Peete Elementary, want to welcome you a new and exciting school year! Teachers and other school staff members want this year to be an especially good one for each child. In order for this to happen, we all must work closely together. This handbook contains information that both students and parents are likely to need during the school year. In addition to this handbook, parents and students should also become familiar with the Tyler Independent School District s Student Code of Conduct, required by state law and intended to promote school safety and an atmosphere for learning. Any changes to policies and procedures for our campus will be relayed to parents and students in writing through home communications and newsletters. Please review the entire handbook with your child and keep it as a reference during this school year. If you or your child has questions about any of the material in this handbook, please contact one of our staff members. Also, please complete and return the acknowledgment form, so that we have a record that you have received a copy of this handbook. 14 Getting to School on Time Our doors open at 7:15 A.M. and school starts at 8:00 A.M. It is important to get to school on time. Students should not arrive on campus before 7:15 a.m. Adult supervision will not available until this time. 1. Students must report to the cafeteria for breakfast each morning between 7:15 a.m. and 7:50 a.m. Doors to the cafeteria line will be closed promptly at 7:50 a.m. each morning. This will allow students to be in their classroom promptly at 8:00 a.m. to begin the day. 2. Any student reporting to school after the 8:00 a.m. tardy bell must report to the office for the tardy slip. All doors, with exception to the front entrance of the school, will automatically lock at 8:00 a.m. 3. It is important that your child arrives to school on time each day. Instruction and daily expectations begin at 8:00 a.m. with the teacher. 4. All students will report to the cafeteria each morning when they arrive. Grades 3-5 will move to the gym after they have finished eating breakfast. Breakfast is served between 7:15 a. m. and 7:50 a.m. Our campus participates with the Breakfast In The Classroom program. Therefore, all students will eat breakfast each morning. It is important that they arrive prior to 7:50 a.m. to be served.

18 Lunch 1. Lunch is served between 10:40 A.M. and 12:45 P.M. daily. 2. Student lunches are $ 1.50 and adult lunches are $2.50. You are welcome to eat with your child any day that you can come. You may contact the office to find out what time your child eats lunch. Lunchroom Expectations Get permission from an adult before leaving your seat. Speak at your table in a #1 voice level when music is off. Wait your turn in line. Keep your surrounding area clean.

24 Campus Dress Code 1. W.A. Peete Elementary has established an adopted standard code of dress for our campus. Each student is to comply with this standard code of dress. 2. The standard code of dress will be worn Monday through Thursday each week. Fridays will be choice day and students may wear regular clothes that comply with Tyler ISD dress code or the standard code of dress for the campus. 3. Standard code of dress colors are navy & khaki bottoms/ navy, white, or burgandy tops. 4. A copy of the standard code of dress was given to students at the beginning of the school year. Additional copies of our standard code of dress is available in our office. 5. If a school holiday occurs on Friday forcing Thursday to be the last day of the week, school uniforms will be worn. Notification will be given to parents when uniforms are not to be worn on a special day. 6. Students are not allowed to have haircuts that are distractive with designs, words, logos, etc. or Mohawks. *All students must wear clothing tucked inside their pants and wear belts at all times!

26 W. A. PEETE ELEMENTARY Standard code of dress DRESS FOR SUCCESS! At W. A. Peete Elementary, we believe that students should DRESS FOR SUCCESS. Research shows that if students are dressed properly and neatly that they are more successful with learning and generally in school. Therefore, our campus has adopted an uniform policy for our campus. All students Head Start through 5 th grade are required to follow the campus uniform policy. The policy is as follows: 1. Students will wear navy or khaki uniform shorts, slacks, skirts, etc. 2. Students will wear navy, white or burgundy tops. 3. All shirts will be worn inside slacks or shorts. Belts will be worn with all slacks or shorts that have belt loops. Absolutely no shirt tails will be allowed to be worn outside of slacks or shorts. 4. Shoes should be comfortable and closed toe and heel. This is for the purpose of students being in physical education classes so that their feet are protected from injury. 5. Uniforms will be worn Monday through Thursday. Friday will be choice day and students may wear uniforms or other appropriate clothes that follow the TISD dress code for students. Students will still need to wear shirt tails inside of clothing. As a parent, I have read and understand the campus uniform policy. I also understand that if my child does not follow the dress code that he/she could be subject to disciplinary actions.

27 W. A. PEETE ELEMENTARY UNIFORM POLICY DRESS FOR SUCCESS! En W. A. Peete Elementary, creemos que los alumnos deberían vestir para triunfar. Diversos estudios muestran que si los estudiantes visten de forma adecuada, tienen más facilidad para tener éxito en cualquier actividad escolar. Por tanto, nosotros hemos adoptado unas obligaciones con respecto al uniforme para toda la escuela. Los zapatos deberán ser cómodos y cerrados (no dedos por fuera) de los pies y sin tacón. Esto protegerá los pies del alumno de posibles lesiones durante las clases de gimnasia. 5. El uniforme se utilizara de lunes a jueves. Los viernes el vestuario queda a su elección y los alumnos podrán vestir el uniforme o cualquier otra prenda, siempre que siga los principios corrección del TISD. Se continuará utilizando la regla de que toda prenda debe estar por dentro del pantalón o falda. Como padre, yo he entendido y aceptado las normas sobre el uniforme del distrito. También entiendo que si mi hijo/a no cumple dichas normas, deberá atenerse al código de disciplina de la escuela. Classroom Expectations

31 Rewards Students will be rewarded for good and positive behavior. Rewards will be determined by each classroom teacher. Rewards for good and positive behavior will be an integral part of our campus discipline management plan. Students should understand that good behavior is valued on our campus through verbal praise and tangible rewards as determined by teachers and staff. Campus administrators will refer to the TISD Student Code of Conduct for any behavior or consequence not outlined. Discipline referrals are sent to the office. Students will not be sent to the office until the administrator has called for the student. In the event a student needs to be removed from class, the teacher will contact the office and the administrator will be contacted to remove the student.

Recompensas por positiva y buena conducta formarán parte de nuestro plan de disciplina de la escuela. Los estudiantes sabrán que una buena conducta es valorada en la escuela a través de comentarios verbales así como recompensas tangibles determinadas por los profesores y empleados. La administración de la escuela remitirá al código de conducta del estudiante en el TISD cualquier mala conducta no señalada aquí. Las malas conductas se remitirán a la oficina. Los estudiantes no serán enviados a la oficina hasta que no sean llamados. En el caso en que sea necesario sacar a un niño de la clase, alguien de la oficina deberá ir a buscarlo.

36 Dear Parent, It is very important that your child be successful this year. In order for this to occur, it is important that we communicate with you about the progress of your child on a weekly basis. Following this memo, you will find a conduct form that will come home each Thursday with your child. It is required that you read the report, discuss the report with your child, and then initial for the week. You need to return this form with your child the next day. Also, teachers will have a designated conference time each day. This time is during the physical education time for each grade level. You may contact your child s teacher to schedule a conference. Since we have grade level meetings on Wednesday, we request that you try not to schedule a conference with our teachers on this day of the week. A physical education schedule is included in this booklet for your reference. In addition to our campus-wide conduct report sheet, many of our classroom teachers will have additional or personal ways of communicating with each you. When necessary, they will also make personal telephone calls to keep you informed of your child s progress. Our second through fifth grade students will also be using school calendar agendas. These agendas will help you know homework assignments for his/her class. Please make sure that you check your child s agendas weekly. Remember, the agendas are for our second, third, fourth, and fifth grade students only. We appreciate your continued support of our students and staff here at W.A. Peete Elementary. Adicionalmente a nuestro reporte de conducta, muchos de los maestros tendrán medios de comunicación con usted, es decir, que cuando sea necesario, ellos le llamaran por teléfono para mantenerlo informado del progreso de su hijo/a. Los estudiantes de segundo a quinto grado, utilizaran agendas con calendario. Estas agendas le ayudaran a mantener informado sobre las tareas y actividades de la clase. 40 TISD VISITOR POLICY Parents are cordially invited to visit school and to observe their child s progress. Classrooms visits should not be longer than fifteen minutes. Visits to individual classrooms during instructional time that will be longer than this time are permitted only with prior approval of the principal and teacher and so long as their duration or frequency does not interfere with the delivery of instruction or disrupt the normal school environment. All visitors are expected to demonstrate the highest standards of courtesy and conduct; disruptive behavior will not be permitted. All visitors are asked to check in at the office. Identification (driver s license or certified ID card) will be checked. Please have this readily available at time of arrival. Children (under the age of 18) unaccompanied by parents may not visit. When a parent plans to eat lunch at school, the homeroom teacher should be notified so that an accurate lunch count may be reported to the cafeteria. Parents desiring to have their child s friend eat lunch with them must have written consent from the other child s parent presented when checking in at the office. No exceptions. (New TISD guideline) Before any child is released from school, the child s student registration card will be checked by school personnel to see if the person has permission to pick up the child. Identification (driver s license) will be checked. In order for an adult, other than the parent, to pick up a child, his/her name must be listed on the enrollment card and the teacher must have written notice from the parent stating who will be picking up your child that day. If you need to pick your child up early or your child is sick, you must come through the office to sign him or her out. We will then call your child to the office. Frequent early check-outs are discouraged and could impact the success of your child. Please go over with your child who is allowed to pick them up from school as well as how they are to get home each day. Example: Walk, ride bus, or be picked up

41 REGLAS DEL TISD PARA LOS VISITANTES Los padres de familia, están cordialmente invitados a visitar la escuela y de esta manera podrán observar el progreso de sus hijos. Estas visitas no podrán durar más de 15 minutos. Las visitas individuales a los salones de clase durante el periodo de tiempo de instrucción solo son permitidas con aprobación del director y del profesor/a. Dichas visitas podrán alargarse siempre y cuando no interfieran con el ambiente normal de instrucción que en ese momento se este llevando a cabo. Se espera que todos los visitantes demuestren cortesía y buena conducta. No se permitirá un comportamiento inadecuado. Todos los visitantes deben identificarse en la oficina, su licencia de manejo será inspeccionada (u otra identificación). Por favor, téngala a mano en el momento que usted llegue a la escuela. Niños (de 18 años y, o menores) que no vengan acompañados por los padres, no podrán asistir a la visita. Cuando los padres de familia, planeen comer el almuerzo en la escuela con sus hijos, deben notificarle a la maestra de estos, para que sean tomados en cuenta y así de esta manera, sean considerados en la cafetería. Los padres que deseen que el amigo(a) de su hijo/a tome el almuerzo junto con ellos, deberá traer un permiso por escrito y aprobado por los padres del amigo/a, el cual deberá ser mostrado en la oficina. No hay excepciones (Esta es la nueva política de TISD). Antes que algún estudiante salga de la escuela, se verificará la tarjeta de registro por el personal de la oficina y se confirmará quienes son las personas que tienen el permiso de los padres para recoger al niño/a, como se indicó anteriormente, se utilizará la licencia de manejar, como otra forma de identificación. Es importante mencionar que cualquier otra persona que se encargue de recoger a sus hijos, diferente a los padres, debe estar su nombre registrado en la oficina de la escuela. Si desea recoger a su hijo/a temprano o si este se encuentra enfermo, primero debe pasar a la oficina para notificar que va a recoger a su hijo/a. Después llamaremos a su hijo/a para que se presente en la oficina de la escuela. Las constantes faltas y salidas de la escuela, pueden afectar el éxito académico de su hijo/a. 44 School Safety 1. Please drop your child off on the curb side. This keeps your child from having to walk between cars. Students should not arrive at school prior to 7:15 a.m. Adult supervision begins at 7:15 a.m. 2. Please pick up your child so that they do not have to walk across the street to get into the car. Pull up to the curb and allow other cars to pass as you load your child into the car. Please do not sit in your car and blow or yell for your child to cross the street. 3. PLEASE remind your child/children to remain in their designated pickup area. 4. Teachers are on duty each morning and afternoon to ensure your child s safety. 5. Please follow the afternoon pickup procedures and traffic flow as indicated in the folder material. 6. All students/parents must enter through the front door of the school at all times. Adults must receive and wear id badges provided at the front counter.

Estas instrucciones se encuentran en la carpeta que contiene los materiales que se entregaran al principio del año escolar. 6. Todos los alumnos/ padres deben entrar por la puerta principal de la escuela. Los adultos deberán pedir a la entrada su pase y llevarlo a la vista en todo momentos. 46 Attendance & Illness 1. Please keep your child at home if he/she is ill. It is important that children feel well in order to be productive learners. However, attendance at school is very important and excessive absences can be directly related to your child s successful progress and being promoted to the next grade. 2. Parents will need to provide a note documenting the reason for absence and this note must be turned in to the child s teacher or our parent liaison when the student returns to school. 3. After two unexcused absences, you will be referred to our Visiting Teacher and Absentee Review Board. (Excessive absences could result in grade retention.) 4. Perfect attendance awards will be given each six weeks for students present each day. 5. Attendance is crucial to the success of your child in the classroom. Attending school on a daily basis will help in the academic success of your child. It is important that your child eats healthy, get plenty of rest, and come to school each day.

47 Asistencia y Enfermedades 1. Por favor, mantenga a su hijo/a en casa si se encuentra enfermo/a. Es importante que sus hijos se encuentren en buenas condiciones de salud para que puedan ser estudiantes productivos. Sin embargo, la asistencia a la escuela es importante, las ausencias excesivas pueden causar que su hijo no tenga un progreso exitoso y de esta manera, no podría ser promovido al siguiente ano escolar. 2. Los padres deben proveer una nota dando la razón de la ausencia, la cual debe ser entregada a el profesor/a de su hijo/a o en la oficina, a la persona encargada de las ausencias haciéndole saber cuando regresa el estudiante a la escuela. 3. Después de dos ausencias sin ser excusadas, el estudiante será referido a nuestro departamento de Visita del maestro y también las ausencias serán sometidas a revisión por el comité de ausencias. (Ausencias excesivas tendrán como resultado que el estudiante sea retenido de grado, es decir que tendrá que repetir el año escolar). 4. Premios de asistencia serán dados cada seis semanas para aquellos estudiantes que no faltaron a la escuela ningún día durante el mes. 5. La asistencia es importante para que los estudiantes tengan éxito académicamente. Es importante que su hijo/a se nutra con comida saludable y que descanse lo suficiente para que venga todos los días a la escuela.

49 W. A. Peete Elementary K-2 Promotion Standards W. A. Peete Elementary has set high expectations and standards for all children. Therefore, the following are promotion standards for grades K All students in grade K-2 will be reading on or above grade level by the end of the school year which will be determined by district and state assessments and benchmarks. 2. All students in grade K-2 will be performing on or above grade level in math which will be determined through district and campus assessments. 3. All students will score a passing rate of 70% on the campus/state/district reading assessments. 4. All students will meet the promotion standards as determined by the Tyler ISD in accordance with local policies. 5. Second grade students must have a yearly average of 70 in reading/language arts and math. They must also have an overall average of 70 for all subject areas. Because these goals are so important to the future success of your child, your child will be promoted only if he/she has met the academic standards as mentioned above. Your child must be reading at or above grade level and performing at or above grade level in mathematical skills to be promoted to the next grade. If your child is not performing at or above grade level during the school year, he/she will be required to attend our extended day programs. At the end of the school year, your child may be required to attend summer school if summer school sessions are provided. Attending summer school will not promote your child to the next grade, but it will assist in strengthening his/her skills in reading, math, writing and make your child more successful the next school year. Students are required to attend summer school at least 95% of the time. The staff at Peete Elementary is committed to assuring that each child is successful in reaching his/her goals. Además al final del curso deberá asistir a la escuela de verano. La asistencia a la escuela de verano no sirve para pasar el curso pero supondrá un apoyo y refuerzo importante para el próximo año. La asistencia a la escuela de verano es obligatoria un mínimo del 95% de esta. 51 W. A. PEETE ELEMENTARY PROMOTION POLICY STANDARDS Grades 3-5 Academic success is very important to each child here on our campus. In order to prepare our students to be successful, our promotion standards must be increased to meet the expectations of our district and state mandates. This causes us to raise the academic expectations of our students. The following is a list of requirements for our students for this school year to be promoted to the next grade: Students must pass reading/language arts and math with a grade average of 70 and have a 70 overall average for all academic subjects. Students must meet the required attendance expectations of the district in order to be promoted to the next grade. Students must not be absent more than 12 schools days with unexcused absences. All of these above mentioned items will be considered when promoting students to the next grade. Should it be determined by the classroom teacher and principal that your child needs to attend summer school because he/she did not meet one of these criteria, your child will be expected to attend summer school. You can assist us with these expectations by conferencing with your child s teacher, making sure that your child understands these requirements and making sure that your child is completing his/her homework. Discuss with your child the importance of doing their very best in school, pay attention to their teacher and doing what s expected of him/her in the classroom both academically and behaviourally. Students also need to understand that they need to ask questions about their assignments when they don t understand. We need your cooperation and support with our promotion policy. 52 W. A. PEETE ELEMENTARY REQUISITOS MÍNIMOS PARA LA PROMOCION. Grades 3-5 Estimados padres, El éxito académico de cada estudiante es muy importante en nuestra escuela. Con el objetivo de preparar a nuestros estudiantes para conseguirlo, debemos elevar los Requisitos Mínimos de promoción para atender las expectativas que nos marca el distrito y los mandatos del estado. Les detallamos a continuación una lista de mínimos que todo estudiante debe cumplir para ser promocionado al curso siguiente el próximo año: 1. Los estudiantes deberán pasar lectura/ lenguaje and matemáticas con una media de setenta.
