1 FAMILY BULETIN/BOLETIN FAMILIAR Letter from your School Leader SEPTEMBR 2014 Dear Families: Can you believe that the first three weeks (five weeks if you include summer school) is already over? The time has gone by so quickly! I see so much learning going on every day as I walk through the hallways, and I have noticed that the eighth graders seem to be turning into teenagers and the fifth graders are becoming real middle school students. This past Saturday, September 6 th we held our first parent meeting, and through this letter I would like to cordially invite all parents who wish to learn more about the school and ways to support their children and teachers, that our next parent meeting will take place on October 4 th from 8:15-9:15. I wanted to congratulate our athletes who are representing KIPP Aspire this year in soccer (coed) and our girls volleyball team this fall. They are being led by our coaches, Ms. Laura Khalil in volleyball, Coach Jack Lynch and Mr. Matthew Boubel who lead our soccer team. Best of luck this fall KIPPsters! Our athletes and coaches would definitely appreciate any support parents can offer during our games helping in the soccer field or in the gym selling snacks or helping to set up the gym. The first round of MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing is under way and once again this is another opportunity for our teachers to determine how best to provide tutoring for our KIPPsters after reviewing the results in reading, math, science and grammar. The students take these tests three times during the school year and results are provided to parents upon request, or during our parent conferences. MAP testing has proven to be a much better indicator of college readiness in terms of measuring growth over time for our students than the actual STAAR tests. I would like to remind parents that progress reports are sent home with their children during the week of September 15 th. We ask that parents sign the reports as a way of confirming that they have received them. These reports are sent home every three weeks during the year and are a way for our teachers to inform parents of their children s progress. Please keep in mind that the purpose of these reports is to maintain a culture of open communication between teachers and our parents. Teachers look forward to answering questions from parents in order to improve student achievement and prepare our KIPPsters for college. Finally, I am proud to announce that during the month of September KIPP Aspire will be offering parents access online to their children s academic progress through the Parent Portal. Information will be coming. Once again, it is my pleasure to welcome our parents and extended families to feel free to contact our office, teachers and administrators with any questions concerning their children s progress or school related issues this year. 2 FAMILY BULETIN/BOLETIN FAMILIAR Carta del Director SEPTEMBR 2014 Familias, Puedes creer que las tres primeras semanas (cinco semanas si usted incluye la escuela de verano) ya ha terminado? El tiempo ha pasado tan rápido! Veo mucho aprendizaje pasando todos los días mientras camino por los pasillos, y me he dado cuenta de que los estudiantes de octavo grado parecen estar convirtiéndose en adolescentes y los niños de quinto grado se están convirtiendo en los estudiantes de secundaria. El sábado pasado, 6 de septiembre celebramos nuestra primera reunión con los padres, y por medio de esta carta me gustaría invitar cordialmente a todos los padres que desean aprender más sobre la escuela y la manera de apoyar a sus hijos y los maestros a nuestra próxima reunión de padres que será el 4 de octubre a las 8:15am 9:15am. Quería felicitar a nuestros atletas que representan a KIPP Aspire este año en el equipo de fútbol (mixto) y el voleibol de nuestras niñas este otoño. Ellos son guiados por nuestros entrenadores, la Sr. Laura Khalil en el voleibol, el entrenador Jack Lynch y el Sr. Matthew Boubel llevan nuestro equipo de fútbol. Mucha suerte alumnos de KIPP! Nuestros atletas y entrenadores agradecerían cualquier padre quien quiera ofrecer su apoyo durante los juegos, que ayudan en el campo de fútbol o en el gimnasio vendiendo bocadillos o ayudando a establecer el gimnasio. La primera ronda del MAP (Medidas de Progreso Académico) prueba está en curso y una vez más, esta es otra oportunidad para que nuestros maestros pueden determinar la mejor manera de proporcionar tutoría para nuestros alumnos de KIPP después de revisar los resultados en lectura, matemáticas, ciencias y gramática. Los estudiantes toman estas pruebas tres veces durante el año escolar y los resultados se proporcionan a los padres a petición, o durante nuestras reuniones con los padres. Pruebas MAP ha demostrado ser un indicador mucho mejor de preparación para la universidad en términos de medición de crecimiento para nuestros estudiantes que las pruebas del estado de Texas STAAR. Quisiera recordar a los padres que los reportes de progreso son enviados a casa con sus hijos durante la semana del 15 de septiembre. Pedimos que los padres firmen los reportes como una forma de confirmar que los han recibido. Estos reportes son enviados a casa cada tres semanas durante el año y son una manera para que los maestros informan a los padres del progreso de sus hijos. Por favor, tenga en cuenta que el propósito de estos reportes es tener una cultura de comunicación abierta entre los maestros y los padres. Los maestros esperan responder a las preguntas de los padres con el fin de mejorar los logros estudiantil y preparar a nuestros estudiantes de KIPP para la universidad. Por último, estoy orgulloso de anunciar que durante el mes de septiembre KIPP Aspire estará ofreciendo a los padres acceso en línea al progreso académico de sus hijos a través del Portal de Padres. Información vendrá pronto. Una vez más, es un placer darle la bienvenida a nuestros padres y familias; no dude en ponerse en comunicación con nuestras oficinas, los maestros y administradores para cualquier pregunta sobre el progreso de sus hijos o temas relacionados de KIPP este año.

3 Meet Your 6th Grade Teachers Work hard. Be nice. Paula Salas Ms. Salas teaches 6 th grade Nonfiction Studies and is the 6 th grade Team leader. She was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. She graduated from The University of Texas at San Antonio and is currently attending Trinity University for her masters degree in educational leadership. This is her 6 th year at KIPP Aspire. Kim Libby Kim Libby is the 6th grade math teacher at KIPP Aspire and was raised in south Florida. She attended the University of Florida (Go Gators!) where she studied journalism and linguistics. She has taught math, science, social studies and college prep in San Antonio for the past few years and absolutely loves KIPP! Ms. Libby is excited to see her students grow in math this year and is willing to do whatever it takes to help them succeed. Lauren Stapley Hello! My name is Lauren Stapley and I am your 6th grade reading teacher. I attended college at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas where I studied literature and writing, but I was born and raised right here in San Antonio Texas and am proud and thrilled to have the privilege of teaching your students. I look forward to meeting each of you throughout the year. Please don't hesitate to reach out! Martha Muñoz Hi! I teach 6th grade Science. I studied Animal Science in Universidad Nacional de Colombia. I obtained a specialist degree in Intellectual development and Education in The Universidad Santiago de Cali and later got a Masters degree in Education and Supervision at Western Carolina University. 4 Maestras del Sexto Grado Paula Salas Sra. Salas es la maestra de Los Estudios de Non Ficción y el líder de los maestras del sexto grado. Sra. Salas nació y se crió en San Antonio, TX. Se asisto a la Universidad de Texas en San Antonio y actualmente, esta tomando clases en Trinity University para obtener su maestría en Liderazgo Educativo. Este es su sexto año en KIPP Aspire. Kim Libby Sra. Libby es la maestra de matemáticas del sexto grado. Ella se crio en Florida y asistió a la Universidad de Florida, donde se estudió Periodismo y Lingüística. Ella enseñó matemáticas, ciencias y estudios sociales en San Antonio por varios años y le encanta estar aquí en KIPP Aspire. Sra. Libby esta emocionada de ver a sus estudiantes crecer y avanzar en matemáticas. Ella esta dispuesta hacer lo que sea para que sus estudiantes sean exitosos. Lauren Stapley Hola. Mi nombre es Lauren Stapley y soy la maestra de Lectura del sexto grado. Me asistí a John Brown University en Siloam Springs, Arkansas donde estudie Literatura y Escritura. 5 Counselor s Corner We ve had a wonderful start to the new school year. I am happy to announce that the student s and I are enjoying our Group Lunches; where 4-5 student s come to the counselors office during their lunch blocks. This is a time to discuss personal issues, conduct group activities and to have a relaxing and fun break together. I am enjoying getting to know your children and supporting them when needed. We successfully completed our first ASTRA meeting this past Saturday. Congratulations to Miss. Samantha Duran Ramos (8th grader) who was elected as Secretary and Miss. Jimena Hernandez (8th grader) who was elected as Treasurer by their peers during our first meeting. Participants of ASTRA who would like a T-Shirt can submit $10.00 to me and the money will be handed our to our treasurer for purchase. ASTRA will have some upcoming events, so please stay connected with us through our bulletin or by phone. Ms. Cerna Counselor El Rincón de la Consejera Hemos tenido un maravilloso comienzo del año escolar. Me siento feliz de anunciar que los estudiantes y yo nos estamos divirtiendo en nuestras juntas de medio día; donde cuatro o cinco estudiantes llegan al oficina de la consejera durante la hora de comida. Este tiempo es designado para discutir temas personales, facilitar actividades con el grupo y sobre todo tener un tiempo tranquilo y relajado. Aprovecho del tiempo para conocer a sus hijos un poco mas y dar mi apoyo cuando es necesario. Este sábado pasado, la reunión de ASTRA fue muy productivo. Felicidades a la Srta. Samantha Duran Ramos (estudiante del octavo grado) quien fue elegida Secretaria y a la Srta. Jimena Hernandez (estudiante del octavo grado) quien fue elegida Tesorera por los compañeros de ASTRA. Participantes de este club quien quiera una camiseta de ASTRA necesitan entregar $10.00 a mi y luego entregare el dinero al tesorera para compra. ASTRA tendrá eventos de pronto, así que por favor estén en comunicación con nosotros a través de el boletín familiar o de teléfono.
