Parent and Family Guide: Overview Parents and Families An Important Resource Over thirty years of research has shown that parents are an important influence in helping their children achieve academic success. After all, a parent is a child s first teacher! And most parents take pride in the successes of their children. When parents are involved in their children s education, children do better in school, attend school more regularly, and are more likely to go on to postsecondary schools. When parents are involved in education, schools improve, too. As a teacher, you spend about five to nine hours a day with your students. Parents are a valuable resource you can tap into to extend learning past the school day. With your guidance, parents can help keep students accountable and support you in your teaching. This planner program provides resources you can use to help you begin the parent conversations early in the school year and keep them going throughout the year. Your planner program resources can help you communicate your classroom goals so parents and family members can share and support your efforts for high achieving learners. None of us got where we are solely by pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps. We got here because somebody a parent, a teacher, an Ivy League crony, or a few nuns bent down and helped us pick up our boots. Thurgood Marshall [year] School Specialty, Inc. All rights reserved. 6 Family Guide to the Planner The planner your child will be using this year has been designed to teach students organizational skills for life. These include good study and work habits such as: recording homework and tasks; remembering test dates, study schedules, and personal commitments; planning when to do homework and other work; and completing projects, assignments, and personal tasks. The planner can be a powerful tool, but students need an interested and helpful adult to use it most effectively. Most students won t pick up a planner and start using it all on their own. They need support from their teacher, their school, and from you to get the most use out of their planner. The Family Guide to the Planner will show you how to help your child develop strong, lifelong habits. The planner will also give you tips on: supporting learning and skill development; helping with homework and test preparation; and encouraging your child to set and achieve goals. It s not only children who grow. Parents do, too. As much as we watch to see what our children do with their lives, they are watching us to see what we do with ours. I can t tell my children to reach for the sun. All I can do is reach for it myself. Joyce Maynard FG-2

Joyce Maynard FG-3

Family Guide to the Planner: Study Habits Good study habits are important! Strong study skills will benefit your child throughout his or her education. You can help your son or daughter, at any age, develop good study habits by modeling a positive attitude toward schoolwork and providing an environment for completing homework. As you can, try to do the following: Set up a study area for your son or daughter. Find a study space that is quiet, uncluttered, and free of distractions. Younger children will need help with keeping basic supplies available. Talk with your son or daughter about specialized items, such as a dictionary or a calculator. Be aware that basic supplies may change as your son or daughter moves through school. Establish a homework routine. Younger children may not have homework every day. Even so, encourage your child to use the daily homework time to read or review. Be a model for your child. Consider doing your own paperwork (like paying bills) during this quiet time, as well. Be sure you know what your son or daughter s planner looks like. With younger children, look through the planner together and talk about how he or she will use it during the year. Understand how the planner helps students set goals and meet them. Schoolwork is important, but young children, teenagers, and tweens still need a regular bedtime and at least nine or ten hours of sleep a night! Students at these ages are also growing fast and need nutritious, balanced meals including breakfast. FG-4

FG-5

Family Guide to the Planner: Study Habits Did you know that kids have different ways of learning? Help your child understand how he or she learns best. Some kids learn best through seeing (visual learners), others by listening (auditory learners) or hands-on techniques (tactile learners). FG-6

FG-7

Family Guide to the Planner: Learning Starts at Home! Never underestimate how much of an impact you can have on your child s learning, no matter what grade he or she is in. Here are some tips to encourage and nurture your child as a learner. 1. Remember that attitude is everything! Your child will pick up on your conscious or unconscious attitudes toward education, toward his or her school and teachers and toward your child s abilities. Whatever your personal feelings or experiences, be positive and interested in your child s education! 2. Have conversations about what your son or daughter is learning and doing. Try to keep these conversations relaxed. 3. Understand that your child s interests may change and this might have a positive impact on completing schoolwork. 4. Show and express confidence in your son or daughter s abilities, and be sure to celebrate accomplishments and improvements! Make learning part of your family lifestyle. Your home environment and family routines can support a learning lifestyle in simple ways. Here are some ideas: Visit the library regularly. Don t force your son or daughter to come along, but give him or her the option to do so. Take time to read for pleasure. As a family, consider agreeing on an evening quiet time when the TV will be off and everyone will take time for studying, homework, reading, or paperwork. Limit TV and Internet time. Instead, focus on positive alternatives such as reading, games, family meals, physical activity or just getting to bed on time! Make time to talk. Sharing a meal or doing a chore together can lead to great, spontaneous conversations! Even if your son or daughter doesn t always want to talk, he or she will appreciate knowing that you re there and that the lines of communication are open. Your children need your presence more than your presents. Jesse Jackson FG-8

Jesse Jackson FG-9

Family Guide to the Planner: Staying Connected At any age, it is important to stay connected with your child s school. Your child s teachers will welcome your interest in helping your child achieve. Here are some ways you can stay informed and communicate with teachers and other support staff at your child s school. Read school newsletters, and check out the school Web site, when possible. Attend parent/teacher conferences, parent nights, and open houses. Use the planner to communicate with your child s teacher(s). In each planner there are spaces for you to write notes to teachers. You should also check regularly for notes from them. Follow up with an or phone call if needed. Remember: you don t need to wait for a negative reason to communicate; too often teachers hear only about problems, but you can be sure they appreciate hearing the positives, too! Give teachers and administrators the benefit of the doubt. Approach communications with the mindset that you re partners in pursuit of the same goal the success of your child and be willing to understand their point of view if problems do arise. Participate in decision making. Get involved in the PTA or parents advisory council. Vote when school board elections are held or consider running for election to the school board yourself. Take time to get involved. Volunteer on school planning committees. Volunteer to help out with school events: participate in fundraising activities, chaperone dances or field trips, or get involved with a reading program. Show interest in school activities by attending games, tournaments, concerts, and productions especially if your child is involved and by supporting fundraising efforts. If you want to help out but aren t sure how to get started, ask your child s teacher(s) for guidance! Be clear about how much time you re able to offer, and when. Even if you only have a small amount of time to give, remember that every effort helps! Your child s school will appreciate your involvement and the support it conveys. FG-10

FG-11

Family Guide to the Planner: Setting Goals Help Your Child Set Learning Goals As your child reviews his or her upcoming tasks and assignments at the beginning of the week, or the beginning of an evening homework session, encourage him or her to reflect on what needs extra work, or what small steps toward larger projects need doing. These identified must-do s can become monthly or weekly learning goals. Help Your Child Set Personal Goals Goals should also be based on personal interests and objectives. What really excites your child? What does your child enjoy doing? As a parent, take these interests seriously, and encourage your child to explore his or her passions. Help your child set small goals related to these things, as well. These goals should be bite-sized, as well as interesting and meaningful to your child; he or she should feel positive about setting and working toward them. Help Your Child Turn Goals into Action Weekly goals, or smaller steps toward monthly or weekly goals, should become part of your son or daughter s daily and weekly task lists. Ask your child if he or she would like your involvement in keeping him or her on track, or offering advice or assistance. Respect his or her preference, and show your support no matter what! Celebrate Successes! It s vital that goal-setting isn t seen as a chore, or as a way for teachers or parents to put pressure on children. If your child isn t meeting his or her goals, stay positive, and encourage him or her to revise the goals (or the action plan) as needed. Finally, be sure to celebrate successes, whether big or small! The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you re willing to work. Oprah Winfrey Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you ve imagined. Henry David Thoreau At School Specialty Planning & Student Development we believe in the power of planning......because every future deserves a great plan. FG-12

FG-13
