14 9 STUDENT-LED ACTIVE LEARNING WORKSHOPS: INCREASING STUDENT RETENTION, DECREASING TIME TO GRADUATION AND PROVIDING HIGH-PERFORMING STUDENTS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO DEVELOP COACHING SKILLS MOURTOS, NIKOS J. 1 ; WOODROW, PAUL 1 ; nikos.mourtos@sjsu.edu; paul.m.woodrow@gmail.com Many engineering students come to upper-division courses with inadequate problem solving skills. As a result, they often repeat core courses, thus increasing their time to graduation. One approach that had been tried in the past was to review material in class and offer retake exams. This approach proved both inefficient and ineffective, as student performance on retake exams was often as poor as it was on the original test. In Fall 2011 a new approach was introduced. Students are now required to attend a workshop before retaking a test. Officers of the student chapter of the aerospace engineering honor society lead the workshops. These highly performing students have a good grasp of the material and are trained to conduct the workshops using active learning strategies. The workshops have resulted in significant improvement of student test scores, while at the same time providing opportunities for student leaders to sharpen their coaching skills. 15 27 LEAN SIX SIGMA METHOD TO FOCUS RESOURCES IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION PROGRAMS KANAKANA, GRACE 1 ; VAN WYK, BAREND J 1 ; PRETORIOUS, JAN HARM 2 ; kanakanamg@tut.ac.za; vanwykb@tut.ac.za; jhcpretorius@uj.ac.za Many models focus on student performance during high school and first year university to determine ways to improve faculty throughput. However, studies linking throughput to the allocation of scarce resources in a higher education environment are limited. The purpose of this study is to answer the following questions: 1) Can Lean Six Sigma and Network calculation be utilized to determine where resources should be focused? 2) How can Lean Six Sigma tools be applied to engineering education to determine focus areas within the program structure? Sigma level calculation coupled with Rolled Throughput Yield and the Network Function were utilized to identify the areas where resources should be focused in an industrial engineering program at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). The utilization of Lean Six Sigma methodology and the Network Function were found to be effective in identifying subject areas where the faculty should invest resources to achieve an optimal improvement in throughput rate. 16 30 PREPARING ENGINEERS FOR THE GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN IN MANUFACTURING LAHIDJI, BOB 1 ; TUCKER, WALTER 1 ; bob.lahidji@emich.edu; Walter.Tucker@emich.edu Engineering tecimology faculty at University E (UE) have developed curricula which prepare graduates to work in the globalized supply chain. Engineers working in global supply chains must possess a range of skills not required in either a vertically integrated company or in a purely domestic supply chain. Faculty must be familiar not only with their own engineering discipline but also the globalized world in which their graduates will work. Beyond the complexities of product design, engineers in the global supply chain require mastery of skills including multi-site sharing/transfer of computer data; global quality standards such as ISO/ TS 16949; communication techniques such as asynchronous data sharing and c-conferences; sensitivity to language and cultural issues; and finance/cost. 17 33 REINSERCIÓN ACADÉMICA DE ESTUDIANTES Y TERMINALIDAD EXITOSA DE CARRERA MUROS, HORACIO 1 ; ROCA SOLÉ, DANIEL 1 ; CUELLO, PATRICIA SANDRA 1 ; FORTUNATO, MIGUEL ÁNGEL 1 ; horaciomuros@yahoo.com.ar; danielrocasole@yahoo.com.ar; ingpatricuello@gmail.com; ingmfortunato@yahoo.com.ar Muchos alumnos que han terminado de cursar y de regularizar todas sus materias, por distintas razones experimentan con el tiempo un estadio de letargo o paralización académica, que les impide avanzar en sus estudios, llegando en la mayoría de los casos al abandono y deserción. Esta situación es más frecuente de lo que se supone y constituye una seria problemática que puede ser superada; ya que estos alumnos tienen un recorrido académico avanzado y tan solo les faltan algunas materias para poder recibirse. Por medio del programa de Tutorías de reincersión académica, y a partir de distintas adaptaciones curriculares, se buscó garantizar diferentes procesos de mediación pedagógica que favorecieron nuevos aprendizajes y la concreción exitosa de sus estudios. Many students once they have finished all of their required classes and have also regularized all of their courses, for various reasons fall into a state of lethargy or academic arrest which prevents them from advancing in their studies, in many cases to the point of indifference and desertion. This situation is more common than expected, and it constitutes a serious problem that can be overcome; these students have already walked a long academic stretch and are only missing a few courses to graduate. With the implementation of a program named How to Finish your Degree through Academic Tutoring and with a few curricular adaptations sought to ensure different pedagogic mediation processes, it resulted in new apprenticeships and the sucessful completion of their studies. 18 41 LA EVALUACIÓN CONTINUA DEL APRENDIZAJE COMO HERRAMIENTA PROMOCIONAL GALLO, OMAR D. 1 ; FERREYRA, DIEGO M. 1 ; BEINOTTI, RAÚL 1 ; odgallo@gmail.com; diegoferreyraing@yahoo.com.ar; rbeinotti@gmail.com En este trabajo, se proponen algunas mejoras aplicables a un método sencillo de evaluaión continua puesto en práctica por un grupo de profesores de la cátedra Máquinas e Instalaciones Eléctricas de la Universidad Tecnológica Nacional, de Argentina. Dicho método constituye un intento por aportar nuevas experiencias que validen la efectividad de la evaluación continua del aprendizaje, que ha sido demostrada en innumerables estudios pedagógicos y también contemplada como alternativa en las reglamentaciones de aquella universidad. El procedimiento que aquí se expone que intenta lograr máxima efectividad al menor osto posible surge como resultado de ensayos de diversas formas de evaluación de los estudiantes en el aula que produjeron, entre otros efectos, que un importante porcentaje de aquellos se involucren con la asignatura, aprueben su correlativa anterior durante el año y superen con soltura el examen promocional de la primera fecha de diciembre. In this work, a number of proposals are given to improve a simple continuous assessment method implemented by a group of professors in Electric Machinery at the National Technological University, in Argentina. Said method is part of an attempt to gain new experiences toward the validation of the efficacy of continuous learning assessment techniques, which has already been demonstrated in several pedagogical studies. Continuous learning assessment has also been considered as a valid alternative in said university s regulations. The procedure herein exposed, which tends to attain maximum efficacy at a minimum cost, was developed while trying out several other assessment methods. Among other benefits, said methods gradually brought about greater commitment among a high proportion of the students, their approval of correlative subjects during Electric Machinery s term, and better performances in the first available dates for the subject s final exam. Although engineering clubs have existed for some time, engineering has not been a formal part of the classroom experience for every student. The promise that engineering has for engaging students in precollege is considerable when it is defined as systematic problem solving for global issues such as those defined by the US National Academy of Engineering s (NAE) Grand Challenges for Engineering, and not focused primarily on careers. Engineering as it applies to ALL students can be defined as understanding engineering design and problem solving, adopting engineering habits of mind and comprehending systems thinking. In the state of North Carolina in the US, several secondary schools are using the NAE Grand Challenges as the basis for an integrated STEM curriculum. Using the Grand Challenges as a curriculum framework, teachers identify the Challenges that most closely align with the science course taught in a given year. A successful orientation introduces students to their department and to university studies, providing important information and assisting the students in making friends and acclimatising to the university lifestyle. The university of XXXX has trialled the OrientHunt - a scavenger hunt intended to deliver information to students through the active learning environment of a campus-wide roaming team-based activity. This paper details the outcomes of the first implementation of the OrientHunt. It provides a report of the students exit survey responses. The students believe the scavenger hunt was successful in its objectives of preparing them for transition as well as providing social opportunities for meeting other students; they also feltthat a range of communication and teamwork skills had been improved by the experience. Con la intención de acompañar el proceso de enseñanza- aprendizaje dentro de la Facultad Regional Santa Fe se han generado dispositivos destinados al alumno. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo evaluar los resultados obtenidos y su incidencia en los indicadores de deserción y desgranamiento. Para ello se evaluará el desempeño académico, durante el ciclo 2011, de los alumnos de las carreras de ingeniería, determinando las variables intervinientes, definiendo indicadores de desempeño y analizando su comportamiento. Esto permitirá conocer la efectividad del dispositivo implementado. Estas acciones se materializan desde un trabajo en conjunto, donde cada integrante aporta desde su experiencia, genera andamiajes diversos y ajustados a cada nivel y especialidad posibilitando contribuir en la retención y reducción de la cronicidad. The educational quality in the academic level must be conceived as a permanent and internal construction of an educational community that assess itself in order to generate strategies and actions to its improvement. With the intention to escort the teaching-learning process, the Santa Fe Regional Faculty has implemented a procedure orientated to the students. This work has the objective to evaluate the results and its incidence in the defection indicators. In order to achieve this objective, will be evaluate the academic performance of students during 2011 in the careers of engineering, determining the different variables, defining performance indicators and analyzing its demeanor. This will permit to know the effectiveness of the implemented methodology. These actions will be implemented through a joint work where each member brings from their own experience in order to generate different contributions adapted to each level and specialty giving the opportunity to contribute in the retention and in the reduction of the chronicity. 22 92 PROPUESTA DE MODELO PEDAGÓGICO PARA LA ENSEÑANZA DE LA INGENIERÍA CHIODI, GUSTAVO ALBERTO 1 gchiodi@gmail.com Al ser la Ingeniería quien tiene por misión diseñar, implementar y gestionar las tecnologías, se constató que existe una brecha entre el mundo productivo y la formación del ingeniero. Esta brecha continúa ampliándose en la medida que los avances tecno-científicos siguen desarrollándose. También se verificó las diferencias entre lo que cada actor, interno y externo al proceso educativo de la enseñanza de la Ingeniería espera uno del otro poniendo en evidencia la problemática sobre vocación, deserción y extensión en la graduación. El modelo pedagógico propuesto, como intento de encontrar una solución a esta realidad se estructura desde tres dimensiones. Una dimensión antropológica apoyada en la corriente de pensamiento personalista y la visión psicológica del aprendizaje. Una dimensión teleológica para dar respuesta a: para qué una Ingeniería?, para qué estudiar ingeniería? Una dimensión metodológica para dar respuesta a: cómo debería ser un modelo pedagógico para la enseñanza de la Ingeniería? This gap continues to widen as far as techno-scientific advances continue to develop. We also observed differences between what each actor, internal and external to the education of the teaching of engineering expected from one another by highlighting the issue of vocation, dropout and graduation extension. The pedagogical model proposed in an attempt to find a solution to this reality is structured on three dimensions. An anthropological dimension supported by the current of thought and vision personalistic psychology of learning. A teleological dimension to answer: why an engineering?, why study engineering?. A methodological dimension to answer: What should be a pedagogical model for engineering education? Se ha analizado la situación de la FRD de la UTN en su relación con propuestas metodológicas, modelos de aprendizajes, estilos docentes y se han buscado formas de gestión de la permanencia. Se ha analizado la existencia de relaciones entre las Escuelas de procedencia de los ingresantes a las clases de grado de la facultad y se ha tratado y trata de mejorar la articulación de los mismos sumando acuerdos y estrategias de acercamiento. La cuestión operativa y su desarrollo académico se han visto enriquecidos en su desarrollo metodológico adoptando un estilo multiperspectivo; indagando las condiciones previas que imposibilitan a aspirantes el acceso o limitan la aprobación del curso propedéutico y su avance en el grado, con un desgranamiento compatible con su situación personal. In this work we aboard the problematic of the access, the permanence at the University and the didactic strategies for a global analysis of the question. We have analyzed the situation of the FRD at the UTN related to methodological proposals, learning models, teaching styles and we have looked for ways of permanency management. We have analyzed the existence of relations between the entrant s schools of origin and we have tried to improve the articulation of them adding arrangements and approaching strategies. The operative question and its academic development have been enriched in its methodological development adopting a multidisciplinary style, investigating the previous conditions that prevent entrants from accessing or limit them from passing the propedeutic course and their advance in the grade with a shelling compatible with their personal situation. 24 101 ESTUDIO DEL EFECTO DE UNA EVALUACIÓN CONTINUA SOBRE LA RETENCIÓN Y EL RENDIMIENTO DE ESTUDIANTES DE UN CURSO DE FÍSICA DEL PRIMER AÑO DE INGENIERÍA EN SISTEMAS DE INFORMACIÓN ROSAS, PATRICIA ALEJANDRA 1 ; RODRÍGUEZ, MIGUEL ÁNGEL 1 ; BRITCH, JAVIER 1 simbazarel@hotmail.com; migueltabasco@yahoo.com.ar; javierbritch@hotmail.com Durante el ciclo lectivo 2011 se realizó una evaluación continua en un curso de primer año de la asignatura anual Física I de la carrera de Ingeniería en Sistemas de Información que se dicta en la Universidad Tecnológica Nacional Facultad Regional Córdoba. Esta evaluación continua consistió en un breve cuestionario que se realiza al finalizar cada una de las clases teórico prácticas. Con un total anual de quince evaluaciones continuas y dos evaluaciones parciales cuatrimestrales se compararon la retención y el rendimiento de este curso con los correspondientes a los años 2008, 2009 y 2010 del mismo turno, docente, programa y carrera. Se observó que la evaluación continua mejoró la retención en valores relativos y el rendimiento en valores absolutos. En este trabajo se exponen los resultados de la experiencia. All school year round 2011 was carried out a continuous evaluation at the first year of the annual course Physics I of Information Systems Engineering, that is held in the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional Facultad Regional Córdoba. This continuous evaluation consisted on a brief questionnaire that takes place at the end of each theoretical and practical classes. With an annual total of fifteen continuous evaluation and two quarterly partial evaluations, it was compared the retention and the yield of this course with the corresponding for the years 2008, 2009 and 2010 the same turn, teaching, program and career.
