RESUMEN DEL PROYECTO Entorno de aplicación y objetivos La aparición de los hedge funds en el mercado financiero se ha convertido en un hito en la evolución de los fondos de inversión. Su modelo de gestión alternativa y su independencia frente a la evolución del mercado les ha supuesto un éxito tal que ya superan el billón de dólares en activos gestionados. En EEUU y Reino Unido los hedge funds acumulan más de 25 años de enorme protagonismo en los mercados financieros. La reciente regulación en España de este tipo de fondos ha suscitado una gran expectación. Sin embargo, la escasa regulación a la que están sometidos, los riesgos sistemáticos asociados y sus altas inversiones mínimas complican mucho la entrada de los inversores minoristas a estos fondos de inversión. El acceso de esta clase de inversores se realiza a través de los fondos de hedge funds. Son vehículos que permiten el acceso a una cartera de hedge funds que se seleccionan por una gestora especializada de modo que la cartera elaborada se adecue al nivel rentabilidad/riesgo que se quiera asumir. Se busca la diversificación de estrategias, así se consigue ofrecer un riesgo bajo/medio a los partícipes respecto al riesgo medio/alto y muy alto que soportan los inversores en single funds. Los métodos cuantitativos de análisis de fondos toman una importancia vital en la selección de los subyacentes de una cartera de hedge funds. La gran variedad de estrategias que siguen los diferentes hedge funds unida a su obtención de rentabilidades de forma independiente al mercado, favorecen el uso de técnicas estadísticas y modelización matemática para la evaluación del rendimiento del fondo. Asimismo, es básica la elaboración de una base de datos propia que contenga la información necesaria

2 sobre aquellos fondos susceptibles de entrar a formar parte de la cartera, también llamados el universo de fondos. Los recursos informáticos y computacionales son una pieza clave en el proceso de selección. De hecho, la posibilidad de disponer de una herramienta de software personalizada que gestione toda la información del universo de fondos y realizar todos los análisis cuantitativos necesarios para la evaluación de los fondos, le daría una ventaja competitiva importante frente a otras gestoras. Aumenta su eficacia en el proceso de selección, incrementa la confianza de sus inversores y dota a la gestora de criterios propios y fiables de selección. Estructura de la herramienta Hedge Lab es la herramienta para el análisis cuantitativo desarrollada por Apeiron, la gestora de fondos de hedge funds de la boutique financiera N+1. Podemos estructurar la herramienta en tres partes: Universo de fondos: Compuesto por más de 100 fondos preseleccionados por la gestora. Contendrá información general del fondo así como su rendimiento desde su inicio. La base de datos está gestionada en Microsoft SQL Server. Este universo de fondos debe estar en constante actualización y mantenimiento y toda la información contenida en el mismo deberá ser veraz. Herramienta computacional: Todos los cálculos han sido desarrollados en Matlab. Incluye tablas de estadísticos, menú de gráficos, simulaciones de mercado y optimizaciones. Mediante una llamada a la base de datos recibe automáticamente todos los datos que necesita para cada función de la herramienta. Una vez realizados los cálculos, devolverá los resultados directamente a la interfaz gráfica. Interfaz gráfica e implementación en página Web: Gracias al trabajo de una empresa diseñadora de páginas Web se ha conseguido un diseño innovador y que permite una navegación sencilla. El hecho de poder tener acceso a la herramienta a través de Internet es una de las grandes ventajas de la herramienta. Se podrá utilizar en cualquier ordenador y se podrá dar acceso a los clientes a ciertas funciones de análisis cuantitativo de aquellos fondos en los que están invertidos.

3 Este proyecto fin de carrera se ha concentrado principalmente en el desarrollo de la herramienta computacional. Obtención de medidas estadísticas fiables, representaciones gráficas correctas y desarrollo e implementación de estudios de simulación y optimización más complejos. Los componentes de análisis cuantitativo de la herramienta se dividen entre aquellas funciones de análisis de single funds y aquellas funciones para el análisis de fund of funds. En primer lugar, un estudio individualizado del hedge fund Alphagen Capella. Posteriormente, se realizará un estudio pormenorizado del fondo de fondos N+1 Gestión Alternativa, uno de los productos ofrecidos por la gestora Apeiron a sus clientes.

4 Summary Environment and objectives The arrival of the hedge fund asset class has meant a significant milestone and a revolution in the asset management industry. Their alternative way of managing funds offering the possibility of obtaining positive absolute returns regardless of the underlying markets trends have led them to raise over one trillion dollars in assets. In countries such as the USA or the United Kingdom, hedge funds gather more than 25 years of experience as a prominent financial investment. The very recent regulation of this kind of financial instruments by the Spanish Securities and Exchange Commission (CNMV) has raised great expectations in this country. However, the limited regulation applicable to hedge funds, the existence of high systematic risks and the requirement of high minimum initial investments make it difficult for small investors to access these funds. This kind of investor has an alternative way to access hedge funds; they can invest in funds of funds. These vehicles consist of a portfolio of single hedge funds built by a specialized fund manger so that it complies with the level of risk and return desired by the client. A fund of hedge funds will be diversified between strategies. Thus, a well balanced portfolio may offer a medium-low risk investment opportunity, compared to the high systematic risks that the investment in single funds represents. Quantitative analysis methods have a vital importance in the process of selection of the single funds in which the portfolio will invest. The wide variety of strategies that different hedge funds use, together with the uncorrelated nature of their returns with respect to the market in which they invest favour the use of statistical techniques and mathematical models for the evaluation of the performance of these funds. Moreover, it is essential to manage a self made database with the necessary information about the funds in which the manager is interested, usually called the universe of funds. Hardware and software computing resources are key in the process of building a portfolio. In fact, the development of a proprietary software tool that manages all the information of the universe of funds and carries out all the quantitative analysis necessary for their evaluation, would give the manager a very important competitive advantage. Increasing the efficiency of the tasks related to the management of a fund of

5 funds will provide the manager with genuine and trustworthy criteria. Additionally, it will reassure the confidence its investor client base. Structure of the quantitative tool Hedge Lab is the quantitative analysis tool developed by Apeiron, the fund of hedge funds manager of N+1, a financial boutique based in Spain. As a result of the inner structure of the software tool and the organization of the external graphical interface it can be divided into three different parts: Universe of funds: Made up of around one hundred funds selected by the manager. It will contain general information of the fund as well as performance data since its inception. This database will work in a Microsoft SQL Server environment. The universe of funds should be properly and constantly maintained and the information contained on it must have no errors. Computing tool: All the computing programming has been developed using Matlab software. It includes statistics tables, a charts menu, market simulations and portfolio optimizations. All the functions included in this part are fed from the database and deliver their results either directly to the graphical interface. Graphical interface and web page implementation: Thanks to the services of a web page design company, the tool has reached a highly innovating design and a user friendly interface. The use of the tool hardly needs any training. The user will just be required to have a financial background and advanced investment funds management knowledge. The fact of having Internet access to the tool is one of the main advantages of this software. Fund managers and analysts will be able to make use of the tool from any computer, and clients may be given access to analyse those funds and portfolios in which they are investing.

6 This final project has been mainly focussed on the development of the computing tool. The main tasks related to the project have been to obtain trustworthy statistics, the representation of data in a comprehensive way and developing and the implementation of the complex optimizations and simulations. However, the three different sections of the tool have to be connected. Therefore, this project also deals with some other issues that are part of other sections. The components of the computing analysis tool are divided in functions that may be used for both single funds and fund of funds. The first example analyses the single manager hedge fund Alphagen Capella. The second example is the N+1 Gestión Alternativa fund of funds, which is one of the products that the fund manager Apeiron offers to its clients.
