2 2 1. RATIONALE Spanish 370: Caribbean Culture and Literature in the XX and XXI Centuries st course has been offered in recent semesters as a topics course (Spanish 320: Topics in Hispanic Culture). Spanish 370 would allow students who have completed one of our lower 300 level courses (312, 317 or 318) to enroll in this culture course where they would continue to develop their reading comprehension, listening and speaking skills. In addition, Spanish 370 would provide students in the major and also in the Spanish Business Minor a historical and cultural overview of the Caribbean region as a whole but with a particular emphasis on its Spanish-speaking areas. After offering Caribbean Culture and Literature three times before, the Spanish program wishes to make the course a permanent offering that can be scheduled on a regular basis. This course would become part of our regular offerings in culture (along with Spanish 315: Culture and Civilization of Spain; and Spanish 320: Topics in Hispanic Culture), providing a course that focuses on a region that is strikingly different from the rest of Latin America. This course is particularly needed because Spanish 316: Culture and Civilization of Latin America has been offered infrequently in recent years. It is the belief of the Spanish section that courses such as this one that concentrate on a particular region or topic of Latin American culture are more beneficial for students. Spanish 370 approaches the complex multicultural diversity of the Caribbean from a postcolonial perspective. It traces how the history of the Caribbean brought together diverse native and immigrant groups from other parts of the world to create an exceptional culture in the Americas. The course allows students to discover the multifaceted culture of the Caribbean through the study of its material and spiritual belief systems, literature, myths and legends. The course readings are based on cultural and postcolonial studies on the Caribbean as well as literature from some of its most prominent authors, including three Nobel laureates. The course is conducted entirely in Spanish; readings are in the target language.

IMPACT STATEMENT FOR SPANISH 370 There would be no library, space, budget, or technology impacts created by adding this new course, as it has already been taught three times, and is the specialty of two of our colleagues such that resources dedicated to this topics (books on the Caribbean for the library for example) have already been a part of our regular acquisitions and budgeting.

Course description: This course proposes to explore the complex and multicultural diversity of the literature and culture of the Caribbean from a post-colonial perspective. The history of the Caribbean stands out for its exceptional confluence of diverse native groups and groups from other parts of the world. The course will permit students to discover the fascinating and multi-faceted culture of the Caribbean, the richness of its material and spiritual world, its literature, its myths, legends and religions. Of particular interest are its thinkers, writers, and artists who have re-written history in search of their own identity viewed from an anti-colonial and post-colonial perspective. The effects of colonial history in contemporary life are also presented. The course is based on cultural and post-colonial studies of the Caribbean underscoring the cultural importance of this small corner of the world, which is distinguished by various international prizes, among them the Nobel Prize, including three Nobel prizes for literature. Main Objectives: The main objective of this course is the study of the culture and literature of the Caribbean in the 20th and 21st centuries, with a critical analysis of its diverse and heterogeneous cultural identity, a study of the many of silenced or little-known Caribbean voices, and an analysis of various cultural themes based in contemporary criticism. The course utilizes a methodology that traces the different traditions of the Caribbean islands and mainland (Spanish, French, British and Dutch). We will study literature by representative authors. Of special interest are the similarities, contrasts and differences that form the plurality of Caribbean cultural identity and their unique importance in the Latin American context and in the African diaspora. Students will work in research teams guided by the professor as they investigate a topic that later they will present and discuss in class. This course is conceived as a sort of laboratory in which students experience the research process in search of material to present to the class. Students are evaluated on short essays divided by thematic units, quizzes, and a research project leading to a final essay.

5 Requirements for enrollment in this course: Spanish 370 has as its prerequisite one of the following: Spanish 312, Spanish 317, Spanish 318 or the permission of the instructor. 5 This course is entirely in Spanish: Throughout the class, only Spanish will be spoken, by the professor as well as the students in their oral activities and presentations. Student participation will develop these skills progressively and students will be evaluated systematically, at the end of which there should be a substantial increase and Participation and Attendance: or this reason, oral activities will be assessed in each class, and will be weighted heavily in mid-term and final evaluations of participation for the course. Punctuality and attendance are an essential part of the development of student abilities and fu development in the class. Honor Code: A basic requirement of Spanish 370 is that each student handing in the required work must have completed it individually by her/his own effort and without help. Receiving help from outside sources such as translation software, copying, etc. constitutes a violation of the Honor Code. Outside sources means sources other than designated textbooks or other material provided by the professor for specific assignments. From time to time, students may be assigned to work with classmates in groups and will be encouraged to collaborate as instructed. Specific assignments will also require students to complete research with outside sources; for example to gather information from a website on the Internet, consult scholarly articles or books, or to conduct interviews with people with specific expertise. In such cases, outside sources will be permitted as mentioned explicitly in the description and instructions that accompany the assignments. Students will research a topic relevant to the culture of the Caribbean in the 20th and /or 21st century. The presentation will be a colloquium in which the student will present information gathered through their research. This project will be constructed throughout the course, and will be completed in various stages to be announced later. Students will turn in a printed copy and an electronic copy of the presentation to the professor.. 30%. Individual Final Essay. The final essay will be 15 pages in length, in addition to a bibliography citing sources from books, or printed or electronic articles. The essay will use the MLA format. Descripción general: El curso propone un acercamiento a la compleja diversidad multicultural de la literatura y la cultura del Caribe desde una perspectiva postcolonial. Se destaca cómo la historia del Caribe ha generado la confluencia de diverso grupos humanos nativos y llegados de diferentes partes del mundo que han creado una región excepcional en las Américas y el mundo. El curso permite que los alumnos descubran el fascinante y polifacético mundo cultural del Caribe, la riqueza de su mundo material y espiritual, su literatura, así como sus mitos, leyendas y religiones. Se destaca el interés de sus pensadores, escritores y artistas en hacer una reescritura de la historia caribeña en busca de su identidad con una perspectiva anticolonial y postcolonialista. Se presenta cómo repercute la historia colonial en la vida contemporánea. El curso se basa en estudios cultorológicos y postcoloniales sobre el Caribe que sustentan la importancia cultural de esta pequeña región del orbe que ha sido distinguida por varios premios de relevancia mundial entre ellos varios Premio Nobel, y destacan particularmente sus tres Premio Nobel de Literatura. Objetivos principales: El principal objetivo del curso es la cultura y la literatura del Caribe de los siglos XX y XXI, estudiando de forma crítica y analítica su diversa y heterogénea identidad cultural, así como muchas de sus voces silenciadas o poco conocidas, y las especificidades de su multiculturalidad, analizando los temas a partir de conceptos de la crítica contemporánea. El curso utiliza una ruta metodológica que transita por las diferentes áreas del Caribe insular y continental (hispano, francés, anglo y holandés). Se estudiará la literatura de autores representativos. Son de interés las similitudes, los contrastes y las diferencias que conforman la pluralidad de la identidad cultural caribeña y su importancia sui generis en el contexto latinoamericano y en la diáspora africana. Los alumnos trabajarán en equipo para seminarios de investigación guiados por el profesor en los que investigarán sobre un tema que después presentan y se discute en la clase. Este curso se concibe como un laboratorio experimental en que los alumnos se encuentran en un constante proceso de investigación en busca de resultados que presentan a la clase. La evaluación contempla ensayos breves de cada ciclo temático, pruebitas, exámenes, y un proyecto de investigación para el ensayo final. Requisitos para inscribirse en el curso:
