1 Broadcast 6: THE CALENDAR OBJETIVOS This lesson will help you to: learn the days, months, and seasons express calendar dates sequence events learn vocabulary for making appointments OPENING VIDEO Cómo Hacer Una Cita Spanish for Educators, Level 1, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999,
2 Spanish for Educators, Level 1, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, Conjugación de Verbos A verb form that ends in -r, called the infinitive, is used when a Spanish verb is cited in a list like the one below. This form is used for this purpose because it contains most of the information that you need to recognize other forms of the same verb. Verbos comenzar enseñar esperar hacer llegar necesitar poder querer salir terminar venir to begin to teach to expect; wait; hope to do; to make to arrive to need to be able (can) to want to go out to end to come Endings for the Present Tense In the present tense, the tense we will concentrate on in this course, verbs used to talk about yourself end in -o. Verbs used to talk about a person other than yourself, or to talk directly to someone in a formal context, such as a parent, end in either -a or -e. The infinitive tells you which of the two endings you need. If the infinitive ends in -ar, you need an -a to talk to or about one person. If the infinitive ends in -er or -ir, you need an -e to talk to or about one person. Three other endings may follow the -a or the -e. An -n is used to talk about two or more persons other than yourself, or to talk directly to someone in a formal context, such as two parents. An -s is used to talk directly to a person in an informal context, such as a student. Finally, -mos is used to talk about a group that includes yourself, such as your class or your family. Every verb form in Spanish has a stem and an ending. The stem can be determined from the infinitive; the endings for the infinitive are -ar, -er, and -ir. The stem is everything that goes before the ending For regular verbs, the stem doesn t change. You will notice some irregular verbs that have unpredictable changes in their stems. You will get used to them as you hear and use them.

4 Spanish for Educators, Level 1, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, (This page intentionally left blank.)
5 Actividad 1: Verbos y Preguntas Take note of the different endings of verbs you need for the following situations. At the same time you can practice your question skills. Ejemplo: Ask a parent when her child comes to school. -- Cuándo viene su niño a la escuela? OR -- A qué hora viene a la escuela? 3. If you were a recently hired teacher, how would you ask what time you need to arrive at school? How would you ask what time the students arrive? Ask when all the children come to school. -- Cuándo vienen los niños a la escuela? OR -- A qué hora vienen a la escuela? 1. Ask what time classes begin. Ask what time the school day begins. 2. How would you ask a parent (formal) what they need? How would you ask a child (informal), what they need? Chaining Verbs Together If you make a verb phrase from two or more verbs, only the first verb needs an ending like the ones you have just observed; the second verb takes the form of an infinitive which ends in -r. El Señor Brown quiere enseñar trigonometría. La profesora necesita llegar a las siete. Podría usted venir a la escuela? Spanish for Educators, Level 1, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999,
