2 1 Introduce the Book Introduce the Nonfiction Genre: Biography Display the book cover. Read the title and the author s name. Tell children that Beatrix Potter wrote and illustrated books about animals. Explain that this book is a biography. A biography tells the story of a real person s life. Usually, the information in a biography is arranged chronologically, or in the order in which it happened. Point out that the author includes photographs of Beatrix and her family and shows her early drawings. Por qué crees que estas fotografías y dibujos aparecen en el libro? Activate or Build Background Display a copy of The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Recall or introduce the story. Point out that the same person Beatrix Potter is both the author and the illustrator of the book, because she wrote the words and drew the pictures. Ask how many children in the class have a pet. Have pet owners tell the class about their pets and describe the things they like to do with them. Preview and Predict Turn to page 2, and read it aloud. Explain that the author begins the book by answering the questions Quién fue Beatrix Potter? Dónde nació? Cuándo vivió? De quién trata este libro? Por qué Beatrix Potter es famosa? Introduce Vocabulary You may want to introduce the following words before reading: famosa: muy conocida artista: una persona que hace arte, como dibujos, pinturas o esculturas escritora: una persona que escribe dibujos: ilustraciones hechas con instrumentos de escritura Nonfiction Text Features Captions: Read aloud the caption on page 2. Explain that this caption gives more information about the photograph. Turn to page 5, and point out and read aloud the caption at the bottom of the page. Tell children that this caption also adds information to the main text. Explain that both captions help readers learn more about Beatrix Potter. Labels: Turn to page 4, and point out the labels. Explain that the labels identify the drawings. Tell children that the boldfaced type helps readers avoid confusing the labels with the caption at the top of the pictures. Italics: Turn to page 7. Point to the title of the book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, in the caption. Tell children that the letters in these words look different because they spell out the name of a book.

Use a pencil and pad of paper to pantomime writing as you say: A writer writes words. Have children repeat the sentence. Use crayons to draw a picture as you say: An artist draws pictures. Have children repeat the sentence. Tell children that sometimes the same person does both jobs in other words, he or she writes the words and draws the pictures in a book. Reread the Book After children reread the text, use the graphic organizer on the back cover to order and summarize events in the text. Discuss how information about Beatrix is presented in the text. 5 3 Learn Through the Text SOCIAL STUDIES: The Real Thing Use Beatrix Potter to help children understand how primary-source materials are used to document real events in the lives of historical figures. Explain that journals, letters, art, photographs, and other artifacts provide firsthand information about a person. Have children page through the book to identify the visual primary sources used: Los dibujos muestran el trabajo de Beatrix y sus intereses. Have children bring in a photograph or baby book to show a visual primary-source material for an event in their lives, such as a birthday. COMPREHENSION: Draw Conclusions Tell children that to better understand characters or events, it is sometimes necessary for readers to draw conclusions or make decisions based on what they read in the text and what they already know. Use a think-aloud to model how to draw a conclusion: La autora nos dice que a Beatrix Potter le encantaban los animales y le gustaba hacer dibujos de ellos. Encourage them to support their conclusions with facts from the book. WRITING Write a Biography Have children use what they have learned about biographies to write a biography of a favorite author. Assign children to small groups, each group studying an author relevant to their reading. Provide an assortment of materials (books, information from the Internet, and so on) by these authors. Be sure that the materials provide some background information about each author. After the groups have sorted through the available information, have them list a few facts about the author s life. Provide a graphic organizer like the one on the back cover for use during the prewriting stages. Have group members work together to put the information in chronological order. Ask children to use their notes to write and draw about the author s life. When groups have published their work, have each share with the class its biography and its favorite book by the author.
