The concept of the media or press as a fourth branch stems from a belief that the news media s responsibility to inform the populace is essential to the healthy functioning of the democracy. Journalism serves us well when in its fundamental role as communicator it achieves this in an impartial and objective manner. I was shaped by these principles and with these principles I have raised the flag of communication, conscious and respectful of the liberties inherently possessed by all human beings. In a free society the freedom of expression and ideas merge, allowing for continued personal advancement and the development of society as a whole. In my early years as a journalist in Paraguay, South America my country of origin, I was threatened with censure and job loss for the expression of my views. In spite of outside efforts to influence my beliefs about what authentic journalism really looked like I never succumbed to that pressure. With this same dedication, commitment and sense of engagement I address you with the desire to continue serving society from the professional perspective of one who communicates and generates public opinion. At the same time I wish to thank all of those readers, listeners, viewers and business colleagues who have shown an interest in my career. I invite you and those with whom I have more recently become acquainted to join me as I move forward with the same serious, professional and responsible practice of journalism committed to the mission of the Fourth Branch of government. I invite you to look forward with me and to share my joy in announcing the merger of Hola Augusta and Bienvenidos Press. 4 4 Bienvenidos! By Ricardo Azziz Tengo el privilegio de empezar a escribir un corto artículo mensual para su periódico Bienvenidos Press. En esta columna les trataré de presentar información sobre nuestra universidad, Georgia Regents University (GRU), y cómo ésta les impacta a ustedes, mis lectores, y a la comunidad hispana en general. También compartiré pensamientos y comentarios sobre el estado de la salud, la educación superior, la economía y el liderazgo en general. Pero primero quisiera presentarme brevemente, dejándoles saber un poco sobre este humilde escritor. Nací en Montevideo, Uruguay, de padre sirio-libanés y de madre francohispana. Mi padre fue primero Ingeniero Mecánico, el primer graduado de universidad en su familia. Mis abuelos paternos eran dueños de una tienda de ropas y calzados en un pueblo pequeño en el centro del país llamado Durazno aunque nunca ví un árbol de duraznos (melocotones) allí! Mi madre es de la capital Montevideo, hija de un juez, quien fue Presidente de la Corte Suprema del país. Mamá estudió leyes, pero nunca terminó ya que empezaron a nacer los hijos ( Yo primero!). Muchos años después se graduó con un doctorado en Antropología de la Universidad de Michigan, ya siendo profesora del tema. Cuando tuve dos años nos mudamos a la ciudad de Mayagüez en Puerto Rico, para que mi padre hiciera su maestría en Física. Luego de un par de años, habiendo completado sus estudios allí, nos fuimos a Costa Rica por un corto periodo antes de terminar en el pueblito de State College en Pennsylvania, donde estaba (y todavía está) la Universidad de Penn State. Allí mi padre completó su doctorado en Física Nuclear. Fuimos tres niños (dos varones y una mujer) en aquel entonces (años después nació otro hermano y una hermanita). Aunque mis padres nos hablaban en español, y aunque nosotros entendíamos el lenguaje bastante bien, no había quién nos hiciera hablar en esa lengua rara! Era un lenguaje que lo hablaban mis padres... pero no mis compañeros de escuela! Porque a esa edad tan temprana todos los niños quieren ser iguales que sus amiguitos. Un problema que sé muchos de los lectores con hijos han tenido. Harrisburg Community Garden By Denice Traina If you passed by 708 Bohler Avenue in the Harrisburg neighborhood prior to 2009 you would have seen nothing but a vacant lot. But with the determination and commitment of a small band of neighbors and friends it has most certainly blossomed and along with it uncovered new friendships and a sense of community. The Garden has hosted birthdays and seasonal celebrations as well as poetry readings and music. It was the final destination for the Tour of Community Gardens two years in a row and has been visited by elementary and high school students from local after school programs. The Tubman Education Center, Alternative School has adopted a bed in both 2012 and 2013 and on this year s Day of Service on January 19 over 20 folks including neighbors, friends, students from nearby Laney High School and local farmers, The Adderson s helped to spruce up the garden. The Garden has indeed been blessed by many faiths with gifts of financial support, drumming, prayer, and dance and the donation of water to sustain it. We have also been the recipient of two beautiful fig trees from our local Muslim community. Today we are planning for some aesthetic upgrades and perhaps a mural on our fence. Two new beds are in the works, one using re-purposed materials and the other demonstrates an African keyhole design. The reason the Garden thrives is because it is meeting the needs of its community. Welcoming anyone who seeks respite by sitting and enjoying the peacefulness or others who crave the feeling of diggin in the dirt or those who appreciate the Zen of pulling weeds, planting or watering we are grateful. Grateful that as neighbors we have come together on common ground appreciating the gifts that each of us has to offer our community. Join us. Luego de recibirse mi padre de doctor en Física nos mudamos a Pittsburgh. Mi padre trabajaba en Westinghouse ayudando a diseñar reactores nucleares y mi madre enseñaba Francés en un liceo local. Una ciudad con un frío penetrante y unas nevadas bárbaras durante inviernos largos. Fue entonces, cuando tuve 10 años, que volvimos al Uruguay...y tuve que aprender el Español rápidamente...en aquél entonces el país estaba en crisis política, con una proliferación de ataques guerrilleros, raptos, asesinatos, tortura, y bombardeos. Un contraste severo con la calma y seguridad de Pittsburgh! Retornamos a Mayagüez poco antes del golpe de estado que sumergió al Uruguay en unos 12 años de dura dictadura militar. Completé liceo y luego me gradué del Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM) de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, donde mis padres enseñaban. Una gran universidad (y graduados de la cual hoy día hay por lo menos tres presidentes de universidades - En 1981 completé un doctorado de Medicina de Penn State University, luego una residencia en Obstetricia y Ginecología en Georgetown University Hospital y finalmente la rama de Endocrinología Reproductiva e Infertilidad en Johns Hopkins Hospital. El entrenamiento médico es largo... pero extraordinariamente interesante! Mi primer empleo fue como profesor en la Universidad de Alabama en Birmingham (UAB), donde permanecí unos 15 años, desarrollando un fuerte programa de investigación científica estudiando el problema de las mujeres con exceso de hormonas masculinas (y quienes frecuentemente tienen ciclos menstruales irregulares, exceso de pelo en la cara y el cuerpo, y posiblemente barbas, entre otros síntomas). Para mí la investigación de lo desconocido es uno de los grandes placeres, y aún más uno de los grandes beneficios de las universidades...ayudando a definir el futuro... Luego de Birmingham, ya casado y con tres hijos, nos mudamos a Los Ángeles, donde serví, entre otras posiciones, como Director de Obstetricia y Ginecología en Cedars Sinai Medical Center, uno de los hospitales académicos más grandes de los Estados Unidos, y como Decano Asistente en la Universidad de California Los Ángeles (UCLA). Y finalmente retornando al sur, siendo nombrado presidente en el 2010 de lo que hoy día es GRU y como jefe ejecutivo (CEO) del sistema de salud de Georgia Regents (GR Health System). El primer hispano con ese cargo, y uno de los pocos (por ahora) presidentes latinos de universidad en este país. Un camino un poco largo en el cual, afortunadamente, fui expuesto a una gran variedad de lugares, gentes, pensamientos y experiencias profesionales y personales, preparándome para la labor de hoy y mañana: Esta enorme transformación que tenemos ayudando a crear una de las grandes universidades de este país...aquí en Augusta. El mes que viene les describiré un poco lo que es Georgia Regents University, y el valor e impacto enorme que tiene para nosotros los hispanos y para la comunidad de Augusta en general. El hecho que el Dr. Ricardo Azziz es el primer latino en liderar esos cambios en el país, con un impacto regional, nacional e internacional, nos enorgullece y ha despertado el optimismo en la comunidad, sin precedente en Augusta. Foto: Aníbal Ibarra AUGUSTA, GA (BP) - Miembros de la delegación legislativa de Augusta en el General Assembly de Georgia coinciden en que unos $50 millones en investigación sobre cáncer será de beneficio para la región. Tanto los representantes demócratas como republicanos, que en los últimos años no han coincidido mucho en política, separadamente han manifestado en reuniones públicas, que la aprobación por parte de los legisladores del monto millonario contribuirá en el desarrollo económico de Augusta y su área de influencia. El rubro será destinado al programa de investigación para continuar con la búsqueda de cura al cáncer. Georgia Regents University (GRU), antes conocida como Medical College of Georgia, recibirá esta ayuda económica para tal efecto. El impacto económico para la población en general de la suma millonaria no ha podido ser aclarado en detalles, pero para el presidente de la delegación legislativa, Henry Wayne Howard, demócrata, se verá reflejado en lo que descubran los científicos y el ahorro que significará en el tratamiento de enfermedades. Generalmente los estudios científicos pueden tardar años y los contribuidores de impuestos que esperan resultados de su inversión desean ver hechos concretos para ellos, conforme al questionamiento realizado a Howard. El legislador apuntó que esa es una manera muy egoista de ver el uso del dinero de los contribuyentes y que hay que mirar más allá de los intereses personales. Aunque seguidamente relató su caso personal del tratamiento de su rodilla. El político no respondió a la pregunta, que por otro lado no cuestiona la investigación científica sino la falta de rubros para necesidades más inmediatas, como dinero para mejorar el transporte público de pasajeros o salarios para docentes. Por su parte las damas republicanas del condado de Columbia recibieron igualmente una reseña de lo actuado por los legisladores conservadores en Atlanta. Ellos también subrayaron los $50 millones para GRU como lo máximo logrado en la sesión legislativa del 2013, que dura apenas 40 días en el estado de Georgia. La delegación legislativa de Augusta está conformada por casi una docena de representantes siendo la mayoría del ala conservadora de ambos partidos. A Few thoughts on Patriotism by Sam Booher, Martinez, GA The past war in Iraq and the current war still in Afghanistan are in all of our thoughts. As I drove drive around town I see homes flying American flags. We are reading in publication and hearing a lot in the news about National Security. It seems all Americans are untied by a strong love of country; the land that is home to us all, which shapes our character, and nourishes our spirit. However, I am left with a sense that something is missing. Yes, National Security is about protecting America from Terrorists. Yes it is about having a prepared military. But what is missing is the recognition that to maintain the quality of life, we have come to cherish and expect, we need to begin to Care for America. No one questions when Military Veterans are called Patriots. Though I spent 3 years carrying a rifle and fighting in VietNam, I know there are other ways to love and support ones country. I believe for someone to care for the survival of our country, they must care about the health of America: its air, water and soil. Looking back in history, when great powers began declining, they often had some form of environmental problem. No Great Power has ever existed long, once they had allowed the health of their country to decline. Some people believe that a Patriot is one who served in wars for their country and the only way to show support means waving a flag and watching a parade. My dictionary says a Patriot is one who guards their country s welfare. I believe one can not support patriotism by waving a Flag on the 4th of July and then pollute a stream or river on the 5th. I believe the public understands that Conservation of our Nation s Natural Heritage is a patriotic thing. En los últimos meses un grupo de activistas y usuarios liderados por Augusta Interfaith Coalition (AIC) ha estado promoviendo reuniones con las partes interesadas y simpatizantes del proyecto de expansión del servicio. Entre las propuestas de AIC existen sugerencias con sentido común y que expresan el deseo de los usuarios corrientes y potenciales: que las guaguas lleguen en una gran parte de la ciudad, como Fort Gordon, y particularmente el sur del área. Además que el servicio se provéa los domingos también y que el horario incluya las 24 horas. A pesar del esfuerzo realizado por AIC, el alcalde Deke Copenhaver y los 10 comisionados aún no han podido ponerse de acuerdo para siquiera aprobar una de las preliminares propuestas de AIC, consistente en la formación de un comité asesor del transporte público. 6 6 Republicans Courting Latino Businesses United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) President & CEO Javier Palomarez met with members of the Republican Study Committee (RSC), including Chairman Steve Scalise and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, for a Hispanic coalition roundtable. The meeting was convened by the RSC to facilitate an open and candid conversation about effectively amplifying Conservative policies and expanding the GOP s support base among the Hispanic community. The USHCC is pleased to work with the Republican Study Committee to underscore the important impact of the Hispanic business community, said Palomarez. At the meeting, we discussed the need to view immigration reform as an economic imperative, and I was glad to see that the members of the RSC understood the importance of supporting this important segment of America s entrepreneurial community. Joined by organizations including the National Association of Latino Elected & Appointed Officials, the Hispanic Leadership Network, and the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, the USHCC touched on a wideranging number of issues -- including immigration reform, media strategy, education and the economy -- and how they affect Hispanic entrepreneurs, their employees and families. Going forward, it will be imperative for both Democrats and Republicans to engage Hispanics in small and large communities across the country, - President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden meet with Latino leaders in the Roosevelt Room of the White House, April 29, (Official White House Photo by Pete Souza) Palomarez added. The round table is illustrative of that fact, and we look forward to working with both Democrats and Republicans in their future endeavors. Diversifying government personnel President Obama nominated Katherine Archuleta to Head the Office of Personnel Management. Under her leadership, we hope to see a more diverse and inclusive Administration, stated Palomarez. Impact of Women Entrepreneurs WASHINGTON (GN) - United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) President & CEO Javier Palomarez submitted written testimony to the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business & Entrepreneurship as part of the hearing, Strengthening the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem for Minority Women. The testimony, to be logged in the official Congressional Record, focuses on the growing influence and economic contributions of Latina entrepreneurs. The growth of Hispanic-owned business is one of the most remarkable stories of entrepreneurship in the history of our country, and the growth of Hispanic women-owned businesses is especially noteworthy, Palomarez stated in his testimony. According to a 2012 analysis by the National Women s Business Council, there are 787,914 Hispanic women-owned businesses in the United States. This reflects a tremendous 45.7% increase in number since 2002 and a 133.3% increase since The USHCC also applauded Senator Mary Landrieu, Chair of the Committee, for bringing attention to the importance of minority women-owned firms to the country s small business community and their tremendous impact on the larger American economy. As a business owner and job creator, I am pleased to see the issue of minority women entrepreneurship take center stage in Congress. By affording the USHCC the opportunity to submit testimony, Senator Landrieu has shown she understands the remarkable strides being made by the Hispanic business community and that she is prioritizing the future growth for this valuable group that is greatly contributing to our nation s economy, said Founder and CEO of Pinnacle Technical Resources and USHCC Chairman Emeritus, Nina Vaca. We look forward to working with the committee in the future on common-sense bills that relieve regulatory burdens on minority businesses and facilitate economic growth, added Palomarez. The initial hearing featured testimonies by strong allies to America s Hispanic business community including Marie Johns, Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration; Alejandra Castillo, National Deputy Director of the National Business Development Agency; and Eva Longoria, founder of the Eva Longoria Foundation. 7 7 Trabajadores invisibles Niñeras, limpiadores de casas, los cuidadores a veces se llaman los trabajadores más invisibles del mundo. Se estima que solo en los Estados Unidos más de 2 millones de personas hacen este tipo de trabajo. La mayoría son mujeres y muchas son inmigrantes. Y la presión a abordar sus condiciones de trabajo está aumentando. Como parte de nuestra cobertura nación global, la reportera Monica Campbell de PRI The World tiene la primera pieza de una serie sobre los trabajadores domésticos. Invisible Workforce A few years ago, Florence Tratar fell down. In her 80s, it was enough of a spill to change her life drastically and leave her bound to a wheelchair. And with no family nearby, she needed someone to move in and care for her immediately. But nobody she hired clicked, until she found Joesy Gerrish, a caregiver from Fiji. I liked her right away, says Tratar. So once Gerrish s references checked out, she was hired and moved in to help Tratar full time. It s easy to see why Tratar picked Gerrish. In her early 40s, she is energetic, has a quick laugh, and says she treats her employers like family. Now, Gerrish gets up early every morning, makes Tratar s meals, drives her to appointments. I do everything! Gerrish says. Everything! Tratar agrees. I mean, whatever I have to do, Joesy does. I met Tratar and Gerrish in Sebastopol, California, north of San Francisco. The two women had ventured out to see a short documentary about Gerrish. The film, by San Francisco-based director Theo Rigby, shows how immigrant caregivers increasingly fill a demand in the United States to attend to the disabled and elderly. The documentary shows Gerrish cooking and shopping for a previous employer, an ailing Japanese woman. She feeds her, turns her over so she won t get bed sores. It s non-stop work. After the film, Tratar realized how little she knew about Gerrish s life: How she misses Fiji and how she s in the US without legal authorization. This is a shock to me because I just didn t know, Tratar says. She s against hiring people without papers, she says. But she also can t say why she never asked Gerrish for documentation. Maybe because she didn t want to know, she says, because Gerrish was a good fit. Meanwhile, Gerrish says she doesn t worry about stepping out of the shadows so publicly. She tells Tratar how she s hoping immigration reform might grant her legal status. It s getting there, Gerrish tells Tratar. It s a long journey but we ll get there. Gerrish also tells Tratar how, in her off time, she is working to improve labor conditions for other caregivers, nannies and housekeepers. In California, it s estimated that some 200,000 people do this type of work, many without papers. She talks about women from Mexico she knows, along with other immigrants from elsewhere, who live in the US illegally and worry about getting deported on their way to work. Also, Gerrish says, she hears about women worried about getting paid, since they are off the books. If there is a dispute with an employer, wages can be held back and undocumented workers can be aware that they still have the right to claim wages. Oh, there s a lot of that, getting paid under the table. A lot! Tratar exclaims. Yes, Gerrish says, but that s the only kind of work that we can do. We would like to do other stuff. Purtill remembers Gerrish s reaction when she told her that, among other demands like overtime and vacation, they d push for workers to get uninterrupted sleep. She burst into laughter, in this uncomfortable laughter, like, Oh, I would love that. That would be amazing. I ve never had the right to sleep five hours in a row, or eight hours in a row, says Purtill. Caregiving requires sometimes, you know, care every two hours if you re caring for elderly people. It s the case with Gerrish, who wakes up with Florence Tratar at 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. every day. Oh my goodness gracious, you need domestic help, says Tratar. I don t know what I would do without Joesy. I couldn t survive. Tratar hopes that Gerrish will legalize her status in the US soon. She understands now that deportation is a constant worry for her caretaker. Teen Pregnancy Declined After Decades Remarkable 34% Decrease Among Latinas The latest figures released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that the decline in teen births seen over the past two decades has accelerated in recent years. The report found that birth rates for teenagers aged fell 25 percent nationwide during the five year period ( ) covered by CDC s newest study, resulting in a new record low. Birth rates among Hispanic teens, which had been higher than other racial and ethnic groups, saw a remarkable 34 percent decline over the same five year time span. To what can we attribute this dramatic drop in teen births? There are a number of key factors, including stronger teen pregnancy prevention education, the choice by many teens to delay sex, and higher rates of contraceptive use by teens who are sexually active. The Office of Adolescent Health (@TeenHealthGov) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is charged with taking the best thinking and evidence about teen pregnancy prevention strategies and disseminating it, and continuing to build evidence of the strategies that are most effective. Those of us who are working to support adolescent health and reduce teen pregnancies are understandably encouraged by this positive news. The stakes are high for teens, their parents, local communities, and our entire nation. Compared with teens who delay childbearing, teen girls who have babies are less likely to finish high school or attend college; more likely to rely on public assistance; and more likely to live in poverty as adults. Furthermore, children born to teen mothers are more likely to have poorer educational, behavioral, and health outcomes over the course of their lives than children born to older parents. We know that schools play an essential role in supporting adolescent health. Research tells us that the longer children remain in school and engaged in learning, the better their lifelong health. While the news reported is encouraging, there is more work to do. Significant racial and economic disparities persist. Teen birth rates for Hispanics and non- Hispanic blacks are nearly double the national average. In 2011, almost 330,000 babies were born to teen girls between the ages of 15 and 19 in the United States. The U.S. still lags behind other developed nations, including Canada and the United Kingdom, which have much lower teen birth rates. Now is the time to accelerate momentum we have seen by continuing to engage and equip families, schools, health care providers, and communities to better address adolescent health issues, including teen pregnancy prevention. To that end, the Office of Adolescent Health is working with partners and providing needed support to organizations working to prevent teen pregnancy and help pregnant and parenting teens. Our website, which includes a range of helpful adolescent health information, features a new Teen Pregnancy Prevention Resource Center with training materials and resources for grantees and other organizations working to reduce teen pregnancy. We ve also created a database of evidencebased programs for reducing teen pregnancies in a broad range of settings and communities. The historic declines in teen birth rates in recent years make it clear that our collective efforts are paying off. We applaud the efforts of all those working with adolescents, families and communities across our nation. Most of all, we applaud America s teens who are taking greater responsibility for their health and wellbeing, and parents who are talking to their teenage children about the importance of pregnancy prevention. As we observe National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, we are committed to building on the progress reflected in CDC s new report by helping communities move forward with effective, proven strategies for reducing teen pregnancies. Green Party Urges a Moratorium on GMOs Para apaicuar los ánimos, dirigentes políticos y policiacos, han convocado a la ciudadanía en diferentes foros para puntualizar que unos pocos elementos indeseables no van a limitar el gozo de la mayoría de los habitantes y visitantes de Augusta. La violencia desatada en las calles, y especialmente el último primer viernes de mayo en el centro de Augusta, en Broad Street, entre las calles 10 y 7 y ya entrada la noche en la costanera de Riverwalk, ha puesto en dudas la seguridad. No obstante, el dirigente empresarial Ben Casella dijo a una docena de presentes durante una reunión matinal en la costanera, que los incidentes ocurridos son típicos de una ciudad, pero que nada se aproxima a los experimentados en otras grandes ciudades cosmopolitas. Pero la incógnita para algunos residentes del centro de Augusta y políticos del área, es la aparente cosnpiración de algunos elementos externos, o internos también, que pretenden mancillar la imagen de la zona. En la gráfica se puede observar a dos mujeres de color como parte de la pelea de la última semana de abril cuando un grupo de personas de color se dieron a trompadas, mientras era filmada por un muchacho blanco y luego exibida en las redes sociales. Buscando en la Internet se puede también encontrar a adultos blancos instigando violencia entre ellos. Los partidarios de la teoría de la conspiración en contra de los progresos ya materializados en el centro de Augusta y los proyectados, sostienen que existen intereses que prefieren ver el área convertirse en un sitio desolado para que el condado de Columbia pueda levantarse. Pero no solo está el condado vecino, también North Augusta y Aiken están compitiendo duramente contra Augusta, lo cual parece tener lógica. Monsanto has gained enormous political power in the U.S., with its tentacles wrapped around Congress and the Obama Administration, said Nancy Allen, former co-chair of the Green Party of the United States and Maine Green Independent Party, and organic small farmer for 40 years. The reckless introduction of GMOs [genetically modified organisms] into agriculture is turning small farmers into serfs under Monsanto s control, damaging biodiversity, and yielding crops that pose health risks to consumers, as well as livestock and plant populations. Greens said that the biotech industry has grown into a monopolistic cartel, with Monsanto and two other corporations controlling more than half of the world s commercial seed market. We must hold Monsanto and its executives accountable for the damage they re causing around the world. We must reform campaign finance laws that have given such companies so much influence over Congress and the White House. We also need further research into the effects of GMOs and a moratorium on their use in food crops until these effects are better known. And we demand that GMO products be labeled accurately so that consumers can make informed decisions about what they buy and eat, said Frank Raymond Cetera, Co-Founder and Vice-President of the Alchemical Nursery and a New York Green. The plank on agriculture in the Green Party s national platform reads Applying the Precautionary Principle to genetically modified organisms (GMOs), we support a moratorium until safety can be demonstrated by independent (non-corporate funded), long-term tests for food safety, genetic drift, resistance, soil health, effects on non-target organisms, and cumulative interactions. GMO crop strains designed to resist Monsanto s RoundUp herbicide (glyphosate) and GMO animal feed have led to new and more virulent plant, animal, and human diseases. On May 13, the Supreme Court ruled that an Indiana farmer must pay Monsanto $84,000 for using the company s genetically engineered RoundUp Ready seeds that were mixed into other seeds he had purchased, even though the GMO seeds were not labeled as such (Bowman v. Monsanto Co.; see org/headline/2013/05/13-3). Monsanto s lobbyists have persuaded President Obama and Congress to pass the Farmer Assurance Provision in the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act (2013), nicknamed the Monsanto Protection Act because it blocks the power of federal courts to halt the sale or planting of GMO seeds, regardless of any harmful health effects caused by the seeds. Greens support the repeal of irrelevant sections of this legislation. Monsanto s influence has resulted in the appointment of the company s former executives to top positions in the FDA s food safety division, including Michael Taylor, Deputy Commissioner for Foods. So why, at 9:03 a.m. fifteen minutes after it was clear the United States was under terrorist attack did President Bush sit down with a classroom of second-graders and begin a 20-minute pre-planned photo op? No one knows the answer to that question. In fact, no one has even asked Bush about it. And the IRS? During the middle years of the Bush era, the IRS looked into the tax status of the NAACP. Under the leadership of Julian Bond and Kweisi Mfume, both former legislators, the group had become more outspoken on partisan political topics. Boom the IRS showed up. Investigating the NAACP in 2005 was akin to investigations conducted by Jim Crow states. So, why is so brutal the tax status questions the IRS sent to groups like the Liberty Township Tea Party? Even more espectacular, President Obama is all over this matter. Commissioner Johnson defended his vote by stating Russell had the authority to do what he did, and he could not fire a man for something he had the authority to do. Russell was instrumental for the building of a parking deck not authorized by the Richmond County voters in front of the infamous TEE Center or Augusta Convention, as the private owners like to call the place. Three commissioners could have possibly violated the city s ethics code. Commissioners Wayne Guilfoyle, Joe Jackson and Grady Smith have admitted their wrongdoing. If we got thieves and thugs around here or people that are dishonest, what are they sitting up here for? Smith asked. Perhaps voters want Smith to answer his own question. His company, Smith Brother Contractors, has done multiple city projects. But the three commissioners are still sitting comfortable at the Marble Palace. The person no longer sitting on his chair is Mr. Beck, though. When recreation operations manager Melinda Pearson got four paid days off only three weeks after returning from 10 weeks of donated paid leave, it raised concerns among employees who d given Pearson their sick leave. The paid time off, documented as four days worked by Recreation Director Tom Beck, was the only reason cited by commissioners when they voted 8-1 to fire Beck in Just thinking...wired taped. It s a discreet place where the members of First Baptist Country Club might enjoy a little red wine with dinner, if not their holy communion; where top secret and sweet tea go together like, well, bourbon and water. Some say that what you don t know can t hurt you. But what you don t know is very important, too... and certainly what you don t want others to know you know. So thus we acknowledge both the knowns and unknowns, a tip of the hat to vintage Rummy. How apropos, in this mecca of old soldiers fading away. Seems like half the populace has served in, retired from or is currently employed by the military, one of the region s (and indeed the state s) most beneficent employers. An untold number of others (Department of Defense (DoD) civilians, contractors and other assorted spooky types) also earn their daily bread from the cyber-circus that includes the U.S. Army Signal Center, belly button of the behemoth known as Fort Gordon, GA. While the mother ship (i.e., the U.S. Cyber Command) garners the media blitz, it s satellites like Fort Gordon and Fort Detrick, MD, whose legions of Signaleers actually keep Big Brother buzzing behind the scenes. Countless outpost worker bees intercept and analyze and phone traffic from around the globe; our leaders have convinced many (if not themselves) that it s for our protection, in the interest of national security. Due to the Bible-belt demographic, Augustans are fundamentally a Godfearing lot. But they d rather not dig too deep into things like Guantanamo, the counter-insurgency (COIN) strategy, and in general what is formerly known as the Global War on Terror ( GWOT ). For the COIN of the realm remains Uncle Sam s fat checkbook, and since the local gentry are piously patriotic, but also imminently practical, they d never disparage anything military-related. After all, DoD effectively threw them a huge lifeline some years ago, following a round of Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) activities, when many military towns were rolling up the tent. Instead, Augusta received an infusion, a transfusion really - it was granted not only a reprieve, but began expanding in earnest. And on that bandwagon quietly rode a rich new kid, namely, the National Security Agency (NSA), which built a grand complex guaranteed to create several thousand jobs and a lucrative groundswell for the local economy. Many co-conspirators have clearances mandating they conceal their affiliation with those three letter agencies besides DoD. And they are just fine keeping the details quiet, thank you kindly. And payback is a bonanza - where else can civil servants have a home with a pool in the historic district, for less than most poor souls in D.C. pay for a one-bedroom apartment? So life is dandy in Augusta... as long as you are a member of the pro-war party. All may join prospective members just need to understand and play by the rules. Call yourself a republican or democrat, it matters not, so long as you support the troops, hate terrorism, and love Israel, which most Augustans do... putting some of us in an uneasy place. As a veteran (and devout Christian, born and bred in the South) by nature I relate to all the above. But as an independent thinker and, I daresay, born-again peacenik, I ve come to realize that blind obeisance to the war machine and its filthy lucre is paving our road to perdition. I also see that my adopted hometown is one eye of a moving storm which is decimating the rule of law and, by extension, the America we love... right down in refined little Augusta, at off-the-radar Fort Gordon, our U.S. Constitution is being systematically eroded, as the ever expanding military industrial octopus cements its tentacle prints all around the secure confines of its post- BRAC jackpot. 13 13 Crisis energética republicana Es el fin para el GOP? La negativa de los líderes del Partido Republicano en reconocer la gravedad del deterioro climático preocupa a Sam Booher. El activista ambiental y miembro del Grand Old Party (GOP), como también es conocido su partido, en entrevista con Bienvenidos Press, no ocultó su desagrado por la forma en que la dirigencia republicana se ha estado comportando en los últimos diez años. Booher es presidente de Sierra Club, una organización no gubernamental que se dedica en proteger los recursos naturales del país. Es dificil poner una cara repubicana como ambientalista, pero Booher no tiene inconvenientes en ello y está acostumbrado a recibir palos de erecha o de izquierda. De derecha porque sus correligionarios no pueden entender cómo es posible que un republicano ponga la naturaleza por encima de la ganacia a toda costa, y de izquierda, porque los zurdos o liberales no pueden explicarse cómo un republicano puede ser sensible a los recursos natuarles ofrecidos gratuitamente por Madre Tierra. Y eso es precisamente lo que molesta al republicano ambientalista, el hecho que se haya vociado el cuidado del planeta con lo más tóxico que la radiactividad, el fanatismo ciego que lleva al hombre a destruirse y a contaminar el suelo, el aire y el agua de nuestro ecosistema. Pero Booher no pierde la esperanza en el hombre, sobre todo en los jóvenes, quienes pueden continuar su trabajo de proteccioón del medio ambiente, ya sea uniéndose al grupo local de Sierra Club o influyendo en las decisiones de la dirigencia de su partido. Para nuestro entrevistado, no todo está perdido en cuanto a la defensa del planeta, pero indudablemente la tarea es titánica. Hay demasiado dinero de los magnates del petróleo como para torcer la voluntad del más acérrimo defensor del medio ambiente, conforme a su entender. Existen alternativas de fuentes de energía que pueden satisfacer las necesidades de los países, sin embargo los petroleros no quieren aflojar. La explotación petrolera seguirá su curso y no les importa el daño al medio ambiente, con tal de ver sus cofres llenos, puntualizó. Y es allí, en la persistencia de las nuevas generaciones por exigir más energía solar, de vientos, hidroeléctrica y otros medios es que radica el optimismo del activista ambiental por superar la crisis. Lo curioso del tema es que en el Partido Republicano hay una crisis energética, a más de crisis de identidad ideológica, que ponde el rumbo de la agrupación política a la deriva. El entusiasmo está por el suelo. Para Booher el GOP ha perdido su - Se estima que la población de los Estados Unidos se elevará a 438 millones en el 2050 y los republicanos tendrán que enfrentarse, más temprano que tarde, a la realidad climática. Seguir tapando el sol con un dedo no es opción. filosofía tradicional conservadora cuando se dio paso a los republicanos considerados teetistas o de la facción ultraderecha, que desconoce la autoridad del partido y su línea fiscal. Vale decir, cuando la dirigencia del partido, cegado por la abundancia monetaria de un considerable número de teetistas dejó que el GOP sea influenciado por dinero por encima de sus principios ideológicos. La única manera que los republicanos puedan recuperar su rol de importancia política, según nuestro entrevistado, es volviendo a sus raíces. Eso es alentando la libertad individual y colectiva, la defensa inalterable de la propiedad privada, la protección de los recursos naturales y respetando las ideas, subrayó.
