Ingrao 326 Boylston Hall (617) An advanced language and culture class that further develops linguistic competence through grammar review and, as a focus for class discussions, an introduction to Hispanics social contexts through films, literary and historical readings, art, as well as selections from the press. Noticia de un secuestro -Other materials will be distributed in class Some of the topics to be discussed include: - Legends of the Hispanic traditions - Urban conflicts (narcotráfico/narcoterrorismo). - Social mobilization (inmigración). - Art as an expression of social protest. - Music, rhythms. - People and events that have brought about social change in the Hispanic world. - Relevant current news. Films: - Voces inocentes - Balseros - Tango - Diarios de motocicleta The course is conducted in Spanish. There will be 3 tests, 4 compositions, and a final exam in class.

2 ABSENCES After the first week of classes any student who accumulates three absences without an official excuse must see the Course Head to discuss the situation. Students who continue being absent after receiving a warning may be recommended for exclusion from the course, in accordance with the Rules Relating to College Studies. COMPOSITIONS Compositions should be 2 pages long. They should be turned in on the due date indicated in the syllabus. If you are not going to be in class that day, please turn it in the class before, or ask someone to turn it in for you. Compositions turned in one day late loose 10 pts., 2 days late 20 points: after that they will not be accepted. If you have a particular situation, please get in touch with Sra. Ingrao.
