3 Inclement Weather Policy Sometimes it is necessary to close school or open late because of weather conditions. Please make family arrangements now for the times that this happens. Children should know where to go if school dismisses early. For information about school schedule changes tune into Channel 21 (cable) or will have the needed information. All parents can also sign up for FCPS Keep in Touch program and receive notification. Parklawn ES cannot call parents when changes in the schedule occur. Here s some other information about schedule changes due to weather: In the case of a late opening on a Monday, school will then be dismissed at 3:15 p.m. Field trips are usually cancelled when the day is shortened Early closing decisions are made by 10:30 a.m. Late opening decisions are made typically by 5:30 a.m. SACC will remain open until 6:15 p.m. when schools are dismissed early. Extracurricular activities are cancelled when schools are dismissed early. Do not call the school for this information. TWO HOUR DELAY: School hours Monday Friday: 10:40 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. No breakfast served on these days! **Note: If there is a two hour delay on a Monday, we will follow Tuesday-Friday closing time. 4 Keep in Touch (KIT) KIT Basic (Automatic Enrollment) Parents of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) students and employees of the school system are automatically enrolled in the KIT Basic service. FCPS central offices and schools use KIT Basic to communicate emergency, delayed opening and school closing information, attendance, and outreach messages (this includes news and announcements from your child's school). Basic contact information from the student information system is uploaded to the KIT system. It is important for parents to keep their child s emergency contact information up to date. Parents should add Keep In Touch to your safe or permitted sender list to ensure they receive important messages from their children's school and the district. Updating KIT Basic Contact Information Parents may view and update their child's emergency and contact information online through wecare@school, a feature of FCPS 24-7 Learning (Blackboard) using a Parent View Account. Parents may also direct requests to update student contact information to the student information assistant at their child's school. KIT Plus (Subscription Service) KIT Plus is a self-subscribing, self-updating, and self-unsubscribing service. Anyone interested in news, events, and updates from FCPS may subscribe to receive information Updating your subscription You may update information at any time. Go to: In the Sign-In area, enter your address and password and click Log In. In the My Notifications area, select Edit. Select the announcements you want to receive and/or the schools you want to receive information from in your subscription. If you no longer want to receive selected items, deselect them by clicking the check marks to clear the boxes. Click Save Changes. 5 ADVANCED ACADEMIC PROGRAM LEVEL IV SCREENING MEETING Who: Parents of 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th graders interested in submitting a level IV advanced academic program referral What: AAP Chat When: Thursday, January 9 th from 6:00-7:00 Where: Parklawn Library Miss Meehan, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, will provide an overview of advanced academic services and will explain the forms necessary for completing a level IV referral. 9 Magnet School Application Process The magnet school application and lottery process for Bailey s Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences and for Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences will begin on January 3, To be eligible for the lottery, a student must be on or above grade level in language arts and math and demonstrate positive interpersonal and school behavior. Parents must complete the appropriate school application and return the form to the PreK-6 instruction and School support office at Fairfax Ridge. Copies of the applications will be available in the school office or can be found at Applications must be postmarked no later than March 3, Applications will be screened for eligibility, and a lottery will be conducted in early April. The application time line is provided below.
