1 Iverson Parent Bulletin CCSD From the Administration May/June 2015 Volume 1, Issue 5 Summer is right around the corner! I am so proud of our students and all they have accomplished this year. Our students dominated the Reading Ranger Program again this year and went above and beyond our expectations. As of June 1st, 89% of our students met their goal to graduate at least one time! What an incredible accomplishment! As you embark on your summer vacations, we would like to remind everyone to keep learning! We encourage you to visit the public library, write about your summer adventures, and visit the Iverson website for 2016 school year if you have not yet done so! Have a wonderful summer! fun online learning activities. We will offer one day a week during June and August where students can come to school to take AR quizzes that will count toward reaching their next Reading Ranger level. A ParentLink message will go home letting you know what day of the week this will be. Please be sure that you have registered online for the school year if you have not yet done so! The students researched and debated which events in American history most influenced our country. The events we focused on were: Civil War, Pearl Harbor, Lewis and Clark Expedition, California Gold Rush, 9/11, Industrial Revolution, Women s Suffrage, and Great Depression. After extensive research and debate amongst the students, Mr. Romero s class voted that the Civil War most influenced our country and Mrs. Laliberte s class voted for Women s Suffrage. As the end of the year approaches, we are developing our critical thinking skills by working on logic puzzles, and our creative thinking skills by completing engineering challenges. It has been a fantastic first year implementing the ALM model in third grade and I look forward to continuing it next year. Fourth/Fifth Grade: Our field trip to CSI: The Experience was a great success. The students showed off their observation skills and applied so much of what they learned during our Forensic Science unit. To finish off the labs for our unit, we learned about DNA from extracting DNA from strawberries first and then from ourselves. It was fascinating observing the DNA clumps and strands that were extracted. The only thing that would have made it better is if we had an electrophoresis machine to see the fingerprints of our DNA. We are now finishing our mystery novels and working on creative thinking by choosing activities from a Mystery Menu. We have had another successful year in our GATE/TAGS pull out program.

2 2 Primary Grades Kindergarten News Summer will soon be here and our eaglets have grown at Iverson! We will continue to learn and have some fun as we end the school year! We have been counting down the last 26 days of school with our Kindergarten ABC Countdown. We are continuing our Reading Rangers work, reading good books, writing longer stories, and working with numbers. Please make sure your child comes to school every day well-rested and ready to learn all the way to the last day of school, June 4 th! Thank you! What can you do to help your child over the summer break? Please continue to review and practice the 100 Kindergarten sight words. They should know these sight words fast 3 seconds per word! This is important because in order to read your child needs to know these basic words that are in every book. Here are other skills to practice and review: rhyming words, blending words, listening for beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words, writing sentences, knowing shapes, knowing positional words, writing the alphabet, writing numbers, counting to 100 by ones and tens, counting objects, adding, and subtracting. Remember to use the Reading Eggs website for more practice over the long summer break! Visit your public library to read lots of good books together. We do not want to forget what we have learned this school year, so please make a summer learning schedule that you can do at home. Have a safe and happy summer! First Grade News We are so proud of our first graders! They all have worked so hard to learn the standards that have been taught. We are especially proud of their hard work in the Reading Ranger program. At the end of May we enjoyed celebrating our students reading successes by drenching our administrators at the dunk tank. Please make sure your child reads and writes about their reading during the summer to avoid the summer slump. Then they will be ready to tackle the second grade standards when they return to school next year. We appreciate all of the work you did at home this year to help your students be successful. Have a great summer and enjoy your break! Second Grade News This past month second graders spent time researching a state of their choice. They gave formal presentations to their classmates on what made each state unique. It was wonderful to see how much more they were able to do independently after having completed an animal report earlier in the semester. The students also demonstrated more self-confidence while speaking in front of the class. As teachers, we were proud watching and listening to the presentations that were given. As we approach the final days of school before summer begins we would like to remind families of the importance of having your child continue to read each day. Our students have developed daily reading habits and have made tremendous growth in gaining reading skills. To maintain these habits and skills it is important to continue to read each day. A fun way besides reading books would be to use the Scootpad and Reading Eggs computer programs found on the school website. These accounts will stay active through the summer months. You may wish to enroll your child in some of the programs listed on the attached page. Our final wish would be to please have a safe and enjoyable time this summer while creating wonderful childhood memories!

3 Intermediate Grades Third Grade News We had a great field trip to the Nevada Heritage Museum. The students observed how Nevada was formed, and the history that shaped this great state. We appreciate all the chaperones that donated their time to travel with their child s class. With the year winding down, we hope your child has graduated their respected reading level. We encourage the students to continue reading during summer! We are doing all of our comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary benchmark assessments for the remained of the school year in reading. In mathematics, we are focusing on geometry and measurement. Students can practice on Scootpad to improve these mathematical skills. In Social Studies, we are working on some areas of geography, and the kids seem to be really interested in cultures around the world. The study of rocks, minerals, and soil is the last unit in science. We have talked about the differences between agricultural areas in Las Vegas compared to those of the Great Plains. We have also discussed the difference between rocks and minerals; and the properties of both. In writing, we are doing research papers on various topics, depending on your child s teacher. The kids got a chance to present their research to the class within our Speaking/ Listening unit. Please feel free to ask any questions about your student by e- mailing your child s respective teacher. Continue to push your child to strive for excellence and thank you for all of your support this school year! Please remember to have your child read over the summer so he/she does not lose the valuable reading skills they have acquired this school year. Also, If you have not registered your child, please do online through the portal or stop in the office to get your child signed up for the school year. Your child will receive his/ her report card the last day of school. Fourth Grade News WOW!!!! Here we are at the end of the school year. I guess the adage holds true that time really does fly when you are having fun. This has been an amazing year with an amazing group of 4 th graders. Even though school is out for the summer, that doesn t mean learning stops. Please remember to read every day!!! Read at the park. Read in the car. Read at the beach, at the pool, at your grandma s house. Visit your local library and check out books. Practice your multiplication and division facts, too!!! (Those aren t going away!!!) There are so many places to visit around Las Vegas that aren t just fun, they re educational!!! You can visit the Lied Children s Museum, Springs Preserve, Boulder Dam, Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon, Bonnie Springs, Mt. Charleston, Lake Mead, and the list could go on. If you go on vacation this summer, try to learn about the area you are visiting, convert those miles to feet to inches, play United States BINGO finding license plates from different states. Don t forget that learning never stops. We will miss you, but we will see you again as 5 th graders!!! Fifth Grade News The last few weeks in fifth grade have been a flurry of activities as we are preparing to send the students off to middle school, fully equipped academically and emotionally. We have been working on fractions and data in math, opinion writing, figurative language in reading, and critical thinking in all areas. Fifth Grade Promotion festivities will be held at Harney Middle School on Wednesday, May 3 rd at 1:30pm. We will also be giving Honor Roll awards during this time. Be sure to check the website and your child s backpack for important information pertaining to all the upcoming events for the last week of school. 3

4 Library News WOW! What an amazing year we have had in the library! In 3-5 th grades we have ended our year with some amazing storytellers and storytelling activities. In K-2 we finished the year with learning more about the library and the skills needed to locate information within the library. This has been an amazing school year and I am excited to see what next year will bring! Parents, please make sure your student(s) are reading over summer break! This is imperative to their success in school and in life. I encourage you to find a summer reading program for your student(s) because we do not want any regression during the summer. Music News Honor Choir wrapped up the year by performing at the Iverson Talent Show. Thank you to those students that remained dedicated and performed their best! I am so proud of all of you. It's hard to believe this great school year is coming to an end. I want to let our fabulous group of fifth graders know that it has been a pleasure teaching them this year. They have been truly wonderful to teach and work with. I wish them all the best in their future in middle school. For all our returning students, I look forward to seeing you next year for more music making! Humanities It has been a great inaugural year of our humanities program! Our students have learned a lot about the skills and character traits that make a good leader. Please help your student to continue to apply these skills throughout the summer. If your child is moving on to middle school, encourage him/her to draw on these skills when to be successful through middle and high school. Have a safe and fun summer with your families. Art News It s hard to believe that the school year is coming to a close. The 1 st and second graders are wrapping up their clay projects. They were so excited to work with clay this year and anxious to share their treasures with their families. The third graders have had so much fun making shadow puppets and performing for their classes. I was so delighted when one of our students, Savanna Pope, worked up a script for her team, made copies for everyone, and then made sure everyone practiced their part. No doubt, she will be a future screen writer. Second and fourth graders have had a chance to work on weavings with the 5 th graders completing their dream catchers. They were beautiful. The color combinations the students put together were stunning. Kindergarten classes have been working on their drawing and cutting skills creating a painting with scissors just like Henri Matisse. It s always fun to see what the students create. I am wishing everyone a safe and art- filled summer!

5 Summer Reading Programs and Incentives (offered throughout the Las Vegas valley) UNLV Summer Reading Skills for students going into 3rd grade The program includes five weeks of classroom instruction and stimulating activities led by an experienced teacher, engaging materials that provide instruction at home between the weekly lessons, and independent reading. For more info, call 1(800) Club Read: Summer Fun for Kids and Teens Kids and teens can earn prizes by keeping track of their reading. Every child who signs up for Club Read will get a membership card and a special wallet to put it in! All participants earn a Book Buck for every five books that are read aloud to them or they read on their own.. After they read 20 books, they ll earn a special prize and an entry into a drawing for a chance to win a $50 Target gift card! Registration for the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District s Club Read begins Sunday, June 1 and continues through Saturday, August 2. Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Program 2015 This year the Barnes and Noble summer reading program, Imagination's Destination, gives out a free book to each child who reads 8 books over the summer. There are many free books to choose from and there's something for every kid in grades 1-6. This summer reading program runs May 19 - September 7, Go to for more information. Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge 2015 Scholastic has a summer reading challenge where kids read and then go online to record the minutes they've read this summer. They'll also be able to take weekly challenges to earn rewards. This summer reading programs runs May 4 - September 4, Go to for more information. Book It! Spark Your Greatness Summer Reading Challenge 2015 Kids who participate in the Book It! Pizza Hut's Spark Your Greatness Summer Reading Challenge will be able to enjoy fun activities, play games, and have the chance to win some prizes. The summer reading challenge with Wimpy Kid will kick off on June 22! Go to for more information. Chuck E. Cheese Reading Rewards 2015 Chuck E. Estoy muy orgullosa de nuestros estudiantes y todo lo que han logrado este año. Nuestros estudiantes dominaron el Programa de lectura de Reading Rangers una vez más este año y fueron más allá de nuestras expectativas. A partir del 1ro de junio el 89% de nuestros estudiantes logró su meta de graduarse al menos una vez. Fue un logro increíble! A medida que el final del año se acerca, estamos desarrollando nuestras habilidades de pensamiento crítico mediante resolver rompecabezas de lógica, y nuestras habilidades de pensamiento creativo por medio de actividades de ingeniería. Ha sido un fantástico primer año al implementa el modelo ALM en tercer grado y esperamos continuarlo el año que viene. Cuarto y Quinto: Nuestra excursión a CSI: The Experience fue un éxito. Los estudiantes mostraron sus habilidades de observación y aplicaron todo lo que aprendieron durante nuestra unidad de Ciencias Forenses. Para acabar con los laboratorios de esta unidad, nos aprendimos sobre el ADN a partir de la extracción de ADN de unas fresas y luego de nosotros mismos. Fue fascinante observar los cúmulos de ADN y hebras que se extrajeron. Algo que lo habría hecho mejor es si tuviéramos una máquina de electroforesis para ver las "huellas digitales" de nuestro ADN. Aún estamos terminando nuestras novelas de misterio y trabajando en nuestro pensamiento creativo eligiendo de las actividades de un "Menú de Misterio." Hemos tenido un año exitoso en nuestro programa de GATE / TAGS.

7 2 Primary Grades Kindergarten News El verano pronto esta aquí y nuestras aguilitas como han crecido aquí en Iverson. El aprendizaje y la diversión continuaran a medida que culmina este año escolar. Hemos hecho un conteo de los últimos 26 días de escuela utilizando las letras del abecedario. Primero Estamos muy orgullosos de nuestros alumnos de primer grado! Todos ellos han trabajado tan duro para aprender los estándares que se les han enseñado. Estamos especialmente orgullosos por su arduo trabajo en el programa de lectura de Reading Rangers. Los estudiantes también demostraron más confianza en sí mismo al hablar frente a la clase. Como maestros, estábamos orgullosos de ver y escuchar sus presentaciones. A medida que nos acercamos a los últimos días de escuela, antes de que comience el verano nos gustaría recordar a las familias sobre la importancia de que su hijo continúe leyendo todos los días. Nuestros estudiantes han desarrollado un hábito de lectura diaria y ha habido un enorme crecimiento es sus habilidades de lectura. Para mantener estos hábitos y habilidades es importante que sigan leyendo a diario. 8 Intermediate Grades Tercero Tuvimos un gran paseo al Museo del Patrimonio de Nevada. Los estudiantes observaron cómo se formó Nevada, y la historia que dio forma a este gran estado. Agradecemos a todos los acompañantes que donaron su tiempo para viajar con la clase de sus hijos. Con el año terminando, esperamos que su hijo se haya graduado su nivel de lectura. Animamos a los estudiantes a seguir leyendo durante el verano. Estamos trabajando en evaluar nuestra comprensión, fluidez y vocabulario en lo que resta del año. En matemáticas, nos estamos centrando en la geometría y medidas. Los estudiantes pueden practicar en Scootpad para mejorar estas habilidades matemáticas. En estudios sociales, estamos trabajando en algunas áreas de geografía, y los niños parecen estar muy interesados en las culturas de todo el mundo. También hemos hablado sobre la diferencia entre las rocas y los minerales; y las propiedades de ambas. Quinto Las últimas semanas en quinto grado han sido una serie de actividades pues nos estamos preparando para enviar a los estudiantes totalmente equipados académica y emocionalmente a la escuela secundaria. En matemáticas hemos estado trabajando en fracciones y datos, la opinión por escrito, el lenguaje figurado en la lectura, y el pensamiento crítico en todas las áreas. Celebraciones para la Promoción de quinto grado tendrán lugar en la Escuela Secundaria Harney el miércoles, 3 de mayo a las 1:30 pm. También estaremos dando premios de Honor durante este tiempo. Asegúrese de revisar el sitio web y la mochila de su hijo para obtener información importante relacionada con los próximos eventos en la última semana de clases. 3

9 Biblioteca Wow! Qué año tan emocionante tuvimos en la biblioteca. En los grados 3-5to hemos terminado nuestro año con algunos narradores increíbles y actividades de narración de cuentos. En K-2ndo terminamos el año aprendiendo más acerca de la biblioteca y las habilidades necesarias para localizar información dentro de esta. Este ha sido un año escolar increíble y estoy emocionada por ver lo que traerá el próximo año. Padres, por favor asegúrense de que sus estudiantes estén leyendo durante las vacaciones de verano. Esto es imprescindible para su éxito en la escuela y en la vida. Les animo a buscar un programa de lectura de verano para sus hijos, ya que no queremos un retroceso durante el verano. Gracias a aquellos estudiantes que permanecieron dedicados y dieron lo mejor de sí. Estoy muy orgullosa de todos ustedes. Es difícil creer que este gran año escolar está llegando a su fin. Quiero que nuestro fabuloso grupo de alumnos de quinto grado sepan que ha sido un placer ser su maestra este año. Ha sido un placer para mí enseñarles y trabajar con ellos. Les deseo todo lo mejor en la escuela secundaria. Para todos nuestros estudiantes que regresan el año que entra, espero verlos para seguir haciendo más música. Humanidades Ha sido un gran año de inauguracion para nuestro programa de humanidades. Nuestros estudiantes han aprendido mucho sobre las habilidades y caracterisitcas de un buen lider. 10 Programas e Incentivos para Lectura de Verano (ofrecidos en todo el valle de Las Vegas) Es posible que desee inscribir a su hijo en algunos de los programas que se listan a continuación: Habilidades en Lectura este verano de UNLV para estudiantes que entraran al 3er año El programa incluye cinco semanas de instrucción en el aula y las actividades dirigidas por un profesor con experiencia, materiales que proporcionaran instrucción en el hogar entre las clases semanales, y lectura independiente.
