For an ecosystem such as a forest, this can involve dealing with storms, fires and pollution, while for a society it involves an ability to deal with political uncertainty or natural disasters in a way that is sustainable in the long-term.

Y en las últimas décadas For the past two decades, our priority has been to understand the functioning of the Earth system and, in particular, the impact of human actions on that system.

Our existing knowledge provides a useful basis for vital activities needed to manage specific parts or features of our world in transition, but it falls well short of what can be considered

8 Y en las últimas décadas For the past two decades, our priority has been to understand the functioning of the Earth system and, in particular, the impact of human actions on that system. This science also tells us that the rate of global environmental change is, so far, vastly outpacing our response and, thus, that our current path is unsustainable. Our existing knowledge provides a useful basis for vital activities needed to manage specific parts or features of our world in transition, but it falls well short of what can be considered integrated solutions. We will have to meet a twofold challenge, namely to develop response strategies to global change, on the one hand, and to deepen our knowledge of the functioning of the Earth system and its critical thresholds and the on the other hand. This will require new ways of doing research that better link science and society to address the needs of decision-makers and citizens at global, regional, national, and local scales.
