1 23 July 2012 Hotel Tourism Short-Term Trends (HOS/HPI/IPHS) June Overnight stays in hotel establishments decrease 1.3% in June, as compared with the same month in 2011 Hotels earn 41.7 euros per available room and invoice an average of 68.4 euros per occupied room During the month of June, 30.3 million overnight stays were recorded in hotel establishments, indicating a 1.3% decrease as compared with the same month in Overnight stays for residents decreases 8.9%, while for non-residents experienced an increase of 2.8%. The average stay increased 1.1% as compared with June 2011, standing at 3.5 nights per guest. During the first six months of the year, overnight decreased 1.4% as compared with the same period in In turn, the Hotel Price Index (HPI) registered a 0.6% increase in June. Regarding the indicators on the profitability of the hotel sector, invoicing per occupied room reached an average value of 68.4 euros, and income per available room stood at 41.7 euros. In terms of occupancy, 57.9% of the available bedplaces were filled in May, indicating a 1.6% decrease as compared with the same month the previous year. 2 Overnight stays of guests resident abroad Guests from the United Kingdom and Germany registered rates of 28.8% and 26.4%, respectively, of the total overnight stays by foreign nationals in June. The British market experienced a 11.2% increase, while the German market experienced a 3.0% interannual decrease in overnight stays. Overnight stays of guests from Russia, France and Italy (the following countries of origin) registered interannual rates of 27.5 %, -12.0% and -17.8% respectively. In this Autonomous Community, overnight stays by foreign nationals increased 3.4% as compared with June It was followed by Cataluña, with an interannual rate of 0.7%, and Canarias, with an increase of 4.2%. Andalucía, Comunitat Valenciana and Cataluña were the main destinations of guests resident in Spain, with interannual rates for overnight stays of 12.5%, 3.6% and 12.6%, respectively. 3 Results by Autonomous Community, tourist area and tourist site During the month of June, Illes Balears was the Autonomous Community with the highest occupancy rate by bedplaces (81.0%), followed by Canarias (64.7%) and Cataluña (61.8%). The tourist areas with the highest occupancy and overnight stay rates were located on the islands and the coasts. The zone of Mallorca-Calvià recorded the highest occupancy rate by bedplaces (84.1%) and the highest weekend occupancy rate by bedplaces (85.5%). Mallorca registered more than 6.4 million overnight stays in June. The tourist sites with the highest number of overnight stays were Barcelona, Calvià and Madrid. Alcùdia reached the highest occupancy rate by bedplaces (89.4%), whereas Santa Margalida reached the highest weekend occupancy (92.0%). Evolution of the Hotel Price Index The interannual rate of the HPI stood at 0.6% in June, this rate being 1.3 points higher than that obtained last month, and 0.4 points that registered one year ago. 4 HPI Interannual variation rate Jun-11 Jul-11 Aug-11 Sep-11 Oct-11 Nov-11 Dec-11 Jan-12 Feb-12 Mar-12 Apr-12 May-12 Jun-12 HPI by Autonomous Community The four Communities (Illes Balears, Cataluña, Andalucía and Canarias) that carried 71.3% of the total weight of the HPI in the month of June, showed uneven behaviour. Illes Balears, which carried the greatest load in the weighting structure this month, presented an interannual rate of 6.4%, that is, 4.7 points higher than that estimated in May. Hotel prices experienced a decrease of 0.3% in Cataluña, as compared with the increase of 0.3% of the previous month. In Andalucía, the interannual variation was 1.4%, as compared with the 2.2%, observed last month. Canarias presented an interannual variation of 1.6%, that is, 0.6 points less than May. 3

4 HPI by category Hotel prices increased in two-gold-star hotels (3.0%), five-gold-star hotels (2.4%), three-goldstar hotels (2.3%) and one-silver-star (0.3%) in June. The other category presented a decrease in the interannual rate: one-gold-star hotels ( 2.3%), four-gold-star ( 0.9%) and three and two-silver-star ( 0.7%). Indicators on the Profitability of the Hotel Sector The average invoicing by hotels per occupied room (ADR) in June was 68.4 euros, indicating an increase of 1.9 euros as compared with the same month in In turn, income per available room (RevPAR), conditioned by the occupancy registered in the hotel establishments, reached 41.7 euros, with an increase of 0.4 euros as compared with June By category, the average invoicing was euros for five-star hotels, 75.3 euros for fourstar hotels and 55.8 euros for three-star hotels. Income per available room for these same categories was 97.8, 52.8 and 37.9 euros, respectively.
