In this class we will focus on only four authors who will give us an accurate idea about the main trends of this specific Latin American contemporary literature. The panorama will include critical discussions and reflections on the writing of these authors.

2 Course Goals/Objectives A. To develop an introductory study of the Latin American narrative works related to contemporary literary process called magic realism. B. To study the principal Latin American literary works of magic realism. C. To profoundly understand the process of Latin American magic realism through the analysis and interpretation of the works of representative authors. D. To practice critical writing of literary texts that pertain to the process of magic realism. E. To profoundly understand the critical study of the history of Latin American literature. Student Learning Outcomes The Student Will: Present research findings to peers Defend a point of view that may or may not coincide with her personal view Challenge arguments that lack substance Elucidate literary concepts to her peers Synthesize biographical data with information gleaned from an author s work Interpret poetic and prosaic discourse from a variety of perspectives Assess the validity of an argument Apply critical concepts gleaned from articles and books to her own reading of an author s work Required Texts Carpentier, Alejo. 3 Evaluation Three written exams 60% One Research Paper (six pages) 10% Oral Presentation 10% Weekly responses to reading 10% Class participation 10% Total 100% Grading Scale A = ; B = 89 80; C = 79 70; D = 69 60; F = 59-0 Attendance Policy 2 % from the FINAL grade is deducted for EACH absence above 1. More than 3 absences will result in an AUTOMATIC F. Absences excused or not will count against a student s class participation grade and may also cause points to be deducted from the final grade. The dates of assignments tests, presentations and paper deadlines will be strictly enforced. Any absence due to illness can only be excused with the appropriate medical documentation.
