impact. The FONDEF-CONICYT projects, that form part of this publication, seek to bring to the economy and the chilean society products and innovative services based on stateof-the-art scientific and technological research, in which the national institutions of research collaborate actively with companies and other entities of the society. These are R&D projects conceived to take on challenges of vast sectors of the economy and the society, and not only specific requirements of a company. That is why their results point to create widespread and lasting impacts. We are convinced that this catalogue of project results, will serve as an effective way for the diffusion of these results and their transformation in profitable innovations for our country, contributing to the task of moving towards a society and an economy based on the knowledge, as a challenge that should bring together all the sectors of the country, without any exclusions. 5 Catálogo de PROYECTOS FONDEF La Universidad de Chile a la vanguardia de la investigación en el país La Universidad de Chile es la institución académica más grande y antigua del país. Su misión es la formación de recursos humanos avanzados y la realización de actividades de investigación básica y aplicada; así como también difundir y transferir estos conocimientos generados a la comunidad en general. El objetivo de efectuar este Catálogo bilingüe, describiendo los proyectos de investigación aplicada realizados con el apoyo de FONDEF de CONICYT es, por una parte, promover la labor realizada por los académicos de la Universidad y por otro lado dar a conocer a la comunidad nacional e internacional el conocimiento adquirido y en proceso de desarrollo por la Universidad. En este catálogo, se incluyen proyectos de diversas áreas del conocimiento, incluyendo por ejemplo, estudios en minería, herramientas para mejorar la gestión en salud, desarrollo de juegos educativos, avances en producción de alimentos y estudio de la incidencia sísmica en obras civiles y habitacionales, entre otros. De este tipo de investigaciones, que involucran Universidad y Empresa, estamos generando productos patentables y posteriormente licenciables, a nivel nacional e internacional. Asimismo, generamos una asociatividad entre proyectos de la Universidad que permitan potenciar sus capacidades individuales. Desde su creación, los proyectos FONDEF han permitido realizar investigaciones más cercanas y conducentes a productos finales, útiles para la sociedad. Esperamos que este Catálogo sirva como referencia acerca de la labor que la Universidad de Chile está haciendo en este tipo de materias, de manera que quienes se interesen en estos desarrollos, puedan contactar y vincularse con los investigadores de nuestra Universidad. Its mission is the training of advanced human resources and the generation of basic and applied research, as well as the dissemination and transfer of the knowledge generated to the Chilean society in general. This bilingual catalogue describes the projects of applied research that are being carried out with the support of the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific and Technological development (FONDEF is the spanish acronym) of the National Commission for Research in Science and Technology (CONICYT is the spanish acronym). The objectives of the catalogue are to promote and transmit the work carried out by the researchers of the University of Chile and also to make available the results obtained to the national and international communities. This catalogue includes summaries of projects in different areas of knowledge that encompass, for example, mining, the design of instruments for improved health management, the generation of educational games, new approaches for food production and the impact of seismicity on public and housing buildings. The results of these research efforts, that involve the University and the business community, are generating products that can be protected by patents and subsequently can lead to licensing both nationally or internationally. Another positive result is that these projects allow us to bring together the capacities of individual research group within the University. Since its creation, FONDEF has supported projects that were designed to generate results that were beneficial for our society. We present this catalogue in the hope that it will illustrate the ways in which the research in the University of Chile is fulfilling this goal so that, those interested in these developments specific academic researchers of our University. Complex systems, evolutionary computing and applications to mining planning. Se busca determinar secuencias de extracción de mineral, que generen un alto beneficio económico sostenido en el largo plazo, mediante la utilización de modelos matemáticos más complejos y de técnicas de computación paralela, para generar soluciones de planificación y evaluación de planes más sofisticados, bajo condiciones de incertidumbre. El proyecto está generando una formulación matemática precisa del problema de Optimización que describe la búsqueda de un plan óptimo. En segundo lugar, ha generado procedimientos y algoritmos eficientes de cálculo, que permiten, con relativa facilidad, evaluar diversos escenarios y estudiar la sensibilidad de los planes de largo plazo ante parámetros de entrada, tales como los precios, costos y leyes. En tercer lugar, construirá un sistema computacional eficaz, poniendo en práctica los modelos y algoritmos. El resultado final es la instalación de un servicio de planificación basado en High Performance Computing (HPC) y computación paralela. Las soluciones obtenidas, ya sea por medio de heurísticas u otras metodologías, pueden ser mejoradas para obtener soluciones más cercanas al óptimo. Estas mejoras pueden realizarse usando modelos de Optimización. El estudio y desarrollo de nuevas técnicas y su aplicación al modelo matemático desarrollado en el ámbito de la minería, permitiría avanzar en el problema del secuenciamiento óptimo. Esto es posible gracias al uso de supercomputadores, que permiten resolver numerosas instancias locales del problema en forma paralela. Los investigadores de este proyecto han desarrollado exitosas metodologías para resolver otros sistemas complejos similares, basadas en Programación Lineal Entera, algoritmos adaptativos, algoritmos genéticos y heurísticas. Esto abre un camino científico nuevo de exploración para aproximar las soluciones óptimas, con una inversión de trabajo computacional más bajo. The aim of this projects is to determine sequences of mineral extraction able to generate a large economic benefit, sustained in the long term, through the use of: a) more complex mathematical models and b) techniques of parallel computing, to generate solutions for the planning and evaluation of more sophisticated plans, under uncertainty conditions. The project is generating an accurate mathematical formulation of the problem of Optimization that describes the search for a good plan. In a second place, it has generated procedures and efficient algorithms of calculation that allow, with relative easiness, to evaluate diverse scenarios and to study the sensibility of long term plans in the presence of input parameters such as: prices, costs and grades. In third place, it will build a computerized effective system, putting into practice the models and algorithms. The final result is the installation of a service of planning, based on High Performance Computing (HPC) and parallel calculation. The obtained solutions, either by means of heuristic or other methodologies, could be improved to attain closest to the optimal solutions. These improvements can be carried out using Optimization models. The study and development of new techniques and their application to the mathematical model developed in the mining environment would allow to advance in the problem of the optimum sequencing. This is possible, using supercomputers that allow to solve numerous local instances of the problem in a simultaneous way. The researchers of this project have developed successful methodologies to solve other similar complex systems, based on Entera Lineal Programming, adaptative, genetic and heuristic algorithms. It opens a new scientific path of exploration to approach the optimal solutions, with a lower investment of computer work. Proyecto 1 Project 1

Modeling uncertainty in geology and grades and their impact on selectivity for mining operations. En la actualidad, la evaluación de recursos y reservas mineras suele basarse en un modelamiento determinístico de las unidades geológicas del depósito y en estimaciones de las leyes obtenidas mediante interpolación espacial. Este enfoque conduce a modelos que no reflejan la variabilidad real de ley y geología en el depósito y no permite evaluar los riesgos asociados a esta variabilidad. El proyecto consistió en desarrollar metodologías para modelar la incertidumbre que existe en las leyes y en la geología durante la evaluación de los recursos y reservas de yacimientos, y evaluar el impacto de esta incertidumbre en la selectividad de la explotación minera y en los beneficios económicos esperados. Para ello, se incorporó métodos de simulación geoestadística, tanto para variables continuas (leyes) como categóricas (unidades geológicas) en un software integrado a nivel precomercial, denominado U-Mine. Las metodologías desarrolladas se han concretado en dicho software y en cursos de capacitación, productos que se dirigen a las medianas y grandes empresas mineras, así como a empresas consultoras en evaluación de reservas y a universidades latinoamericanas. El proyecto ha permitido posicionar a la Universidad de Chile como un líder a nivel internacional en innovación en minería y mejorar el estándar de la industria en la evaluación y cuantificación de la incertidumbre en sus recursos y reservas, con el consiguiente impacto positivo en la producción de metales. At the present time, the evaluation of geological resources and mining reserves is usually based on: a) a deterministic modeling of the geologic units of the source and b) estimations of the grades obtained through a spatial interpolation. This approach leads to models that do not reflect the real variability of grades and geology in the deposit and it does not allow to assess the risks associated to such variability. The project consisted on the development of methodologies for modeling: a) grades uncertainty, b) the geology during the evaluation of the resources and reserves of the ore deposit, and c) the evaluation of the impact of this uncertainty in the selectivity of the mining exploitation and in the prospective economic benefits. Then, methods of geoestatistical simulation were incorporated, for continuous variables (grades) as well as for categorical ones (geologic units), in an integrated software at precommercial level, called U- mine. The developed methodologies have been integrated into this software and in training courses, products aimed at medium and large size mining companies, as well as to consultant companies evaluating reserves and to Latin American universities. The project has allowed to position the University of Chile as a leader at international level in innovation in mining and to improve the standards of the industry in the evaluation and quantification of the uncertainty on their resources and reserves, with the subsequent positive impact in the production of metals. Aplicación a la biolixiviación bacteriana. Development of technological and scientific capabilities in mathematical modelling and simulation for the control of networks in productive processes. Application to bacterial bioleaching. En este proyecto se generaron capacidades de bioinformática, modelación matemática y simulación para servir de plataforma a proyectos biotecnológicos desde la perspectiva de la Biología de Sistemas. Esto es, integrando al estudio de fenómenos biológicos la complejidad dada por muchos componentes que interactúan en diferentes contextos de organización (moléculas, células, poblaciones) y en diferentes escalas de tiempo. La principal aplicación del proyecto, definida junto a la empresa Biosigma S.A., consideró el estudio de los mecanismos de oxidación de minerales de cobre por bacterias biolixiviantes y su capacidad de crecimiento en medios minerales de interés. El proyecto tuvo 3 ejes principales: 1) Desarrollo de capacidades informáticas y matemáticas para apoyar proyectos desde la perspectiva de la Biología de Sistemas ; 2) Construcción de modelos metabólicos para 3 bacterias biomineras, lo que incluyó experimentos de reactores a nivel experimental y piloto para tener una aproximación realista con poder predictivo; y 3) Estudio de módulos seleccionados de regulación génica de una bacteria biominera, centrándose en la oxidación de azufre, donde existen muy pocos resultados a nivel mundial, y la realización de experimentos para demostrar las hipótesis generadas in silico. Los principales resultados del proyecto son: 1) modelos predictivos del funcionamiento metabólico de bacterias biomineras que incluyen algunos módulos de regulación génica y que permiten proponer mejoras al crecimiento de dichas bacterias en un medio dado, una patente al respecto fue presentada; 2) se generó un sistema informatizado que permite integrar datos genómicos, proteómicos y metabolómicos de gran magnitud en un sistema de interacción biológica; y 3) se crearon capacidades de modelación y análisis matemático de redes biológicas y se formó un grupo humano multidisciplinario. In this project, bioinformatic, mathematical modelling and simulation capacities were generated to serve as a platform for biotechnical projects from a Systems Biology perspective, integrating to the study of biological phenomena the complexity given by many components that interact in different organization contexts (molecules, cells, populations) and in different time scales. The main application of the project, defined in collaboration with Biosigma S.A. company, considered the study of the oxidation mechanisms of copper minerals by bioleaching bacteria and their capacity to grow in mineral environments that could be interesting. The project considered three main axes: 1) development of informatical and mathematical capacities to support projects from a Systems Biology perspective; 2) Reconstruction of large metabolic models for 3 biomining bacteria, that included experiments in reactors at experimental and pilot levels, in order to obtain a realistic approach with predictive capacity; and 3) Study of selected modules of gene regulation from a biomining bacteria, focused on the oxidation of sulphur, an area with very few results worldwide, and the realization of experiments to demonstrate the hypotheses generated in silico. The main results are: 1) predictive models of the metabolic operation of 3 biomining bacteria, including some modules of gene regulation that allow to propose improvements for the growth of this bacteria in a given environment, a related patent was applied; 2) a bioinformatic platform was generated allowing the integration of genomics, proteomics and metabolomics data of large magnitude in a biological interaction system; and 3) creation of mathematical capacities for the analysis of biological networks and the establishment of a multidisciplinary team. El Ministerio de Educación, administradores educacionales y las escuelas y liceos están invirtiendo recursos en contratar servicios de Asistencia Técnica Educativa (ATE), con el propósito de apoyar sus procesos de mejoramiento. Under the context of the Law of Preferential School Subvention (2008), the market of ETA will grow exponentially due to the fact that it allows the hiring of these services to elaborate the diagnoses and to design improvement plans. Nevertheless, the information about the quality of these services is almost nonexistent. Production and transfer of a participative educational model for equal opportunities and promotion for labour productivity from a gender and generation perspective. Project 5 Proyecto 5 Equal Opportunity has become a key issue in today s governmental agenda. Labor equity, however, is still in an incipient stage in Chile. Women s presence in the labor force has grown exponentially, even though women workers do not yet conceive of themselves as subjects with rights (sexual, labor, citizenship). In fact, labor contracts have become more precarious as women integrate the labor force. The demand to generate flexible labor contracts by employers has a direct contradiction with the decent work agenda expressed by Chile s United Workers Association (C.U.T. in spanish) and the International Labour Organization (I.L.O.). A conceptual and a methodological research was conducted considering: Women and Labor, Legislature, and Equal Opportunity Plans in Chile and abroad, ductividad, la Calidad de Vida y de Gestión, y b) una Metodología de diagnóstico, pronóstico y estrategias de cambio de las condiciones laborales de las funcionarias del sector público. Para ello se realizó una investigación conceptual y metodológica sobre Mujer y Trabajo, Legislación y Planes de Igualdad de Oportunidades nacionales y extranjeros en pro de un Modelo Educativo de Intervención para la Igualdad Sustancial de Oportunidades. Amathis, educational video game. Amathis es un videojuego social, en el cual los participantes (preferentemente estudiantes de entre 13 y 16 años) deben ingresar a minijuegos, que proveen de contextos para introducir conceptos matemáticos. Mediante dinámicas colaborativas y competitivas, los estudiantes se introducen a situaciones relacionadas con funciones, transformaciones geométricas y probabilidades. Este videojuego integra diseño cognitivo y ciencias cognitivas del aprendizaje, además de investigación en el campo de los videos juegos, aplicados a la educación. La realización de este proyecto fue motivada por los bajos resultados de rendimiento de estudiantes primarios y secundarios en matemáticas que existen en Chile, la visión extendida universalmente de las matemáticas como un tema árido y extremadamente abstracto, y el hecho de que los niños en promedio ya juegan juegos de video durante una proporción de tiempo no despreciable, sin mayores beneficios educativos. Las cualidades más importantes del juego son: - Exponer de manera lúdica a los estudiantes, a contextos significativos para contenidos críticos del currículum en los temas antes mencionados, para ayudar a su posterior aprendizaje sistemático. - El uso continuo de este material permite mejorar su apreciación de temas matemáticos, muchas veces considerados como áridos, difíciles o aburridos. El aumento de motivación mejora la calidad de la educación. Características principales: Tipo de Juego MMOG, Juego Online, orientado a alta usabilidad, dirigido principalmente a niños y niñas entre 13 y 16 años, mundo virtual para explorar, mini Juegos Educativos, red social con interacciones lúdicas. Método de evaluación educativa: Se realizaron pruebas en varios colegios del país. A todos los estudiantes se les aplicó un pretest y un postest. Los resultados arrojaron que aquellos estudiantes que jugaron un minijuego y luego estuvieron en una clase referida al tópico matemático asociado al contexto del minijuego, tuvieron un aumento significativamente mayor, que aquellos que solo tuvieron la clase, pero no jugaron el minijuego. Por ejemplo, en el caso de funciones el aumento de rendimiento fue de 50,7% entre aquellos que jugaron el juego respectivo, y entre los que solo tuvieron la clase fue de tan solo 24,9%. En probabilidades, en segundo medio, el aumento fue de 64% para los que jugaron el juego, y solo 11,6% entre los que no jugaron. Proyecto 6 Project 6 Amathis is a social video game, where the players (who are mainly students between 13 and 16 years old) must participate in mini-games. These mini-games provide the proper contexts to some mathematical contents. Through collaborative and competitive dynamics the students participate in situations related to Functions, Geometric Transformations and Probability. This video game incorporates cognitive design and results from the cognitive sciences of learning in the field of video games, both applied to education. The motivation for carrying out this project was mainly the extremely poor national results in school mathematics, the widespread view that the school mathematics are topics extremely conceptual and arid, and the fact that kids are already spending significant amounts of time playing videogames without gaining much in educational terms. The main attributes of the game are: - Immersing the students in a ludic way into contexts that are significant to the critical curricular contents mentioned above, to aid in their further systematic school learning. - Through the continuous use of the materials, improve their appreciation of mathematics topics, which are often considered hard, arid or simply boring. The increase of motivation improves education quality. Main characteristics: Video game, MMOG type (Massive Multimedia On Line), oriented to high usability, aimed mainly to girls and boys between 13 and 16 years old, virtual world to be explored, educational mini-games, social network with ludic interactions. Methodology for its educational assessment: It has been tested at several schools in the country. All kids took a pre and a post-test. The results showed that those kids that played a mini-game, and then attended a lecture on the mathematics topic associated to the context presented in the mini-game had a significantly higher performance increase in that topic in comparison to the kids that only attended the class but did not play the mini-game. For instance, in the case of Functions, the performance increase of the kids that played the mini-game was of 50.7%, and for those who did not played it, it was only 24.9%. For the 10 th grade students, the increase in the topic Probability was of 64% for those who played the related mini-game, and of only 11.6% for those who did not play it.

Methodologies for evaluating copper mining plans in the long term under uncertainty in prices and ore grades. La gran minería del cobre es una actividad de mucha importancia económica para Chile, representando el 15,5% del PIB nacional. En 2008, la producción nacional de cobre fino ascendió a 5,3 millones de toneladas, equivalentes al 34,2% del total mundial. El volumen de las operaciones, el carácter no renovable del mineral y la multitud de tareas involucradas en la operación minera nos sitúan en un escenario de planificación de gran complejidad. Estos factores motivan un estudio profundo de las metodologías de planificación minera de largo plazo, que son el tema central de este proyecto. Nuestra propuesta consiste en el análisis y desarrollo de una metodología para evaluar y optimizar planes de negocio y proyectos mineros para la gran minería del cobre en que se consideren explícitamente la aleatoriedad del precio del cobre y las leyes de mineral. El principal objetivo consiste en utilizar y profundizar los recientes desarrollos del equipo de investigación en la caracterización y solución del problema combinatorial de extracción, para utilizarlo como base de un sistema integral de planificación que considere la incertidumbre de manera efectiva. Esta consideración nos entregaría estrategias robustas de inversión, lo que haría disminuir el riesgo en el proceso de planificación minera. En nuestro conocimiento, no existe en el mundo un sistema que resuelva un problema de planificación en ambientes inciertos de la envergadura y detalle exhibidas por el problema bajo estudio. El aporte de nuestra investigación consiste en la introducción a la industria minera de una serie de técnicas de alta administración recientemente adoptada en otras industrias e integrarlas en una sola metodología, lo que constituye un proyecto de frontera a nivel mundial. Las expectativas de éxito en este proyecto se fundan en la disponibilidad de un equipo de excelencia tanto académica como profesional, contando con la cooperación de destacados científicos de reconocimiento internacional en torno al tema, y con el apoyo y participación activa de CODELCO, el principal productor de cobre del mundo. Copper mining is a very relevant economic activity in Chile, representing 15.5% of its GDP. In 2008, Chilean production of copper amounted to 5.3 million tones, which means 34.2% of the world production. The uniquely large production levels, the non renewable nature of the resources and the multiplicity of tasks involved in mining and metallurgic operations result in a very complex planning situation. These factors motivate an in-depth study of the methodologies for mining planning in the long term. This is precisely the main issue of this project. Our proposal consists on the analysis and development of a methodology to evaluate and optimize business plans and mining projects on a large scale for the mining industry, where the uncertainties in copper prices and ore grades are explicitly considered. The main goal of the project consists on the use and further improvement of recent developments of the research team in modeling and solving the combinatorial problem derived from the mining planning process. This will be used as a basis for an integrated system that considers the uncertainty effectively, which would give more robust investment strategies, decreasing the risk of the mining planning process. As far as we know, there is no other implemented system -worldwide- that may solve a planning problem under uncertainty, of the scale and level of detail of the one we consider here. In short, the contribution of our research consists on introducing in the mining industry a series of techniques of high level management that have been recently adopted in other industries, integrating them in a single framework that will position our project in the technological frontier. The expected success of this project is based on the availability of a world class academic and professional team, the cooperation of outstanding international researchers, and the support and active participation of CODELCO, the largest copper company of the world. Digital spermograms assisted by Internet (ED AI): concentration, movility, vitality and spermatic DNA fragmentation. Infertility is a growing public health problem that affects around 15% of all couples worldwide. In Chile, about 6,000 couples consult medical services generating a demand of ~ 18,000 spermograms per year. Spermograms define the severity of the male factor contributing the most important information for the medical diagnosis and possible strategies for clinical treatment. Nevertheless, the reliability of spermograms in Latin America are subjected to a high degree of error, due to the lack of (i) training and support for professionals, (ii) standardization and accuracy of the tests involved in the analysis that are purely subjective, La infertilidad constituye un creciente problema de salud pública que afecta alrededor del 15% de las parejas a nivel mundial. En Chile, se estima que parejas consultan servicios médicos por año. El espermiograma permite definir la severidad del factor masculino y constituye un antecedente fundamental en el diagnóstico y determinación de las posibles estrategias de tratamiento clínico. Sin embargo, en Latinoamérica la confiabilidad de estos análisis presenta un importante grado de error, debido a la falta de (i) entrenamiento y apoyo para los profesionales, (ii) estandarización y precisión de los ensayos involucrados en el análisis que son netamente subjetivos e (iii) intercambio de información entre laboratorios. Este déficit llevó a la formulación del proyecto Espermiogramas Digitales Asistidos por Internet (ED AI) que apunta al desarrollo de un nuevo servicio tele analítico/tele médico que garantiza el más alto nivel de análisis y diagnóstico de espermiogramas para clientes, independiente de su localización geográfica. El principal enfoque de ED AI se dirige a la investigación, desarrollo y aplicación de rutinas matemáticas en el campo de análisis de imágenes y videos de microscopía dentro del Laboratorio de Procesamiento de Imágenes Científicas (SCIAN-Lab, www. scian.cl). El objetivo del proyecto fue desarrollar herramientas de apoyo a la toma de decisiones-flexibles y económicas-para mejorar la calidad y productividad de los procesos de gestión en el área de la salud en Chile, lo cual se espera extender a otros países. Para su ejecución se reunieron las capacidades de las Universidades del Bío-Bío y de Chile, dos universidades extranjeras, cuatro centros clínicos y dos empresas de software internacionales. La innovación se sustentó en el estudio de los procesos de las instituciones de salud, su modelamiento, estandarización y generación de nuevas herramientas que aprovecharon los desarrollos recientes. Como resultado científico-tecnológico de la investigación se generó en las universidades beneficiarias capacidades para analizar, modelar y optimizar procesos en el área de la salud, así como una posición de liderazgo a nivel latinoamericano. Los productos desarrollados son: una herramienta de gestión de costos basada en actividades, un simulador de centros de imagenología, un simulador de unidades de emergencia y una librería The objective of this project was to develop decision aiding tools to improve the quality and productivity of healthcare management in Chile, which will be extended to other countries. Skills from different institutions have been joined to achieve the best results. The institutions are: Universidad del Bío-Bío, Universidad de Chile, two foreign Universities, four clinical centres and two international software companies. The innovation was sustained on the modeling and standardization of the healthcare processes and the development of new tools based on recent research. As a result of this research, the universities generated capacities to analyze, model and optimize processes in the health sector, as well as a position of leadership in Latin America. The products to be developed identified by surveys applied to healthcare managers and oriented to the national and North American markets.
