The program, PhotoCity, is being run by The AjA Project, a San-Diego based nonprofit that provides photography-based educational programming to youth. Alvaro Ruvalcaba aspires to someday open his own restaurant. They and fellow Hoover High School seniors Jennifer Mendoza and Amber Fabros took the skills they ve learned from their Culinary Arts program to the 8th Annual San Diego Teen Iron Chef competition in Kearny Mesa on Feb. 20, marking the first time that Hoover High School had entered in the event. I m expecting to have fun and cook, Ruvacalba said before the contest got underway. The culinary arts competition is based on the popular Food Network cooking show called Iron Chef, but it has been modified a tad for the high schoolers. Students are able to work on their ideas for a three-course meal, go shopping and measure their ingredients the day before; actual cooking, the making of dough, or the pre-mixing of vegetables and seasoning is not allowed until the day of the event. Once the competition gets underway, teams of four chefs get but one hour to cook and plate an appetizer, entrée and dessert. Mayor Bob Filner and City Councilwoman Marti Emerald joined students from Central Elementary and America s Finest Charter School for a Jan. 31 event celebrating a variety of benchmarks that include replacing overgrown landscaping that often obscured criminal activity with drought-resistant plants, repairing broken lights, and trimming unkempt trees. The improvements are good examples of effective Crime Prevention through Environmental Design components in public spaces, said Dan Tomsky, senior project manager with the Global Institute for Public Strategies, which is partnering with schools and the City Heights Community Development Corp. on the effort. On the horizon is the installation of six new park benches along the 40th Street and Central Avenue borders of the park, as well as a dispensary filled with supplies of plastic bags for residents to clean up after their dogs. The Teralta Community Safety Initiative is funded through a $200,000 grant from the California Endowment. The aim is to turn the park into a family friendly space that will remain consistently safe and clean for the residents of City Heights. Hoover High School s menu included a shrimp kabob appetizer; an entrée of stuffed pork loin with cream cheese, red and yellow bell peppers, Spanish rice and green beans; and baked banana flavored with orange zest and brown sugar, served on a bed of crunchy walnuts and topped with vanilla whipped cream for dessert. Those involved with the event say there is more involved than cooking. We hope that they will be the next generation of people working in the restaurant industry, but we also know that if you start off in the kitchen, you can work your way up to owning your own business, said Jan Borkum, an administrator with the San Diego chapter of the California Restaurant Association, which co-sponsors the competition. Jhosie Cheeks, a judge at the Feb. 20 competition, is Exhibit A. Cheeks began her food service career working as a prep cook at Thornton Winery in Temecula. There, she did everything from cutting onions to peeling potatoes. She has since secured a post as culinary coordinator at the Hotel Del Coronado. This competition gives them exposure that most high schoolers don t get in the professions they want to get in, Cheeks said. It gives them a glimpse of what their future could be like. It gives them an opportunity to see what it s like to be on your feet, what it s like to be under pressure, what it s like to burn something. Jennifer Mendoza said she never took to cooking before she enrolled in the Culinary Arts classes at Hoover High. While she has no intention of going into the food industry she s more interested in becoming a pediatrician or registered nurse she has no regrets about her decision to explore life in front of a stove. I want to take advantage of every opportunity that s given to me to learn, she said. Besides, now I can cook for my family. Erika Rivera watched intently as her son, Alvaro Ruvalcaba, began plating the shrimp kabob in the kitchen while Jennifer Mendoza and Adriana Aparicio put the finishing touches on the desert and Amber Fabros double checked the stuffed pork loin entrée. This is good for him, she said. It s helping him learn to follow directions. And it might help him accomplish what he wants in life. She also noted that her son has some serious skills in the kitchen. He s a good cook, she said with a smile. After the competition was over and the judges sampled the dishes, they met for some 20 minutes to determine the winner in an unusually close competition. Madison High took the top prize. Hoover came in fourth place. 3 EDUCATION P3 Residentes Toman el Mando Un proyecto de mejoras comunitarias en City Heights tradicionalmente comienza cuando una institución identifica un problema, adaptando su respuesta a la situación e invitando a los residentes a ejecutar la solución. Aprendiendo de la experiencia, un grupo de residentes de City Heights se ha organizado y han formado lo que la participante Delia Contreras llama un movimiento humano, el cual trabajará para encontrar solución a complejos problemas comunitarios bajo las riendas de los residentes del área. El grupo, en su mayoría padres de familia que también forman parte activa del grupo de Hoover, decidió hace varios meses que querían tener más control sobre lo que pasa en su comunidad. Student playwrights honored Students enrolled in Hoover High School drama classes had plays they had written performed by professional actors at the Diversionary Theatre on Park Boulevard on Feb. 27th. The students had attended the Diversionary Theatre s production of When Last We Flew by Harrison David Rivers, and then took part in a playwriting residency at school conducted by the Playwrights Project. The effort culminated with a series of plays that were performed at the Diversionary Theatre. Local parents take charge A traditional community improvement project in City Heights typically begins with an institution identifying an issue, shaping the response to the issue, and then inviting residents to execute the solution. Growing from that experience, a group of City Heights residents have organized themselves into what participant Delia Contreras calls a human movement that will be working towards solving complex community issues with residents taking the lead. The group, mostly parents who are also active in the Hoover Cluster, decided several months ago that they wanted more of a voice in what happens in their community. They approached the California Endowment and were approved for a grant to pay for training classes to help them come to the public policy bargaining table as prepared as everyone else, in the words of the group s trainer, Dr. William Oswald. On the first day of training, everyone in the group expressed what they hoped to get out of the training. Popular comments included: to help the community become better informed; to help children improve academically; to improve access to nutritious food; and to bring about change. Perhaps Hermalinda Figueroa expressed the sentiments of many when she said she wants to learn how to speak with people high up in organizations. I want to get the courage to do it. Dr. Oswald, a professor for more than 25 years, will be leading a total of 11 training sessions to teach the participants how public policy is made and how they can be at the table of the decision makers. He envisions a future where agencies support programs created by residents instead of creating programs for residents. In response to one participant s question of why residents are not currently at the decision-making level more often, Oswald said it s difficult for agencies to determine who speaks for the community. As part of the training, participants will identify what part of the community they speak for. The group is officially calling themselves the City Heights Parent Leaders. Valentina Hernandez is the chairperson. At the end of the training sessions, the group will select one City Heights issue to focus on and will identify barriers and solutions to solve it. The group is similar to, but different from, a new Resident Leadership Academy that meets weekly at the City Heights Wellness Center and is also funded through the California Endowment. The ultimate goal of both groups is to create a healthy community. Dr. Oswald says for that to happen, families have to be healthy. Dr. Oswald says City Heights has the resources to overcome its barriers but to do so agencies need to support parents who in turn will support their kids to break the cycle of hardship begetting hardship and privilege begetting privilege. 4 INYOURWORDS P4 Youth council pushes for bill of rights By Angeli Hernandez City Heights student and resident Editor s note: In late January, about a dozen Mid-City CAN Youth Council members traveled to Stockton for a workshop to learn more about the California Fund for Youth Organizing s campaign to create a California Student and Youth Bill of Rights focusing on education and opportunities for young people. The Mid-City CAN Youth Council decided to support the campaign and, after the trip, Youth Council Member Angeli Hernandez, 19, was appointed to the organizing group s advisory board. I Concejo Juvenil Promueve Declaración de Derechos feel honored to sit on the California Fund for Youth Organizing s advisory board and represent City Heights on a statewide level. The California Student and Youth Bill of Rights is a statewide campaign to pass a youth bill of rights. Because they are under age, youth often don t have protections they need. We want to make sure that we have our own set of laws that protect us and that gives us the same rights as an adult. One of the things that I thought was interesting and related to things that we are also working on in City Heights is that the youth bill of rights focuses on education and transportation for students. All youth should have the right to safe access to and from school with public transportation. What we re working on (as part of the Improving Transportation in City Heights Momentum Team) is a free transportation pass, so that students can go to school and their jobs. Another issue affecting our schools is food. Students should have more healthy options at school so they can learn and have a healthier place to be educated. At the workshop, I liked how the different communities came together and made presentations on what campaigns they are working on. They discussed what their struggles have been and what their successes have been. We were able to connect with each other, even though each city has different issues. All these issues come together for the bill of rights because if the bill of rights passes, all of our campaigns will have more support. We can hold the politicians accountable and tell them, Hey we have this bill here that protects the youths rights. So then we ll be able to get what we want much faster. Right now, the action that we re taking is writing letters to the California State Assembly urging them to support the resolution. We also plan to meet with our local Assembly members.... Youth often don t have protections they need. We want to make sure that we have our own set of laws that protect us and that gives us the same rights as an adult. Maxine Smith, a member of Mid-City CAN s Improving Transportation in City Heights or ITCH momentum team, heard many stories about those choices while talking to residents about a Youth Opportunity Pass focused on transportation. I have been out in the community speaking with people that I don t even know, Smith said. And what touched me was a grandmother taking care of her three grandchildren. She is on Social Security, so she is on a monthly check. Sharing stories such as these is what brought City Heights residents together to talk about why public transportation can make the difference between success and failure in a young person s life. The new clinic opened about a year ago. Family Health Centers treated 8,820 patients in 2011 at its old storefront location in City Heights; about 80 percent were below the federal poverty level. He had been cycling seriously for some time, but he felt a new desire to learn the art of building and maintaining bicycles. Launching a business from his garage, Mull moved into a small storefront in Ventura County within a year. Dan laughs now at how every square inch of his hole in the wall space was covered with bike parts. But suddenly, Mull was hit by a car on his bicycle and was forced to close the shop. 7 NEIGHBORHOODNEWS Rosa Parks celebrates T E T H undreds of students and other City Heights residents welcomed the Year of the Snake during a Feb. 14 Tet celebration at Rosa Parks Elementary School. Lunar calendar years are represented by 12 zodiac animals which rotate through 12-year periods. While some follow these traditions for fun, others make life decisions based on what the year is predicted to bring. For residents who subscribe to lunar calendar teachings, those born between the Vietnamese New Year (called Tet) on Feb. 10, 2013, and following New Year will have certain strengths and weaknesses associated with the snake. Tet is by far the most important holiday in Vietnamese culture. Every year is seen as a clean slate and an opportunity for people to be more successful than the year before. Some people renovate their homes, buy new clothes, or look for new businesses opportunities leading up to Tet. The Rosa Parks Parent Center and Vietnamese Parent Association have hosted a Tet celebration on the campus of Rosa Parks since its opening 16 years ago. This year, residents from all over City Heights came to campus to celebrate, including even those without children at the school. It s important to pass Vietnamese traditions and culture on to the next generation, explained Thu Tong, president of the Vietnamese Parent Association. The traditions are supported and celebrated by students and faculty Azalea Park Neighborhood Association honored The San Diego City Council recognized the City Heights Azalea Park Neighborhood Association for its community service efforts over the years with a proclamation at a Feb. 5 council meeting. The following Saturday, a second celebration was held at the Azalea Park Water Conservation Garden to allow more people to attend. At that time Councilmember Marti Emerald surprised long-time residents Tom Lashbrook and Larry May with a Special Commendation Award for their years of volunteer service The location of the Saturday event is indicative of what Azalea Park residents have done to improve their community. Former City Councilmember Toni Atkins and current City Council President Todd Gloria worked with the Neighborhood Association to secure funds to make improvements to a vacant lot at the entrance of Azalea Park on the corner of Violet Street and Poplar Drive. The Rebuilding Together San Diego organization directed 300 volunteers to install what is now a beautiful retreat with low maintenance plants, walkways, and public art. San Diego Canyonlands and community volunteers have continued to maintain the Azalea Park Water Conservation Garden as it adds more public art. At the Saturday ceremony, Neighborhood Association President Linda Pennington recognized many community volunteers for their efforts, including: SDSU student interns; the Monroe Clark Cesar Chavez Club; Cactus Bob; Ocean Discovery Institute staff and students; the City Park and Recreation Dept.; the San Diego Police Dept.; South Castle neighbors Dennis Wood and Jody Carey; the City Heights Community Development Corp.; and artists Vicki Leon, Teresa Unger, Jim Bliesner, Nick Gecan, Karim Carlock, Gloria Muriel, Beth Emerich, Mike Amorillo, Luis Diaz, Maxx Moses, Barbara Nigel and Rich Robinson, who all contributed art pieces to the Azalea Park Water Conservation Garden. 8 NEIGHBORHOODNEWS City Heights man honored as local hero By David Ogul Some 1,000 residents of City Heights had just attended a memorial for a slain police officer a couple days earlier, so it didn t take long for Robert Haley of City Heights to spring into action when he saw a man on a bicycle viciously assault a police woman just a few feet away. I had to do something, Haley said. She would have been dead. He would have killed her. Haley, credited with saving Officer Kelly Doherty from possible fatal injuries, was recently honored by police Chief William Lansdowne at the 22nd Annual Salute to Local Heroes event sponsored by the San Diego Rotary Club. Haley became a hero on Aug. 13, He said he was in the front yard of his City Heights home when he saw Doherty pull over a man on a bicycle. I turned around and I saw him take her in his arms and flip her over, Haley said. I jumped in right away. He was beating up a cop. I just wanted to help her. As soon as he intervened, however, the assailant just went nuts, Haley recalled. Knife in hand, the man took a swipe at Haley, stabbing him in the arm, and slashing the officer in the face. Haley ran to the patrol car. I got on the radio and said, `Officer down! A short time later, squad cars were on scene and the assailant was in custody. Both Haley and Doherty have recovered from their wounds. The man arrested for the attack, a wanted felon, was sentenced to nearly 25 years in prison for the assault and a series of burglaries. 10 SERVICES Staying safe from burglaries in the home With some 228 burglaries reported in City Heights last year, and with more than 5 million residential burglaries reported annually across the nation, criminals have plenty of opportunities to break into homes and businesses. But burglaries often are a crime of opportunity. And police in San Diego and elsewhere say there are several simple steps you can take to help safeguard your property. The most obvious? Lock all outside doors and windows before you leave the house or go to bed. Even if you are simply going down the street for just a few minutes, make sure you lock your doors. Other suggestions, which have been culled from various police department websites, include: - Leave your lights on when you go out at night. If you are going to be away for awhile, you might want to connect a couple lamps to automatic timers to turn them on in the evening and off during the day. - Keep your garage door closed and locked. - If you are going on vacation, make sure a trusted friend, neighbor or relative will promptly pick up the mail, newspapers or flyers. You can arrange for the Post Office to hold your mail while you are away. - Because sliding-glass doors are vulnerable, look into simple tools that can help prevent them from being opened. Dowels or locking pins work especially well. - Store such things as lawn mowers, barbecues and bicycles out of sight. You don t want to tempt a thief. - Use curtains on garage and basement windows. - Look out for your neighbors and arrange for neighbors to look out for you. Look into organizing a Neighborhood Watch program on your street. - Never announce your vacation plans on social networking sites. - Trim bushes to less than 3 feet to eliminate possible hiding places, especially near windows and sidewalks. - Trim tree canopies to at least 8 feet to allow visibility into your property. - Replace solid walls in front yards with open fencing to eliminate hiding places and make climbing more difficult. The teams are collecting signatures on a petition supporting a transportationfocused Youth Opportunity Pass that they will send to the San Diego Association of Governments - also known as SANDAG - in the spring. The outreach teams collected 250 signatures by mid-february, bringing the total signatures the ITCH team has collected to more than 800. Program Manager City Heights Community Development Corp. is partnering with Feeding America to make it easier for seniors and disabled residents to eat a healthy diet. Joel Aranzubia is among the beneficiaries. Aranzubia, a City Heights resident who lives in a building restricted to seniors and disabled families, was rendered legally blind a few years ago from diabetic retinopathy. I never thought I would be in this situation, but I am, he said. Losing his sight means Aranzubia, just 48 years old, often has to depend on caregivers to meet his daily needs. Still, challenges remain. Now, under the program created by City Heights Community Development Corp. and Feeding America, groceries are being brought to Aranzubia s door every month. The service, Aranzubia said, is more than a blessing... It s almost like a surprise, like a gift. For many, the service brings more than groceries. It also provides an act of kindness, a social opportunity, a moment of faith that people care. It s helping me live, Aranzubia said. This encouragement is making me go forward in life just knowing that there are people out there who care. Said Amina Adan, a resident services specialist for City Heights CDC: Feeding America has proved to be a valuable partner and asset to our community because they focus on people and their needs, and that is a mission we have in common. Joel Aranzubia is among the beneficiaries. Aranzubia, a City Heights resident who lives in a building restricted to seniors and disabled families, was rendered legally blind a few years ago from diabetic retinopathy. I never thought I would be in this situation, but I am, he said. Losing his sight means Aranzubia, just 48 years old, often has to depend on caregivers to meet his daily needs. Still, challenges remain. Now, under the program created by City Heights Community Development Corp. and Feeding America, groceries are being brought to Aranzubia s door every month. The service, Aranzubia said, is more than a blessing... It s almost like a surprise, like a gift. For many, the service brings more than groceries. It also provides an act of kindness, a social opportunity, a moment of faith that people care. It s helping me live, Aranzubia said. This encouragement is making me go forward in life just knowing that there are people out there who care. Said Amina Adan, a resident services specialist for City Heights CDC: Feeding America has proved to be a valuable partner and asset to our community because they focus on people and their needs, and that is a mission we have in common. They even want us to have a nutrition class exclusive for our seniors, I love that idea! Each month we pick a restaurant in or close to our community that serves wonderful ethnic dishes. We reserve a table or two and share good food, stories and have an enjoyable evening. Last month we went to Lee s Garden on University Avenue and 54th Street, where some 20 hungry people showed up to eat delicious Chinese cuisine. The food was excellent and the portions were large. We spun the dishes on a huge lazy Susan so everyone could try a little from each dish. I ordered an old staple favorite, black mushroom chicken. Others tried new dishes; one was called the fried fish platter. One couple ordered cashew chicken, sweet and sour soup and fried wonton. One diner said that altogether, We basically ordered most of the menu. We look forward to sharing another meal again this month at Asmara Restaurant near Marlborough and University avenues. La comida fue excelente y las porciones generosas. Los platillos estaban en una plataforma giratoria y todos pudieron probar un poquito de cada uno. Ordené uno de mis platillos favoritos, pollo con hongos negros. Otras personas probaron nuevos platillos, como el plato de pescado frito. Una pareja ordenó pollo con nueces de la india (cashews), sopa agridulce y wonton frito. Uno de los comensales dijo que básicamente ente todos ordenamos la mayor parte del menú. Esperamos compartir nuevamente con usted este mes en el Restaurante Asmara, ubicado cerca de las avenidas Marlborough y University.
