1 28 COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES - BETTER AND BEST COMPARATIVES In English we have two ways of making comparatives with adjectives. Either we use 'more'... Paris is more beautiful than Moscow or we add 'er' to the end of the adjective... John is faster than Conor. In Spanish we can only do it the first way, and we use 'más' - more, with the word 'que' Paris es más bonito que Moscú. John es más rápido que Conor. We also use 'menos que' to mean 'less than'. Yo soy menos inteligente que mi hermano. There are some adjectives that have irregular comparatives. bueno (good) - mejor (better) malo (bad) - peor (worse) grande (big) - mayor (bigger, older) pequeño (small) - menor (smaller, younger) (for size of an object, person or country, when we use 'grande', or 'pequeño', the comparative is 'más grande' or 'más pequeño'.) eg. Mi hermano menor tiene ocho años - my younger brother is eight. Yo soy un buen jugador de fútbol, pero mi amigo Carlos es mejor - I'm a good football player but my friend Carlos is better. London es más grande que Dublin. Put the correct comparative adjective into the spaces...(be careful, in some you may have to put in the word 'que') Eg. Yo soy más alto que mi padre. (alto) - José es que Carlos. (alto) - Rusia es España. (grande) - Carla es su hermana. (inteligente) - Julia es su amiga Helena. (guapo) - Los Andes son que los Pirineos. (alto) - Mi hermana es yo. (pequeño) - Manchester United es que Stoke. (bueno) 1

(rápido) - Los libros de Stephen King son los libros de Joe O'Connor. (interesante) - Mi profesora de matemáticas es mi profesora de inglés. (simpático) - Carol es muy graciosa pero Marie es Carol. (gracioso) AS TALL AS..., NOT AS RICH AS... In English we have another way of comparing things. We can say... John is richer than Mark. Mark is not as rich as John. Karen is only thirteen but is already as tall as her mother. In Spanish to say this we need the expression "tan como" or "no tan como". Eg. Mark no es tan alto como John - Mark isn't as tall as John. Karen sólo tiene 13 años pero ya es tan alta como su madre. - Karen is only 13 but is already as tall as her mother. Put the correct Spanish expression into the spaces. Eg. John es más rico que Mark. Mark no es tan rico como John,. - El caballo es más rápido que la jirafa. La jirafa no es el caballo. - El río Shannon es más largo que El Liffey. El Liffey no es el Shannon. - Yo soy mucho más inteligente que mi hermano. Mi hermano no yo. - Mark y Paul son iguales de inteligente. Mark es Paul. - La película Inception es más emocionante que Avatar. Avatar como Inception. 2
3 - China es más grande que Irlanda. Irlanda no China. - El libro de John Grisham es más interestante que lo de Stephen King. El libro de Stephen King no lo de John Grisham. - Yo y mi padre somos iguales de alto. Yo soy tan mi padre. - Fernanda es más guapa que Luisa. Luisa no Fernanda. SUPERLATIVES For a comparative you need two things, a superlative is just one thing - the best, the fastest, the most interesting etc. Again, in English we have two possibilities for making a superlative. We can add -est. eg. Julio is the brightest student in the class. or with some longer adjectives we need - 'the most...' eg. Paris is the most fascinating city in the world. Again, in Spanish we can only make the superlative one way... 'el más' or 'la más' Julio es el estudiante más inteligente en la clase. Paris es la ciudad más fascinante del mundo. Note: the superlative must come after the noun it is describing - el estudiante más inteligente, la ciudad más fascinante. As with comparatives, there are some irregular adjectives... Bueno - el/la mejor Malo - el/la peor Grande - el/la mayor (usually only for age) Pequeño - el/la menor (usually only for age, for size use el/la más pequeño/a) Eg. Yo tengo tres hermanos pero yo soy el mayor - I have three brothers but I am the oldest. Hay muchos problemas en la sociedad de hoy, pero el paro es el peor - there are many problems in today's society, but unemployment is the worst. Note: superlatives can also be plural. 'Emma' y 'Pride and Prejudice' son los mejores libros de Jane Austen. Note: El/la mejor and el/la peor go before the noun. All other superlatives go after it. 3

(bueno) - La ciudad de México es de America Latina. (ciudad, grande) - María es de la clase. (alumna, inteligente) - San Marino es de Europa. (país, pequeño) - El Ferrari es del mundo. (coche, rápido) - Londres es de Europa. (ciudad, interesante) - Mount Everest es del mundo. (montaña, alto) - Clara y Sara son de la clase. (alumna, inteligente) - La pasta es del restaurante. (comida, delicioso) - Dublin es de Irlanda. (ciudad, grande) - Usain Bolt es del mundo. (hombre, rápido) - Las fresas son de todas las frutas. (fruta, delicioso) - Lady Gaga es de todas. (cantante, bueno) - Canadá es del mundo.
