Boltz Middle School March 2014 Newsletter p Letter from the Principal Dear Boltz Middle School Parents and/or Guardians: Heading into March, we are gearing up for many tasks and events that accompany spring. Our students have registered for next year s classes, and we are busy building the master schedule for the school year. We are looking forward to the eighth grade celebration in May and the excitement that comes along with the end of the school year. Prior to spring break, our students will begin their TCAP tests. They will conclude TCAP after break. The results of these tests are used by teachers and administration to reflect upon instructional priorities for the building. We can see how we are doing with our students and adjust instruction around areas that indicate the need for growth. It is important that you partner with us to ensure that students use this as an opportunity to show what they have learned. It is important that your child be present to take these important assessments. Please schedule appointments around the testing window so that we can ensure the most accurate results for your child on the day of testing. Boltz Middle School students will take the State-mandated Transitional Colorado Assessment Program (TCAP) tests March 11-March 13 and March 25-March 26. The TCAP assesses the following content areas: math, reading and writing for grades 6-8. April 15-April 17, students will take the Colorado Measures of Academic Success for science and social studies. According to state law, every Colorado student enrolled in a public school is required to take either the TCAP or CoAlt (alternate assessment). Parents can prepare their child for these tests in several ways: Ensure your child gets a good night s sleep. Provide your student with a nourishing breakfast. Schedule appointments or vacations on non-test days. Encourage your child to do their best in school at all times, not just during assessments. The TCAP assessment is designed to provide a picture of student performance to schools, districts, educators, parents and the community. The data will be used to measure student, school, and district progress toward higher student achievement levels. For more information about TCAP tests, visit the Colorado Department of Education website at: or contact me questions and concerns. 2 7th Grade News Geography During 3 rd quarter we ve explored the dynamics of conflict in the Middle East and myriad examples of diversity present in the continent of Africa. Students have enjoyed high-engagement assessment tasks as we ve focused specifically on student choice this quarter! There are amazing events happening every day in every corner of the world and we continue to use current events from all of our regions of student to enrich and deepen our learning! 7th Grade Algebra We have been be working with functions in general and linear functions specifically. Our goal will be to construct and convert between graphs, equations, tables and real-world situations that are linear and written in different forms (slope-intercept, standard form, and point-slope form). We will also use equations to represent data in scatterplots. Got MATH??? The next unit of study in 7 th grade math is Moving Straight Ahead. Students will develop skills that are traditionally known as algebra. The unit introduces situations that can be modeled with linear functions and graphed with straight lines. We will spend most of the quarter preparing students for 8 th grade standards and algebra thinking. You can help your child with a few of the following ideas: Ask your child to describe real-world situations with linear functions. For example, the distance traveled in a moving car, the amount of water in a sink that is draining at a constant rate, total money earned for an hourly paid job, etc. Look at your child s math notebook and textbook for lessons learned throughout the weeks and notes taken. Encourage your child to complete consistent homework. This practice makes a significant different in assessment performance. Encourage your child to visit Khan Academy and spend at least one hour a week on 7th grade standards. ~Mrs. Campain and Mrs. Elder Boltz Middle School 720 Boltz Drive, Fort Collins, CO phone (970) fax (970) page 2

3 7th Grade News Milk Caps for Math The math department participates in the Morning Fresh Dairy fundraiser program. If you get your milk from them, save the caps. The caps can be from milk or juice. Have your children give them to their math teacher or drop them off in the office. Morning Fresh Dairy generously donates $50 for every 1000 caps we turn in. Last year the math dept. earned $400. The money is used to help purchase graphing calculators and other technology needs. Remember Drink your milk and juice Save Your Caps Give them to the Boltz Math Dept. 7th Grade Electives Photography Class Students are working in Pixlr to enhance their photographs. This is a free program students are also able to access at home. Our big project this month is Unusual Perspectives. Students will be taking photographs from an object s point-of-view (example: a book, a locker, a pencil) and creating a related story to present in Prezi. Technology and Engineering The second semester in the Technology and Engineering classes will started with inventions. Each student will came up with an invention to try. They will built a model of it, designed a poster to advertise it, and wrote a paragraph selling us the idea. It s always fun to see the creative ideas that the students present. Next up: Crash Test Vehicles in 6 th Grade, Air Delivery Systems in 7 th Grade, and Radioactive Bolt Attachment in 8 th Grade. Robotics In Robotics, we are going to start programming our LEGO Robots. We have basic robots constructed, so now we will learn about programming and modifying them. We have everything from complete beginners to semi-experts in the classes. No problem. The assignments will be differentiated to challenge all the students and bring out the best in them at all levels. It s going to be a lot of fun! Spanish Hola! In 7th grade Spanish, we are working on Unit 2, which is all about school, and focusing on communication in context through COLA stories. The students are doing an amazing job and speaking a lot of Spanish! This method focuses strongly on communication and language production, and involves using various learning methods (gestures, skits, drawing, reading, and writing) to acquire language and build fluency in context. Please ask your students to share the story with you or teach you the actions that go with their new vocabulary. I promise you will be impressed with how much they have learned! For the remainder of the Boltz Middle School 720 Boltz Drive, Fort Collins, CO phone (970) fax (970) page 3

4 7th Grade News (continued) year, we will continue to build fluency through the COLA method and will begin to talk about family. Please continue to check Blackboard for daily lesson plans and other resources, and have your student practice as much as possible at home. Sinceramente, Señora Quirós 8th Grade News Pre-AP English Frau McGrew s Pre-AP English: Students are completing their research unit. Students were required to select and research a controversial topic which has two opposing views. The research skills include the following: locating reliable, electronic resources, highlighting relevant material within articles, note taking in specific format, bibliographic format, and outlining. nce the research process is complete, students create a visual presentation either power point or prezi. The final step is to present their learnings to their classmates using only their outlines and their visuals. This is then followed by a question and answer session. All in all, the students have done a superior job throughout the unit! German IB Students in German 1b are just completing the unit on Family. As one of the wrap-up activities, they are composing an multi-sentence paragraph in German! The paragraphs were to include a general introductory statement about their family and then three main ideas with supporting details. They were to introduce their family members and describe them and their interests. As part of this, we have studied adjective agreement not an easy skill. Furthermore, they were to include possible free time activities that they and their family members enjoy. Adverbial phrases telling when, how often, and where could be included. The students brainstormed, wrote a rough draft and then typed their final paragraph. Students did extremely well! This practice addresses the state standard of Communicate in Writing in the target language. It will also prepare students for the end-or-the year district assessment. We are starting to look at three-dimensional figures and calculating surface area and volume. Please check synergy regularly for assignments, deadlines, and current progress. History with Mr. Needham Our studies in early American history are wrapping up the Federalist and Jeffersonian eras. Your students have been learning how our founding principles were unpacked from a paper document (U.S Constitution/Bill of Rights) and turned into a real life system by which Americans could reach for their goals and dreams. We are now beginning an exercise in which your students will run their own business by creating their own product, building the product and creating a commercial to sell it. Be sure to share your perspective on the real business world so we can have meaningful and reality based class discussions. We appreciate your support. 8 th Grade Science We will be wrapping up physics (forces and motion) just before spring break. Germany Summer 2015 Meeting Tuesday - February 18 th - 7 p.m. McGrew s room #3 If you missed this meeting and want information, contact Liz McGrew Many of you have received an from me in the past in regards to a future trip to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. I am planning another tour for the summer of 2015 and would like to hold an informational meeting to determine the interest for such a trip. I realize that the trip may seem far away, however, there is a slight price break for those who sign up at this time, and the monthly payments are greatly reduced. Just to provide you with some background information, I have taken many students in the past on three different tours. I loved each tour! Besides being an educational experience, I would venture to say that every student who has chosen to travel has enjoyed a tour that created memories that will last a life time. Many of the pictures from last summer s are actually on the Boltz website. The highlights of our 2015 tour would be Rothenburg, Dachau, Munich, Salzburg (with the Salt Mines), Lucerne (Mt. Pilatus), Heidelberg, and so on. The travel through the Alps is incredible! While in the city of Munich, we arrive at the Marienplatz just in time to see the Glockenspiel. We also travel to the castle of Neuschwanstein. Please consider attending this meeting and learning about this travel opportunity for your student. I will have brochures about the trip and other handouts. We will meet in my room (#3 near the library) on Tuesday, February 18 th at 7 p.m. Students are more than welcome to attend the meeting as well. See you then!
