1 Dear Parents/Guardians, I am so excited for your child to be a part of my classroom this year!! I will say though, that this year will be a little different than you or your child may be used to. I will be using a teaching model known as the flipped classroom and project based learning. Let s first start with what is a flipped classroom? In short, a flipped classroom takes the traditional model of teaching where I teach and your child goes home and does homework, and flips it! It allows for students to receive a more individualized math education where my actual face-to-face time with them is being used effectively. Because of this difference in teaching your child ends up learning the material at a much deeper level. In addition, it challenges students to learn how to take charge of their learning! It also is going to provide us much more time in class to have discussions and really dig deeper into the learning through hands on, projects, and inquiry based learning!

2 (Frequently Asked Questions) How will homework change? For homework, students will be required to watch videos created by me, where I will teach them the lesson and give examples in the same way they would receive it in class. What s awesome about the kids having their instruction via video, they can now pause, rewind, or re-watch any part of the video at any time. They can even fast forward if they learn at a quicker pace. Each video covers one concept and each video will be about 4-10 minutes in length. Students should plan on spending TWICE the amount of the time on homework as the video is in length, since they will also be completing a summary page over each video to show they ve watched the video. The videos can be accessed via 4 websites: 1. My Classroom Website: 2. Edmodo: 3. itunes U App: 4. ShowMe: 5. YouTube: Students can get the videos on a flash drive in order to watch them without internet access or they can download the videos from the itunes U app at school directly to their ios device! Because the videos are online, they can be accessed by ANY internet-capable device, such as a cell phone. Other options are available by request, such as getting the videos on DVD to watch on a TV instead of a computer. Students can also watch the videos in the Library before/after school. If you have concerns about your child having access to the videos, please let me know and I will make accommodations. When students are done watching a video, they will complete a process called a WSQ (pronounced wisk; designed by a teacher in California named Crystal Kirch), and stands for Watch-Summary-Question. When they are done watching a video they will write a summary of the concept they learned about. They can choose to complete their WSQ online by writing it on a page in their math notebooks! The summary will always be a paragraph explaining the video. After the summary, students come up with at least one question regarding the content in their notebooks to bring to class to share. The question may be a question that they do know how to answer and need explained, or it may be a question that they don t know the answer to. They could also create a question they could see on an exam based after the content.

3 There may still be a few nights where homework will look more like regular homework (mainly for test reviews)...students will be doing review worksheets and practice problems. However, now students have access to the lessons online and can re-watch any if they don t remember how to do the problems assigned in the homework. I forgot to watch my video! Students need to understand the responsibility they have. If they choose not to come to class prepared, they will not be joining the class activity that day. Instead they will watch the video on a device in class and then work on worksheets that cover the same concept as the hands on activity everyone else will be completing. What are we now doing in class?? When students come into class, we begin by discussing their WSQs in small groups of 3 or 4. Then we discuss them as a whole class. After we complete our WSQ portion of the class, students will work in small groups on activities to help them practice and develop full understanding of the math concepts. These activities are hands on, creation, project based activities that will allow them to really delve deeply into the math that we are studying. I am constantly walking around from group to group, guiding their discussion and helping them along the way. Students will be active in creating their own content, by writing word problems, recording their own short videos, finding resources online, and making engaging and interactive learning activities to share with their peers. Videos will NOT be given every night, so students will still receive some large group instruction from me. In addition, there is still time for large group and whole-class reviews if the large group needs to go back over a concept. However, most of the teaching is now focused on smaller groups of students who need help on certain concepts, leading to fully differentiated instruction and support. I will have the students keep a calendar so you can be aware of when each video is assigned and due.

4 What does the flipped classroom require of you as a parent/guardian? What s great about the flipped classroom is that it allows you, the parent/guardian, to be much more actively engaged in your child s education! I hear quite often that parents don t remember how to do some of the math anymore! Totally understandable! What s great now is that you can re-learn the material WITH your child! Here are now several very easy ways you can help your child. 1) Provide your child with a quiet place to watch the video (preferably with headphones to limit distractions). If internet access is not available at your house, provide your child with the time to come before or stay after school to watch the video in my classroom. 2) Ask your child about their summary/notes. This is by far the most difficult aspect of the WSQ! Have them read their summary to you and see if it makes sense! The summary should also teach you without you watching the video. 3) Check out the Q they wrote down and make sure it even makes sense! 4) Remind them that it s ok if they need to pause or rewind the video if the instruction feels like it s going by too quickly! 5) Watch the videos with them so you can learn along with them! 6 Estimados padres/guardianes: Estoy muy contenta que su hijo/a forme parte de mi clase este año. Aunque debo decir que este año será un poco diferente de lo que usted y su hijo/a están acostumbrados. Usaré un modelo de enseñanza conocido como salón volteado y aprendizaje basado en proyectos. Empecemos con Qué es un salón volteado? En resumen, un salón volteado toma el modelo tradicional de enseñanza en el cual yo enseño y su hijo/a va a casa y hace tarea, y lo voltea. Esto permite que los estudiantes reciban una educación matemática más individualizada en la que mi tiempo con ellos es utilizado de manera efectiva. Debido a esta diferencia, su hijo/a termina aprendiendo el material de manera mucho más profunda. Además, reta a los estudiantes a que aprendan a hacerse cargo de su aprendizaje. También nos va a permitir tener más tiempo en clase para discusiones y para ahondar en el aprendizaje utilizando manipulativos, proyectos y aprendizaje basado en investigación.

7 (Preguntas frecuentes) Cómo cambia la tarea? De tarea, a los estudiantes se les requerirá ver videos creados por mí, en los que les enseño la lección y doy ejemplos de la misma manera como si estuviera ensenándolo en el salón. Lo bueno de ver los videos, es que los estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de detener, devolver o volver a ver cualquier parte del video en cualquier momento. Hasta pueden avanzar rápido si aprenden a un ritmo más rápido. Cada video cubre un concepto, y dura de 4 a 10 minutos. Cuando terminan de ver el video y tomar de notas Cornell, deben escribir un resumen del concepto que aprendieron. Los estudiantes deben planificar pasar el DOBLE del tiempo haciendo tarea que lo que dura el video, ya que también harán un resumen de cada video para demostrar que vieron el video. Se puede tener acceso a los videos por medio de estos sitios de internet: 1. Sitio de mi salón: 2. Edmodo: 3. itunes U App: 4. ShowMe: 5. YouTube: Los estudiantes pueden colocar los videos en un dispositivo compacto flash drive para verlos aunque no tengan acceso a internet o los pueden bajar en la escuela directamente de itunes U app a sus aparatos ios. Como los videos están en internet, pueden verse en CUALQUIER aparato que tenga acceso a internet, tales como sus celulares. Hay otras opciones disponibles a petición, tales como grabar los videos en un DVD para verlos en un TV y no en la computadora. Los estudiantes también pueden ver los videos en la biblioteca antes/después de clases. Si le preocupa que su hijo/a tenga acceso a videos, por favor avíseme y yo trataré de acomodarlo. Cuando los estudiantes terminan de ver el video, deben completar un proceso llamado WSQ (diseñado por una maestra en California llamada Crystal Kirch), y que significa Ver-Resumen- Pregunta, (por sus siglas en inglés). Al terminar de ver el video deben escribir un resumen del concepto que aprendieron. Deben elegir su WSQ en internet escribiendo un resumen de una hoja en sus cuadernos de matemáticas. El resumen siempre debe ser un párrafo explicando el video. Después del resumen, los estudiantes idean por lo menos una pregunta en relación al contenido, la cual traerán a clase para compartirla.

8 La pregunta puede ser una a la cual ellos sepan la respuesta y deban explicarla o también puede ser una pregunta a la cual no sepan la respuesta. También pueden crear una pregunta que pudiera estar en un examen basado en el contenido. También habrá noches en las que la tarea luzca como las tareas normales (mayormente para repaso para exámenes) los estudiantes harán ejercicios de repaso y problemas de práctica. Sin embargo, ahora los estudiantes tienen acceso por internet a las lecciones y pueden volver a ver cualquiera que no recuerden cómo resolver los problemas asignados en la tarea. Se me olvidó ver el video! Los estudiantes deben entender la responsabilidad que tienen. Si el estudiante decide venir a clase sin estar preparado, no se unirán a la actividad de ese día. En su lugar, verá el video en un aparato en clase y luego trabajará en hojas de práctica que cubren los mismos conceptos de las actividades que los demás están haciendo. Qué estamos haciendo ahora en clase? Cuando los estudiantes llegan al salón, comenzamos por discutir sus WSQ en grupos de 3 o 4. Luego discutimos todos juntos. Después de terminar la porción de WSQ, los estudiantes trabajarán en grupos pequeños en actividades que los ayuden a practicar y desarrollar un total entendimiento de los conceptos matemáticos. Estas actividades son prácticas, actividades creativas basadas en proyectos que les permitirán explorar profundamente las matemáticas que estamos estudiando. Constantemente, yo voy de grupo en grupo, guiando sus discusiones y ayudándolos. Los estudiantes estarán activos creando su propio contenido, escribiendo problemas, grabando sus videos cortos, encontrando recursos en internet y realizando actividades interactivas para compartir con sus compañeros. Los videos NO se darán todas las noches, así que los estudiantes recibirán alguna instrucción con todo el grupo. Además, todavía queda tiempo para repasos con toda la clase si todo el grupo necesita repasar algún concepto. Sin embargo, la mayor parte de la enseñanza estará ahora enfocada en grupos pequeños de estudiantes que necesiten ayuda con ciertos conceptos, lo que conllevará a una enseñanza y apoyo completamente individualizada. Los estudiantes llevarán un calendario para que usted sepa cuándo se debe ver cada video.

9 Qué requiere de usted como padre/guardián el salón volteado? Lo grandioso del salón volteado es que le permite a usted, el padre/guardián, participar mucho más en la educación de su hijo/a. Con frecuencia escucho que los padres ya no se acuerdan cómo hacer matemáticas. Lo comprendo completamente. Lo bueno es que usted puede volver a aprender el material JUNTO con su hijo/a. Estas son algunas maneras fáciles de cómo ayudar a su hijo/a. 1) Provéale un lugar tranquilo para ver los videos (preferiblemente con audífonos para limitar las distracciones). Si no tiene acceso a internet en casa, dele tiempo a su hijo/a para venir antes o quedarse después de clase para ver el video en mi salón. 2) Pregúntele a su hijo/a por el resumen/notas. Esto es con seguridad el aspecto más difícil de WSQ. Haga que le lean el resumen y vea si tiene sentido. El resumen también le ensenará sin necesidad de ver el video. 3) Chequee la Q (pregunta) que escribieron y asegúrese que tenga sentido. 4) Recuérdele que está bien si necesita parar o devolver el video si siente que va muy rápido. 5) Vean los videos juntos para que aprendan juntos.
