A persistent situation with the Ecuadorian is poverty and malnutrition, especially in rural areas and among indigenous and Afro-Ecuadorians. This situation is compounded by marginal agro-ecological and social conditions, and weak relationships with the environment of most small farmers located in the provinces of interest in the project. In this context, Andean grains (lupine, quinoa and amaranth) become strategic for small and medium farmers, because they are crops that are adapted to marginal agro-ecological conditions and have high nutritional value. It is necessary to disseminate more widely the knowledge that is available so far, on the agronomic, nutritional, culinary aspects of thes crops and continue with the generation of new alternative technologies to improve and expand their production and consumption (new varieties, pest control, seeds of good quality, processing, associativity, etc.). Through the generation, validation and dissemination of technological alternatives, and the momentum of the production / processing and promotion of consumption, it is intended to benefit small farmers in communities of Cotopaxi provinces (cantons Latacunga, Saquisilí, Pujilí and Sigchos), Chimborazo (Guamote and Alausí) and Canar (Canar, El Tambo and Suscal). Similarly, the project will benefit small and medium agribusinesses interested in including in their processes Andean grains, to have a permanent and domestic supply volumes and quality standards appropriate to their needs. Indirectly it will benefit the general population, markets by providing products in quinoa, amaranth and lupine quality and reasonable prices. The overall project objective is to increase production, productivity and consumption of Andean grains in the provinces Cotopaxi, Chimborazo and Canar, Ecuador. To meet the objectives, the INIAP must consolidate its research team in Andean grains, energizing the system of production and distribution of selected seeds of good quality, increase the number of farmers served by the project, continuing the promotion plan for consumption and implement the monitoring and evaluation plan. The results obtained with this project will be shared with other initiatives in the country. For example MAGAP in the province of Imbabura, together with FAO, or the State University of Bolivar, all promote the production and technology of Andean grains and the information is very useful for this project. Development projects such as those for the northern border, with the formation of anchor companies (Cereals and INAGROFA for quinoa and L'Verde for lupin) are spaces to disseminate technological advances of these crops. In addition, marketing is key to place the surplus in the market but under favorable conditions for producers in this sense will narrow ties with firms such as CAMARI, MCCH and agribusiness as GRAMOLINO and others. Also important is the inclusion of quinoa in the State Food Program, which is key to increasing production and organizational strengthening of small producers. DIAGNÓSTICO DE LAS PLAGAS DEL CULTIVO DEL CHOCHO (Lupinus mutabilis Sweet) EN LA ZONA DE JOSEGUANGO BAJO, ALAQUEZ Y JUAN MONTALVO; CANTÓN LATACUNGA, PROVINCIA COTOPAXI Eduardo Peralta (INIAP), Marco Rivera (INIAP), Luis Lomas (INIAP), Nelson Mazón (INIAP), Olivier Dangles (IRD), Emile Faye (IRD) Antecedentes En Ecuador, el cultivo del chocho se ubica en una rango altitudinal que va de los 2500 a los 3400 m y hasta los 3600 m con riesgos de heladas y granizadas (Jacobsen y Sherwood, 2002; Peralta et ál, 2008). Según el III Censo Nacional Agropecuario, el número de Unidades de Producción Agropecuaria (UPAs) dedicadas a este cultivo son 9596, con una superficie sembrada de 5974 ha; siendo Cotopaxi la provincia de mayor peso, con 4869 UPAs y 1940 ha. En cuanto a la producción, el rendimiento promedio a nivel nacional es de 317 kg/ha. Este rendimiento bajo se debe, entre otros factores al ataque de plagas, siendo las más importantes las plagas del suelo como los trozadores, el barrenador menor del tallo, los chinches, barrenador del ápice del tallo, los trips y el gusano de la vaina (Jacobsen y Sherwood, 2002; Rivera y Gallegos, 2001). Para desarrollar alternativas tecnológicas para el manejo de las plagas del chocho, es importante identificarles taxonómicamente y entender su dinámica biológica y ecológica. En este sentido, con el apoyo del IRD de Francia, la selección del área para el diagnóstico y posterior monitoreo se están aplicando técnicas de Información Geográfica GIS (mapas temáticos digitalizados, fotografías aéreas), incluyendo la selección aleatoria de puntos georeferenciados, recolección de información, manejo y análisis de datos, etc. Objetivo Hasta diciembre de 2012, a través de un diagnóstico se determina si la presencia de las plagas en el cultivo del chocho en la zona de Juan Montalvo, Aláquez y Joseguango del cantón Latacunga, provincia Cotopaxi; se debe más a factores ambientales o al manejo del cultivo. Metodología La pregunta que a través del diagnóstico se pretende responder es: qué es más importante para la presencia de las plagas en el cultivo del chocho, los factores ambientales o el manejo del cultivo? 1. Selección de la zona La zona de estudio se seleccionó de acuerdo a la disponibilidad de mapas y fotografía aérea, por presentar las condiciones ambientales óptimas para el cultivo del chocho (precipitación, suelos, altitud), por la importancia del cultivo del chocho en la zona y por la presencia de diferentes sistemas de siembra y de 6

7 manejo del cultivo. La delimitación del área se realizó mediante la observación de los mapas y fotografía y de una constatación en campo a través de un recorrido por la zona. En el área delimitada y de forma aleatoria se identificaron 100 puntos georeferenciados, excluyendo del sorteo las áreas no cultivadas y/o poco probables que se encuentren cultivos de chocho (bosques, viviendas, invernaderos). 2. Diagnóstico de las plagas del chocho Para el diagnóstico se considerarán variables explicativas y variables explicadas (Cuadro 1). Cuadro 1. Variables y método de recolección de información. Manejo y análisis de la información Se generará una base de datos con toda la información de cada punto obtenido, la cual será ingresada al GIS para la generación de mapas explicativos. Con las variables relacionadas con el manejo del cultivo se construirá un Índice de manejo. Los análisis estadísticos consistirán en: 1) Análisis espaciales de la repartición de la densidad de daño dentro del área de estudio 2) Construcción de modelos tipo lineares generalizados para cuantificar el peso de cada variable explicativa en explicar la variancia de los daños al chocho observados en el campo. Estos análisis permitirán identificar zonas de riesgo en el área de estudio y factores claves de la causa de daños de las plagas al chocho. 7

8 Actividades realizadas Luego de un recorrido por algunas comunidades del cantón Latacunga y al confirmar la presencia del cultivo del chocho (en diferentes formas de siembra) y al disponer de mapas digitales y fotografía aérea, se seleccionó y delimitó la zona para realizar el monitoreo de las plagas del chocho. A la vez, al azar se seleccionaron 100 puntos georeferenciados, de los cuales se tomarán datos en por lo menos 60 (Figura 1). 8

Cosecha Cantidad cosechada (kg): Con el objetivo de lograr la autonomía en el manejo de datos geo-referenciados con el programa ArcGIS 10 se realizó el Curso-Taller (21 23 de marzo de 2012) de nivel básico para el monitoreo y modelamiento de la distribución de plagas, con los siguientes temas: Día 1: Curso teórico (Introducción SIG, teoría de la geomática, funcionamiento de un GPS, básicos sobre el funcionamiento del programa ArcGIS 10) y uso de Basecamp y ArcGIS 10 con los datos recogidos en el campo. Día 2: Prácticas de trabajo con ArcGIS 10. Uso de fuente de datos georeferenciados y manejo de datos con ArcCatalog. Enfoque de geodatabase. Uso de capas y rasters de la zona de estudio en Arcmap. Día 3: Tratamiento de datos con ArcGIS y digitalización de los elementos del paisaje de Latacunga. Geotratamientos y Geo-statisticas aplicados al monitoreo de plagas. Creación y exportación de mapas de la 10

11 zona. Muestra del funcionamiento de ArcScene (Digital Elevation Model y representación en 3D de la zona de estudio). En la capacitación participaron en total 11 técnicos de las siguientes instituciones: INIAP, Universidad Estatal de Cotopaxi y Universidad Católica de Quito. Finalmente, hasta el momento se ha registrado información de 20 puntos y hasta mediados del mes de mayo de 2012 se espera disponer la información de al menos 60 puntos y continuar con el análisis de esta información. Resultados proyectados Los mayores daños que causan las plagas del chocho están relacionados con el manejo del cultivo, principalmente con la rotación de cultivos, sistema de siembra (monocultivo vs. policultivo) y aplicación de insecticidas. Las condiciones ambientales (baja precipitación y menor altitud) también tienen influencia en la presencia de las plagas pero en menor grado que las prácticas de cultivo. De lo observado hasta ahora, en el cultivo del chocho, la mayoría de los agricultores de la zona de monitoreo, no realizan más labores que la siembra y la cosecha. Se observa también (sobre todo en la parte más alta) una disminución de la siembra del chocho, debido a la disminución de la cosecha por efecto de las plagas (algunos pierden el cultivo en el momento de la emergencia) y el exceso de lluvia, y por el acceso al agua de riego (prefieren sembrar pastos para alimentar al ganado). Estos resultados permitirán planificar las futuras actividades de investigación (ecología y biología de las plagas) y los temas (capacitación, investigación participativa) y zonas de intervención (con mayor riesgo de mayor incidencia de plagas). En base de esta experiencia se planificarán este tipo de estudios en otras zonas en donde es importante el cultivo del chocho y las plagas también causan daños.
