1 From the Principal s Pen Welcome to the school year with a special welcome to the Class of 2019! My name is Michele Borges, and it is with great pleasure and gratitude that I join the Mission Oak High School staff, students and parents. I come to you with ten years of high school teaching experience in math and computer programming and nine years of administrative experience including three years as a high school Principal. I sincerely appreciate the welcoming and supportive environment during the early stages of my transition. I am excited to get to know many new faces and to learn about how I can most effectively serve the Mission Oak community. The first day of school will be held on Thursday, August 6 th when Mission Oak opens its doors for the eighth year to serve the Tulare community. We will be welcoming 433 incoming freshmen adding to a total school population of Freshman Orientation will be held on August 4 th. I encourage all freshmen to attend the morning Link Crew event for a fun and exciting kick off to their high school years. This event proves to make for a successful transition into high school as students get to know the campus and learn how to make the best of the four years they will spend as a Mission Oak Hawk! Seniors pictures for the yearbook must be taken at one of the following studios: Gainsborough Studio or Maciel s Studio The following dates are free (choose one) include 1 outfit, up to five poses and no appointment is necessary (first come first served): Wednesday, July 22, 12-4 p.m. Thursday, July 30, 2-6 p.m. Tuesday, August 4, 12-4 p.m. Tuesday, August 25, 4-8 p.m. On Tuesday, September 1 st we will hold Back-to-School Night. This is a wonderful time to come out to learn more about your students high school experience by walking through the campus, visiting classrooms, and meeting teachers. You will have the opportunity to learn about the curriculum, expectations and grading policies. Parents will also learn how to stay connected and informed through , websites and/ or phone contact. If you are interested in getting further involved in your child's education we welcome you to participate in School Site Council. For more information please call With the many changes in education due to the implementation of Common Core Standards and Smarter Balanced Testing, the staff has been working hard to provide 21 st Century learning opportunities to ensure college and career readiness for all students. 2 De la Pluma del Director Bienvenidos al año lectivo con una bienvenida especial a la Clase de 2019! Mi nombre es Michele Borges y es con gran placer y gratitud que uní al personal, estudiantes y padres de la Escuela Preparatoria Mission Oak. Vengo con diez años de experiencia docente en enseñanza en la escuela preparatoria en matemáticas y en programación de computadores y nueve años de experiencia administrativa incluyendo tres años como director de la escuela preparatoria. Aprecio sinceramente el ambiente cordial y de apoyo durante las primeras etapas de mi transición. Estoy muy contento de conocer nuevos rostros y de aprender a cómo puedo servir efectivamente a la comunidad de Mission Oak. El primer día de escuela será el jueves, 6 de agosto cuando Mission Oak abra sus puertas por el octavo año para servir a la comunidad de Tulare. This will be a great opportunity to help your student get familiar with the campus, get introduced to their LINK Crew Leader, and be involved in many fun activities. Please plan to have your student on the campus from 9:00 a.m. noon. On the evening of Tuesday, August 4, there will be Freshman Orientation Night for all of the freshmen and their parents. This is a great opportunity to find out the name of your student s counselor, meet the principal and administrators who will discuss some expectations, athletic requirements, purchase the necessary items for school (PE clothes, yearbook, activity sticker, or join the parent boosters) pick up your student s schedule and also be able to take a tour the school. BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT We invite all of you to come to Mission Oak on Tuesday, September 1 for our annual Back to School Night. This is a great opportunity to meet your student s teachers and find out what they will be expected to learn in each of their classes. PSAT and PLAN Mission Oak High School will be administering the PSAT on Wednesday, October 14. This test is an excellent preparation for the SAT. We strongly encourage the freshmen, sophomore and students to take this test if they are planning to attend college. During their junior year, they need to be taking the SAT and the ACT. The SAT and ACT information can be found by logging on to the internet. SAT: collegeboard.com ACT: ACTstudent.org COLLEGE INFORMATION SENIORS...this year will fly by and you need to begin applying for colleges and scholarships. The colleges and scholarships have specific deadlines so be sure to speak with your counselor right away if you need assistance. Mrs. Aguilar in the Career Center will be posting scholarships weekly on the website, in the bulletin and in the Career Center. Plan ahead and stop by the Career Center to meet Mrs. Aguilar and to get a jump start towards your future! Along with scholarships, she can help you with college research and applications as well.

Esta será una gran oportunidad para ayudar a su estudiante a familiarizarse con el plantel, presentarse a su LINK, y participar en muchas actividades divertidas. Por favor planee llevar a su estudiante al plantel de 9:00 a.m. medio día. La noche del martes 4 de agosto, habrá una Noche de Inducción de Estudiantes de Noveno y sus padres. Esta es una gran oportunidad para conocer a los maestros de su estudiante y saber qué se espera que ellos aprendan en cada clase.. PSAT y PLAN La Escuela Preparatoria Mission Oak administrará PSAT el miércoles 14 de octubre. Esta prueba es una preparación excelente para SAT. Invitamos a lo estudiantes de noveno, décimo y a los estudiantes a que presenten este examen si ellos planean asistir a la universidad. Durante su grado 11, ellos necesitan presentar SAT y ACT. Usted puede encontrar información acerca de SAT y ACT en Internet en: SAT: collegeboard.com ACT: ACTstudent.org INFORMACIÓN UNIVERSITA- RIA ESTUDIANTES DE GRADO 12...este año se irá volando y usted necesita aplicar a universidades y becas. Las universidades y las becas tienen fechas límite específicas por lo tanto es importante hablar con su consejero ahora mismo si usted necesita apoyo. La Sra. Aguilar en el Centro Vocacional publicará información sobre becas semanalmente en la página web, en el boletín y en el Centro Vocacional. Planee por anticipado y pase por el Centro Vocacional para reunirse con la Sra. Aguilar y de un gran paso hacia su futuro! Junto con becas, ella puede ayudarlo con investigación sobre universidades y aplicaciones.

On Wednesday, August 5th in the Cafeteria, the schedule will be as follows: Seniors: Juniors: 2:30 p.m. 3:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. 3:30 p.m. Sophomores: 3:30 p.m. 4:00 p.m. Any student that did not pick up their class schedule during their scheduled time will have the opportunity to pick up their class schedule on the first day of school, Thursday, August 6th, between 7:30 a.m.-8:00 a.m. in the gymnasium. Freshman students will have an opportunity to pick up their class schedules during orientation night. Orientation for the freshmen will be on Tuesday, August 4th at 6:30 p.m. in the gymnasium. Any student that did not pick up their class schedules on orientation night will have the opportunity to pick up their class schedule on the first day of school, August 6th, between 7:30 a.m. 8:00 a.m. in the gymnasium. Please review your student s schedule of classes on the first day. These classes should reflect the program that your student, and his/her Counselor planned last spring. There will be no regularly planned changes of any student s schedule after the first two weeks of the semester. Your student s Counselor is always available should you have concerns regarding classes, attendance, or personal problems. Information is also available about careers, scholarships, and school-related activities. Check your student s registration card for the name of their Counselor. Parents, this year the science department would like to be able to your student s progress reports to you. We can do this directly through our grade program. We piloted this last year and many parents appreciated getting the updates and the heads up if their child was in trouble. If you would like to receive these reports, please be sure that you put your in the contact information you fill out for the counseling office. If you have changed your recently, please update it. Currently, the policy states that freshman and sophomores shall remain on campus during the lunch hour unless permitted to leave by the school administration. Parents and guardians may request permission for their ninth and tenth grade students to go home for lunch, provided adult supervision is present. Juniors and seniors who are in good standing are allowed to go off campus during the lunch break. The good standing criteria is based upon the student s behavior and their school attendance. Eleventh and twelfth grade students who fail to maintain good attendance or discipline records may have their off campus privilege suspended. Please note, good standing includes academic performance. In order for juniors and seniors to receive off-campus privileges during lunch, juniors and seniors must maintain a minimum progress toward meeting the high school graduation requirements prescribed by the Board. Section of the Education Code further states: Neither the school district nor any officer or employee thereof shall be liable for the conduct or safety of any pupil during such time as the pupil has left the school grounds pursuant to this section.

Por favor revise el horario de clases de su hijo (a) el primer día. Estas clases deben reflejar el programa que su estudiante, y su Consejero planearon la primavera anterior. No habrá ningún cambio planeado al horario de los estudiantes después de las primeras dos semanas del semestre. El Consejero de su estudiante siempre estará disponible en caso de inquietudes con respecto a las clases, la asistencia, o problemas personales. Actualmente, la política establece que los estudiantes de los grados 9 y 10 permanezcan en la escuela durante la hora del almuerzo excepto si la administración de la escuela permite la salida. Los padres y tutores pueden solicitar la salida de sus estudiantes de 9 y 10 para almorzar en casa, siempre y cuando se cuente con supervisión de un adulto. Se permite a los estudiantes de 11 y 12 que tengan buen registro disciplinario salir de la escuela durante la hora de almuerzo. Los criterios de buen registro disciplinario se basan en el comportamiento del estudiante y su asistencia a clases. Los estudiantes de 11 y 12 que no cumplan con estos criterios perderán este beneficio. Un buen registro también incluye el rendimiento académico. Para que los estudiantes de 11 y 12 cuenten con el beneficio de salida del plantel para almorzar en casa, ellos deben mantener un progreso mínimo hacia el cumplimiento de los requisitos de graduación establecidos por la Junta. We are looking to further enhance the positive academic and behavioral environment for everyone at Mission Oak High School. As a staff and student body, we are devoting much time to collaborate on the details of a School-wide Positive Behavior Interventions & Support (PBIS) framework, which will be fully implemented on the first day of the school year. Part of this process includes developing and teaching specific behavioral expectations to our students. 9 MO NEWS FALL NEWSLETTER Dress Code Information for High School Students Our district campuses encourage students to dress appropriately for school and enforce a dress code for all high school students. Research has shown that student dress and appearance affect student attitude and conduct and that appropriate grooming and dress are a part of the learning process. We understand that students and their parents freely choose a style of dress that reflects the student's individuality, but we also believe that there are standards of appropriateness in grooming so not to distract from the educational process. If you have any questions regarding the dress code policy, please contact the high school administration at your convenience. It is important to note that the dress code shall apply at school and at all school-sponsored activities. The following guidelines are intended to define appropriate student attire: all 2014 Newsletter Student dress and appearance shall not be disruptive/hazardous to the safety of anyone in the school. Any clothes or styles of dress that may cause a threat, have a negative effect, or disrupt the educational process will not be permitted. No student may wear clothing that contains words that are suggestive or has suggestive double meanings of lewdness, obscenity or vulgarity. Clothing advertising alcohol, drug or tobacco products is prohibited. Any apparel, jewelry, accessory, notebook, backpack, or manner of grooming, which, by virtue of its color, arrangement, trademark or any other attribute, denotes membership in gangs, advocates drug use, violence, disruptive behavior or is offensive is prohibited. A behavior contract is enforced based on gang associated activities. See-through, midriff, fishnet blouses, spaghetti strap tops (straps must be one 1 1/2 or wider), low cut, revealing tops and muscle shirts that are cut low under the arm are prohibited. Shirts must be worn at all school activities including sporting events. Bare midriffs will not be allowed. All shorts and skirts must be an appropriate length, mid-thigh or longer. Biker shorts shall not be worn as outer garments. Bandannas are not allowed at school or at school-sponsored events. Towels, T-shirts, folded shirts or any other clothing article cannot be worn around the neck, draped over the shoulder, or hanging from the pocket. No lanyards hanging from pocket. Wearing of hats on campus is not permitted. This includes, but is not limited to, baseball-style hats, knit caps, beanies, bandannas, hair nets, and hoods. For sun protection, students are allowed to wear a full brim hat that is constructed of cotton or canvas material, capable of being folded up while in the classroom. These hats must be: Free of any type of logo or writing, Solid white or khaki color, Removed upon entering building. No bagging or sagging clothes are permitted. Pants must fit at the waist, hips, crotch and thighs. Belts must be tucked into the pant loops. Wallet chains are prohibited. Shoes must be worn at all times Acceptable/Aceptable TJUHSD Dress Code The Tulare Joint Union High School District encourages students to dress appropriately for school. All clothing shall be neat, clean and acceptable in repair and appearance and shall be worn within the bounds of decency, safety, and good taste as deemed appropriate by school administration.
