Although stoichiometric NiO is a strong insulator, with resistivity values of order of 1013 Ω cm, structural disorder and lack of stoichiometry considerably lower these values. Indeed, NiO thin films have been proposed as a p-type semiconducting transparent material [1]. Nanocrystalline NiO thin films have been grown on different substrates by RF magnetron sputtering with mixed O2-Ar plasma composition, varying the oxygen content of the plasma between 0% and 100%. The films were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and the electronic structure was studied through X-ray absorption near edge and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies (XAS, XPS). SEM results reveal a grain refinement when oxygen is added to the plasma, which is also observed by XRD. The analysis of EXAFS data shows that the presence of O2 in the plasma induces lattice disorder, as evidenced by the observed increase of the Debye-Waller factor. These microstructural changes modify the electronic structure of the NiO thin films. The spectral line shape in Ni 2p XPS spectra shows clear differences between samples grown with and without O2 in the plasma. These differences can be explained in terms of the observed structural changes. With Van der Pauw method the resistivity values of films grown with oxygen in the plasma are lower than that of films grown with pure Ar, and decrease as the oxygen content of the plasma increase. A p-type conduction would give rise

6 to empty states that should be visible by XAS. The near edge structure at the oxygen K-edge shows the density of empty Ni d-states hybridized with oxygen p-states above the Fermi level, and it is very sensitive to chemical and structural changes [2, 3]. Figure shows XANES spectra measured at the O-K edge. The observed peaks are related to empty Ni-3d states hybridized with O- 2p states above the Fermi level. The spectrum of the sample with 0% oxygen shows the typical features of standard NiO. For the samples grown with oxygen in the plasma, a peak appears 3 ev below the absorption edge. This peak can be assigned to empty states below the Fermi energy, i.e., to hole states [4]. The intensity of this peak increases with the oxygen content of the plasma, as does the conductivity of the films. Consequently, there is a direct correlation between the intensity of this peak, associated to hole states, and the conductivity of the NiO films. [1]. H. Sato, T. Minami, S. Takata, T. 7 10:20 Entanglement generation, manipulation and detection in waveguide QED Carlos González Ballestero Dpto. de Física Teórica de la Materia Condensada Entanglement generation, manipulation and detection in waveguide QED Carlos Gonzalez-Ballestero 1, F.J. Garcia-Vidal 1, and Esteban Moreno 1 1 Dpto. de Física Teórica de la Materia Condensada, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. carlos.ballestero@uam.es Quantum entanglement lies as a fundamental resource for quantum information and communication purposes. The elemental system they rely on is the two-qubit ensemble. In order to design efficient quantum devices, a simple way of controlling the state of qubits, as well as their degree of entanglement, is required. Recently, waveguides have arisen as a promising candidate for scalable quantum devices, as they offer a simple way for the input and output of information while achieving high qubit-photon couplings. Recent works have shown that entanglement can be generated between two qubits interacting through a plasmonic waveguide [1]. This system has been studied by using a Master Equation formalism, in which the electromagnetic degrees of freedom are traced out via the so-called Markov approximation. In this work we address the problem of entanglement generation with a real-space formalism in which the photonic modes are explicitly taken into account. By diagonalizing the full hamiltonian in the one-excitation Fock subspace [2], we show that new, non-markovian effects appear in the regime of high qubitwaveguide coupling, as the photon dynamics play a relevant role in the timeevolution of the system. In the previous analysis, entanglement is generated from a non-equilibrium initial state, in which the qubits are initially prepared in a disentangled configuration. The second part of this work addresses the problem of generating entanglement via an incoming guided photon. Moreover, we extend our study to the two-photon case, in which new phenomena appear such as sudden death, revival, and full suppression of the entanglement. This allows for a manipulation of the qubit-qubit quantum correlations, as we are able to generate pulses of entanglement with the desired duration. In the final part of the work, we address the problem of entanglement detection. We propose a simple and general way of measuring the entanglement between qubits via single-photon scattering. By demonstrating the viability of both entanglement detection, manipulation, and detection, we show the promising features of waveguides towards the implementation of waveguide QED devices. [1] A. Mechanical properties of viral shells obtained through Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) [1] and continuum elasticity theory, such as stiffness or Young s modulus, have been interpreted very often in terms of stability. However, viruses are normally subjected to chemical rather than to mechanical aggressions[2]. Thus, a correct interpretation of mechanics in terms of stability requires an adequate linkage between the abilities of viral cages to support chemical and mechanical stresses. Here we study the mechanical fragility and chemical stability of bacteriophage T7 in two different maturation states: the early proheads and the final mature capsids[3]. Using chemical stress experiments we show that proheads are less stable than final mature capsids. Still, both particles present similar anisotropic stiffness, indicating that a continuum elasticity[4] description in terms of Young s modulus is not an adequate measure of viral stability[5]. In combination with a computational coarse-grained model[6,7] we demonstrate that mechanical anisotropy of T7 emerges of the discrete nature of the prohead and empty capsid. Even though they present the same stiffness, proheads break earlier and have fractures ten times larger than mature capsids, in agreement with chemical stability, thus demonstrating that fragility rather than stiffness is a better indicator of viral cages stability.

We show that the use of optical interferometry[1] in momentum space, avoiding any spatial overlap between two parts of a macroscopic quantum state, renders a unique way to address a longstanding question: Do two components of a condensate, which have never seen each other, possess a definitive phase? [2-4]This issue is related to the superposition principle in quantum mechanics and it is crucial to understand how mutual coherence is acquired. [5] Due to the essential role played by the photonic component of the macroscopic quantum state, an adequate system for such experiments is a condensate of exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity.[6] When the photons being part of these quasi-particles are emitted, they carry information on the coherence of the system. [7] Our experiments, in an AlGaAs-based microcavity ridge, definitively show the build-up of coherence in a macroscopic quantum state made of two polariton bullets that are spatially separated.[8] [1] Z. We demonstrate how the simultaneous incorporation of Gold Nano rods (GNRs) as nano-heaters (NHs) and CdSe-QDs as NTs, opens the possibility of controlled hyperthermia at cellular level. This novel mechanism of specific and controlled cell death could represent a remarkable step towards new clinically relevant methods for cancer treatment at early stages with minimal invasiveness and, hence, with negligible collateral effects. For the purpose of simultaneous incorporation of NTs and NHs into living cells we prepared a biologically compatible phosphate buffered saline (PBS) solution containing CdSe-QDs (4 nm diameter) and GNRs (40 nm height x 15 nm wide). The emission peak position of the CdSe-QDs is highly temperature sensitive in the physiological temperature range (25-60ºC) 1. This property is used to determined the cells tempertature (see Figure 1) under heating and non heating conditions. [1] Maestro, L. M.; Rodriguez, E. M.; Rodriguez, F. S.; la Cruz, M. This spin state manifests itself experimentally in different ways when the molecule is deposited on different surfaces. The MnPc deposited on metallic or semimetallic surfaces, such as bismuth or lead, exhibits an unexpected multiorbital Kondo effect [1-4]. In contrast, when the MnPc is deposited on a magnetic surface such as manganese, which breaks time-reversal invariance, spin polarized STM experiments reveal a non trivial magnetoresistance phenomenon. With the aim to understand all these effects we have performed a density functional theory based calculations using a non-equilibrium Green's functions formalism and impurity solver techniques implemented in our ANT code [5]. In this contribution, we consider the dispersive regime of a coherently excited QD embedded in a microcavity [4,5]. At certain resonant frequencies of the coherent excitation, quantum superpositions of the ground state and N- photon Fock states inside the cavity are obtained. In strongly dissipative systems, as is the case of semiconductor implementations of cavity QED physics, such a quantum dynamics gives rise to strongly correlated emission. We focus on the cases N = 2 and N = 3 and show, through a joint master equation description and Monte Carlo simulations, how the system can be brought to emit the intregality of its light in bundles of N photons [6]. Counterintuitively, we show that the standard photon-counting coincidence g (2) (0) is not a good measure to quantify such an emission. We introduce a new quantity, π N, that quantifies the percentage of N-photon emission and show that large values of bunching are anticorrelated with large values of π N. Finally, we show how the definition of generalized correlation functions that regard the bundles as the basic entity of emission can reveal a new landscape of regimes, from N-photon guns to N-photon lasers, that are hidden from the single-photon point of view. Figure 1. Probability of detection of n photons in a given time window, at the one photon (red), two photon (blue) and three photon (green) emission regimes. Independently of the time window, the distribution is that of a coherent source of pairs at the two photon regime, and a coherent source of triplets at the three photon regime.

Their excitonic component leads to interaction between them and therefore under appropriate conditions condensation can be achieved by non-resonant or quasi-resonant pumping in the OPO scheme [2]. This condensed phase shows intriguing properties as superfluidity and remarkable coherence properties [3,4]. We studied a hybrid system where a 2D and 1D systems co-exist allowing us to investigate simultaneously the polarization properties of both condensates created in an OPO process. Remarkable differences in their light emission appear when the polarization plane of the excitation laser is changed: while the 2D condensate emits polarized light rotated 90 degree with respect to the polarization of the excitation laser [4], the 1D condensate presents a switching behavior between two highly linearly polarized state. Two complementary models, based on semi-classical Boltzmann kinetic equations and on the Gross- Pitaevskii equation, respectively, obtain an excellent agreement with the experimental results, providing a deep insight into the mechanisms responsible for the polarization switching.

The experimental results are interpreted in the light of simulations based on a generalized Gross- Pitaevskii equation. 1 The combination of two 2 ps-long, non-resonant light pulses [see Fig. 1(i)] optically controls the AND-switch response. The system dynamics is fully studied both in momentum and real space, and at different polariton emission energies, obtaining a complete account of the velocities [Figs. 1(a-c)] and positions [Figs. 1(i-iii)] of the polariton wave trains as well as of their energy relaxation. The ON state of the gate is constituted by a long-lived (~200 ps) trapped polariton condensate at the border of the ridge, Fig. 1(iii). The ignition of this state is mediated by the parametric scattering between two oscillating polariton wave trains that are enclosed in a half-parabolic potential, Fig. 1(ii). [1] C. Antón, et al., arxiv: (2013) (accepted in Phys. Rev. B).

21 Figure 1. Emission in momentum/real space along the k x /x-axis parallel to the ridge versus time in the left/right column for the energies: (1 st row), (2 nd row) and ev (3 rd row). The intensity in all panels is coded in a normalized, logarithmic false-color scale. The grey dots in panel (i) mark the spatial-temporal coordinates of the laser beams. In the right column the vertical lines at 0, 50 and 100 µm depict the positions of the excitonic barriers created by the pulsed laser A, B and by the edge of the ridge, respectively. Panels (1,i) show the movement of short-lived hot polaritons. They relax rapidly attaining the energy of the propagating condensate wave trains: the S-shaped profiles (ii) arise from the oscillation of these wave trains bounded by the aforementioned barriers. These oscillations are also evidenced by the traces in momentum space (b). The bottom row shows the ON state of the AND gate, constituted by a trapped condensate (iii), which weakly oscillates at the bottom of the half-parabolic potential (c).

In some of them, interesting properties have been found. The α-bi 2 Pd superconductor (T c =3.87K) is non-centrosymmetric and thus cannot simply form Cooper pairs with k and k as proposed in most simple BCS theory [1]. The Bi 2 Pd compound has two phases, the α- and β-phase. The β-phase has a layered structure with the potential to give new a layered system upon exfoliation. Superconductivity was found in 2012 with a T c of 5.4 K [2]. Band structure calculations [3] proposed a double gap structure, a possibility which seems in agreement with specific heat measurements [3]. Here we describe growth and characterization of crystals of α - and β-bi 2 Pd phases using Bi flux method. We have measured electrical resistivity and magnetization as a function of temperature and magnetic field in both phases. We find T c of 5.1K for β-bi 2 Pd. We find a residual resistance ratio of 3. The β- phase shows upper critical field of 0.6 T along the plane of the layered crystal structure and of 0.5 T perpendicular to the plane. We discuss efforts to obtain thin layers of β-bi 2 Pd, and show results with AFM that point to the observation of 50 layer thick flakes. [1] M. Mondal, Phys. Rev. B 86, (2012). [2] Y. Imai: J. Phys. García Vidal, 1 and Juan José García- Ripoll 2 1 Departamento de Física Teórica de la Materia Condensada, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain 2 Instituto de Física Fundamental, IFF-CSIC, Madrid, Spain francisco.delpino@uam.es As a direct consequence of the quantum superposition principle, a system composed of subsystems has states that cannot be factorized in products of states of its components. This nonseparability, labeled as entanglement, is at the heart of quantum cryptography, quantum teleportation and other two-qubit quantum operations. Initial applications used well-isolated systems like photons and trapped atoms or ions. Nowadays, short-distance entanglement is attainable in condensed matter systems, e.g., for spin or charge degrees of freedom in quantum dots, nanotubes, and molecules. However, for transmission of information at long distances, large separations between the components are needed. For this purpose, the correlation between the two qubits must be mediated by carriers such as bosonic quasiparticles. This role is typically played by photons, either in the microwave range for superconducting qubits, or in the visible range for quantum dots, molecules and nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. Replacing photons with surface plasmons is one possible path towards bringing such setups to the nanoscale. The rapid advances in this direction have led to the emergence of the field of quantum plasmonics [1]. The biggest obstacle facing the use of plasmonic structures in quantum information applications is their large loss. This can be alleviated by using schemes that are robust to loss [2], or even exploited in dissipation-driven entanglement generation [3]. However, these schemes generate entanglement between fermionic quantum emitters and only use plasmonic modes to mediate the interactions. In this contribution, we demonstrate that instead, the bosonic plasmon modes themselves can show a high degree of entanglement even in the presence of large losses. Due to their bosonic character, this requires the use of tools from continuous variable quantum information [4]. The system we study is a chain of plasmonic nanoparticles (Fig. 1). Such a chain can transmit energy below the diffraction limit by means of coupled plasmon modes, as a plasmonic waveguide [5] but has relatively high transmission losses (~3 db/500 nm). Indeed, classical models predict low power transmittance [6], so the system is not suitable for waveguiding purposes. We demonstrate that the system

24 nevertheless exhibits entanglement between different particle plasmones for experimentally relevant coupling and dissipation rates (Fig. 2). This entanglement can be accessed in far-field measurements that are within the reach of recent advances in the field. Figure 1. System under study. Figure 2.

In order to understand the formation of these nanostructures, a model based on the gasification of the graphite catalyzed by the cobalt clusters formed upon heating is proposed. The nanochannels have been characterized by means of micro-raman spectroscopy images, showing the defective Raman D band of Graphite. It has also been observed that these nanostructures are not formed if the oxygen exposure is performed prior to thermal annealing. This effect has been explained in terms of the Ellingham diagrams [1] for each possible oxidation process. Visible white electroluminescence (EL) at room temperature has been observed from Zinc Oxide/porous Silicon (ZnOPS) nanocomposite devices. White light results from the combination of red emission from PS and blue and green emission from deep level defects in ZnO nanocrystals. ZnOPS nanocomposites were produced by sol-gel, since this technique allows the proper infiltration of ZnO precursors into the porous silicon enhancing the interaction between them. Light-emitting devices were obtained by forming a conductive transparent ITO contact on the ZnOPS surface. Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics and EL spectra of the ZnOPS light emitting devices have been studied at room temperature in the dark.

The aim of this work is to synthesize single phase CZTS material by solid state reaction. Different chemical routes have been investigated: i) from pure elements, ii) from Cu 2 S, SnS 2 and ZnS binary compounds, and iii) from Cu 2 SnS 3 ternary and ZnS binary compounds. In the first case, the synthesis was performed using Cu, Zn, Sn and S pure elements. An excess of 40% of sulphur was added to guarantee the formation of the Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 compound [1]. The second and third procedures were carried out following the phase diagrams described in [2]. The best results have been achieved following the first and third routes. The samples grown from the pure elements led to slightly Zn-rich CZTS material as determined by Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX). However, the samples synthesized from Cu 2 SnS 3 +ZnS showed more crystalline structure evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), being the pattern characterized by reliable unique fingerprints of CZTS diffraction peaks at low 2Ө angles. In spite of that, ZnS secondary phase was also found as well as a non-homogeneous composition along the ingot. Raman spectroscopy was used to confirm the identification of the phases present in the compounds grown following the different chemical reaction ways. As already reported in the literature, the difficulty of obtaining a single phase kesterite material [3] is shown. A homogenization of the grown material or a synthesis process at higher temperatures may result in the optimum material to investigate the optoelectronic properties of the bulk kesterite compound. Elizalde 1 and C. Morant 1 1 Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Department of Applied Physics, 28049, Madrid, Spain arancha.gomez@uam.es Si-based materials have recently gained great interest as an alternative to graphite for the anode of rechargeable lithium batteries due to the high specific capacity of Si. The application of silicon anodes, however, has an inherent problem. During the cycling performance, lithium ions produce huge volume changes in the material which result in a rapid capacity fading of the battery. In addition, its semiconductive character hinders the electrode redox process and electronic diffusion, compared with the good conductivity of the graphite In this study, we present a simple procedure to avoid both problems. Si nanowires (SiNWs) are used to replace bulk silicon. On the other hand, electronic conduction can be improved by the addition of different carbonconductive nanostructures (graphitized carbon nanofibers and graphene oxide nanosheets) on the anode electrode. We use conductive substrates (copper and stainless steel) with the carbon nanostructures on their surface, covered by a thin film of gold. The silicon nanowires were synthesized on a thermal treatment process at temperature of 900 o C in H 2 and Ar atmosphere. The details of this method are extensively described in our recent patent [1]. The advantage of this method lies in the fact that the resulting material, i. e. the conductive substrate with the nanowires grown on it, becomes the final anode electrode. In this way, this synthesized material is directly assembled in a half-cell, without any previous treatment, for its electrochemical characterization.
