1 August 2017 PROMOTORES PositivaMente GEETINGS FROM PROMOTORES TEAM As we work our way into August, the Promotores team is continuing to find culturally relevant topics that shed light on issues effecting the Hispanic and Hmong communities of Chico, Gridley and Biggs. The focus of this month will be getting our families ready for the excitement and stress of our children going back to school. Although this heat would say otherwise, summer is quickly coming to an end and as our kids say goodbye to long carefree days in the sun and hello to homework it is important for us to be aware of the anxiety this may cause for them and for ourselves. One of the biggest stressors our children may face in the upcoming year is being bullied. Bullying has become a huge epidemic that is plaguing schools across the country, therefore as parents and caregivers we need to arm ourselves with as much knowledge on this subject as possible. This year let s all as a community come together to make school a safe place for our children to learn! El objetivo de este mes, se enfoca en preparar a nuestras familias para la alegría y ansiedad que pueden sufrir nuestros hijos por el regreso a la escuela. Aunque este calor puede afectarnos significativamente, el verano está por terminar y nuestros niños pronto dirán adiós a largos días de sol y le darán la bienvenida a las tareas escolares. Debido a esto, es importante que estemos consientes de la ansiedad que esto puede causar a ellos y a nosotros. Uno de los estresores más significativos que nuestros niños pueden enfrentar al regreso a la escuela es la intimidación escolar. 2 BATTLING BULLYING 2 Cyberbullying 101 One of the most recent types of bullying that has developed is cyberbullying. This occurs when someone uses electronic devices such as a phone, tablet, or computer to bully another. This includes sending mean text messages, or messages on social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. Starting rumors using these sites, sharing embarrassing photos, videos, websites or fake profiles of individuals on these sites would also be considered a form of cyberbullying. The danger of this type of bullying specifically is the public nature of it. One embarrassing photo and suddenly the whole school is talking about you. This type of embarrassment can cause a child a huge amount of anxiety around going to school. It is important that as parents, even if we aren t familiar with all the types of social media sites our children communicate on, we are aware that this is occurring. All of us can probably remember a time in our lives when we came in contact with a bully. Maybe it was a sibling, or another kid in class, or maybe even a caregiver. Regardless of who it was, the anxiety and stress one feels when they are being bullied is universal. Bullying is normally thought of as teasing, name calling, or hitting another individual, but in today s world our children experience bullying in many different forms. Culturally speaking, Latino and Hmong children are much more vulnerable to getting singled out and bullied because of their appearance and accent if English is a second language. While we may believe our children aren t susceptible to outside influences from the media, they are very much aware of what s going on in the world. There has been a huge increase in stories of children coming home crying after being ridiculed due to their cultural heritage, specifically Upcoming Events: August 5th: National Night Out in Chico, Gridley, Oroville and Biggs August 16th: Biggs Unified School District 1st Day of School August 21st: Chico Unified School District 1st Day of School August 28th: Gridley Unified School District 1st Day of School around their legal status in the last year. As we get older we learn to embrace and celebrate our differences but for many children being different can cause unwanted attention from other classmates that can lead to teasing. Children growing up with the duality of their family s culture and American culture can feel like they don t truly belong to either, so hearing their peers point out these differences in such a negative light can cause them to feel shame, decrease their self confidence and cause anxiety in going to school. It is important to be aware of the signs that your child is being bullied, like declining grades, decreased interest in school, frequent illness, or avoidance of social situations. Even if you don t suspect your child is being bullied try to have open conversations with them about bullying, remind them that they aren t alone, and that while bullying is common it is not acceptable.

Tal vez fue un hermano, un niño de la clase, o incluso un cuidador. Independientemente de quién sea, la ansiedad y el estrés que se genera por una intimidación es universal. La intimidación puede ser a base de bromas, sobrenombres, o golpes hacia otro individuo, pero en el mundo de hoy, nuestros niños experimentan el acoso de muchas maneras diferentes. Culturalmente hablando, los niños latinos y hmong son mucho más vulnerables a ser singularizados e intimidados debido a su apariencia o hasta por su acento; por ejemplo en el caso cuando el inglés es su segundo idioma. Aunque en ocasiones es fácil pensar que nuestros niños no son susceptibles a las influencias externas de los medios de comunicación, tenemos que estar alertas acerca de lo que está pasando en el mundo. Las historias de niños que llegan a casa llorando después de haber sido ridiculizados debido a su herencia cultural han estado en aumento en los últimos años, específicamente aquellos que son acosados por su estado legal en los Estados Unidos. A medida que envejecemos aprendemos a aceptar y celebrar nuestras diferencias sociales y culturales. Sin embargo, los niños catalogados como diferentes pueden llamar una atención no deseada por parte de otros compañeros de clase, y esto puede conducir a burlas significativas. 5 GRUPOS DE APOYO Mutual Support Groups Crianza con Cariño Programa de Paternidad con Cariño Este grupo fue diseñado para ayudar a padres, abuelos y figuras paternas a desarrollar habilidades para la paternidad ya que esta ayuda a mejorar el crecimiento de los padres. Así como también cultivan y apoyan la esperanza que beneficia las relaciones familiares del hombre, la mujer y sus hijos. Duración de 12 semanas. The Nurturing Father s Program This group was designed to help parents, grandparents, and father figures develop their parenting skills as it enhances the growth and well being of men and children. Groups will cultivate and support hope that benefits the family relationships of men, women and their children. Duration of 12 weeks. Nurturing Parenting Program is designed to empower individuals and families with new knowledge, beliefs, strategies and skills to make good and healthy lifestyle choices. Short-term program of approximately 5 to 18 sessions. Participants receive a certificate at the end of the program. Join the conversation and know that you are not alone. This group meets weekly for moms having emotional challenges after the birth of a baby. Women Self-Esteem A healthy self-esteem gives us benefits for our health and our quality of life. It allows us to develop creativity, enhance personal capacities, and face the problems and difficulties of life more effectively. This group will focus on developing a support system, getting more concentration through the use of music, diet, light, relaxation exercises and achieving a good night's sleep to improve their self-esteem and personal well-being. 5
